TYPEWRITING MACHINE This invention relates to manifolding typewriting machines of the continuous billing type, in which a continuous composite sheet or web is fed around a cylindrical plateinthe web comprising several plies of work-sheets having successive corresponding forms printed thereon, said plies being sometimes separated fromeach other and sometimes joined at their side edges to form a fan-folded web, the various plies having carbon-sheets interleaved therebetween. The invention relates more particularly to means to facilitate the relative displacing or' shifting between the carbon-sheets and the work-sheets, or, in other words, the shifting of the carbon-sheets from the typed set of forms to a fresh set of forms. The invention further relates to means for determining the relative shifting between the carbon-sheets and the work-sheets.
In the Underwood continuous billing ma: chine, shown in the patent to Wernery 8; Smith, No. 1,132,055, dated March 16, 1915, a cylindrical platen is employed, and said platen is displaceable upwardly by means of a swing frame, to permit the composite web to be straightened out preparatory to displacing or shifting thev carbon-sheets along the work-sheets to a fresh set of forms. There is also employed in said machine a table extending rearwardly from the platen, upon which a carbon-carrier is mounted to travel back and forth towards and away" from the platen, said carbon-carrier having the ends of the interleaved carbon-sheets connected thereto, and said carbon-carrier being movable rearwardly by a handle while the work-sheets are drawn forwardato a suitable gage.
A. feature of the present invention is the provision of means for facilitating a relative shifting of the carbon-sheets and the work-sheets without lifting the platen, the platen being of the non-displaceable kind and consequently always in typing position. To this end there is provided a table extending from the rear of the platen, said table having a carbon-carrier movable thereon towards-and away from the platen. The carbon-carrier in the present invention, however, is used to move the composite web rearwardly, so as to free it from the platen 1 and bring the carbon-sheets to a straightened- Application filed July 10,

out position preparatory to causing relative displacing between the carbon-sheets and the work-sheets.
After the carbon-sheets have been straightened out, the leading edges of the worksheets are then grasped by the typist and drawn forwardly above the platen, while the carbon-carrier is retained in its rearmost position, to a suitable gage which determines the amount of relative shifting movement. The typed forms may then be severed from the worksheets, after which the composite web may be reinserted around the platen and advanced tobring the first line to be typed to the printing point.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of means for facilitating a rapid reinsertion of the composite web around the platen and also for quickly advancing the composite web the proper distance around the platen, so that the firsttline to be typed on the fresh forms is brought to the printing point. To this end there is provided.
on the carbon-carrier table, normally ineffective feeding mechanism, said mechanism comprising a handle which may be actuated to advance the composite web, the leading end .of' which is conducted downwardly towards the platen by means of a deflector.
In the present invention the carbon-carrier table is pivotally mounted on a secondary table or frame secured to the typewriter carriage, so that the'forward end of said carbon-carrier table may be swung upwardly to free the leading edges of the web from the web-deflector, that the leading ends of the work-sheets may be grasped by the typist and then drawn forward to a gage. Said table is also swingable to this position to ]y, said handle being so connected with the knife and the gage as to move them to their effective positions.
A further feature of the invention resides in the provision of means for locking the carbon-carrier in its rearmost position when the carbon-carrier table is swung upwardly and for clamping the work-sheets, so as to prevent an accidental forward movement of the carbon-sheets and the work-sheets during a sheet-gaging and carbon-displacing operation.
A further feature of the invention relates to means for retaining the carbon-carrier to hold the carbon-sheets and consequently prevent accidental displacement thereof during the shifting of the work-sheets relatively thereto.
Still another feature of the invention relates to means for clamping the work-sheets to prevent accidental advancement or shifting thereof during a severing operation.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of an Underwood typewriting machine, showing the invention applied thereto, the parts being shown in position with the bottom of the typed set of forms near and below the printing point.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional side view similar to Figure 1, but shows the feed-rollers cast off, the composite web drawn rearwardly around the platen, and the table-lifting handle swung upwardly to bring the knife and the gage to their effective positions.
- Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3, and shows the carbon-carrier table swung upwardly to a convenient position for sheetgaging and tearing-01f of the typed forms.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view of the forward portion of the carbon-carrier table, the parts being shown in the same position as Figure 3, except that the work-sheets have been advanced to the gage prior to severing them, as shown in dot-and-dash lines.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view of the rear portion of the work-web table, showing the pivoted section thereof swung farther than in Figure 4, to clamp the work-sheets before a severing operation.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary sectional side vlew, showing the parts in position after the carbon-carrier table has been lowered. the web-feeding handle being also shown as moved bodily to bring the feed-rollers against each other.

The invention is shownas applied to an Underwood standard typewriting machine, in which type-bars 10, when operated by keys, not shown, swing upwardly and rearwardly to print against the front of a cylindrical platen 11, mounted on a carriage 12 comprising end bars 13 connected to each bar 21 and a rear paper-table 22, over whicha composite work-web 23 is led from the back of the machine to the rear and beneath the platen where there are provided feedrollers 24 and 25 to assist in feeding the work-web around the platen. .The platen may be rotated by a finger-wheel 26 or linespace wheel 27, the latter being operable by suitable line-space mechanism, not shown. The platen-frame is supported on the carriage-frame for case-shifting movements in the usual way to present theplaten to lowercase types 30 or upper-case types 31 on the type-bars. The feed-rollers may be released by mechanism operable by the regular feedroller release handle 28, so as to provide an unobstructed path around the platen when adjusting the wor -web around the platen.
The attachment comprises a horizontal table 32 extending rearwardly from the machine and over which the composite web 23, comprising work-sheets 33 with interleaved carbon-sheets 34, is conducted to the platen. Said table comprises two sections, namely, a relatively fixed or lower section 35 and a swingable or upper section 36. The relatively fixed section 35 comprises end bars- 37 connected to each other by a front crossbar 40 and a rear cross-bar 41', and is supported to travel with the carriage 12. The table 32 is connected with said carriage by rearwardly-extending brackets 42 secured to the under side of the carriage-bar 14 and to the under side of the'cross-bar 40 of the relatively fixed section of said table. The table-section 35 is supported at its rear by means comprising brackets 43 secured to the end bars 37 of the relatively fixed table-section 35. The brackets 43 have rollers 44 to run on a rod 45 secured to a frame com-. prising two end plates 46 extending rearwardly from the main frame 16 of the typewriter. The upper table-section 36 comprises two end bars 47 connected to each other by a front cross-bar 50 and a rear cross-bar 51, the two end bars having rails 52 secured thereto to guide a c arbon-carrier 53 towards and away from the platen. The carbon-carrier 53 comprises a base-plate 54, to the under side of which are attached four rollers 55, two at each side of the machine to run on the rails 52. The carboncarrier further comprises stepped uprights 56, one at each side of the machine, on which carbon-blades or holders '57 are detachably mounted, said carbon-blades having the rear ends of the carbon-sheets 34 connected thereto. The work-web, which may be fan-folded or be composed of separated plies, may be conducted from any suitable source of sup ply upwardly at the rear of the machine to a turning bar 60, supported by standards 61 and provided with suitable end gages 62 for the web 23. The web is then conducted forwardly through the carbon-carrier and over another turning bar 63 toward the platen. The turning bar 63 is secured to the forward ends of the end bars 47 of the table-section 36, and is provided with suitable end gages 64 to further guide the web. From the turning bar 63 the web is conducted downwardly to the platen, between the feed-rollers 24 and 25 and upwardly at the front across the printing point, where the web may be held against the platen by the usual wing-scales (not shown) and one or more fingers 59 extending rearwardly towards the platen from the usual front rail of the carria e.
s the] typing of a form proceeds, the carbon-carrier 53 travels towards the platen on the table 32. -When the typing of a form has been completed, it is desirable to sever the typed forms from the work-sheets. Be-
, fore this is done, however, it is necessary to shift the carbon-sheets relatively to the work-sheets to bring the leading edges of the carbon-sheets beyond the bottoms of the typed forms, in other words, to shift the carbon-sheets to a fresh set oruntyped set of forms. Todo this, the composite web is withdrawn around the platen to free it from said platen, so that that portion of the composite web including the carbon-sheets 34 maybe brought to a straightened-out position. the platen retainingits usual typing position, after which the work-sheets may be shifted relatively to the carbon-sheets.
When it is desired to straighten out the composite web, the feed-rollers 24 and 25 are first cast off by depressing the usual feed-roller release handle 28. The carboncarrier is then pushed rearwardly by means of a handle 65 extending forwardly therefrom until it is arrested against a fixed stop '66 on the end bar 47, the parts being arrested in the position shown in Figure 3, where the composite web is straightened out, and the leading edges of the work-sheets extend slightly beyond the turning bar 63 and beneath the upper edge of a guide 67used in reinserting the web around the Y platen, as hereinafter described. C
After thecomposite web has been straightened out, asshown in Figure 3, it is desirable to bring it to a position where the "leading edges of the work-sheets may readily be grasped, so that the work-sheets may be drawn forwardly while the carbon-sheets are held against movement. To this end the upper section 36 of the table 32 may be swung upwardly at its forward end by tent of shifting of the work-sheets relatively to the carbon-sheets; After the work-sheets have been drawn to the gage they may be severed by a knife 7 Barranged beneath the composite web and slightly in advance of the leading edges of the carbon-sheets, as indicated in Figure 5, the severing of the forms being accomplished by drawing the plies against said knife, downwardlytowards the platen.
After the typed forms have been severed from the work-sheets, the swingable tablesection is lowered to bring the leading edges of the work-sheets behind the guide 67, the upper end of which is curved rearwardly at 77, so that the composite web may readily be reinserted around the platen, by moving the web forwardly against said guide 67, which directs the web downwardly towards theplaten and over the usual paper-table 22, the lower end of which is provided with the usual deflector 78 to guide the web around the platen and upwardly across the printing point. It will be understood that this reinsertion of the composite web may readily be accomplished by hand, but, to expedite the reinsertingoperation, there is provided web-feeding means which is effec- 'tive not only to reinsert the web, but to locate it in the proper positioncaround the platen with the first line of writing at the printing poiiit.
The web-feeding mechanism may comprise two feed- rollers 80 and 81. The feedroller 80 is disposed beneath the web 23 and is provided with a shaft 82 which may be .rotatably supported in the end bars 47 of the pivoted table-section, the feed-roller 81 being disposed directly above the lower feed-roller 80. Said feed-rollers are nor-j .mally separated, as shown in Figure 1, to afford a free passage of the web therebetween. Theupper feed-roller 81 is secured to a shaft 83 rotatably supported in arms 84 extending forwardly from and secured to a rock-shaft 85 pivotally supported in brackets or end plates 86 secured to the sides of the end bars 47 of thepivoted table-section 36, said rock-shaft and said arms forming a sort of frame 87 to support the upper feedroller 81. The upper feed roller is normally held away from the lower feed-roller by a return spring 90 connected to a downwardly;extending arm 91 of the feed-rollercarrying frame 87 said arm engaging a stop 92 extending inwardly from the right-hand one of the end plates 86. The feed-rollersupporting frame 87 is provided at its right hand end withan upwardly-extending arm 93 having pivotally sup ported thereon a feed-roller operating handle 94 by means of a headed stud 95. The handle or lever 94 is provided with a gear-sector 96 meshing with a pinion 97 secured to the feed-roller shaft 83, so that the feed-roller81 may be rotated by said operating handle 94. The operating handle 94 is provided with a return spring 94*, said spring being effective to hold said handle against a fixed stop 94", Figure 1, extending from the arm 93 and through a slot 98 in the feed-roller-operat-' ing lever.
To reinsert the web around the platen, it is merel necessary to pull forwardly on the feed-r0 er-operatlng handle 94 until it is arrested by the stop 94 which 'engages the other end of the slot 98, Figure 8. During 97, said feed-roller being rotated in a counterclockwise direction, to thus advance the work-web 23 against the guide 67, which conducts the web downwardly toward the platen, as previously described. The operator moves said handle until it is arrested against the stop 94", as shown in Figure 8,
said stop determining the extent of movement required to feed the web with the first line of typing to the printing point. It will be understood that the web is of sufiicient stiffness to be pushed around'the platen, and
that the feed-rollers 24 and 25 are in their released positions at this time. After the web has been reinserted around the platen and located with reference to the printing point, the feed-roller-operating lever 94 and thefeed-roller-carrying frame 87 are returnedto their normal positions by their return springs. The usual feed-rollers 24 and 25 are then thrown on, so that the web-may be advanced around the platen, which may be done by the finger-wheel 26 or by the a regular line-spacing mechanism including the line-space wheel 27.
The gage 75 is mounted on a gage-bar 100 and is adjustably secured thereto for the different lengths of forms. Said gage-bar is secured to a rock-shaft 101 pivoted in the end plates 86 which support the feed-roller frame. Said gage-bar normally occupies the position seen in Figure '1, that it may be out of the path of the work-web so as not to interfere therewith as it is fed upwardly in front of the platen, said gage-bar being swingable forwardly and downwardly to the position indicated in Figure 3, preparatory to a gaging operation, the guide 67 being cut out at 99 to provide clearance for the gagebar when swung down. e
The knife 76 also occupies a normally ineffective position, as indicated in Figure 1, where it is out of the path of the web 23. Said knife comprises two arms 102 extending upwardly therefrom by which it is piv oted on studs 103, so thatit may be swung upwardly to its effective position, indicated in Figure 3. y
The gage 75 and the knife 76 may be rendered effective simultaneously, by means of the" table-lifting handle 70. For this pu pose, the handle is connected to the lefthand one of the knife-supporting arms 102, so that, when said handle 1s swung upwardly, the knife is swung upwardly to its ef'- ,fective position thereby. Exte ding rearwardly from one or both of the knife-supporting arms may be provided gage-operatmg arms 104 having pin-and-slot-connections 105 with arms 106 secured to the gagecarrying rock-shaft 101, to render the gage effective by means of the handle 70 while the knife is also being brought to its effective position. It will be understood that the handle 70 first has a pivotal movement before the table-section 36 israised, during which time the gage 75 and the knife 76 are rendered effective. The pivotal movement of said handle 70 ceases when one of the gage-operating arms comes into contact with. a stop 107 on one of-the side plates, after which the handle is moved bodily to swing the table-section 36 upwardly at the gtront and about its pivot 72. A return spring 108 is provided, co-operating with one o the gage-operating arms, against the tension of which the gage and the knife may be moved to their effective positions, said spring holding the gage and knife in their normal positions through the medium of the arm 104 which it holds against a fixed stop 110.
To prevent accidental shifting of the carbon-shee ts during a work-sheet-shifting operation, the carbon-carrier 53 is held in its retracted position. To this end, the baseplate 54 of the carbon-carrier is provided position shown in Fi with an ear 111 having an opening 112 therein, into which a finger 113, secured to the rod 72 of the fixed table-section 35, passes when the pivoted table-section 36 is swung upwardly to a sheet-gaging position,Figure 4. Thus the carbon-carrier is retained in its rearmost position without any attention upon the art of the operator.
To hol the web-plies or work-sheets against accidental shifting, which mayk happen while severing the typed forms, t ere is provided a clamp-element 114 comprising a cross-bar 115 carried b two arms 116 secured to a rock-shaft 117 pivotally supported in brackets 118 extending upwardly from the base-plate 54 of the carbon-carrier. Said clamp-element is normally held in'its ineffective position against a fixedstop 120 on an extension 121 of one of the brackets 118, by a return spring 122, and is rendered effective by swinging the pivoted table-section upwardly to the sheet-severing position shown in Figure 6, from the sheet-gaging position shown in Figure 4. - render the clamp-element effective, there is secured to the end bar 37 of the fixed tablesection 35 an upwardly-extending arm 123, which engages a pin 124 on an extension-125 of one of the arms 116 of the clamp-element 114 when the pivoted table-section is swung from the position shown in Figure 4 to the e 6, the cross-bar of the clamp-element being thus swung against the rear turning bar 60, to thus clamp the work-sheets against said bar and consequent- ,prevent accidental forward movement,
1 thereof during the severing of the typed forms.- The cross-bar 115 of the clamp-element when it engages the turning bar 60 serves also to limit the upwardswinging of the pivoted table-section and arrests it in its extreme operated position.
By'an inspection of Figure 2, it will be seen that the arms 116 are bent inwardlyto,
the clamp-bar 115, which is short enough to fit between the end gages or side guides 62 which are adjustably mounted on the tuming bar 60 according to the various widths of webs which may be used in the machine. It will also be seen that the am 123 is bent laterally into the path of the pin 124 with which it engages to render the clamping element 114 effective.
Detent-springs 126 are provided to hold the forward portion of the table- sections 35 and 36 against each other, said detentsprings being secured to the side bars 37 of the relatively fixed table-section 35, the free ends of said springs being suitably shaped to embrace the cross-bar 50 located at the forward end of the pivoted table-section.

In a typewritingmachine, the combination of a carriage, a platen on said carriage, means comprising a. feed-roller to feed a work-sheet around the platen, said means being arranged at the introductory side of the platen and being independent of said laten, a finger-piece to operate said feed-r01 er, means to limit the rotativemovement of said feed-roller, a common support for said feed-roller and said finger-piece, said support being movable to move the feed-roller bodily to bring it'into contact with the work-sheet, after which the fingerpiece may be moved relatively to the'sup port to rotate said feed-roller, a-table for V the work-sheet, brackets on said table on which said common su port is mounted, a return spring connected between said common support and one of said brackets, and a return spring connected between said com 7 mon support and said finger-piece.
7. In a continuous web typewriting machine, the combination of a platen around which a composite web, comprising plies of work-sheets with interleaved carbon-sheets, may be fed, means to facilitate straightening out that portion of .the web includingithe carbon-sheets, so that there may be a relative shifting between the work-sheets and the carbon-sheets, a knife for severing-the typed portions of the work-sheets while the web is in its straightened-out position, and means independent of the platen to mechanically present the leading edge of the web to the platen to re-establish the typing relation of the web around the platen.

may be fed, means to facilitatestraightening out that portion of the web including the carbon-sheets, so that there may be a relative shifting between the .work-sheets and the carbon-sheets, a knife for severing the 0 typed portions of the work-sheets while the web is in its straightened-out position, and means including feed-rollers operable independently of the platen to reestablish the typing relation of the web around the platen.
9. In 'a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen around which a composite web, comprising plies of work-sheets with interleaved carbon-sheets, may be fed, means at the rear of the platen to withdraw the composite web-around the platen to free the carbonsheets from the platen and bring that portion of the'web including the carbon-sheets to'a straightened-out position, so that the work-sheets may be drawn forwardly over .the platen to shift them relatively to the carbon-sheets, a gage to determine the extent of shift of said work-sheets, a knife to wver the typed portions of the work-sheets, and means at the rear of said platen and mounted independently thereof to feed and re-insert thewveb around the platen to a definite printing position.
10.In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen around which a composite web, comprising plies of work-sheets with interleaved carbon-sheets, may be fed, means to so posltion the web that there may be a relative shifting betweenthe carbon-sheets and the work-sheets, and means to re-establish the printing relation 'of the web around said! platen, said last-named means comprising feed-rollers, one of said feed-rollers being mounted on a pivoted frame, a finger-piece connected to rotate said. feed-rollers, a spring to return said finger-piece with respect to said feed-rollers, and a return spring for said frame.
11. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage-a platen around which a composite web, comprising plies of work-sheets with interleaved carbon-sheets, may be fed, means to so position the web that there may be a relative shifting between the carbon-sheets and the work-sheets, and means to re-establish the printing relation of the web around said rollers,

platen, said means comprising feed-rollers, one of said feed-rollers being mounted on a pivoted frame, a finger-piece connected-to rotate said feed-rollers, a spring to return said finger-piece with respect to said feedand a return spring for said frame, the tension of the first-mentioned spring being greater than the tension'of the secondmentioned spring, so as to cause the fingerpiece to first move bodily with the frame to bring the swingable feed-roller into co-operative relation with the other feed-roller, after which the finger-piece may be rotated against its return spring and relatively to said frame to rotate the connected feedroller.

In a'typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen on said carriage, atable to supporta work-sheet at the rear of the platen, work-presenting means comprising a feed-roller to sheet to and partly around said platen, said means being supported on said table, a finger-piece mova le by a single stroke to rapidly rotate said feed-roller, means to limit the rotative movement of said fingerpiece and hence said feed-roller, a common support for said feed-roller and said fingeriece, said support being mo able on sai table to move the feedroller odily to bring it into contact with said work-sheet, after which the finger-piece may be moved relatively to said support to'rotate said feedroller, a guide to direct the forward end of the work-sheet presented in a horizontal position downward toward the platen, and a guide at the lower end of the first-mentioned guide to directthe work-sheet around the platen.

In acontinuous billing typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen around which a composite web, comprising plies of work-sheetswith interleaved carbon-sheets, may be fed, means to withdraw the composite webaround the platen to free the carbon-sheets from the platen and bring that portion of the web including the carbon-sheets to a straightened-out position, so that the work-sheets may be drawn forwardly to shift them relatively to the carbon-sheets, a knife to sever the, typed portions of the work-sheets while the web is in its straightened-out position, a table over which the web may be conducted to said platen, said table being pivoted so that it may be swung to a convenient position for shifting the work-sheets and for severing the typed portions thereof, said knife being normally inefi'ective, a handle having a pivotal movement on said table to render said knife effective, and a stop to arrest the pivotal movement of said handle, said handle,
after it reaches said stop, being effective to move bodily and swing said table.

In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combinationof a carriage, a platen on said carriage around which a composite web, comprising plies of work-sheets with interleaved carbon-sheets, may be fed, a straight extension pivoted on said car riage, over which said web is conducted; a carbon-carrier on said extension, to which the ends of the carbon-sheets are attached, means to move the carbon-carrier rearwardly on said extension to withdraw the web around the platen and free the carbon-sheets from=said platen, said extension being swing able to bring the web to a sheet-severing position, a knife to sever the typed portions of the work-sheets, and holding means to be rendered effective during the swinging movement of said extension to prevent slipping of the work-sheets during a severing operation, said holding means serving also to arrest the extension in its extreme actuated position. i

a table at-the rear of said carriage, over which the web is conducted towards the said platen, means to swing said pivoted section to an abnormal position, so that there may be accomplished a shifting of the worksheets relatively to the carbon-sheets, a knife to sever the typed portions of the worksheets, a clamp-element on said carbon-carrier, and means to actuate said clamp-ele said platento free the carbon-sheets from which a multiple-ply web, interleaved with carbons, may be directed to the carriage, a carrier on the table to which the carbons are connected at their rear, and which is movable toward the platen for line-space feed of the web around the platen in the typing operation, means for moving the carboncarrier rearward on the table for conditioning the web for relative shift of the carbons and work-webs, the table being effective,
when in displaced condition, to lock the carbon-carrier in retracted position preliminary to such relative shift of the carbons and work-webs, a knife moved from a normally ineffective position to web-severing position during the table-displacing operation, the knife being effective to shear the typed portions of the work-webs from untyped portions after such relative shift of the carbons and work-webs, a clamp for gripping the work-webs against displacement during such shearing operation, and asingle operating handle associated with said table, the handle effecting displacement of the table, and thereby causing the knife to assume its web-shearing position and the clamp to grip the web.
40. In a typewriting machine, a platen, a platen-carriage, a table over which a multiple-ply web, interleaved with carbons, may be directed to the"carriage, a carrier on the table to which the carbons are connected at their rear, and which is movable toward the platen for line-space feed of the web around the platen in the typing operation, means for moving the carbon-carrier rearward on the table for conditioning the web for relative shift of the carbons and work-webs, means for locking the carbon-carrier in retracted position preliminary to such relative shift of the carbons and work-webs, means for severing the typed portions of the workwebs after such relative shift of the carbons and work-webs, means for clamping the work-webs against displacement during such severing operation, and means common to the carbonrcarrier-loeking means and .the clamp for operating the same; said lastnamed means acting to lock the carbon-carrier while the clamp is still released, so that the work-webs may be shifted relatively to the carbons, and thereupon acting to clamp the work-webs for severance thereof.
41. In a typewriting machine, a platen, means for clamping a work-web against movement in the machine, a web-severing device movable from a normal position to an effective position, and means common to the clamp and the Web-severing device for operating the one in conjunction with the other. a

In a typewriting machine, a platen, a gage to which a web may be drawn to determine the length to. be severed therefrom, a clamp for holding the web against displacement during the severing operation, and means common to the gage and the clamp the other, so that the web may first be drawn to position for severing, and thereafter clamped.

In a typewriting machine, a platen, a gage to which a web may be drawn to determine the length to be severed therefrom, aweb-severing device, a clamp for holding for operating the one in conjunction with the web against displacement during the v severing operation, and means common to the gage, the clamp, and the web-severing device, for operating the one in conjunction with the others.

In a machine for typing upon a carbon-interleaved work-pack, a platen upon the printing surface of which the carbon-interleaved work-pack is disposable, a carbon holder, a work-pack clamp on said carbonholder, a work-web support, a frame mov able relatively to said support and upon -which said carbon-holder is supportable and means on said support cooperable with said carbon-holder and work-pack clamp to lock the carbon-holder against movement relatively to said frame during one component of the frames movement and to render said Work-pack clamp operative during another component of said movement.
