Abstract
772,348. Type - bar - making machines. MERGENTHALER LINOTYPE CO. Sept. 2, 1955 [Dec. 29, 1954], No. 25227/55. Class 100(3) Driving mechanism; assembling matrices; metal pots. In a typographical composing machine, a tape control device controls adjustable selective mechanism for conditioning the machine automatically for casting one or more slugs from a line of matrices. In Fig. 5, the mechanism is shown diagrammatically in plan at the upper right, in side view at the left, and in front view at the lower right. During normal operation a ratchet bar S is held in its forward position by a stop M5 on a control member M, while a clutch 13 is closed so so that the feed of the tape Y is not interrupted. When a particular perforation y is sensed in the tape by a bell-crank B1, a switch c is closed to energize a solenoid D and through a toggle F and actuator E the member M is set to the position shown in chain lines, for casting two slugs from each line, as indicated by a pointer m2. The subsequent movement of the line delivery slide operating lever releases the bar S, which is then moved by a spring S2 as far as permitted by the stop M5. Movement of the bar S mechanically operates a latch to lock the assembler in its lower position and a stop to arrest the first elevator short of its line transfer position, so that the same line will be presented twice. The movement of the bar S also allows to close a switch G to energize a solenoid 16, which moves a lever 17 to open the clutch 13 and interrupt the tape feed. Slidable on the bar S is a pawl S3 which is spring- urged rearwardly, and is moved forwardly by the forward movement of the metal pot, carrying with it a rod (not shown) which becomes locked in a forward position and prevents the machine from being stopped at the end of the first cycle. As the pawl S3 moves rearwardly, it engages a tooth S2 of the bar S and retracts it one step. After two slugs are cast, the bar S thus returns to normal position, and in doing so releases the assembler, the first elevator, and the said rod, while the switch G opens to close the clutch 13 and resume the tape feed, whereupon a protuberance b1 on the bell-crank B1 is forced out of the perforation y, the switch c is opened, and a spring d1 returns the member M to normal position. The member M is provided with a knob and a detent mechanism, and by rotating the knob it can be set manually for casting 2, 3, 4, 5 or an indefinite number of slugs from one line as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,235,482.
