The machine is enclosed in a felt-lined casing having a displaceable cover with a glass. sealed sight opening; the "front wall of the casing having an opening through which the keyboard protrudes.
The carriage may bereturned after each line of typing by means of an exterior handle pivoted upon the casing at one sideof the keyboard. The handle extends to the in terior of the casing, to revolve an interior pinion and drum, the latter having a cord, one end of which is fast to the line-space lever acting upon the platen, so that, without opening the cover, the platenomay be returned to begin a new line, and at the same operation it may be automatically linespaced.
It is often desired to line-space the Work sheet without opening the cover, while the carriage is at different points in its range of travel, or in other words while thecarriage remains stationary at any point. Heretofore, the cover has been opened for this operation, and the rotation of the platen has been thereupon effected by means of a linger-wheel, which is slow. According to one of the features of this invention, the space-bar at the keyboard of the typewriter maybe held down for the purpose of looking the carriage against movement. At the same time said handle may be operated, and the line-spacing lever of the typewriter may be vibrated as many times as desired, to rotate the platen to the required extent, without moving the carriage, and without open ingthe cover. Another feature of this invention relates to novel means at the exterior of the casing for releasing the carriage in order to permit the unobstructed control thereof by. means of said carriage-return handle, for both ad- Vance and return travel of the carriage. provided is made stronger than usual, to permit the movement of the carriage without line-spacing the work-sheet. Ordinarily, however, it is desired to return the carriageand to line-space the work-sheet all in one operation, and, in this case, upon reaching the end of the return stroke of the carriage, as determined by the marginal stop, the line-spacing lever spring will yield under the direct pull of its operating cord, to swing the handle and line-space the worksheet.
Provision is made for the complete manipulation of the carriagefrom the outside of the casing to thereby render the displacement of the cover unnecessary except to replace the work-sheet.

Said mechanism may include a, button 37mounted at the end of a shaft 38, which shaft is slidably mounted on the front wall of the casing and actuates a bell-crank 39 mounted on a support 40' by means of a shoulderscrew 41. The bell crank 39 carries a link 42 pivotally mounted'thereon, which link extends'sidewardly and is operatively connected tea lever 43. Said lever is supportedby a bracket 44 and is pivotally mounted on 'a stud 45 fast to the bracket,- the bracket in turn being fast to a lower extension of the track 19 by means of rivets 46. The lever 43 carries a roller 47 at one end thereof, which is rotatably mounted on a stud 48 fast to the lever. Said roller engages with the rack 17 in a manner to swing the rack on supporting studs 49, and thereby disengage it from the pinion 16.: The support'40 may be secured to the base-board by means of a nut 50.
Sometimes it is desirable to line-space the work-sheet one or more lines withoutlreturn ingthe carriage. In this invention advantageis taken of the factthat the carriage is returned by means of the line-space lever 31 which is also effective to rotate the platen.
