Abstract
909,432. Type-bar-making machines. MERGENTHALER LINOTYPE CO. Aug. 25, 1960 [Sept. 2, 1959], No. 29351/60. Class 100 (3). Trimming type-bars.-A typographical linecasting machine having a knife block adjustable to a slug-trimming position and to an open position to allow slugs with type-bearing overhang portions to pass through comprises means operable when a matrix line is in the assembler elevator to store a " knife block open " signal, received from a control tape or from a manually controlled push-button, means operable when the line is transferred to the delivery slide to transfer the signal to a second storage stage, and means operable when the line is delivered to the first elevator to actuate the knife block. Receipt of the signal closes a switch 70, Fig. 4, or a switch 32, for automatic or manual operation respectively, to energize a relay A and complete a holding circuit therefor. When the assembler elevator is raised, a switch 31 is actuated to close contacts 72, 73 and energize a relay B1 and thereafter to open contacts 72, 71 and release the relay A1 a holding circuit for the relay B being completed through a normallyclosed switch 37. When the line delivery lever 64, Fig. 2, reaches its fully advanced position, a collar on a rod 63 closes a switch 36 to energize a relay C in series with a resistor 74, a holding circuit being completed through the relay contacts C1, and contacts B3 being open. Thereupon, contacts C2 are closed, and a reversible motor 53 is actuated to raise a rod 46 and move counter-clockwise a lever 42 to open the knife block 40. A roller 56 on the rod 46 allows a limit switch 54 to close and opens a limit switch 55 to stop the motor. Return movement of the rod 63 opens the switch 36, and also the switch 37 to release the relay B. If the next line is also accompanied by a " knife block open " signal, the relays A, B are again energized, the relay C having remained energized, and the rod 46 remains in its upper position. If the next line is unaccompanied by a signal, the relays A, B remain de-energized, and when the switch 36 is closed, the relay C is de-energized, being shortcircuited through normally closed contacts B3 of relay B. Contacts C3 are thereupon closed to actuate the motor 53 in reverse and lower the rod 46 to close the knife block, the switch 54 then being opened by the roller 56 to stop the motor, while the switch 55 closes. All the relays are now de-energized. Specification 556,848 is referred to.
