Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 21, 1913.
Application filed May 3, 1912. Serial No. 694,867.
To lil 1117i om may Concern Be it known that l, llonnn'r t). EQARDMAN,
of (i rand Rapids, county of Kent, and State oiz hlichigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Typographical )la-- chinos, of which the following a spec-.iiiM cation.
My invention relates to typogra phical machines, such as linotypc machines ot' the gew eral organization set forth in 'Letters Patent of the United States to O. ldergenthaler, No. 436,532, wherein circulating matrices are, released t'rom a, magazine in the order in which their characters are to appear in print, and then assembled in line together with spacers, the composed line transferred to the, face oi a mold, the mold filled with molten metal to form a. slug or linotype against the matrices which produce the type characters thereon, and the matrices thereafter elevated and returned through a dis-A tributing mechanism to the magazine from which they started.
lloro particularly, trihutinnA mechanism ployed Eoil'nesenting thereto.
In the ordinary commercial linotype mal chine. the distributing mechanism comprises l it relates to the .disand to the means emthe type or matrices rotating screws which convey the matrices along a rail or har. from which they drop at the proper points into the channels of the magazine troni 'which they were originally released. The matrices are presented one at a lime if the action of these screws by a. vertically reciprocating meml'ier or lifting ini gw and it sometimes happens that a matrix l will not. he ennagrcd properly by the finger l or that il is incorrectly presented thereby to the serons. Thus, for instance, 'it may tail to enter between the screw threads, or become 'jammed between the thread and the side plates, or slip over the top of the linger, or similar accidents may occur to prevent its proper delivery.` Such abnormal action ordinarily results in the arrest of the lifting l'mger or subjects it to undue resistance, and therefore the parts are construct-ed to yield so as to obviate breakage or injury thereto or to the matrix. lt sometimes happens that such yielding means are not sul'licient to prevent the matrices :from being bent or mutii lated, and l therefore provide connections whereby the action ofthe distributing ineclr l anism is instantly arrested in the event that a matrix is thus improperly presented. To this end l avail myself of the relative Inoven'ieni between the vieldingrly connected parts which occurs in the event of undue resistance, and specifically I prefer to connect the arresting means to the device which actuates the lifting nger.
In the `accompanying),r drawing, I have. by Way of example shown my improvement and in preferred form. and as applied to the specific kind of mechanism already mentioned, but obviously many changes and variations may be made. therein, and similarly it may be used in connection with other forms of typographical machines, such as typesetters, typecasters and the out departure from its spirit; and generally speaking, l desire it to be understood that 't do not limit myself to any specific form or embodiment except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a rear veiw of one end ofthe distributing mechanism, showing its actuating means an( the disengagring mechanism therefor; Fig. 2 is a. rear view of the other end of the distributing mechanism, showing the presentingrr means and my invention applied thereto, and illustrating the parts in normal relalion; and Fig. 3 is a similar View, the parts being in a ditierent relation.
Referring to the drawing, the distributing mechanism is or may be of the ordinary i'orm, and comprises the conveying screws A, the rail or bar A1, the side plates or rails of the distributor box. and the vertically reciprocating lift or finger B, 'whereby the matrices X are transferred one at a time to the screws.
The screws A are rotated in the usual nay friction-clutch members being movable to make or break the Yfriction. connection. and formed with the lateral cam surface Q?. Mounted in proximity to the clutch is the rock shaft O carrying the. arm P and the pin P1 t0 engage the cam Q, and also carrying the. ldctent A spring O1 (shown in dotted lines) normally move the pin l1 into the path ot' the cam Q1, which tendency of the spring is resisted and controlled by the engagement with the detent N of the arm or pavvl M on the eustoinary stop bar L.
