This invention relates to fan-fold typewriting machines, and more particularly to the typingand manipulating therein of a fanfolded web of narrow short forms or slips, together with a fan-folded web having forms wider and longer than the narrow forms.
One feature of the present invention s a new organization of means for the handling and typing of two fan-folded webs simultaneously in the machine.
Another feature relates to the carbonstripping, whereby the carbons are stripped from both sets of webs without any direct handling of a condensed day-book recordweb.
Still another feature relates to the means for guiding and holding the day-book recordweb on the front paper-table during the operation of the machine, said means be1ng readily displaced to permit the severing of each typed condensedrecord-web form.
It will be understood that stock-brokers oflices are required to send a condensed record of each days sales to the clearance department of the stock exchange. This daily report is required to be made on forms, sometimes called day-book-sheets, of prescribed size. Additional copies of the above-mentioned day-book-sheets are made for the different departments of the stock-brokers oflice. A statement of each sale must be manifoldedon a set of short form-bearing slips, one of which forms oes to the customer, the remainder belng distributed among the various departments of the ofiice.
It is an'object of the present invention to provide means for rapidly and efiiciently preparing these two kinds of multiple statements and multiple da book-sheets in a typewrlting machine, similar to that enclosed in the Wernery & Smith Patent N 0. 1,132,055, dated March 16, 1915.
The invention includes a web of short state ment forms, u on which one line only is to be typed and en the typed forms torn off, and a condensed'aecord fan-fold web having day-book forms of greater width and lengt than the statement-forms, and which consists of several lies that are torn off from time to time. his condensed record is provided with a heading and other data. The short, narrow form consists of several plies and is also provided with a heading. The short form is so short that, after one line has been typed thereon and the form line-spaced together with the record-web, there would not be a sufiicient amount projecting above the knife to enable an o erator to grip the same and pull it forwar For this reason, the knife-handle is placed at a convenient position so that an operator can swing the knife down and then grip the form, displace the platen, and pull the form forward over the,
stationary record-form.
The record-web is first interleaved with carbons, and is then fed around the platen, and is positioned for its first line of typing. In this position, it is gripped by clamps provided for this purpose. The narrow web is then interleaved with carbons and is fed around the platen and by means of my invention may be collated to proper position on top of the record-web. After-having typed one line, the operator releases novelclamps for the record-web by means provided for this purpose, and then line-spaces the whole together, after which the clamps are again moved to clamp the record-web. The knife is then swung down to enable the operator to grip the top of the small web, the laten displaced, and the short web pulled orward to a tearing-off position determined by a gaging bar. For side gaging the small web during this forward movement, the gaging bar is provided with sideedge gages mounted thereon, which are adjustable for difierent web-widths. When the multiple-ply recordweb is fed forward, it is contrived to feed said web behind the side-edge gages and behind the gaging bar to rest upon the record papertable, which with said side-edge gages forms a web-course for the record-web. For this purpose, the gage-bar has a handle rigidl attached thereto, so that, by operating this andle, the bar will be rotated and will swing the side edge gages up, thereb permitting the record-web to be entered un er the gages. To assist in keeping the record-sheet close against the pa r-table at its middle portion, the gage-bar a carries a finger which acts similarl to the two gages on the side, that is, said to guide the record-web over the paper-table. The clamps are individually provided with spring-members so that each clamp will exert pressure on the multiple-ply recordweb independently of the other. The clamps grip the record-web at its side margins, and
the individual pressure of each clamp en-' drawn a short distance rom the aper-table against which they clamp said we s, and said clamp-controllin means are arranged accordingly. It is rth'er contrived, according to the present invention, to withdraw the clamps farther than their normal web-releasing positions in order to be able to freely manipulate said web, and this without dis-.
turbing said clamp engaging and disengaging means so' that, irrespective of whether said means are conditioned to release or engage said clamps said means will maintain said condition w on the clamps are moved beyond their normal ineffective positionsto tear ofi or adjust the record-web so that after such manipulation of the record-web the clamps will reassume, as before, either their web-releasing or web-engaging condition. The clamps may be moved up a short distance by a handle prior to line-spacing, but when it is desired to tear 0E the record-web these clamps are swung up a sufiicient distance to enable an operator to pull the web forward and tear it ofi.
The uppergroup of blades holds carbons interleaved between lies of a multiple-ply record-web, each ply bearing a succession of day-book-forms, and the web-plies extending out at each side beyond thesideedges of the interleaved carbons to form margins which the clamps may grip and still leave said carbons free to be retracted. The record-web also extends beyond each side of the statement-web which is also interleaved with carbons held by the lower group of blades. In loading the machine with the two multipleply webs, the leading edges of the carbonsheets of both webs are evened to within a short distance of the cut-off knife, the platen having been raised to its usual loading position and said knife being below the printin line. The platen is then lowered, and bot webs with their leading edges about even are ger co-operates with said side gages.

The webclamping means of the present invention are an improvement over those shown in the patent to Alfred G. F. Kurowski, No. 1,642,248. After making the clamps effective against the side margins of the record-web and raising'the platen again, the carbons for both webs are stripped, the leading set of statement-forms being at the same time ripped by the operator and advanced to. the a ores'aid gage-bar. Said statement-forms maybe then cut off and wasted, which leaves thefirst line of writing of the next set of forms at the printing line, both webs nowjbeing in position for the first typing operation which may be begun after lowering the platen and releasin the clamps. After tfyping the two sets 0 superposed state'mentorms and daybook-forms and line-spacing both forms, the clamps are lowered again to effective position, and, because of being laterally disposed for gripping the side edges of thel recordweb-plies, so as to clear the narrower interleaved carbon-sheets of the record-web, the latter may be stripped rearwardly by the same movement of the carbon-carrier'which strips the carbons from the typed set of statement-forms, the latter set of typed statementforms being at the same time drawn forward, gaged, and then cut oil when the platen is lowered. As far as the day-book-form alone is concerned,'it is of course not necessary to retract the carbons interleaved therewith every time the carbons for the statement-form are retracted. It is, however, no disadvantage to do so. On the contrary, to simultaneously retract the carbons for both forms makes itv possible to employ only one carbon-carrier, and this constitutes an important feature of the invention, conducing to simplicity of the organization. Lateral guides are provided for the statement-web, and include flanged bar-members which may be mounted on the aforesaid cut-oif-ga e cross-shaft above the delivery side of t e platen in such way as to be normally disposed substantially parallel to the paper-table just above the record-web. Means are provided for swinging the statement-web lateral guides upwardly so as to permit a set of typed daybook-sheet-forms tobe drawn forward and severed. Said statement-web lateral guides and paper-table thus form a web-course for the record-web.
To cut ofl a condensed record day-bookform after typing the last line thereon, it and the overlying statement-form are rolled forward until the usual perforated dividing line at the bottom of the day-book-form aligns of both webs retracted, after which the platen is lowered." The lateral statement-webguides are now swung up and the clamps swung forward and the typed day-'book-form may now be conveniently pulled forward and severed along theweakened perforated line at the knife without injury to the statementform. Both webs are now rolled u ward to. bring the leading edge of the next diiy-bookform under the clamps and its first line of writing at the printing line. The clamps may now be lowered, the platen raised, and. the typed statement-forms pulled forward, gaged, and then cut-ofl. when the platen is lowered again. The leading forms of both webs are now in position to have the next line of statement-data typed on them.
Since it is usual to type but one line on the small statement-form, only a short portion of each typed set of statement-forms, after the usual condensed record line-spacing, will project up from the cut-off knife, to be grasped by the operative and pulled ahead to the cut-off gage. It is a feature of the present invention to. provide conveniently positionedmeans for swinging the cut-off knife downwardly to ex ose more of the typed statement-form so t atit maybe' conveniently grasped by the o erative.-
It is another feature of t e present invention to provide means for swinging both of the record-web-gripping clamps forwardly as a unit a much greater distance than is rovided for in the above-noted patent to 'urowski, to enable the clamps to be moved out of the way of a typed record-web-form' so that it may be conveniently drawn forward and severed.
Another feature of the invention resides in the organization of certain elements, including the record-web-plies, the record-web-car-' bons, the record-web side-edge gages, and the side-edge clamps, so that the carbons may be stripped from the record-web without requiring any gripping of the record-web by the operatives hands.
Still another feature is the provision of clamping devices which will urge each of the two side-edge clamps against the platenindependently of the-other to assure positive gripping engagement of both clamps.

Instrumentahtie's, not shown, disposed adjacent the left end of the platen, may be employed for linespacing the'latter forwardly. The platen may be rotated forwardly an rearwardly by means of finger-Wheels 16, only one of which is shown adjacent'the rightend of the platen, which. finger-wheel is, mounted on a stubshaft 17, which is journaled in the adjacent side of the carriage-frame and carries a gear 18 arranged to mesh with a wider idle gear 19, the latter being mounted on the carriage for meshing with a gear 20 fast on the end hon-sheets free to be stripped upon displac-- extendin of the platen-shaft 12. A rear paper-table 21 has a forwardly-extending apron 22 arranged with cut-outs through which feedrolls 23 may protrude to engage against the lower side of the platen 11. A rearwardlytrack 24 is supported at its forward en by a bracket 24 fastened to the carriage, and is supported at its rear end on instrumentalities, not shown, for movement laterally with said carriage. The parts described herein'be'l'ore may be substantially the same as those disclosed in the, patent to William F. Helmond, No. 1,572,139, dated Februar 9,1926.
A car on-carrier 25, having a forwardly-' extending handle 26, is mounted in a usual way for running on the track 24, and is arranged with a lower forward group 27 and an upper rear group 28 of carbon-holding blades 29. The blades in each group are mounted in, the usual stepped relation to each other, and, for a purpose to presently appear, the lowest blade of'the upper group 28 isspaced a considerably greater distance above the upper blade ofthe lowest group 27 than the vertical distance between blades in the same group.
Some stock exchanges require of each stock-broker member a daily condensed record, on sheets of a prescribed size, of certain. customer-statements relatingto sales ofstock. Each of such statements usually consists of one line of data manifolded on a set of small statement-forms. Each stock-brokers ofiice usuallyrequires one or more carbon-copies of each of the condensed record-sheets, sometimes called day-book-sheets, iurnished by the oflice to the stock exchange. To perform this work expeditiously in a typewriting machine embodying the present invention, a multiple-ply record-web 30 may have plies as wide as the above-noted day-book-sheets and may be interleaved with carbon-sheets 31 held by the upper group 28 of the blades 29. The carbon-sheets 31 are narrower than the plies of the record-web 30 and each side edge of a carbon-sheet will be spaced inwardly a certain amount from the 'side edges of the plies of the record-web (Figure "1), as will appear more particularly hereinafter. The record-web-plies may be divided by usual transverse creased or perforated lines 32 into sets of day-book or record forms 33 as long as said day-book-sheets. Each record-section or form 33 may have a suitably printed block heading 34. Each statement will preferably be manifolded on a set of superposed fan folded printed forms 35 adjacent the top edge thereof (Figure 10), which forms may be joined, end to end, to a succession of like forms andconstitute a multiple-ply fan-fold I statement-web 36.
Carbons 37, held by the lower group 27 of blades 29, may be interleaved between the plies of the statement-web 36. Both the web mamas 30 and the web 36 may be passed forwardly under the platen while the latter is displaced into the Figure 4 position, and the carbons 31 may be evened with the carbons 37 in a well-known way. The leading end of the first form 33 of the record-web 30 will be advanced far enough to, be gripped at each side ed e by a clamp 40 against a usual paper-table 41 at the delivery side of the platen which will dispose'the first line of writing of the form at the printing line. Each of the clamps 40 may include an arm 42 pivoted forwardl from the platen and having an inreaching tab 43 arranged with friction pads 44, and may be similar to clamps disclosed in the patent to Alfred G. F. Kurowski, No. 1,642,248, dated September 13, 1927. The clamps disclosed insaid patent, however, are fastened to a lateral rock-shaft and can only be manipulated by rotating said shaft. In
the present invention, each clamp '40 has a hub 45 loosely mounted upon a shaft 46, which is journaled in the forward ends of integral forwardly-extending bracket-members 47 of side plates 48 of the platen-displacing frame 13. A coiled wire-spring .50 is wound around each hub 45 and has one end fastened to a screw 51 in a. collar 52, the latter being fastened on the shaft 46'for lateral adjustment by the screw '51. The other end of each spring extends rearwardly alongside the adjacent arm 42 and has a lateral hook-portion 53 engaging in a. hole 54 in the arm. Each spring 50 is arranged with an initial tension so that it alwa 5 tends to urge its associated arm 42 clockwise against the paper-table 41.
Means are provided for urging the shaft 46 in a clockwise direction, includi an upwardly-extendin arm 55 fast on t 9 right end of the'sha and a tensile spring 56 having one end fastened to the upper end of said arm and the other end to he adjacent side plate 48. Said urging-means also include a' cam-plate 57 fast on the left end of the shaft 46, a pin 59 in said cam-plate, and a'spring 58 having one end: fastened to :he pin '59 and the other end to a pin 60 in the adjacent side plate 48. The cam-plate 57 extends rearwardly and upwardly and has a. tooth 61 which is positioned toenga e against a forwardly-protecting heel-1i e member 62 on the lower portion of an upwardly-extending lever-Handle 63, which is pivo ed below the heel-member 62 and has a finger-piece 65 at its upper free end. The construction of the arm 55, the cain' plate 57 and the handle 63 may be the same as is disclosed in the above-noted patent to Kurowski.
I. will be seen from an inspection of Fi'gdirection. Both parts are then latched against return movement by the tooth 61 engaging the heel-member 62. To make this movement of the cam-plate effective to raise the latter counterclockwise upon a like movement of the handle 63.
, To enable the tabs 43 to be swung a much greater distance forwardly from 'rheir effective work-sheet gripping positions than can be done by the handle 63, for a urpose to appear hereinafter, a laterallyisposed rod 69 is loosely fastened between the arms 42 by shoulder-screws 70 which pass through over-size holes 70 in the arms to be threaded into the ends of the rod and may be easily pulled forwardly against the tension of the springs 50 by an operatives finger, as illustrated. in Figure 6. To permit the clamps 40 to be adjusted rela'ively to each other for usewith record-webs of different widths, the rod 69 is made in two sections 71 and 72 which are 'connected by a sleeve 73, which engages around the inner end portions of each section 71 and 72 and is adjustably fastened hereon by set-screws 74.
It will be noted that the above-described arrangement of the clamps 40 and the clampoperating mechanism is effective to urge each c amp against the paper-table independently of the other, thereby assuring a positive grip of a work-piece by each of the clamps regardless of small manufac uring variations. It will he further noted that the two independently spring urged clamps are movable to each of their ineffective positions as a unit.
Employment of he rod 69 permits the tabs 43 to be swung forward out of the way of the record-web 30. when it is desired to pull the latter forward and sever a typed record-form 33 at a knife 75. This knife may include a laterally-disposed blade 76 mean ed ontwo arms 77, each journale'd on the platen-shaft 12 at each end of the platen, and having an enlarged portion arranged with a cam-slot 78 in which may engage a pin 79 fast in the lower end of an arm 80, which is fastened on a rock-shaft 81 journaled in the side pla es 48 of the platen-displacing frame 13. An upwardly-extending crank-M11182 is fastened on the rock-shaft a1 adjacent the left end of the platen and terminates ina fingerpiece 83. A spring 94, fastened to each of he arms 80, normally holds the pins 79 in the forward ends of the slpts 78, which arrangement is eifective for holding the blade 76 in its effective cuttingoff position. By pressing the finger-piece 83 forwardly,the blade 76 is swung counterclockwise. as is fully set forth in Patent" No. 1,281.087, granted to me October 8, 1918, which patent discloses the construction of a knife substantially like the knife described above, except that the knife-swinging handle is mounted at the right end of the platen. instead of the left, as is done in the present invention for an advantage to appear hereinafter.
The platen 11 is locked down in its typin position by upright locking arms 87, each 0 which is fastened on a rock-shaft 88. A notch 89 is provided in the forward edge of each of the locking arms 87 and engages about a stud 90 fast in the adjacent side plate 48. The lower edge of the notch 89 is arranged to act as a cam, and is effective to raise the platen a. small amount when the shaft 88 is rocked rearwardly by means of a usual finger-piece 91 on an upward handle-extension 92 on the left-hand locking arm 87. The construction of the locking arms 87 and the notch 89 may be the same as is disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial N 0. 202.631, filed June 30, 1927 (now Patent No. 1,749,550, dated March 4, 1930).
The sales data is typed on astatementform 35 in columns 95 and is required to be copied accurately in columns 96 of a daybook-form. To thisend, adjustable lateral guides 97 and 98 for the statement-web and record-web. respectively. may be mounted at the rear of the bracket 24 and be of the same construction as the lateral web-guides disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 108.451. filed Mav 12. 1926 (now Patent No. 1,690.844. dated November 6. 1928). To co-operate with the guides 98, there is provided a lateral guide which includes arrangleplate 99 adjustably mounted on the papertable 41 by means of a lengthwise laterallydisposed slot 100 in a base-portion 99 of the angle-plate and two set-screws 101. To cooperate with the guides 97. lateral guiding means for the statement-web are provided at the delivery side of the platen and include two plates 102 disposed parallel to the papertable 41 a short distance above it. each plate having an upturned guide-flange 103 to come at each side of the statement-web. To provide for lateral adjustment of the guideflanges 103. the upper ends of the plates 102 mav be bent or curled closely around a laterally-disposed rock-shaft 104 (Figure 8) having a longitudinal groove 104" into which groove ridge-like elements 102 on the curled ends of the plates 102 may be pressed by spring-action of the curled ends. The shaft is supported on-the upper ends of two upwardly-extending bars 105, fastened at the rear side of the paper-table 41 by screws 106 passing through lengthwise slots 107 in the plates and engaging intapped holes in a usual angle-plate 108 fastened between the side plates 48. Record-data regarding each sale, which it is not desired to have appear on the statement-forms 35. may be typed in a column 96 on the day-book-forms 33 beyond the side edge of the statement-form.
The plates 102 and their flanges 103 not only guide the statement-web laterally, but also serve to deflect the underlying recordweb rearwardly in close contact with the paper-table 41. To assure better deflection of the record-web, an intermediate deflectorplate 109 is mounted on the rock-shaft 104 between the plates 102 in the same manner as the last-named plates. The upper edge of the shaft 104 (Figure 4) is employed as a cut-off gage for'the statement-web-forms. To deflect the leading edge of the statement-form past the body 'of the rock-shaft 104 as the form is pulled forward to cut-off position, an
integral deflector-finger-IOQ may be formed out of the curved rim-port on of the deflectorplate 109, as illustrated in Figure 8.
For a purpose to presently appear. it is desirable to swing the plates 102 and 109 upwardly. To this end. each end of the shaft 104 is journaled in a U-shaped bracket 111 fastened on the upper end of the adjacent bar 105, and a crank-arm 112 is fastened to the right end of the shaft 104. Each bracket 111 forms part of a detent-device of a construction well-known in the typewriter art. This device includes a roller 113 pressed against the shaft by a leaf-spring 114. A
short lengthwise groove 115 is provided in each end of the shaft 104 and is positioned so that, when the plates 102 and the plate 109 are disposed parallel to the paper-table 41. the rollers 113 engage in the grooves 115 and hold the plates in their normal effective positions.
The operation of the typewriting machine embodying the present invention for pre-' paring the above-noted multiple statementslips and a multiple condensed record thereof may be as follows: Carbon-sheets 31 for each web may be fastened to the proper blades 29 so that the free ends of all the carbons will be evened when the blades are mounted on usual stepped blocks 116 and the arbons interleaved between the plies of the webs and ing line. The leading edge of the statementweb 36 may be gripped by the operators one hand and the carbon-carrier 25 moved rear wardly by the other hand'far enough to bring the leadingends of the carbons about one-half an inch to the rear of the cutting edge of the knife, and a stop-pin 117 will be placed on the track 24 behind the carbon-carrier so as to arrest its rearward movement at that point thereafter, and thus gage the leading edges of the carbons to fall short of said knife. While the carbon-carrier is held against the pin 117, the leading end of the first set of statement-forms will now be pulled ahead to the cutting-off gage, the platen restored, and the first set of forms cut off and wasted. It will be understood that instead of merely holding the statement-web 36 while the carbon-carrier 25 is shifted backwardly, said statement-web 36 may, concomitantly with the rearward shift of said carbon-carrier, be advanced to said cutting-off gage. The sideedge clamps 40 are now raised and latched in their ineffective position by operation of the finger-piece 65, leaving the first lines of writing on the leading statement-form and the leading day-book-form at the printing line, both webs being held closely against the platen at the printing line by usual sheet-pressers or guards (not shown).
The usual one line of data may now be typed on the original statement-form and carbon-copied on the underlying forms of both webs, after which both forms are linespaced ahead an amount which will provide the desired condensed record-spacing on the day-book-forms. The side-edge clamps are lowered to effective position by pressing rearwardly on the finger-piece 65 preparatory to stripping the carbon from the typed statement-form. Since only one line is usually typed on a small statement-form 35, the
.subsequent condensed-record line-spacing of the form is usually insufficient to advance the leading edge of the typed statement-form far enough above the sharp cutting edge of the knife-blade 76 to afford a convenient and secure grip on the form by the operatives fin gers. It is desirable, therefore, for the-operative to swing the knife-blade down by fiessing the finger-piece 83 forward with one ger of her left hand, which can be done while another finger of the same hand is used to unlatch and slightlyraise the platen 11 by ressing rearwardly on the finger-piece 91. be operative is thus enabled to rasp the top 'of the typed form with her rig t hand and pull both the web-plies and carbons slightly ahead to secure her grasp. Then, with her left hand, the operative will swing the platen vupward to its displaced position, push the carbon-carrier to the rear, and draw the leading edges of the typed set of'statement-forms to the cutting-off gage with her right hand. Because of the clamps 40 being positioned for gripping the side edges of the recordweb-plies far enough outwardly from the side edges of the carbon-sheets interleaved between the plies, the record-web carbon-sheets may be stripped rearwardly' by the same operation that strips the carbon-sheets of the outer statement-web even though two or more linesbe typed on a statement-form and the leading edges of the interleaved carbons advanced considerably beyond the clamps. After lowering the platen, the typed statement-form may be out 01f, the side-edge clamps released, and the succeeding form typed and cut off in the same manner as described above.
When the last line of data has been typed on a set of day-book-forms of the recordweb, the latter and the statement-form-web are rolled forwardly until the erforated dividing line at the bottom of t e typed daybook-form'is aligned with the cutting edge of the blade 76. The typed statement-form may be disregarded for a time until the typed day-book-f'orm is" severed. The clamps 40 are lowered to effective position, the platen displaced, and the carbonsof both webs retracted below the blade 76, after which the platen is lowered. The deflector-plates 102, 109 are now swung up and the clamps 40 swung forward as a unit to the Figure 6 position, and the typed set of day-book-forms' may now be conveniently pulled forward and severed along the weakened perforated lines at the position of the'knife, which severing operation can be performed 'withoutinjury to the statement-form interposed between the day-book-form and the knife. The deflectorplates 102, 109 may now-be. swung down vto normal position, and the clamps 40 lowered to their ineffective positions, and both webs rolled up sufliciently to bring the leading edge of' the next day-book-form under the clamps and thefirst line of writing of the form at the printing line. The clamps may now be lowered to effective position, the platen raised, the carbons stripped, the typed statement-form pulled forward, gaged and cut off, and the platen is lowered. The leading forms of both webs are now in position for being typed with the next line of statement-data.
A typed day-book-form may also be severed by a different method from that de scribed above. After writing the last line on the day-book-form, both the latter and the statement-form are rolled up together until the top edge of the next day-book-for'm is under the line of the forward sides of the pads 44. The clampsare lowered to effective position, the platen raised, the carbons stripped, and the typed set of statementforms gaged to cut-off position, after which the platen may be lowered and thestatementforms'cut oil by 'the'knife. The deflectorplates 102, 109 may nowbe swung upwardly and the typed day-booleform torn off along the perforated line at the clamps. The
clamps may now be raised and both webs are left in position for the next typing operation.
Worn portions of the carbon-sheets used with the statement and record webs may be conveniently severed in the following manner. After typing the last line on the leadins: day-book-form, the stop-pin 117 will'he advanced a distance canal to the depth of the carbon-sheets that it is desired to tear off. Both webs are next rolled forward to nosition the perforated line at the bottom of the t-vped dav-book-form under the line of the forward sid s of the pads 44. The clamps are now lowered. the platen raised. and the car- 'hon-carrie moved rearwardlv to wit in about one-half inch of the stop-pin 117. some cases. where t e ston-nin 117 has been advanced onlv a short distance. the worn portions .of the reco d-web-carbon sheets will not exten above the perforated line at the bottom of the leading dav-hook-form nnon carrying ut the above-noted operations. and. therefore. will not he severed with the typed set of da -hook-form The worn carbon-portions will. however. be advanced ahovethe printing field and will be in position to he suhsequentlv severed when the stoppin 117 is advanced again for severing typed portions of the statement-web-carbons. After cutting off the day-book--form, the clamps may be lowered-to their ineffective positions and the deflector-plates swung downwardly to normal position and both webs may be rolled forward sufliciently to bring the leading edge of the next day-book-form in posi-' tion to be gripped by the clamps 40, which will bring thetop of the next statement-form at the knife, and the first lines of writing of the statement-form and day-book-form will be disposed at the printing line ready for the next typing operation. l
It can readily be seen by those skilled in the art that the statement-webs and recordwebs' may be manipulated in a different manner from the present disclosure without departing from the, scope of my invention.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The day-book fan-fold web-forms together with the statement fan-fold web-slips are fed from the rear of the machine over a single carbon-carrier having carbons mounted thereon and interleaved between both sets of webs. The webs togetherwith the carbons are inserted in the machine around the platen and fed up far enough to permit clamps at the front of the machine to grip the side edges of the day-book-web, which simulta neously positions this web for the first line of typing. The clamps are then moved to effective position to hold the day-bookweb stationary while the platen is displaced and the statement-web pulled up to an aligning gage. The carbons are then retracted, and, due to the carbons not extending out to the edges of the day-book-web, the clamps do not grip them and allow them to slip through the day-book-forms while the latter are held-stationary. The platen is then lowered to its normal position and the gaged statement-webis torn off and wasted. The clamps are then released .and the first line is ped, after which the webs are line-spaced.
e operator is now ready to stripthe first set of typed statement-slips while the. daybook-web remains stationarg. However, the statement-slips have only eenline-spaced once'and the distance that they were fed above the cutting-off knife is not sufiicient to enable the operator to obtain a good grip to E111 them forward. To accomplish this, the
ife is displaced by means of a handle mounted near the day-book clamp-handle and also near'the swingable platen-frame locking lever-liandle, so that the operator may now, with one hand, move the knife down, move the clamp to hold the recordweb stationary, and release the platen-displacing, locking lever, while the other hand rips the statement-web and lifts. the platenframe to displace the platen. The statementweb is then pulled up to the gage and the carbon-carrier retracted to strip the carbons from both webs. The platen is now lowered to its normal osition and the statement-web severed, the 0 amps released, and the operator is ready for ty ing the nextline.-
For tearing o the day-book fan-fold forms, the operationis as follows:
After having typed a statement-form together with the last line on the day-bookform, the formsare fed up by means of rotating the laten until the perforated lines, on the day'- k-form align with the top edge of the severing knife (nothing being 'done with the statement-form until after the typedday-book-forms are severed and the new forms positioned). The clamps are now moved to efl'ective position, the platen is displaced and the carbons retracted, after which the platenis lowered to its normal position, and the lateral statement-gages swung up to permit the day-book-forms to be pulled out, and then the clamps are swung forward, to the position of Figure 6, to enable the forms to be severed along the perforated line against an edge of the statement-forms which rest on the top edge of the knife. The webs are then fed up by rotation of the platen until the leading edge of the day-book-web comes underneath the clamps,

. with carbon-sheets, said record-web carbons being narrower than said record-web and wider than said statement-web, of means for stripping said carbon-sheets from typed sections of both webs at one operation, said means including, in combination, a single carbon-carrier having blades in spaced-apart oups, said statement-web carbon-sheets asten'ed to one group and said record-web carbon-sheets fastened to the other group of blades, said latter carbon-sheets being narrower than said record-web so that their side edges are spaced inwardly from the side edges of said record-web, a separate table for each web at the delivery side of the platen, separate lateral guides for each of said webs upon each table, and clamps arranged for clamping said record-web against one table above said platen and away-from the side edges of the record-web carbon-sheets, whereby said carbons are free to be stripped from the clamped record-web with the carbons of said statement-Web upon displacing the platen and moving said carbon-carrier rearwardly while said statement-web is grasped by the hand.
10. in a typewriting machine of the class described, the combination with a platendisplacin frame, a platen in said frame around w ich a work-web may be fed, and a paper-table at the delivery side of said platen, of clamp-arms for said work-web, means on whichsaid clamp-arms are fulcrumed independently of one another to swing from and toward said frame and whereby said clamp-arms are spaced to engage the sides of said Work-Web, means effective for urging each of said clamps against said table independently of the other, and connecting devices between said clamps for moving them-to and from their effective positions as a unit.
11. In a continuous billing front-strike typewriting machine having aplaten around which may be fed a multiple-ply statementweb and a wider multiple-ply record-web which projects out on both sides from said statement-web, and a cutting-off knife for said webs at the fron-tpf said platen, the combination with a paper-table at the deiivery side of said platen, of a rock-shaft supported above and crosswise of said table to be effective for gaging said statement-web to cutting-oil position, deflector-plates for said recordweb having their upper ends attached issues to said rock-shaft for lateral adjustment therealong, without turning on said shaft, said deflector-plates extending downwardly parallel to said table and closely adjacent thereto, integral upturned guide-flanges on said deflector-plates arranged to engage the side edges of said statement-web, and a handle on said rock-shaft to rotate the latter for swinging said deflector-plates upwardly out of the way of said record-web to permit typed sections of said record-web to be drawn forward and severed by said knife.
12. In a continuous-billing typewriting machine having a platen around which a record-web which is divided into relatively long form-sections may be fed, and a cutting-oil knife, thecombination with a paper-table at the delivery side of said platen, of plates for deflecting a typed section of said web rearwardly over said table, said plates also effective to support an overlying statement-web clear of said record-web, a rock-shaft supported above and crosswise of said table and having said plates fastened thereto so as to be disposed parallel to said table, and a handle for revolving said shaft to swing said plates upwardly to permit said record-web to be drawn forward and cut ofi by said knife. In a web-manifolding typewriting'machine having a platen-displacing frame, a platen around which a Work-web may be fed and a cutting-ofi knife for said web disposed forwardly from said platen, the combination with a paper-table mounted on said frame at the delivery side of said platen, of two springurged clamp-arms pivotally supported on said frame for gripping the side edges of said work-web against said table, and means connecting said clamp-arms at points spaced from their pivots for swinging said clamparms forwardly as a unit a sufficient distance out of the way of said work-web to permit a typed section thereof to be conveniently drawn forward and severed across said knife, said connecting means engaging said clamparms loosely so that each clamp-arm may grip independently of the other.

In a web-manifolding typewriting machine having a platen-dis lacing frame, a platen around which a wor r-web ma be fed and a cutting-off knife for said web isposed forwardly of said platen, the combination with a paper-table at the delivery side of said platen, of a web-clamping device includin a rock-shaft mounted in said frame forwardly from said platen, clamp-arms loosely mounted on said rock shaft for gripping said work-web against said table, means for rotating said shaft between two positions and holding it in either position, and whereby in one position said rock-shaft holds said clamp-arms clear of said table and in the other position permits said clamp-arms to ip, mechanism efiective for swinging said 0 amps as a imit around said shaft away from said table without disturbing the position of said shaft, and means effective for urging each of said. clamps against said table independently of the other.
16. In a web-manifolding typewriting machine having a platen-displacing frame, a platen around which a work-web may be fe'd-\ and a cutting-off'knife for said web disposed forwardly of said platen, the combination with a paper-table at the delivery side of said platen, of a web-clamping device-including a lateral rock-shaft mounted in said frame forwardly from saidplaten, a cam bearing arm faston said shaft,a lever arm pivoted on said frame and cooperating with a cam on said first-named arm for rotatin said shaft be tween two positions and holding said shaft in either position, clamp-arms loosel mounted on said rock-shaft for gripping sai work-web against said table, arms on said shaft whereby the latter in swinging between said two positions swings said clamps as a unit with said shaft away from said table to ineffective positions, means effective for urging each of said clamp-arms against said table inde endently of the other, and instrumentalities ror swinging both of said clamp-arms forwardly, as a uni t, from either effective or inefi'ec'tive position for cutting ofi' said web on said knife.
17. In a web-manifolding typewriting machine having a platen-dis lacing frame,-a
platen around which a wor -web ma. be fed and a cuttingpfi knife for said web isposed forwardly "of said platen, the combination with a paper-table at the delivery'side of said platen, of aweb-clamping device including a lateral rock-shaft mounted in said frame forwardly from said plat-en, a cam-hearing arm fast on said shaft, a lever-arm pivoted on said frame and co-operating with acam on said first-named arm for rotating said shaft between two positions and holding said shaft in either position, clamp-arms loosely arms will permit each clamp-arm to be urged independently of the other against the table.
18. In a web-manifolding, carbon-stripping typewriting machine having a, platen around which a work-web interleaved with carbons may be passed and a paper-table at the delivery side of said platen, in combination a set of two clamps, each mounted for gripping the side edge of said work-web against said table, two spring devices, each arranged with initial tension to urge one of said clamps towards said table, spring operated means edective for maintaining the initial tension of said spring devices and devices for moving said clamps to inefiectivc positions as a unit.
19. In a web-manifolding, carhGnstx-ipping typewriting machine having a platen around which a work-web interleaved with carbons may be passed and a cutting-oil knife for said carbons at'the delivery side of said. platen, the combination of a paper-table at the delivery side of said platen, two clamparms individually spring-pressed and individually pivoted forwardly from said platen for gripping the side edges of said work-web against said table, manual means effective for swinging and locking said clamp-arms, as a unit, in ineflective positions adjacent said paper-table, means for manually swinging both clamp-arms together from said table a greater distance than to the clam -arm-lockmg position, to permit the type section of said work-web to be conveniently severed across said knife, and means for restoring said clamp-arms after either manual operation, to bear against said paper-table.

In a continuous billing t pewriting machine havinga platen around wliich superposed multiple- 1y work-webs may be passed, and a cutting-o knife for said webs, the combination with a gaging device for the outer web including a cross-shaft supported above said knife to serve as a cutting-off gage for 'said outer web, and side-edge guides for said outer web,consistingof two plates which have their upper ends fastened to-said shaft, and
which extend downwardly therefrom toward said platen and have upwardly-extending integral flanges for engaging the side edges of sald outer web, of a pa r-table spaced from said plates to form a we -course for the inner a for supportin above said tab e clear of the wider web, said means including a cross-shaft supported above said aperetable, and plates on said shaft exten ing downwardly parallel with said table, said plates beingswingable upwardly to be removed from the path of t e wider work-web when the latter is drawn forward to be severed by said knife.

The device described in claim 22, characterized by means for fastening said plates on said cross-shaft for lateral adjustment therealong, said means including a lengthwise oove in said cross-shaft, curled por- 80 tions aving initial'spring tension arranged on'said plates for gripping said cross-shaft b spring-action, and in reaching ridge-like efements in said curled portions arran ed for interlocking with said groove, and held 85 therein by said spring tension.
24. In a 't pewriting machine having a platen aroun which a work-web may be fed, in combination, a paper-table at the delivery side of said platen, a rock-shaft disposed forwardly and lengthwise of said platen, two clamp-arms pivoted loosely on said shaft and extendin rearwardly therefrom to grip said work-weg against said paper-table, a spring connection between said rock-shaft and each of said clamp-arms effective for urging the latter towards said table, a connection between said rock-shaft and each of said arms eil'ective, by the rotation of said shaft, for moving said clamp-arms away from said table to ineffective positions, and means, including a finger-piece, for rotating said shaft between two positions and holding it in either position, so that in one position said clamparms bear on said table, and in the other position are withdrawn from said table, said means arranged to operate by the mere shiftof said finger-piece.

In a typew'riting machine having a platen around which a work-web may be fed, in combination, a paper-table at the'delivery side of said platen, a rock-shaft dis osed forwardly and lengthwise of said p aten, two clamp-arms pivoted loosely on said shaft and extending rearwardly therefrom to grip said work-web against said paper-table, spring devices for urging sai'd'shaft to rotate in a direction to swing said clamp-arms toward said table, a s ring connection between said rock-shaft an each of said clam -arms efiective for urging the latter towar s said table, a connection between said rock-shaft and each of said clamp-arms, said connection including two arms fastened on said rock-shaft and designed .to engage said clam -arms for withdrawing the latter from sai table by rotating said shaft to a' clamp-withdrawing position, said shaft-arms beingfurther arranged torecede from said clamp-arms, by rotating said shaft oppositely to a clamp-engaging position in which said spring-connection side edges of said work-web against said pa-.
per-table, a spring-pressed arm fast to said shaft for urging said shaft to rotate in a direction to swing said clamp-arms toward said table, two springs coiled around said shaft, one adjacent each of said clamp-arms for connecting the latter and said rock-shaft, said coiled springs urging said clamp-arms toward said table, a connection between said rock-shaft and each of said clamp-arms effective, by the rotation of said shaft, for moving said clamp-arms from said table, a camming and latching member opposing said springpressed arm and co-operating therewith to rotate said shaft between two positions in which respectively .said clamp-arms bear upon, and are withdrawn from, said table, and to hold said shaft in either osition, and means for swinging both of said clamp-arms together beyond their ineffective position as determined by said camming and .latching member against the tension of said coil springs.

In a typewriting machine havin a platen around which a work-web may be f ed, in combination, a paper-table at the delivery side of said laten, a' rock-shaft disposed forwardly and lengthwise of said platen, two clamp-arms pivoted loose] on said shaft and extending rearwardly t erefrom to grip said work-web against said paper-table, a spring-pressed arm connected to said shaft for urging said shaft to rotate in a direction to swing said clamp-arms toward said table,
a spring connection between said rock-shaft and each of said clamp-arms effective for urging the latter towards said table, a con-v necting memberbetween said clamp-arms for clamp-arms grip, and in the other position are withdrawn to ineffective positions.

In a dewce of the class described, in combination, a dlsplaceable frame having a platen around which a multiple-ply work-- web interleaved with carbons may be fed, means for holding carbons narrower than said web so that the side edges of the plies of'said work-web are carbonless, a paper-' table secured to said frame and disposed at the delivery side of said platen and displaceable therewith, two clamps pivotally mounted upon said frame and adjustable for different web-widths and disposed forwardly of said paperrtable, each clamp effective for clamping the carbonless side edge of said work-web against said table, means for stripping said interleaved carbons from the web and between the clamps, said'clamps having means to exert clamping pressure independently of one another, and means for simultaneously engaging or disengaging both clamps from the edges ,of the web.

In a deviceoftheclassdescribed having a displacing frame; having a platen around which a record-web and a multiple-ply state ment-web interleaved with carbons and hearing a succession of sets of forms may be fed. and a web-delivering table the combination of a web-course, supported on said frame, above said table, atgthe delivery side ofsaid platen,
for conducting carbonless typed web-forms away from said platen. a knife'carried by said frame and operable to sever typed forms from either web. and a gage for said statement-web including a bar supported between two upwardly-extending arms secured to said frame for up-and-down adjustments for said said platen and feeding therearoundtwo superposed multiple-ply work-webs, each hearing a succession of forms, a pap er-table adjacent the delivery side of said platen, a c
web-collating structure including a plurality of web-separating and web-guiding plates over said table and forming therewith a chute for the multiple-ply web that is nearest to said platen, and means supporting said structure and manually rockable for displacing said plurality of plates to thereby uncover said chute and render the multiple-ply web nearest to said platen accessible for manipulation.

In a multiple-ply-web-manifolding typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of means for presenting to said platen and feeding therearound two superposed multiple-ply work-webs, each hear ing a succession of forms, a paper-table ad] acent the delivery side of saidplaten, a webcollating structure including a plurality of web-se arating and web-guiding plates over said table and forming therewith a chute for the multiple-ply web that is nearest to said platen, and means supporting said structure and manually rockable for displacing said web-collating structure to thereby uncover said chute and render the multiple-ply web nearest to said platen accessible for manipulation, said web-collating structure" having side-edge collating guides for the super- .-posed web and being adjustable to the width of said superposed web.
