Abstract

746,333. Type bar-making machines. MERGENTHALER LINOTYPE CO. April 30, 1954 [May 11, 1953], No. 12550/54. Class 100 (3). Releasing and assembling spacebands.-A typographical line-casting machine comprises a yielding line-supporting member movable under the influence of matrices and spacebands passing into the assembler elevator, and means for effecting a yielding movement of said member prior to the entry of a spaceband to facilitate such entry by relieving the tension on the line being composed. When a spaceband Y is released by depression of a key Al, the releasing process causes to be momentarily closed a switch in a supply circuit from a selenium bridge rectifier to a rotary solenoid 21 having a pivotal armature 21a. On closing the switch the armature 21a swings to the left a pivotal member 20 having friction surfaces 20a which engage the sides of the assembler slide 6 and move it and the line-supporting member 5 to the left a distance equal to the lower thick end of the pendant section of a spaceband. The friction brake 10 prevents any premature return movement of the slide when the switch is opened.
