A quadding control device for a typographical line-casting machine of the kind wherein matrices released from a magazine are composed in line in an assembler elevator and transferred to a first elevator which carries the line to casting position between a pair of vise jaws and then returns it for distribution, the functions of the machine being controlled by a coded tape, includes a code marking on the tape immediately preceding the "elevate" marking, a signal being produced by the quadding marking during the assembling of the line, means for transferring the signal to a relaying device actuated by the entry of the line into the first elevator, and means actuated by the relayed signal whereby during the descent of the first elevator the vertical control rod for the vise jaws will be rotated to a position corresponding to the quadding marking on the tape. The signal produced by the tape marking energises a rotary solenoid 3, Fig. 2, and moves its lever 4 counter-clockwise to the position shown, where it is held by a latch 7. When the assembler elevator lever 10 is raised, screws 11, 12 on an arm 9 respectively close a switch 5 and release the latch 7. Closing of the switch 5 energises a rotary solenoid 16, Fig. 4, whereupon a catch 19 is raised, and locked by a lug 24 engaging a block 15. When the line delivery carriage delivers the line to the first elevator, it also strikes a pusher 22 to actuate a striker lever 20, a lug 26 on which engages under a lug 23 on the catch 19, causing the latter to close a switch 17. On retraction of the lever 20, the catch 19 and solenoid 16 are released. Closing of the switch 17 energises a solenoid 37, Fig. 6, on a rack 32 slidable in the vise frame 35, and a pawl 40 is projected into the path of a catch 42 on the first elevator 43. On descent of the elevator, the rack 32 is lowered, rotating a wheel 30 on a shaft 31 carrying a skew gear engaging a gear 47 on the vertical vise jaw control rod 44. The amount of rotation of the rod 44 depends on the position of the pawl 40. There is therefore provided a pawl 40, together with a corresponding assembly 37, 17, 19, 20, 22, 16, 5, 11, 12, 3, for each sort of quadding marking there may be on the tape, e.g. "quad left", "quad right", or "centre".
