TYPEWRITING MACHINE.'
Application led March 17, 1926. Serial No. 95,222.
rlhis inventionrelates to sound-deadening casings for typewriting machines, and more particularlyto means for feeding a continuous web to the platen of ka typewriting. machine enclosed in the casing. j
In certain classes of work, such as, for instance,l when typing telephone messages, it is customary to type the message rapidly, directly as it is being received over the telephone. 1n such cases, it is of importance that the machine be operated in a sounddeadening casing, otherwise the noise arising from the operation ofthe machine is liable to interfere with the clear reception of the message. The work requires the use of a roll or pa'ck of paper web, Which, according to the present invention, isA inserted at the rear of the casing, and then passed around the enclosed platen, and thence out again to the exterior of the easing. The typed messages are torn off by a knife, which may be secured to the wall of the casing at the delivery side thereof. A difficulty arises owing to the relative movement between the carriage and the walls of the casing, since the web which is carried by the carriage drags along the Walls of the casing One of the features of this invention relates to means for obviating this difficulty.
'To this end, it is proposed to slot the rear wall of the casing and to extend through the slot, to the exterior. thereof, a pair of web-guiding and supporting plates carried by the carriage, and to pass both the incoming and outgoing portions of the worksheet between said plates, thereby preventing the vwork-sheet from contacting with the sides of the slot.
yAnother feature relates to means for severing the typed forms or portions of the web into form' length without necessitating the opening of the casing cover. According to this feature of the invention, the web is torn off, after typing, against a r knife fast to the edge of the slot.
According to the method of handling the work in this invention, the web is passed over a rea'r table, which extends through the slot in the wall of the casing, and is guided down a chute at therear ofthe platen, and is then inserted around the platen and over a front table, which extends also to the outsider of the. casing through the same slot through which the rear table protrudes. `Over said front table there is provided ay guard which serves as a means for preventing contact between the typed forms and the upper side ofthel slot in the casing, which, for the purpose of preventing thefleakage ofsound-waves, may be. provided with slot-sealing devices fast to the edges ofthe slot. After.` typing each form, the platen is rotated by meansof thev line-space handle, and then the typed form is torn .off yagainst the knife, at the delivery side of the slot.v -l
From the foregoing description of operation, itwill bel noted that the `forms vmay be typed withoutnecessitating the opening of the cover of the sound-deadening casing, as has been the practice heretofore. However, the cover may ,be displaced when desired by just swinging it rearwardlyfin the regular way. It will also be noted,` that in order to further increasethe efficiency of the device, a shiftless machine is provided, which, as is well known, is much easier `to operate at a high rate of speed, sincethe operative is not distractedby the case-shifting operation.
" Other features and after appear.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view, in elevation, and shows the inventionapplied to an Underwood typewriting machinein a sounddeadening casingL l e ,v Figure ,2 is va similar view, showingvthe coverv inits partly-open position.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional. view through advantages will hereinline 41-4 of Figure 1, and shows the carriage moved all the .way to one end of the casing.
Figure 4: is a cross-sectional view through the line 5-5 of Figure 1, and shows the rear table and theslot-sealing devices..
The .Underwood typewriting machine with which this invention is. illustrated includes a frame 10 having a forward extension' 11, for enclosing banks of keys '12, whichl keys, when operated, are effective to swing type-bars 13, to n' strike a platen lt.. Said platen is revolubly mounted on .a platenshaft 15, and may be rotated by nieans ofV finger-pieces 16, and also by means of a linespace lever 17. The platen is carried by a carriage-frame 18, which isv mounted `for letter-space travel along. rails 19, carried by the frame 10. l
the use of the machine, there lis provided a.
sound-deadening casing, which completely encloses the machine, except' for the keyboard-extension 11 and the line-spacelever 17, which protrude to the exterior thereof.
Said casing includes a lower. member 2O and'A a hood or cover 21, which is swingable on a hinge 22 fast to the lower member and to the cover. The lower member is supported by a base-plate 23, upon which. the feet of the machine rest. 1
In order tofacilitatel the handling' off a long web without necessitating1 thedisplacement of thelcover, thereislprovided al rear table24 mounted on a platen-frame 25 by means of supporting` brackets 26. Said table/extendsV tothe outside of the casing through' aj slot 27, which extends substantially the. full width of the cover. The platen-frame 25 carries also a fronttable 28, which is fast to abracket 29 by means of rivets 30.y Said front table carries-a deflectingy plate 32 fast thereto by means of'rivcts 33, which plate co-operates with the rear table 24 to forma throat through which a -work-she'etv 50,- whichv is drawn from a-roll 51 at the rear of the'machine, is passed and isconductedto'the platento'be engaged by feed-rolls 31; The work-sheet is heldl in f engagement with the fronttable by` means of aiinge'r 52, and, at' its uppermost end, the front* table is providedl with a plate 34, Whichplatejis spaced` from the plate 32just enough to permit the free feeding of the work-sheet therebetween.` SaidA plate 32 protrudes to the exterior of the casing through the slot: 27. 1n order 'to prevent the emission of sound through theslot 27, there are providedslot-sealingdevices, one at each sideof the slot: andbearingrespectively on the under. sidev of therear table24 and' over the' plate 341 Said sealing devicesmayv be made of flat'rubber strips 33A enclosing a rubber tubing 37, the strips. being fast; to the sides of the` slot by meansof screws `38: 1t will beunderstood that'the edgesV 53 of the rear table 24am-curled up as shown in'lfigL ure 4, thereby providing aguardf'tofprevent the'edges of-'the plate 34 from engaging anddamaging the slot-sealing devices.
When, for any reason, it' is desiredto open the'cover, the same isswung rearwardly to a position as shown'inligure 2, and, when so doing, the cover'is moved away from the tables mountedA on the carriage, as shown in Figure 2. AIn order to facilitate the' holding of the slot-sealing devices to the sides ofthe slot, there are providedplates 39 and 40,
which are fastened to the cover by means ofthevscrews 38.'
In orderl to facilitate the operation ofthe machine, it is proposed vto luse anUnderwoodi ofthe shiftlesstype, tha-tis to say, amachine Which is operated alwaysin the same case, andhas -onlyone row off' capital letter' typesl 41. Suena; machine can be operatedV at a much higher speed, for the reason that the operator is not distracted` by. the caseshifting operation. Another advantage of using such type of. machine is to facilitate reading of the typedmatter.
After typing each form, the platen is rotated by operating the line-space lever 17, and the typed form is fed to the exterior of the casing. Then Vthe form is torn ofi" against a knife 42, whichis fast to the upper edge of the slot 27 by means ofi the screws 38 and an intervening angular strip 43.
For the purpose of preventing the emissioni offr sound through'a slot* 44 through which the line-space lever 17 protrudes, there are provided slot-sealing devices fast to the cover and tothe casing by means of screws 46. Y
lnorder.L to render typingv visible inside of the casing, the Underwoodcasing isusually provided with a glassv panel 47, which is fast to the cover by means o-fclips'43 and 49, the latter being held by means of the screws 46, which holdthe upper slot-sealing device 45.
Variations mayv lie-resorted towithin the scope ofthe invention, and portions ofthe improvements may beused without others.
