Be it known that I, Jnssn A. B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing in Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collating devices for typewriting machines, and is herein illustrated as applied to a continuous billing typewriting machine, one form of which. is shown in the patent to VVernery and Smith, No. 1,132,055, dated March 16, 1915.
In mercantile establishments, such, for example, as mail order houses having a number of different departments for ditl'erent classes of goods, it is custoi'nary, upon receipt of an order, to prepare a bill and one or more duplicates thereof, and, in addition, to prepare a separate order or memoranduni for each department afl'ected. Inniy (JO- PQIlCllDQ applicatiom serial No. 586,06et, filed September 5, 1922, disclosure is made oi? a web of bill -forms and a sectional ordersheetsboth designed for work of the class referred to, and also of a machine in which the web and sheet referred to may be collat-ed, so that each item may be entered at a single operation on the web of bill forms, and on the sectional order-sheet, the latter being shifted relatively to the web between successive typing operations. Asdisclosed in said co-pending application, the original entry is made on the sectional order-sheet, and the entries on the various plies of the web of bill forms are carbon copies. Itv is desirable for many reasons, however, to have the original entry on the outer ply on the web of bill forms.

A platen is fixed upon a platen-axle 11 journaled in arms 12 of a platen-dis placing frame 13 which also includes a plate 14 extending between said arms 12. The arms 12 are pivotally mounted upon a shaft 15 journaled at its ends in members 16 secured to the ends 17 of a plateirframe 13 forming part of a traveling carriage 19. Near each end of the platen-displacing frame 13 is a broad pinion 20 fixed on the shaft 15 and meshing with a gear 21 fixed on the adjacent end of the platen-shaft, and with a gear 22 fixed on the inner end of a shaft 23 journal-ed in the adjacent end 17 of the platen-frame and provided at its outer end with a finger-wheel 2 1-, The platen 10 may be turned by one of the fingerwheels 2-1, or by means of line-spacing mechanism including a lever 24 pivoted at 24 on the carriage and a slide 24 actuable by said lever 24a hen the platen is in its normalposition to cooperate with the front and rear feed-rolls 25 and 26, respectively, the platen-axle 11 is in alignment with the shafts 23. It will be seen that the connection between the finger-wheels and the platen will be maintained when the latter is swung upwardly and forwardly from its normal position.
iVhen the platen-displacing frame is in its normal position the rear ends of the arms 12 rest on a rock-shaft 27, journaled at its ends in the rear ends of the members 16. Fixed on said shaft adjacent the arms 12 of the platen-displacing frame are hooks 28 to engage pins 29 projecting inwardly from the adjacent arms 12, and thereby lock the platen-displacing frame in its normal position, the shaft 27 being normally urged to latching position by springs 30 adjacent the members 16. For releasing the platen-displacing frame provision is made of a fingerpiece 31 forming an extension of the left hand hook 28.
Provision is made of a rearward extension of the earriagein the form of a frame 32 comprising front and rear bars 33 and 3st connected by rods or bars 35, the frame 32 being supported at its forward end by brackets 36 fixed on a cross-bar 3'7 extending across the carriage 19 at the rear thereof. At its rear end the frame 32 is supported on a rail, not shown, in such a manner that it may travel back and forth with the carriage. The outer rods are provided at their tops with flat rails 35 on which a carbon-carrier 38 is supported for traveling movement by means of grooved wheels 39 secured to the carbon-carrier 38 and engaging the edges of said rails The carbon-carrier 38 comprises the usual stepped supports 40 on which may be mounted carbon-holders -11, and is provided with a foiwvardly-projecting handle 42 by which the carbon-carrier may be shifted rearwardlyu As shown in Figure 2, webs 413, which may be independent of each other, or may he plies of a fan-fold web, pass over a rod 41 on the rear end of the frame 32 and extend on opposite sides of the lower carbon-holder 11, so that a carbon-sheet- 45 extending forwardly from said holder will be interleaved therebetween. The guide-rod it, which is supported by arms 44 on the rear of the frame 32, is provided with the usual-side gages or guides d9, one of which is shown in Figure 1 as having an overhanging portion 50, and the guides 46 at the rear of the platen-frame are supported in the usual manner upon a rod 51 mounted in arms projecting rearwardly from the ends of the platen-frame. The webs 43 are guided with reference to the carbon-carrier 33 by means of guides or gages adjustably secured on tne rear ends of the supports 40 ly screws 5%, the shanks of which pass through slots in the side gages The niechanisn'i so far described is, in general, similar to that of fan-fold machines in general use.
The invention is illustrated in connection with webs 41-3 of bill-forms and sectional order-sheets 55, as indicated in Figure 1. Fora fuller disclosure ofthe webs 43 and the order-sheets 55, reference is made to said application, Serial No. 536,06i.
In carrying out the invention, the sectional order-sheet is thrust forward between the webs a3 and the platen 10, registration between the heading of the sectional order-sheet 55 and the heading of the hill to be typed being effected, while the bill-web is gaged preparatory to tearing off an already typed bill, by bringing a mark 56 on the l aek of the order-sheet 55 into proper relation with a rod 57 supported by the side gages or guides eiG for the web The rod 57, hesides serving as a registering gage, carries side or guides 58 for the order-sheet- As shown in Figure the guides 46 may be adjustably secured to the rod 51 by means of screws 59, and the guides 58 may be similarly secured on the rod 57 by means of screwsGO. The rod 57, while secured to the left-hand guide l by a screw 61. has a sliding connection with the right-hand guide 16, so as not to interfere with the adjustment of the guides To as ist in maintaining the order-sheet in arouer ali nment with the webs 43, two carbon-holders 41 extending from opposite sides of the carbon-carrier are provided with upright ends to serve as side gages or guides 62 for the order-sheet 55.
After typing the different lines of the address on the heading of the first bill and the first section of the order-sheet, the bill-web and the order-sheet are line-spaced by means of the platen to bring the first bill and the associated order-sheet into position for the first entry. After this entry has been made by means of types 63 and type-bars 64, the bill-web and order sheet are line-spaced, thereby bringing the bill into the proper position for typing the second entry thereon.
' The first entry made on'the bill has also been made on the first section 65 of the order-sheet 55. In order, however, to have the copy of the next entry appear in corresponding position on the second section 65 of the order-sheet 55, it is necessary to advance the order-sheet 55 to a greater extent.
To obtain the increased spacing of the items on the order-sheet 55, the platen is displaced to a slight extent, as shown in Figure 3, and the order-sheet 55 is advanced with reference to the webs 43. To this end, provision is made of a collating table 67, preferably formed in two sections 68 and secured adjustably to the plate 14 by means of the screws 69 passing through slots 7 in the two sections 68 to enable adjustment of the latter to different positions. The collating table (57 has a central portion substantially tangential to the platen and bounded .by upright walls or side gages 71 at the sides thereof forming a chute of the proper width to receive the order-sheet 55. The collating table ('37 also comprises tables or supports 72 parallel to the main flat portion of the collating table and extending outwardly from the upper edges of the walls 71, said supports 72 being provided with downweirdly-inclined forward portions 73, so as to guide the edges of the webs 43 upwardly to the tables 72 where they may be clamped by clamping members 74 when it is desired to detain the webs 43 during the forward shifting of an order-sheet 55. At the outer edges of said tables 72 are side gages 75 for the webs 43. Each of the clamping members 74 is fixed on a short shaft 76 journaled in the ends of a U-shaped bracket 77, the shaft 76 being provided, for convenience, with a finger-piece 7$.- Suitable means, such as springs 74, may be provided for holding the clamping members 74 either in their effective positions to press against the portions 72 of the collating table, or in their ineffective positions, said springs 74 being so arranged that they will be swung either to one side or the other of the axis of the shaft 76. so as to serve both of said purposes.
No shifting of the sectional order-sheets with reference to the first bill is necessary until the heading and first entry have been typed and the bill and order-sheet linespaced to position the bill for the second entry. At this time the edges of the forward ends of the bill webs'lie on the supports 72, and the clamping members 74 are swung into effective position. The platen-displacing frame may then be swung to the position shown in Figure 3, and the sectional ordersheet drawn forward until the division line between the heading and the first section is brought to a position of substantial alignment with a mark or gage 72 on the lefthand support 72. In positioning each section after the second, use is made of one of the lines of perforations 6G in connection with the gage 7 2. In order to use the mark or gage 72 in positioning, it may be neces sary to swing forwardly the bill-web or webs 43 to uncover the gage. The mark 72 may be located at any convenient place, or the top edge of guide 73 may serve as well.
When all the entries on the first bill have been completed, the order-sheet 55 is withdrawn from the machine, the different sections are detached along the lines of perforations 66, and the sections 65 are sent to the proper departments.
The platen 10 is then displaced in the usual manner to permit the straightening thereunder of the webs 43, which are drawn forward into engagement with the leadingedge gage 79 adjust-ably secured by means of a screw 80 to a gage-bar 81 secnredto the rear face of the plate 14 by means of a screw 82. The handle 42 is pressed to the rear, withdrawing the lower carbon-sheet 45 to a position between the next pair of forms on the webs 43, and, after restoring the platen to its normal position, the used section of the bill-web or webs is severed over the knife 43. A second order-sheet 55 is introduced in the same manner as the first, and the operation is repeated as many times as there are bills to be filled out.
In the modification shown in Figures 6 and 7 the guides or gages 46 of Figure 5 are replaced by guides or gages 83 having reduced upper ends 84 in the form of pins to enter openings 85 in a bar 86, and shoulders 87 to support said bar. Side gages or guides 88 for the sectional order-sheets are secured on the bar 86 by any suitable means, such as screws 89. It will be evident that the bar 86 inayeasily be applied to or removed from the gages83. If desired the bar 86 may be provided with a plurality of openings S5 at one or both ends to permit use of the bar with the gages 83 when the distance between the gages 83 is varied.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a front-strike typewriting machine,

in combination, a cylindrical platen, a collating table at the delivery side thereof to receive a continuous web and a narrower work-sheet positioned between the web and the platen, said table having a chute of suitable width to receive and side guide the work-sheet, and gripping means at .both sides of said collating table beyond the bounds of said chute to detain the web while the work-sheet is advanced in the chute to elfect a spacing of the lines typed on the work-sheet greater than that of the lines typed on the web.
2. The combination with a cylindrical platen, of a collating table at the delivery side thereof, said collating table comprising a flat central portion substantially tangential. to said platen to receive a work-sheet therefrom, upright walls at the edges of said flat portion, and imper-supports parallel to said flat portion and extending outwardly from the tops of said upright walls to receive the edges of a wider work-sheet outside of the first-mentioned work-sheet and against which supports the edges of the wider work-sheet may be held while the other work-sheet is advanced with reference thereto, each of said paper-supports being provided at its end adjacent the platen with an extension inclined downwardly to the plane of said flat portion to guide upwardly to the paper-support the adjacent edge of the wider work-sheet fed past the printing line.
3. The combination with a cylindrical platen, of a collating table at the delivery side thereof, said collating table comprising a flat central portion substantially t-an-.
gential to said platen to receive a work-sheet therefrom, upright walls at the edges of said flat portion, paper-supports parallel to said flat portion and extending outwardly from the tops of said upright walls to receive the edges of a wider work-sheet outside of the first-mentioned work-sheet and against which supports the edges of the wider worksheet may beheld while the other work-sheet is advanced with reference thereto, each of said paper-supports being provided at its end adjacent the platen with an extension inclined downwardly to the plane of said flat portion to guide upwardly to the papersupport the adjacent edge of the wider work-sheet fed past the printing line, and a clamp associated with each of said supports to hold the edges of the wider work-sheet while the inner work-sheet is advanced with reference thereto.
4. The combination with a cylindrical platen, of a collating table at the delivery side thereof, said collating table comprising a flat central portion substantially tangential to said platen to receive a work-sheet therefrom. upright walls at the edges of said flat portion, paper-supports parallel to said flat portion and extending outwardly from the tops of said upright walls to receive the edges of a wider work-sheet outside of the first-mentioned work-sheet and against which supports the edges of the wider work-sheet may be held while the other work-sheet is advanced with reference thereto. each of said paper-supports being provided at'its end adjacent the platen with an extension inclinec downwardly to the plane of said fiat portion to guide upwardly to the paper-support the adjacent edge of the wider work-sheet fed past the printing line, and a gage on one of said supports to cooperate with indications on said inner worksheet to indicate when the inner work-sheet has been advanced to the proper extent with reference to the outer worksheet. r
5. The combination with a cylindrical platen, of a collating table at the delivery side thereof, said collating table comprising a Hat central portion substantially tangen tial to said platen to receive a work-sheet therefrom, upright walls at the edges of said flat portion, paper-supports parallel to said flat portion and extending outwardly from the tops of said upright walls to receive the edges of a wider work-sheet outside of the first-mentioned work-sheet and against which supports the edges of the wider worksheet may be held while the other work-sheet is advanced with reference thereto, each of said paper-supports being provided at its end adjacent the platen with an extension inclined downwardly to the plane of said flat portion to guide upwardly to the papersupport the adjacent edge of the wider work-sheet fed past the printing line, a clamp associated with each of said supports to hold the edges of the wider work-sheet while the inner work-sheet is advanced with reference thereto, and a gage on one of said supports to co-operate with indications on said inner worksheet to indicate when the inner work-sheet has been advanced to the proper extent with reference to the outer worksheet.
6. In a continuous billing machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, feed-rolls running on the platen, a reciprocable carbon-carrier to hold the rear end of a carbon sheet interleaved between continuous webs passing around the platen, said carbon-carrier being shiftable rearwardly. upon displacement of the platen from the feed-rolls to permit the webs to be straightened thereunder, to shift the carbon-sheet from a completely typed section of the webs to the next unused section thereof, means on the carbon carrier above the carbon for side guiding the rear end of a narrower separate worksheet that passes between said webs and the platen and is advanceable with respect to the webs when the platen is slightly displaced, so that copies of successive lines typed on said webs may be spaced at greater distances on said separate work-sheet,-and means for detaining said webs stationary, outside the separate work-sheet, while said separate work-sheet is being advanced relatively thereto.
7. In a continuous billing machine in which entries are typed on superposed webs and upon the completion of the typing on one section of the webs the carbon-sheets are shifted to the next unused section, in combination, a revoluble platen, teed-rolls to run thereon, means at the introductory side of the platen to side guide a narrower worksheet between the platen and the webs, a collating table at the delivery side of the platen, said collating table having side gages for the edges of said webs, and a central chute to receive and guide the narrower worksheet, said collating table being displaceable to separate said platen and teed-rolls, and means at the edges of said collating table to grip the edges of said webs beyond the bounds "of the guide chute to hold the same while the work-sheet is advanced to space the lines thereon at greater distances than those on the work-webs which are produced at the same time.
8. In a continuous billing machine in avliicli entries are typed on superposed webs and upon the completion of the typing on one section of the webs the carbon-sheets are shifted to the next unused section, in combination, a revoluble platen, teed-rolls to run thereon, a collating table at the delivery side of the platen, said collating table having side gages for the edges of said webs, and a central chute to receive and side guide a work-sheet narrower than the webs and extending between the webs and the platen, said collating table being displaceable to separate said platen and teed-rolls, means at the edges of said collating table to grip the edges of said webs to hold the same while the work-sheet is shifted to -space the lines thereon at greater distances than those on the work-webs which are produced at the same time, and a gage on said collating table to position said work-sheet when advanced with respect to said webs.
9. In a typewriting machine of the fanfold type, in combination, a platen, means for directing a plurality of superposed webs to the platen comprising a guide-rod parallel to the axis of the platen and a pair of guide-fingers projecting upwardly from said rod at the opposite edges of said webs, and a guiding device for an additional worksheet inserted between the webs and the platen, said guidingdevice comprising a bar supported by the guide-fingers for the webs and a second pair of guide-fingers projecting upwardly from said bar to co-operate with the opposite edges otsaid work-sheet.
10. In a typewriting machine ofthe faniold type, in combination, a platen, means for directing a plurality of superposed webs to the platen comprising a guide-rod parallel to the axis of the platen and a pair of guide-fingers projecting upwardly from said red at the opposite edges of said webs, and a guiding device for an additional worksheet inserted between the webs and the platen, said guiding device comprising a bar secured at one end to one of the guidefingers for said webs and slidably supported by the other of said fingers, and a second pair of guide-fingers projecting upwardly from said bar on opposite sides of said worlr sheet.
11. In a typewriting machine of the fanfold type, in combination, a platen, means for directing a plurality of superposed webs to the platen comprising a guide-rod parallel to the axis of the platen and a pair of guidefingers projecting upwardly from said rod at the opposite edges of said webs, and, a guiding device for an additional work-sheet inserted between the webs and the platen,
said guiding device comprising a sheet-supporting bar secured at one end to one of the guide-fingers for said webs and slidably supported by the other of said fingers, and a second pair of guide-fingers projecting upwardly from said bar on opposite sides of said work-sheet, each of the guide-fingers of the first pair being adjustable along said bar. I

In a typewriting' machine of the fanfold type, in combination, a platen, means for directing a plurality of superposed webs to the platen comprising a guide-rod parallel to the axis of the platen, and a pair of guidefingers projecting upwardly from said rod at the opposite edges of said webs, and a guiding device for an additional work-sheet inserted between the webs and the platen, said guiding device comprising a sheetsupporting bar secured at one end to one of the guide-fingers for said webs and slidably supported by the other of said fingers, and a second pair of guide-fingers projecting upwardly from said bar on opposite sides of said work-sheet, each of the guide-fingers of the first pair being adjustable along said bar, and each of the guide-fingers of the second pair being adjustable along said bar.
13. In a typewriting machine of the fantold type, the combination with a platen around which a plurality of superposed webs may be fed, a reciprocable carbon-carrier through which said webs are threaded, side guides for the webs on the carbon carrier, a guide-rod over which said webs pass from the carbon-carrier to the platen, and guide fingers for the side edges of said webs projecting upwardly from said guide-rod, of guiding means for an addltional work-sheet insertible between sa d webs and the platen,

comprising a guiding device mounted on said guide-lingers and guiding means on said carbon-carrier.

In a typewriting machine of the fanl old type, the combination with a platen around which a plurality of superposed webs may be fed, a reciproeable carbon-carrier through which said webs are threaded, a guide-rod over which said webs pass from the carbon-carrier to the platen, and guideiingers for the edges of saidwebs projecting upwardly from said guide-rod, of guiding means for an additional worksheet insertible between said webs and the platen, comprising a guiding dcvice mounted on said guide-lingers, and guiding means on said carbon-carrier, said guiding device comprising a bar detachably mounted on said guide-lingers, and additional guide-lingers projecting upwardly from said bar.
15. In a type-writing machine of the fanfold type, the combination with a platen around which aplurality oi superposed webs may be fed, and a reciprocable carbon-car rier through which said webs are threaded, of upwardly-projecting guide-fingers to cooperate with said webs between the carboncarrier and the platen, said guide-fingers having reduced upper ends, and guiding means for an additional work-sheet insertible between said webs and platen, said guiding means for the additional work-sheet com prising a bar having perforations to receive the reduced upper ends of said guideiingers to beheld thereby on said guidetinge-rs, and additional guide-lingers projecting upwardly from said bar to co-operate with the side edges of saidadditional worksheet.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of agage-bar extending upwardly at the delivery side of the p aten, a leading-edge gage adjustable along said gage-bar, and a collating table in front of said gage-bar and having a cutout along said gage-bar to permit adjustment of the leading-edge gage to positions below the top of the collating table.
17. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination witha revoluble platen, of a wide collating chute and a narrow collating chute at the delivery side thereof, for the guidance therefrom of a condensed recordsheet and a narrow sheet, respectively, the narrow chute being below the wide chute, means for line-feeding said condensed record-sheet, and clips on the wide chute "for en gaging the side edges of said condensed record-sheet to retain it while said narrow sheet is collated thereunder.
18. In a front-strike typewriting machine,

a wide collating chute and anarrow collatlng chute at the delivery side thereof, tor the guidance therefrom of a condensed recimage? ord-slieet and a narrow sheet, respectively, the narrow chute being below the wide chute, means for line-feeding said condensed record-sheet, clips on the wide chute for engaging the side edges of said condensed rec-- ordsheot to retain it while said narrow sheet is collated thereunder, and sideedge guides for said narrow sheet at the intake side of the platen, in register with the sides ot saidnarrow chute.

In a front-strike webananitolding machine, the combination with a 'evoluble platen and means for stripping carbons interleaved with plies of web, of a narrow rccollating chute at the delivery side of said platen for guiding a sectional order or simi lar sheet relatively to said plies of we a second relatively wide chute above said narrow chute for guiding said plies of web, means for lineteeding said plies of web, whereby lines, typed one upon each section of the sectional order-sheet, follow one another closely on said plies of web, and releasable means for retaining said plies of web on said second chute during the recollating of said sectional order-sheet under said plies of web.
20. In a front-strike web-manifolding machine, the combination with arevoluble platen and means for stripping carbons interleaved with plies of web, of a narrow recollating chute at' the delivery side of said platen for guiding a sectional order or similar sheet relatively to said plies of web, a second relatively wide chute above said narrow chute for guiding said plies of web, means for line-feeding said plies ofweb. whereby lines, typed one upon each section of the sectional order-sheet. follow one another closely on said plies of web, releasable means for retaining said plies of web on said second chute during the recollating of said. sectional order-sheet under said plies of web, and a gage at the introductory side of said platen to position said sectional order-sheet for the reception of the first line of typing in the place provided therefor.
21. In a front-strike web-manifolding machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, a platen-frame and means for stripping carbons interleaved with plies of web, of a narrow recollating chute at the delivery side ofsaid platen for guiding a sectional order or similar sheetrelatively to said plies of web, a second relatively wide chute above said narrow chute for guiding said plies of web, means for line-feeding said plies o1 web, whereby lines, typed one upon each section of the sectional order sheet, follow one another closely on said plies of web, releasable means for retaining said plies of we!) on said second chute during the recollating of said sectional order-sheet under said plies of web, and a broad support and a narrow support, both rigid with adj acent to said platen-frame, at the introductory side of said platen, aligned respectively with the sides of said wide chute and said narrow chute for guiding said plies of web ands-aid sectional order-sheet, respectively, to said platen.
22. In a front-strike web-manifolding machine, the combination with a revoluble platen and means for stripping carbons interleaved with plies of web, of a narrow recollating chute at the delivery side of said platen for guiding a sectional order or similar sheet relatively to said plies of web, a second relatively wide chute above said narrow chute Itl guiding said plies of web, means for line-feeding said plies of web, whereby lines, typed one upon each section of the sectional order-sheet, follow one an' other closely on said plies of web, releasable means for retaining said piles of web on said second chute during the recollating of said sectional order-sheet under said plies of web, and a pair of paper-supports extending from said wide chute downwardly to the. plane of the lower chute for directing said plies of web upwardly to said wide chute.
23. In a typewriting machine of the fanfold type, in combination, a platen, means for directing a plurality of superposed webs to the platen including a guide-rod parallel to the axis of the platen and a pair of guidefingers projecting upwardly from said rod at the opposite edges of said webs, and a guiding device for a work-sheet inserted between the webs and the platen, said guiding device including a plate apertured to receive the upper ends of said guide-lingers and a pair of guide-fingers on said plate projecting upwardly therefrom on opposite sides of said work-sheet.
