To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED G. F. Kunow- SKI, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn Borough, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a typewriting machine having a carriage which is fed step by step towards the left, and an object of tabulator-key the invention is to provide improved means to facilitate the positioning of the carriage to begin a new paragraph.
A feature of the invention consists in the provision of manipulative means within easy access of the operative, whereby, after the carriage is returned to the extreme righthand side of the machine, it may be quickly advanced to begin a new paragraph at a predetermined letter-space. Preferably, the manipulative means, comprising a tabulatorkey, which controls the position of the carriage, is mounted on said carriage.

The platen l is journaled as usual in a carriage 2 and is supported therein by the usual platen axle 3. The carriage is mounted for movement as usual on the main frame of the machine, a portion of which is shown at 4, the carriage being fed in letter-space movements by a spring-drum 5 and through the usual escapement mechanism under the control of the usual type-keys (not shown), said escapement mechanism including the usual escapement wheel 6, escapement pinion 6" and feed-rack 7, the latter adapted to engage the pinion 6 in the normal operation of the machine. whereby the carriage is fed.

for writing a line, it may be returned a full distance to the right where it may be arrested against the usual margin-stop (not shown), and the usual spacebar may then be operated to step the carriage along to a position where a new paragraph is to begin. This involves a number of operations of the space-bar and consumes considerable time.
The present invention seeks to provide a more convenient and rapid means for positioning the carriage, whereby to begin a new paragraph; and, for this purpose, there is preferably provided fixed and movable stops with means for setting the movable stop into the path of the fixed stop, so that the carriage may be quickly positioned at the letter-space determined upon. Preferably, the fixed stop is carried by the main frame, and the movable stop is carried by the earriage. The fixed stop is shown at 8 (Figures 1, 2 and 4), and is adapted to co-operate with a movable stop 9 which is carried by a hexagonal bar or shaft 10 pivoted in the right side frame 11 of the carriage. The inner end of said bar is carried-by a bracket 12, which may be adjustably secured along the carriage frame by screws 12 (Figure 3) which may engage any of a series of holes 12".
The stop 9 is shown in detail in Figure 5, and has a hexagonal hole through itsdownwardly projectm sides through which the a bar 10 passes, so t at when said bar is rocked the stop 9 is moved from the position shown in Figure 1 to the position shown in Figure 2, when it is in the path of the fixed stop 8. A spring 10 connected to stop 9 and to bracket 12 acts to hold the stop and therefore bar 10 in normal position. In order to set the stop 9, manipulative means, in the form of a key-lever 13, is provided, said lever being pivoted loosely on the platen axle 3, and having a finger-piece or key 1-1 at one end, its opposite end being slotted to engage a. pin 15 carried by an irregularlyshaped member 16 mounted on the bar 10. Rocking of the lever 13 will, therefore, act to rotate the bar 10 and said stop 9. To release the carriage from the escapement mechanism during a tabulating operation. the lever 13 has a bentover lip 17. which engages an arm 18 of a lever 18 to swing the latter about its pivot 19 and raise the rack.

arm 18 has an enlargement 21 with which the lip 17 engages to limit the movement of the lever 13.
The lever 18 may be independently rocked by a finger-piece or carriage-release key 22, as is usual in machines of this character. hen the lever 13 is released, the spring 10 connected with the stop 9, returns the lever to normal position, and. during the first part of the return movement, the lip 17 is moved away from the enlargement 21, permitting the rack to re-engage the pinion before the stop 9 is moved to normal position out of the path ofthe stop 8. The carriage is, therefore, held at thepredetermined lettersp-ace'to which it has been positioned by contact of the stops 8 and 9.
It will be understood that the hexagonal shaft 10 extends through circular holes 23 in the bracket 12 whichforms a bearing for the inner end of said shaft, as hereinbefore stated. The stop 9 is embraced by the 'bracket and is slidable lengthwise of the shaft 10 with the return spring 10 to be adjusted according to the length of indentation of the paragraph.

aving thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination of a main frame, a platen-carriage thereon, escapement mechanism, a feed-rack on said carriage to engage said escapement mechanism, a spring-drum to propel said carriage, a rack-supporting lever, a release key-lever to engage sai rack-supporting lever to disengage said rack, another key-lever to engage said supporting-lever to disengage the rack, a stop on said carriage operable by the secondnamed key-lever, and a fixed stop on the main frame.
2. The combination of a main frame, a platen-carriage thereon, escapement mechanism, a feed-rack on said carriage to engage said escapement mechanism. a springdrum to propel said carriage, a rack-supporting lever, a release key-lever pivoted on said carriage to engage said rack-supportin lever to disengage said rack. an arm on said racksupporting lever, another key-lever pivoted on said carriage and engaging with said arm to operate said supporting lever and disengage said rack, a stop on said carriage operable by the second-named key'lever, and 1 fixed stop on the main frame.
3. The combination of a main frame, a platen-carriage thereon, escapement mechanism, a feedrack on said carriage to engage said escapeinent mechanism. a spring-drum to propel said carriage. a rack-supporting lever, a release key-lever to engage said rack'supporting lever to disengage said rack, an arm on said rack-supporting lever,

The combination of a main frame, a platen-carriage thereon, escapement mechanism, a feed-rack on said carriage to engage said escapement mechanism, a spring-drum to propel said carriage, a rack-supporting lever, a release key-lever to engage said rack-supporting lever to disen age said rack, another key-lever to engage said supportinglever to disengage said rack, a rock-shaft on said carriage operable by the second-named key-lever, an adjustable stop on said rockshaft and operable thereby, and a fixed stop on the main frame.
6. The combination of a main frame, a platen-carriage thereon, tabulating mecha' nism comprising a fixed stop and a co-operative stop, a rock-shaft extending in the direction of travel of said carriage, the cooperative stop being mounted on. said rockshaft, and a bracket to support one end of the rock-shaft, said bracket embracing the co-operative stop and being settable length- Wise of the rock-shaft to adjust the'co-operative stop to various positions.
7. The combination of a main frame, a platen-carriage thereon, tabulating mechanism comprising a fixed stop on said frame, a co-operative stop on said carriage, a rockshaft mounted on said carriage and extending in the direction of its travel, the cooperative stop being mounted on said shaft, a bracket to support one end of the rockshaft, said bracket embracing the co-operative sto and being settable lengthwise of the sha to adjust the cooperative stop to various positions, and means to hold the bracket in place on said carriage.
8. The combination of a main frame, a platen-carriage thereon, escapement mechanism, a feed-rack on said carriage to engage the escapement mechanism. a spring-drum to propel said carriage, a racksupporting lever, a tabulator key on said carriage to engage said rack-supporting lever to dis engage said rack, a fixed stop on the frame, a shaft on said carriage to be rocked by said tabulator key, a stop on said shaft to be moved into the path of said fixed stop, and a return sprin for said shaft.

10. The combination of a main frame, a platen-carriage thereon, escapement mechanism, a feed-rack on said carriage to en age the escapement mechanism, a springrum to propel said carriage, a rack-supporting level, a tabulator key on said carriage to engage said rack-supporting lever to disengage said rack, a fixed stop on said frame, a shaft on said carriage to be rocked by said tabulator key, a stop on said shaft to be moved into the path of said fixed stop, and a bracket to support one end of said shaft, said bracket embracing the stop on the rockshaft, and said bracket being adjustable lengthwise of the shaft to ad ust the stop associated therewith to various positions.
11. 12. The combination of a, main frame, a platen-carriage on said frame, tabulating mechanism comprising a fixed stop and a co-operative stop, actuating means to move the co-operative stop into the path of the fixed stop, a, bracket associated with the co-operative stop, said bracket being settable in either direction of the travel of said carriage to adjust the co-operative stop to various letter-space positions, and means to ngage said bracket to retain the co-operative stop in its ljn ted position.
13. The combination of a main frame, a platen-carriage on said frame, tabulating mechanism comprising a fixed stop on said frame and a co-operative stop on said carriage, actuating means to move the cO-operative stop into the path of the fixed stop, a bracket associated with the co-operative stop, said bracket being settable on said oarriage to adjust the co-operative stop to yarious letter-space positions, and holding means for the bracket.
14. The combination of a main frame, a. platen-carriage on said frame, tabulating mechanism comprising a fixed stop and a co-operative sto actuating means comprising a rock-she t extending lengthwise of said carriage to move the co-operative stop into the path of the fixed stop, and a bracket for said rock-shaft and amociated with the co-operative stop, said bracket being settable lengthwise of said shaft to adjust the cooperative stop to various letter-space positions.
15. The combination of a main frame, a. platen-carriage on said frame, tabulating mechanism comprising a fixed stop on said frame and a cooperative stop on said carriage, actuating means comprising a rockshaft extending lengthwise of said carriage to move the co-operative stop into the path of the fixed stop, a bracket for said rockshaft, said bracket being associated with the co-o erative stop, and said bracket being setta le on said carriage and lengthwise of said shaft to adjust the co-operative st to various letter-space positions, and hol ing means for said bracket.
16. The combination of a main frame, a platen-carriage on said main frame, tabulating mechanism comprising a fixed stop and a co-operative stop, actuating means for the co-operative stop, a bracket associated with the co-operative stop, a spring between the bracket and the co-operative stop to return the latter to normal, said bracket being setta-ble to adjust the (mo-operative stop to various letter-space positions, and means engaging the bracket to retain the co-operative stop in adjusted position.
17. In tabulatingmechanism for typewriting machines, the combination of a fixed stop and a co-operative stop, a. supporting bar for said co-operative stop, a bracket to sup rt said bar, said bracket being associated with the co-operative stop, and said bracket being settable to adjust the co-operative stop to various letter-space positions, and means to actuate said supporting bar to move the co-operative stop into the path of the fixed stop.
