To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. HOWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn borough, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to adjustable marginal stop mechanism for typewriting machines, and the object thereof is to provide improved means for disconnecting the look: ing pawls from the teeth of the rack.
In the Underwood typewriting, machine to which my invention is illustrated as applied, it is customary to provide upon each margin gage a forwardly-extending handle,
and to provide alongside of said handle a stationary grip, so that when said handle is pressed toward said grip, the stop is .re-
leased and may be slid to the right or left along the supporting rod, so as to regulate the left or right-hand margin on the typed sheet. An object of my invention is to simpli the construction and operation, and I provlde means whereby the handle, if
swung either tothe right or left, will release the pawl preparatory to sliding the margin gage or block along the supporting rod in the direction in which the handle is being pressed. Thus, it becomes unnecessary to provide any fixed grip or finger rest for coiiperation with the handle, and the operation is also simpler. The handle is provided with opposite cams, and a connection in the form of a slide has a part engag-. ing said cams, and the margin gage pawl is operable by said connection. Thus, by a simple and inexpensive structure, which is reliable and readilyoperated, the margin gage may be instantly released for adjustment in either direction. To conduce to compactness, the handle is mounted upon the under side of the margin block, and
the same is true of the pawl; while the con necting device overlies the pawl and also has a part extending down to be engaged by the right and left cams upon the handle.
Each stop comprises a supporting block adjustable along a rod and having a guide extending transversely to said rod, said \n'l'nl'l 1N I] \T1.n
rack with which the block engages. Each block has a slidable member movable in and guided by the guide, aforesaid, which slidable member is operated by a cam pivotally secured to the block, and the inner end of said slidable member is associated with a pawl, which is moved by said cam into and out of engagement with the rack.

Fig. 6 is a view taken .upon a transverse plane indicated by the line 6.6, Fig. 1, this view being employed to show the arrangement of the elements of the stop mechanism as a. whole, as seen from a position adjacent the right-hand end of the carriage.
The frame 6 has upwardly-extending arms 7 at either end, a side view of one being shown in-Fig. 6. These arms serve as supports for two bars or rods extending across the machine, one of which, 8, serves as a support for the right and lefthand marginal stops, while the other, 9, has a series of teeth 10 whereby a rack is provided; this bar also serving as a the right-hand marginalstop.

cured to the upper ends of the arms 7 is a prises a block 15 supported by the bar 8 the ends of and extend and slidable along the same, said block having a rearwardly-extending portion provided with a guide 16, which engages the rack or bar 9 and guides the stop as it'is moved along the rod 8; the said guide serving to hold the stop in proper position relatively to the rod or, rack 9 and to hold the locking pawl, to be hereinafter referred to, in proper position relatively to the teeth 10 thereupon, so that it may engage the same.
The block 15 carries a swinging cam 17 the same being pivoted at 18 to the under side of the block, said cam having two cam surfaces 19, as best shown in Fig. 4, and a forwardly-extending handle or button 20 whereby it may be swung.
The block 15 is provided with a slot or groove 21, whereby a guide is provided which extends transversely to the rod 8, and 22 designates a slidable member movable in said guide and supported by the block 15, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 4. This sliding member is provided with a downwardlyextending portion 23, the lower end of which terminates in a lug 24, which lug engages with the cam surfaces 19 of the swinging cam 17, whereby longitudinal movement will be imparted to the said slidable member as the cam is moved in either direction from its normal central position, The downwardly-extending arm 23 may be provided with a pin 25 entering a hole provided in the block 15, to thereby assist in guiding the said slidable member as it is operated.
The slidable member 22 is operatively associated with a pawl adapted to engage with and be disengaged from the teeth 10 with which the rack bar 9 is equipped, which pawl may be formed directly upon the inner end of the slidable member, as indicated at 26, although said pawl may obviously be formed as an element separate from the slidable member; and 27 designates a spring, which are connected with a stud with a pin 29 carried by the guide block 15 mg across the inner end of the slidable member 22. The right-hand marginal stop 14 here referred to is equipped witha pointer 30 for use in setting the stop, as is usual in marginal typewriters and similar machines.
The left-hand marginal stop is designated as a' whole by the reference numeral 31 in Fig. 1. This marginal stop, as above 'explamed, 1s slidable along the rod 8, the same stop mechanism for block 32 by g as the right-hand marginal stop 14; and the -stop willbe properly guided by therack;
and so that movement communicated to the said block will be transmitted to the rack 11 carried thereby, as above explained, to thereby oscillate the same and operate the bell-ringing and key-lockin mechanisms of the machine when such in anisrns are used in conjunction with the marginal stop mechanism to which this'invention relates. The movement referred to is communicated to the block 32 by means of a bar 34 carried by and'located at the rear end of the block, and which bar is shown as provided with cams 35 for operating the bell-ringing and key-locking mechanisms, and with which cams a lug 36, carried by the carriage 37 of the typewriter, engages, tothereby depress the bar 34 and communicate a slight angular movement to the rack 11, as explained. The bar 34 is provided with a lug 38 at its lefthand extremity with which the lug 36 on the carriageengages, to thereby arrest the movement of the carriage to the left, as will be appreciated.
T e block 32 of the left-hand marginal stop is likewise provided with a guide 39 within which a transversely movable sliding member 40 operates, and 41 designates a swinging cam member having two cam Surfaces 42. This cam member is pivotally supported upon the under side of the block 32- by means of a screw 43,- or otherwise; the construction of the cam 41 being preferably identical with that of the cam 17, hereinbefore referred to.
The transversely slidable member 40 is provided with a depending arm 44 having a lug 45 at its lower end, which lug engages with the cam surfaces 42 of the cam member 41, whereby reciprocating motion, in a direction transverse to the supporting rod 8,

The sliding member 40 is operatively associated with a pawl which engages the rack 11, to thereby lock the left-hand marginal stop in whatever position it may be adjusted, the same as in the case of the right-hand marginal stop, to which end the said sliding member is shown as provided with a depending pin 46 located adjacent its inner end, and which pin extends downward and through a hole 47 provided in the block 32, .a'nd into a hole provided in a swinging pivotally supportedpawl-48; said pawl being secured to and carried by the supporting means of a screw 49 extending through a hole provided in the said pawl, or otherwise; the pawl being forced in a rearward direction by a springtl, the arrangement and operation of which will be obvious from Fi 5 of the drawings.

Adjustable marginal stop mechanism for typewriters and similar machines comprising a supporting rod; a block or support supported by and slidable along said rod, and which block is provided with a groove in its upper side and. extending transversely to said rod; a rack with which said block engages and by which the same is guided as it. moves along said rod; a swinging cam pivotally connected with said block and located upon the under side thereof; a slidable member movable in said groovexand-having a dependingportion pro- .vided with a lug adapted to engage said .cam; and a pawl with which said slidable member is operativelyconnected, and which pawl is adapted to engage said rack to thereby lock said block in place.

Adjustable marginal stop mechanism for typewriters and. similar machines comprising a supporting rod; a block supported by and slidable along said rod; a rack with which said block engages and by which the same is guided as it moves along said rod; a swinging cam carried by and pivotally connected with said block; a slidable member carried by said block and movable relatively thereto in a direction transverse to said support-- ing rod, and which member is operated by said cam; and a pawl carried by said slidable member and located at the free end thereof, and which pawl is adapted to engage said rack to thereby lock said block in place.

Adjustable marginal stop mechanism for typewriters and similar machines comprising a supporting rod: ablock or support supported by and slidable along said rod; a rack with which said block engages and by which the same is guided as it moves along said rod; a swinging cam carriedby and pivotally connected with said block; a slidable member carried by said block and movable relatively thereto in a direction transverse to said supporting rod, and which member is operated by said cam; a pawl pivotally connected with said block and adapted to engage said rack to thereby lock said block in place; and means whereby motion imparted to said slidable member by said cam is transmitted to said pawl, to thereby move the same out of engagement with said rack.
