This invention relates to typewriting machines, especially those known as fan fold or continuous billing machines 1n which there are typed superimposed packs 5 or webs of work-sheetsior plies, the latter being sometimes loose or separate from one another.
According to this invention, two packs or webs, one of which consists of two worksheets or plies having a short form printtd thereon, and the other of which consists of* two work-sheets or plies having a long form printed thereon, may be fed through the machine, etc., in such a manner that the pack having the shorter printed forms will be next to the platen of the typewriter, and the pack or web bearing the longer printed form will be away from the platen; whereby, part, but not all, of the matter typed on the pack or web bearing the longprinted forms will be transferred, by means of suitable carbon-sheets interleaved between the work-sheets or plies, to the pack or web bearing the short printed forms; and whereby the leading edges of the two packs or webs may be so gaged at the conclusion of the typing operation that the worksheets or plies may be torn ott' in unequal lengths.

and that the work-sheets or plies of the pack or web away from the platen bear a long printed invoice form, and that it may be found desirable to transfer to the pack or web bearing the short label form only the matter that is to be typed on the heading of the long invoice form printed on the' other pack or web. n f "up 'j To accomplish this, the work-sheets or plies of both acks or webs, together withl the interleaved? carbons which are held by a suitable carbon-withdrawal mechanism, are drawn through the machine and around the platen. The leading edges of all of the work-sheets or plies of both packs are then placed in registration and the platen lowered to engage with the feed-rolls.

The operator isnow ready to line-space and type on the body of the long invoice form, but it is obvious that if both packs or webs are fed through the machine together,l as is desirable, the body of the long invoice form will be superimposed over the second short label form that is printed -on the work-sheets or plies of the lower pack or web, and that the matter to be written on the body of the long invoice form will be transferred by the carbons to this second short label form.I This is vented by inserting shields or blind sheets underneath the printing surfaces of those carbons which are superimposed over such work-sheets or plies as may bear the short label forms in such a manner as to render ineffective all of the printing surfaces except those of the extreme ends of the carbons which cover the first printed label forms. The shields or blind sheets are suitably fastened, together with the carbons, to the carbon-withdrawal mechanism.
At the conclusion of the typing operation, and when the body of the longer invoice form has been filled in, it is desirable prethat the operator so withdraw the leading `edges of both packs or webs from the machine that the registration marks, which indicate what are to be the leading edges of all the work-sheets or plies for the second printed forms, will be presented in registration to be cut by a knife which is placed inthe machine for that purpose. This is accomplished by back-spacing or reversely feeding the combined packs or webs; releas- Ving the platen'by'lifting it up and away from the feed-rolls; withdrawing the carbons and shields or blind sheets; and again advancing the packs or webs, this time with the fingers, until the present leading edge of the pack or web nearest the platen touches a lower leading-edge gage and the present f,100`

As is usal in the Underwood fan-feld or continuous billing machine, a platen 12 issupported by means of an axle 13, which is journaled in two end members 14 of a swing-frame 15. Ears 14a projecting from the end members 14'are journaled on a shaft' 16 about which the swing-frame 15 oscillates. and then placed on top of the pack or web 30. The work-sheets or plies 30Et of the pack or web 30 have printed thereon a short form, the length of which is indicated by a dividing line 34 in Figure 8. r1`he work-sheets or plies 32a of the pack or web 32 have printedthereon a long form, the length of which is indicated by a dividing line 35,'in Figure 9, and which has an upper margin or heading indicated in the same figure by a dotted line 36.
1t will be observed that when the pack or web 32 is placed over the pack or web 30, the first long forms printed on the worksheets or plies 32u will be superimposed over both the first and second short forms printed on the work-sheets or plies 30, butthat the shields 31a Will protect the second short form printed on the work-sheets or plies 30:L from receiving impressions, through the carbons 31, of that matter typed on the body of the long forms printed on the work-sheets or plies 32a, and that this second short form will be left blank. If it is found more desirable y to dispense with the shields 31a, a carbonsheet, such as is shown in Figure 11, having a blank body portion 37 and a sensitive end portion 38, may lbe used instead, in which case the blank body/portion 37 will serve the same purpo:e as the shields 31a in protecting the second short form printed on the worksheets or plies'30a.
The pack or webs 30 and 32, having been suitably arranged with their leading edges in registration, both are drawn throughthe machine together over the feed-rolls 24 and 25, and under and around the raised platen 12 until the leading edges are far enough past the typing line to receive the first line of matter. The'platen/12 is lowered to its normal position in engagement with the feed-rolls 24 and, 25, and the typing of matter on the packs 0r webs begun. After the matter that is intended for both the heading of the first long form printed on the work-sheets or plies 32a 1 and the body of the first short form printed on the worksheets or plies .30 has been typed, the operator disregards the second short form printed on the work-sheets of plies 30, because they are being protected from impressions from the carbons 31 by the shields 31, and continues to line-space or advance' both packs or webs together and to type the balance of the matter intended for the body of the first long form printed on the worksheets of plies 32a.
At the conclusion ofthe typing operation it will usually be found that the leading edge of the pack or web 30 which bears the 'Shoit printed forms has passed beyond the lower leading-edge gage 28 on the gage-carrying bar 27, as illustrated in Figure/1. Both packs or webs are back-spaced or reversely fed until they are in the position shown in Figure 2. The platen 12 is then raised away from the feed-rolls 24.and 25, by releasing the hook and oscillating the spring-frame 15 upwardly. and forwardly about the shaft 16, until it assumes the relative position shown in Figure 3.
The leading edges of both packs or webs are now grasped by the operator in such a way that the pack or web 30 is held between the first and second fingers, and the pack or web 32 is held between the thumb and first finger of the right hand. The carbon-,withdrawal mechanism 19 is pushed with the left hand to the rearof the subframe 18, thus stripping the work-sheets or plies 30a and 32a of both carbons 31 and 33 and shields 31, after which both packs or webs are again drawn forward until the first an-d second fingers ofthe operator can guide the leading edge of the pack or web 30 to a position' of rest against a stop 39 of the lower leading-edge gage 28. The position of the pack or web 30 will now remain fixed while the pack or web 32 is being further withdrawn by the thumb and first finger until it reaches a long leg portion 44 of the upper leading-edge gage 29, which has previously been positioned on the gage-bar 27 an-d fastened there by a thumb-screw 45.
The position of the packs or webs 30 and 32 will now be substantially as shown in Figure 5 of the drawings, and while the pack or web 30 is being held by the lower' leading-edge gage 28, and the pack or web32 is held against the upper leading-edge gageA 2.9 by the thumb and the first finger of the operators hand, the platen is again lowered,

Having thus described my invention, ll claim:
1. 1n a Atypewriting machine of the fanl fold or continuous billing type, in combination, 'a revoluble platen, means to guide superimposed packs or webs of work-sheets or plies, havingxcarbonsheets interleaved therebetween and having forms of different lengths printed thereon, underneath and. around said platen, means for protectingsaid forms printed on said ,work-sheets or plies of some of said packs or webs from receiving the impression of part, but not all, of the matter typed on other of said` forms printed on said work-sheets or plies of other of said packs or webs, means for lifting or displacing said platen to provide `for the straightening out and drawing forward of said packs or webs, and means rendered operative only when said platen is 1 lifted or displaced for separately gaging the leading edges of said packs or webs, while in'straightened condition, to enable each of said packs or webs to be withdrawn different 'titl k'distances from the machine rand thus enable said work-sheets or plies to be cut o in dilerent lengths from said packs or webs.
2. lln a typwriting machine ot the tanfold or continuous billing type, in combination, a revolublek platen, means to guide superimposed packs or webs of work-sheets or plies, having-carbon-sheets interleaved therebetween and having forms of different lengths printed thereon, underneath and around said platen, means for protecting said forms printed on saidwork-sheets or plies of some of said packs or webs from receiving the impression of part, but not all, ot the matter typed on other of said forms printed onsaid work-'sheets or plies of other of said packsor webs, said protecting means comprising pliable shields or blank sheets so disposed in relation to said carbon-sheets interleaved between said work-sheets or plies of said packs orL webs as' to render part, but not all, ot their printing surfaces ineffective, means for lifting or displacing said platen to provide for the straightening out and drawing forward ofsaid packs or webs, andmeans rendered operative only when said platen is lifted or displaced for separately gaging the leading edges ot said packs or webs, while in straightened condition, to enable each of said packs or webs to be withdrawn different distances from P the machine, and thus enable said worksheets or plies to be cut od in diderent lengths from said packs orwebsn 3. lin a typewriting machine oit the ianfold or Ycontinuous billing type, in combination, a revoluble platen, means to guide superimposed. packs or webs of work-sheets or. plies, having carbon-sheets interleaved therebetween and having `forms of different lengths printed thereon, underneath and around'said platen, means for protecting said forms printed on said work-sheets or plies of some oi saidpacks or webs trom receiving the impression of part, but not all, of the matter typed' on other ci said forms printed on said work-sheets or plies of other of said packs or webs, means for withdrawing said carbon-sheets together with said protecting means from between the Work-sheetsor plies of said packs or webs, said withdrawing means comprising a movable table 'on which are mounted suitable clamping members or'holding said carbon-sheets and said protectin means, means iorlliiiting or displacing said platen to provide for the straightening out and drawing forward of said packs or webs, and means rendered operative only when said platen is lifted 'or displaced for separately gagingthe leading edges of said packs or webs, while in straightened condition, to enable yeach of said packs-or webs to be withdrawn diderent distances from the machine and thus enable said work-sheets or noemen plies to be cut ott" in diderent lengths from said packs or webs.
li. ln a typewriting machine of the tanold or continuous billing type, in combination, a revoluble platen, means to guide superimposed packs or webs of work-sheets or plies, having carbon-sheets interleaved therebetween and having forms of diderent lengths printed thereon, underneath and around said platen, means `for lifting or displacing said platen to provide for the straightening out and drawing torward of said pacm or webs, means, rendered operative onlywhen said platen is lifted or displaced, or 4separately gaging the leading edges ot said packs or webs, while in `.straightened condition, to enable each of said packs or webs to be withdrawn diterent distances :trom the machine and thus enable said work-sheets or plies to be cut n oli2 in dihierent lengths from the packs or webs, such gaging means comprising a gagecarrying bar or guide swingable forwardly and downwardly from an upstanding to a substantially horizontal position, at the time oit displacement ci said platen, directly over said straightened packs or webs, an adjustable lower leading "edge gage slidably mounted on said gage-carrying bar or guide for the purpose oi-gaging the leading edge et van inner one ci' said straightcned packs orwebs, and an adjustable upper leading edge gage slidably mounted on said gage-carrying bar or guide, in a position further awayy from said platen than that of said lower leading edge gage, tor the purpose of gaging the leading edge oi an outer one of said straightened packs or webs by the further withdrawal of said straightened outer pack or web beyond the leading edge oit said straightened inner pack or 5. ln a typewriting machine ofthe fanifold or continuous billing type, in combination, a revoluble platen, a movable swing frame in which said platen is mounted, means to guide superimposed packs or webs of work-sheets or plies, having carbonsheets interleaved therebetween and having :terms of different lengths printed thereon, underneath 4and around said platen, a main platen-trame in which said movable swing frame is mounted to swing upwardly and orwardly, and, in so doing, lift or displace said platen to provide for the straighta'aning out and drawing forward ci said packs or webs, a gage-carrying bar or guide mounted on said swing frame to move therewith forwardly and ,downwardly trom an upstandingto a substantially horizontal position, at the time oi displacement of said platen, directly over said straight ened packs or webs, an adjustable lower leading edge gage slidably mounted on said gage-carrying bar or guide for the purpose 'of gaging the leading edge of an inner one of said straightened packs or webs, a pack or web gripping device so mounted on said lower leading edge gage as to grip or hold the leading edge of said straightened inner pack or web" in position on said lower leading edge gage while an outer straightened pack or web is being drawn beyond said strai htened inner pack or web, and an adjusta le upper leading edge gage slidably mounted on said gage-carrying bar or uide in a position further away from said p aten than that'of said lower leading edge gage for the purpose of gaging the leading edge of an outer one of said straightened acks or webs by the further withdrawal o said straightened outer pack or web beyond the leading edge of said straightened inner pack or web.
6. In a typewriting machine of the fanfold or continuous billing type, in combination, a revoluble` platen, means to guide a pack or web of work-sheets or plies, under- .neath and around said platen, means for lifting or displacing said platen to provide for the straightening out and drawing forward of said pack or web, a gage-carrying bar or guide so disposed as to swing forwardly and downwardly from' an upstanding to a substantially horizontal position, at the time of displacement of said platen, directly over said straightened pack or web, an adjustable leading edge gage sildably mounted onl said gage-carrying bar or guide for the purpose of gaging the leading edge of said straightened pack or web, and a pack or web gripping device, so mounted on said leading edge gage as to grip or hold said leading edge of saidy straightened pack or web in position on said leading edge gage.
7. In a typewriting machine of the fanfold or continuous billing type,'in combination, a revoluble platen, means to guide superimposed packs or webs of work-sheets or plies underneath and around said platen, means for lifting or displacing said platen to provide for the stralghtening out and drawing forward of said packs or webs, means for separately gaging the leading edges of said packs or webs while in straightened condition, to enable one of said packs or webs to be made up of work-sheets or plieshaving one length of form printed thereon, and another of said packs or webs to be made up of work-sheets or plies having a different length of form printed thereon, said gaging means comprising a gage-carryl mg bar or guide, so disposed as to swing forwardly and downwardly from an upstanding to a substantially horizontal position, at the tine of ldisplacement of said platen, directly over said straightened packs or webs, an adjustable lower leading edge gage slidably mounted on said gage-carrying bar or guide for the purpose of gaging the leading edge of an inner one ofy said straightened packs or webs when said straightened inner pack or web is drawn forward, an adjustable upper leading edge gage slidably mounted on said gage-carrying bar or guide in a position further away from said platen than that of said lower leading edge gage for the purpose of gaging the leading edgepof an outer one of said straightened packs or webs by the further withdrawal of said straightened outer pack or web beyond the leading edge of said straightened inner pack or web, and a web-severing or cutting knife fastened in a fixed position relative to, but movable with, said platen for cutting ysaid packs or Webs, at a common registration mark placed thereon, after said packs or webs have been gaged, and after said platen has been returned to its normal position.
8. In a typewriting machine of the fanfold or continuous billing type, in combination, a revoluble platen, means to guide superimposed packs or webs of work-sheets I or plies underneath and around said platen, means for lifting or displacing said platen to providefor the straightening out and drawing forward of said packs or webs, means for separately gaging the leading edges of said packs or webs, while in straightened condition, to enable one of said packs or webs to be made up of work-sheets or plies having one length of form printed thereon and another of said packs or webs to be made up of work-sheets or plies having a different length of form printed thereon, said gaging means comprising a gage-carrying bar or guide, so disposed as to swing forwardly land downwardly from an upstanding to a substantially horizontal position, at the time of displacement of the platen, directly over said straightened packs or webs, an adjustable lower leading edge gage, slidably mounted on saidfgage-carrying bar or guide for the purpose of gaging the leading edge of an inner one of said straightened packs or webs when said straightened inner pack or web is drawn forward, a pack or web gripping device so mounted on said lower leading edge gage as to grip or hold the leading edge of said straightened inner packl or web in position on said lower leading edge gage while an outer straightened pack or web is being drawn beyond said straightened inner pack or web, an adjustable upper leading edge gage slidably mounted on said gage-carrying bar or guide in a position further away from said platen than that of said lower leading edge gage, for the purpose-of gaging the leading edge of an outer one of said straightened packs or webs by further withdrawal of said straightened outer pack or web beyond the leading edge of said straightened inner pack or web, and a web-severing or cutting knife ina-amas fastened in a fined position relative to, but movable with, said platen for cutting said packs or webs at a common registration mark placed thereon after said packs or webs have been gaged, and after said platen has been returned to its normal position.
9. ln a typewriting machine of the fanold or continuous billing type, in combination, a revoluble platen, a movable swing frame in which said platen is mounted, means to guide superimposed packs or webs oit work-sheets or plies underneath and around said platen, a main platen-trame in which said movable swing frame is mounted to swing upwardly and forwardly, and, in

12. ln a typewriting machine, the combination of a carbon-carrier, a displaceable platen, a gage-bar, two gaging members re1- atively y'adjustable on said bar, one in advance of the other for gaging at dilerent locations the leading edges of diversified superposed packs of work-sheets, and means on the inner gaging member for clamping the leadingV edges of the underlying pack while the carbon-carrier retracts manifolding sheets, said clamping means and its associated gaging member being covered by `the'advanced pack.
13. ln a typewriting machine, the combination of a displaceable platen, a carboncarrier, a gage for gaging one `pack of worksheets, gage and standing higher than the irst gage for gaging a second pack of work-sheets superposed upon the first pack and extending to the second gage, and a web-holding clamp upon one of said gages engaging one pack during the retraction of said carbon-carrier.
14C, lin a typewriting machine, the combination of a displaceable platen including a line-feeding mechanism for feeding a pair of continuous work-sheet-packs having blank forms .which are fed around the platen in unison, the inner pack composed of short forms and the outer pack composed of substantially longer forms, carbon-inlays for said packs, a carrier to which all of said carbon-inlays are attached, means for rendering the carbons for the inner pack effective only upon the irst set of forms thereon, a gage for each work-pack to gage the leading edge of one pack in staggered relation to the leading edge of the other pack to bring the'severing positionsot` both packs into alignment, and means to sever both'packs in unison at the single severing position determined by the gages. j
