To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN \VALDHEIM, a citizen of the United States, residin in Elizabeth, in the county of Union and tate of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sound-deadening casings or hoods for typewriting machines of the continuous billing variety, one form of which machine is shown in the patent to lVei-nery and Smith, No. 1,132,055, granted March 16, 1915. The sound-deadening casing orhood is in the nature of an improvement on the casin disclosed in my prior application, Serial 0. 493,7 86, filed August 20, 1921.
In the Underwood continuous billing machine, the usual letter-feeding carriage has a rearward extension, upon which a carbonsheet carriage ma move forwardly and rearwardly. A we comprising work-plies is fed in from the rear of the machine. The work-plies are interleaved with the carbonsheets attached to said carbon-carria e, and the work-plies and carbon-sheets are ed forwardly around the platen to the printing point. The work-plies usually comprise a succession of similar printed forms, and, when a form has been typed, the platen is swung upwardly and forwardly in a swingframe mounted on the carriage, to permit the sheets to be straightened out, so that the carbon-sheets may be more easily retracted or shifted to co-operate with a fresh portion of the web. The typed forms are then gaged against a gage carried by the platen-swingframe and severed by a knife carried by said frame adjacent the platen.
T he present invention provides a hood or casing which deadens the noises arising in the typing operation, while permitting easy access to and operation of the machine. For this purpose, the casing comprises a bodypart and a cover part, said body-part being provided with a large front opening to permit insertion of the machine into the casing. and being sufficiently large to receive the entire machine with the exception of the banks of keys which project forwardly from the bodypart. A detachable front plate may be mounted at the front of the body part to facilitate inserting the machine into the casing.
The body-part and cover-part completely enclose the machine with the exception of the forwardly-projecting banks of typekeys. It is desirable that the usual typing operation be carried on without removing the casing or unnecessarily raising the coverpart. For this purpose, the cover-part comprises a forward portion and a rearward portion. the latter being hinged at its rear end to the body-part, said portions forming a slot at their meeting edges through which the gage-bar of the platen-swing-frame-gage may extend. The carbon-carriage is returned by mechanism mounted on the outside of the casing, and the rearward portion of the cover part, therefore, need not be raised when the carbon-sheets are to be shifted to a new set of forms, but only when access to the carbon'carriage proper is desired, as for the purpose of renewing the carbon-sheets. To permit the platen-swingframe to be swung forwardly, the forward portion of the cover-part is in the form of a swing-frame which can be swung forwardly out of the path of the platen-swing-frame. To provide access to the front of the type writer, as for the purpose of making erasures, without necessitating the swinging of the cover-swing-frame, the latter is provided with a door which preferably has a window to permit the typewriting on the platen to be viewed.
To permit the various carriage-operating levers to be operated from outside the casing, the cover-swing-frame terminates a short distance above the front cover-plate to form a slot through which said levers extend. Since the banks of type-keys and the carriage-o )erating levers are operable from outside the casing, substantially all of the ordinary typing operations can be carried on without removing the casing or raising the cover-part.
Suitable sound-deadening material is provided for closing the slot at the meeting edges of the coverpartportions and the slot through which the carriage-operating levers extend to prevent escape of sound therethrough.

The platen being thus swung upwardly and forwardly enables the work-plies and carbon-sheet to be straightened out, so that little resistance is offered when the carbon-sheets are displaced or retracted to co-operate with a fresh portion of the web by pushing rearreciprocates. forms and without raising portion 62, the re S turn handle 40 is mounted for movement on the upper surface of portion 62 outside Q of the casing. The handle 40 is reciprocable 1 forwardly and rearwardly on portion 62 and is connected to the carbon-carriage by the engagement of the forked end 84 of a projection 82 with a lateral bar 85 fixed to the carbon-carriage, the projection 82 being fixed to the handle 40 and operating in a slot 83 in the portion 62. It will thus be seen that the carbon-carriage and the handle 40 may move together forwardly or rear wardly regardless of the position of the typewriter-carriage and the carbon-carriage relative to the machine, since the forked end 84 of projection 82 will always be in sliding engagement with bar 85, while permitting letter-feeding movement of the carriage and said bar. To return the carboncarriage, it is only necessary to push handle 40 rearwardly. Thus, it is necessary to raise cover-portion 62 only when access to the carbon-carriage is desired, as for the purpose of renewing the carbon-sheets. To guide and support the handle 40 in its movement, it may be mounted on a plate or platform 75, to the under surface of which is fixed the projection and rollers 76, said. rollers operating preferably on both sides of guide-bars 77 fixed to the rearward portion 62. The slot 83 may be kept closed by slot-closing cushions S6 and 87 (Figure 3). The rearward movement of the handle 40 may be limited when released from the carbon-carriage by the extension 82 engaging in the real-most part of the slot 83. The forward portion 61 completes the top closure of the casing and is so mounted that its rearward edge terminates adjacent the forward edge of the rearward portion and just in front of gage-bar 43 when the latter is in its normal position. A slot is thus formed between the two portions, through which the gage-bar 43 extends and in which it may travel sidewise. To close the slot, there may be provided a cushion 87 of sound-deadening mate rial. here shown as mounted adjacent the forward edge of the rearward portion, but it is to be understood that an additional cushion may be mounted, if desired, on the rear edge of the forward portion (51. The forward portion 61 terminates at its forward edge some distance above the top of front plate 70, thus forming a slot through which the various carriage-operating levers, including the line-space lever 88, may extend, so that the carriage may be operated from outside of the casing. The slot may be closed by strips of sound-deadening material 89 and 90 mounted adjacent the edges of the slot.
\Vhen a typed form is to be severed, the platen-swing-frame and the attached gage. must be swung forwardly. This forward movement, however, would ordinarily be obstructed by the forward portion 61. of the cover-part, and it is, therefore, necc sary to swing said cover-portion 61 out of the path of the platen-swing-frame and its gage, For this purpose. said portion (it is swingably mounted and preferably forms part of a cover-swing-fraine comprising depending ears 91 extending downwardly from the forward portion 61, said ears being pivoted near their lower ends at 92 preferably on brackets 93 fixed to the body-part. By swinging this coverswing-frame forwardly about pivots 92, which may be done by means of a [ingenpiecc 92*, the platenswing-frame and gage t2 may be swung forwardly without obstruction. The coverportion 61 may be swung into the position shown in Figure lwith the strip 89 resting on the extension 12, and allowed to rest in this position while the frame 17 is swung forward, the usual operations are performed with the work-plies 35 and the carbonsheets 32, and the frame 17 is restored to its usual position.
To permit access to the mechanism at the upper front of the typewriting machine without swinging the cover-swing-frame forwardly, the latter may be provided with a door 95 hinged thereto. The forward portion is provided with a transparent plate or window 98 to permit the machine in the interior of the casing to be viewed, said win dow being set preferably in the door 95.
The rear feet QT of the machine may engage in holes 100 formed in forward cxtensions 101 of the lower part of the rear wall so as to locate the machine within the casing.
The work plies 35 may be fed from any suitable source of supply into the casing through a slot 102 at the rear, said slot beinc; closed by a cushion 103.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:

A sound deadening casing for a continuous billing typewriting machine, said machine comprising a carriage, a rearward extension on said carriage, and a carbon- -arriage mounted for forward and rearward movement on said extension, said casing comprising a body-part and a cover-part, operating means mounted for forward and rearward movement on said cover-part, and a connection between said operating means and said carbon-carriage whereby forward or rearward movement of the carbon-carriage or the operating means will cause said carbon-carriage and operating means to move together, said connection permitting letter-space movement of said carbon-carriage independent of said operating means, said cover-part being hinged to said bodypartand swingable upwardly to expose said carriage extension, said connection being broken when said cover-part is swung upwardly.

A sound-deadening casing for a continuous billing typewriting machine comprising a carriage having a platen-displacing frame, a rearward extension on said carriage, and a carbon-carriage mounted for movement on said rearward extension, said casing comprising a body-part, a top, said top comprising a cover for the front of the machine, the forward edge of the cover overlying the front wall of the body-part, and a rearward portion for covering said rearward extension, and a support for each side of the cover, outside of the body-part and pivoted to the adjacent wall thereof so that the cover may be swung, with its forward edge foremost, to a position in front of the body- Part.

A sound-deadening casing for a continuous billing typewrit-ing machine comprisng a carriage having a swingable platen-displacing frame, a rearward extension on said carriage, and a carbon-carriage mounted for movement .on said rearward extension, said casing comprising a bodypart and a top com rising a cover swingframe for covering t e top of the machine at the front, and a rearward portion for covering said rearward extension, said cover swing-frame being pivoted on said bodypart and swingable forwardly, with its forward edge in advance, to uncover the top of the machine at the front, and said rearward portion being hinged at the rear to said body-part and swingable upwardly to uncover said rearward extension.

The combination with a continuous billing typewritin machine having a main frame supporting a carriage, a platen on said carriage around which a web compris ing a plurality of work-plies with inter-- leaved carbon-sheets may be fed, and an ex tension behind said frame over which the web may be conducted to the platen, of a sonml-deadening casing to enclose said machine, said casing havin a top rear cover pivoted at its rear end to said casing, which cover may be swung up to give access to the devices on the rearward etxtension, a top front cover extending over the carriage of the. machine, the front cover being pivotally supported on the sides of said casing and considerably below the cover proper, so that it may be swung forwardly and downwardly in front of the machine to give access to the carriage and enable the straightening out of the web for a carbon-shift operation.

A sound-proof casing for a typewriting machine having a carriage and devices on the carriage extending therefrom, said casing comprising a cover extending in the direction of travel of the carriage to keep the casing closed, said cover having two edges, the cover forming along said edges with the casing two slots through which said devices on the carriage may project to the exterior of the casing and move bark and forth in said slots, said cover being so supported on the casing that it may be swung to open the casing without interference with the devices extending out of the cover.

The combination wit-h a t-ypewriting machine having a carriage and a device mounted on said carriage and extending upwardly therefrom, of a soui'id-deadcning -asing for said machine, said casing comprising a body-part and a cover, said cover being pivoted on said body-part considerably below the cover proper near the front of said casing, so that the cover may be swung forwardly and downwardly towards the keyboard to give access to the platen and below the reach of the typist to the platen.

The combination of a typewriting machinehaving a frame with a keyboard-extension and a carriage having a forwardlyextending finger-piece, a sound-deat lening casing for said machine, said casing comprising a body-part and a cover co-operating with the top of the casing front to form a slot to accommodate the travel of the finger-piece, the cover being so pivoted as, when swung forwardly and downwardly, to open the casing, said finger-piece being curved downwardly at the front of the upper edge of the casing front to avoid interference with the forward swinging of the cover.

A sordid-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a frame with a keylward-extension and a carriage, comprising a body-portion having protruding pockets atthe top to accommodate the travel of the carriage, brackets extending downwardly from the outer ends of said pockets, and a cover having downward extensions at its sides pivoted on said brackets for swinging said cover to open position.
The combination with a continuous billing typewriting machine having a reciprocable carbon-carrier, of a sound-deadening casing having a cover, an operating handle supported to travel on the outside of said cover, and a connection extending through a slot in said cover from said handle to said carboncarrier, said connection to travel back and forth in said slot.
A soui'id-proof casing for a typewriting machine, having a carriage and devices on the carriage extending therefrom, said casing comprising a cover extending in the direction of travel of the carriage to keep the casing closed. said cover having two edges, the cover forming along said edges with the casing two slots through which the devices on the carriage project to the exte rior of the casing and move back and forth in said slots, said cover being so supported on the casing that it may be swung to open the casing without interference with the devices extending out of the cover, and. yielding devices at both edges of the cover to keep the slots sealed and enable the devices on the carriage to move back and forth freely in said slots.

The combination with a continuous billing t-ypewriting machine having a displaeeable platen to facilitate straightening 8 means out of the web conducted around said platen, so as to enable the displacement of carbon-sheets interleaved between the workplies of the web, of a sound-deadening casmg for said machine, said casing having a cover thereon, said cover having two downwardlysextending arms by which the cover is pivotally supported on the sides of said casing, so that it may be swung forwardly and downwardly to enable the swinging up of the platen and the straightening out of the web.

The combination with a continuous billing typewriting machine havin a main frame supporting a carriage, a p aten on said-carriage around which a web comprising a plurality of work-plies with interleaved carbon-sheets may be fed, an extension behind said frame over which the web may be conducted to the platen, and devices on said extension, of a sound-deadening casing to enclose said machine, said casing having a top rear cover pivoted at its rear end to said casing, which cover may be swung up to give access to the devices on the rearward extension, a front top cover extending over the carriage of the machine, said front cover being pivotally supported on the sides of said casing and considerably below the cover proper, so that it may be swung forwardly and downwardly in front of the machine to give access to the carriage and enable the straightening out of the web for a carbon-shifting operation, and a door pivoted on the forward cover, which door may be open rearwardly to give access to the printing line of the platen for the purpose of making erasures.

The combination with a continuous billing typewriting machine comprising a carriage including a platen around which a continuous web comprising work-plies with interleaved carbon-sheets may be fed, and a carbon-carrier shiftable away from the platen to shift the carbon-sheets relatively to the work-plies, of a sound-proof casing to enclose said machine, a fingerpiece mounted on the outside of said casing, and a connection from said finger-piece to said carbon-carrier to actuate the latter at, right angles to the travel of said cartinge to shift said carbons while the casing remains closed.

The combination with a continuous billing typewriting machine comprising a carriage having a gage-bar extending upwardly from the carriage towards the rear of the machine, and a line-space handle extending forward from said carriage, of a sound-deadening casing for said machine, said casing comprisin a body-part and a cover pivoted on said ody-part, said cover forming along its opposite ed es two slots with the body-part of the casing, namely, a forward slot and a rearward slot, the
gage-bar extending through the rearward slot and the line-space handle extending through the forward slot, the cover being arranged to swing in a direction not to be interferred with by the line-space handle and the gagebar to open the casing to give access to the interior.

A combined typewriting machine and sound-deadening casing therefor, the casing comprising a body-part and a hinged cover member having a window for viewing the work, the machine having a keyboard projecting forwardly through the casing, and said cover hinged upon said casing to swing forwardly and downwardly to a position in front of the keyboard.
46. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, comprising a body-part having an opening through which the key board of the machine extends, and a twopart cover seated on the top of the body when closed, the front pait mounted to swing outwardly beyond the keyboard when open, thereby giving access to the keyboard.
