Assembling matrices and spacebands; keyboards.-Assembling mechanism for typographical composing machines includes an assembler wherein matrices and spacebands are composed, a device for stacking the matrices and spacebands in the assembler one by one as they are delivered thereto, and automatic means for advancing the composed line in the assembler a predetermined distance prior to the delivery thereto of a spaceband, said line advancing movement being distinct from that which takes place by the stacking of the matrices and spacebands in the assembler. A spaceband entering the assembler thus does not contact the preceding matrix and so tends not to be prevented from becoming properly seated. The star-wheel 15, Figs. 2 and 3, is mounted on a slide 24 which is moved momentarily to the left towards the assembler 13 when a solenoid 40 is energized. The star-wheel is rotated by a belt 51 which passes over an eccentricallymounted pulley 34 on the slide 25 for adjusting the tension of the belt. On actuation of the spaceband key lever 54, Fig. 5, a rear keyboard bar 55 is raised to operate the yoke 62 through a trigger 56, cam 65 and roller 66. Operation of the yoke 62 operates a yoke 72 through a trigger 70, cam 74 and the roller 66. The yoke 72 lifts a key reed 75, which lifts a rod 76 to operate the spaceband escapement. A pin 77 on the reed 75 raises a front keyboard bar 81 which operates a yoke 86 through a trigger 82, cam 90 and roller 91, and the yoke 86 lifts a reed 92 to close an actuating switch 94 for the solenoid 90. The timing is such that the starwheel is reciprocated before the spaceband reaches the assembler. Specification 925,597 is referred to.
