Abstract
719,514. Type-bar-making machines. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY, Ltd. (Mergenthaler Linotype Co.). Oct. 1, 1952, No. 24582/52. Class 100 (3). Assembling matrices.-A typographical composing machine of the kind known under the Registered Trade Mark " Linotype " comprises an assembler slide brake to normally prevent retrograde movement of the slide, a poweroperated cam-shaft for raising the elevator, and means controlled from said power-operated cam-shaft for releasing the assembler slide brake prior to the raising of the elevator so as to cause the slide through the line resistant to press the composed line yieldingly against the rotating starwheel. The machine is of the general construction described in Specification 706,438, and the assembler slide brake 15, Figs. 1 and 7, is momentarily released before the elevator B rises by means of a rotary solenoid 34, Figs. 1 and 3, energized by the closing of a switch 42 by a cam 40 on the cam-shaft 28 for raising the first elevator. Alternatively, the brake may be released by a mechanical connection from the cam 40. As the elevator is raised and nears the transfer position, a projection 45 releases the brake again through a mechanical linkage 46, 46a, 47, 48. The link 47 is mounted on the plate P of the hinged assembly frame, which is sometimes swung open, this being permitted by the split linkage arrangement 46a, 47, projections 46a being tapered and conical to facilitate re-engagement. The brake is restored on descent of the elevator by a projection 50. The elevator is provided with main and auxiliary rails for supporting at either of two levels matrices formed with upper and lower characters. The lower ends of assembled matrices should be seated on the rails to the left of small detaining plates 32, Fig. 1, and the upper ends are held against displacement to the right by spring-urged locking pawls 20. When the brake is released the first time, a spring 14 forces the slide to the right and forces the last matrix against the plates 32, so that the star-wheel can push the upper end of the matrix past the pawls if it was not previously properly aligned.
