In a typographical linecasting machine including at least one pair of adjacent magazine channels containing similar matrices, an arrangement is provided for switching a keyrod common to the two channels alternately into engagement with the escapements for the two channels so as to release matrices alternately therefrom, comprising a guiding pawl or latch pivotally mounted on the keyrod co-operating with a stationary guiding member to positively steer the keyrod against the two escapements in turn. Fig. 2 shows a switching unit 10 for two pairs of such channels, the escapements of each pair actuated by a keyrod 14 having a peg 16 to which is pivoted a pawl 20. On upward movement of the rod 14, the pawl moves into a recess 24 or 26 and is there held vertical. On downward movement, the pawl is deflected by a surface 28 or 30, so as to move the keyrod laterally to its other position. Fig. 4 shows a unit for one pair of channels. In the keyrod guide 34, the tine 32 is omitted between the two escapements concerned. The pin 16, Fig. 7, may be secured to the rod 14 on a bracket 36 fastened by a screw 40 and engaging in a recess 42 on the rod 14, the recess 42 being wide enough to allow some vertical adjustment.
