Be it known thatl, Jnssn A. B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing in Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the'following is a specification.
This invention relates to collating and feeding means for typewriters.
More particularly, it relates to billing machines, in which are typed, at one time, several sheets, such as a worksheet or tall strip, bill-sheet, and ledger-sheet, said bill and ledger 'sheets being separately gaged laterally (because of their varying widths) and also longitudinally, to permit entries that are made at intervals to be accurately aligned and spaced one under another upon the bill, ledger and record sheets.
The present' invention is generally similar in purpose to the invention disclosed in my application No. 404,882, filed August 20, 1920 (now Patent No. 1,487,671, of March 18, 1924). A wide ledger-sheet may be ged by passing it down over a rear paper table, provided with side-edge gages, and bringing it up in front of the platen, so that its upper end lies upon a front papertable, provided with side members, against which the ledger-sheet is gaged laterally. Two sets of auxiliary and co-operating feed-rolls or collating-rolls are provided at the front. table, said ledger-sheet being clamped between said collating-rolls by the actuation of a finger-piece after being adjusted laterally on the front paper-table. These collating-rolls lie outside of the mar gins of the narrower bill-sheet, upon which most of the original entries are made. The bill-sheet is then passed down and gaged laterally by a chute which may be formed in the rear paper-table,- to carry the narrower sheet clear of the first inserted sheet, and guided upwardly between side gages provided upon an auxiliary front papertable which stands clear of the main front paper-table, for the wider sheet, but which is fixed to the side members of said main front table. A record-sheet may be fed around the laten to the rear of the ledgersheet and t e auxiliary rolls, and. beneaththe front tables. The record-sheet may be a tally-strip, and may be held in position on the platen by a suitable tally-strip device.
The auxiliary front paper-table, adjacent one'of the side gages for the bill-sheet, is provided with a sheet-gripping clamp which can be operated to hold said sheet in adjusted position while the work-sheet or ledger-sheet is adjusted, by means of the collating rolls.
The shaft of one set of auxiliary feedrolls is provided with a finger adapted to rest adjacent the flat surface of the auxiliary front paper-table, said finger lying beneath said clamp, so that, when the auxiliary rolls are cast off to release the ledgersheet, the clamp will also be rendered ineffective in order tolrelease the bill-sheet.
When all the sheets have been adjusted laterally and longitudinally with respect to each other, the usual pressure-roll releasehandle is operated to clamp all the worksheets against the platen, preferably before the collating-rolls and the clamp have been released. While the usual feed-rolls are released, and while the ledger-sheet and the bill-sheet are held, respectively, by the collating-rolls and by the clamp, if desired, yet another work-sheet may be inserted and gagged, as an outer sheet. There may be provided an upwardlyextending finger pivotally attached to the frame of the carriage and adapted to rest at the front of the aux iliary front collating-table to engage the sheets at a point intermediate their side edges. There may be provided also an addi-' tional wing-scale to aid in sheets inserted into the machine when the platen is near one end of its travel before being brought back for the beginning of a new line of typing.

A bill-sheet 10 and a ledger-sheet 11 are adapted to be passed downwardly over a rear paper-table 13, around the platen 15, mounted upon axle 16, journaled in the end walls 17 of the platen-frame of the, usual carriage. A record-sheet, which is here is fed from feedroll 20 of a tally-strip evice- 21, mounted on the end walls 17 of the carriage, said strip passing around the platen to a winding roll 22.
The ledger-sheet 11 is' fed over the rear paper-table between adjustable side gages 25, movable alon rod 26, fixed on brackets on the rear of t e paper-table. The narrower bill-sheet is adapted to be fed over the paper-table in a depression or chute 30, forming side-edge gages therefor, said chute merging with the extension 31 of the papertable, forming the usual paper-apron.
Front and rear pressure-rolls or feed-rolls 32 and 33 are adapted to press the sheets against the platen.
Passing around the platen, the ledger and bill-sheets are carried upwardly in front of the platen, where the ledger-sheet 11 is adapted to be adjusted upon a front collating-table 35. It is understood that until all the work-sheets are adjusted relatively to each other, the pressure-rolls 32 and 33 remain cast off the platen.
As shown in Figure 1, the collating-table 35 is composed of two sections carried by supports 36 suitably mounted on the end plates 17 of the carriage-frame. The collating-table 35 is provided with side edge gages 37 which co-operate with the side edge gpges 25 to guide the ledger-sheet 11 at the out and rear. The collating-table is also provided with openings 40, into which project collating-rollers 41 from the rear, and co-operating with said rollers are collating-rollers 42 at the front of the collatingtable. Rollers 41 and 42 are mounted upon shafts 43 and 44, respectively, shaft 43 being journaled in the end walls of the carriage and having a knob 45 at its outer end for turning said shaft, in order thereby to adjust the 'ledger-sheet 11 relatively to the printing line on the platen. Shaft 44 and rollers 42 may be swung forwardly to move the rollers 42 out of contact with rollers 41, because said shaft is fixed to rock-arms 46, which are fixed to short'shafts 47 'ournaled in brackets 50 on each end wall 1 Shaft 44 has an extension 51, upon which is fixed a finger-piece 52. By swinging finger-piece 52 forwardly, rollers 42 are swung away from rollers 41, and by swinging said finger-piece rearwardly, rollers 42 are brought into gripping relation with rollers 41. The shafts 47, journaled in brackets 50, normally tend to press feed-rollers 42 rearwardly, because said shafts are each provided with a cam having a depression in each of which normally seats a projection on a spring-pressed follower 53, pivoted at 54 on each bracket. When the pressurerollers 32 and 33 are cast off and the collating-rolls 41 and 42 are in engaging relation, rotation of knob 45 will feed a sheet upwardly, or downwardly, to any desired extent. The table 56, as shown in Figures 1 and 2,'has downturned flanges 58, which are fixed to the side gages 37 of the main collating-table. vided a space 60 between the main and auxiliary collating-tables, through which passes the ledger-sheet. The bill-sheet passes over the auxiliary collating-table 56 and is gaged at the front by side edge gages 57 and at the rear by the side walls of chute 30.
While pressure-rolls 32 and 33 are, cast off, the ledger-sheet is held in position by rollers 41 and 42. The bill-sheet is held by a clamp pivoted on one of the sections of the collating-table 56 and adapted to be swung over a side gage 57 against the billsheet. The clamp consists of a member 61, pivoted at 62 to a bracket 63, fixed to the table 56. The member 61 has a bent portion 64 adapted to avoid contact with the side gage 57, and has a rubber band 65 at its end adapted to press the bill-sheet against table 56. In order to facilitate line-feeding of the bill-sheet 10 and the ledger-sheet 11 during the typing operation, the clamp 61 and the collating-rolls 41 and 42 may be released. Also the clamp and the collating-rolls should be released when a bill has been typed and the ledger and bill-sheetsam to be with-.
drawn from the machine. It is desirable to provide mechanism for simultaneously releasing the clamp holding the bill-sheet and separating the auxiliary rolls 41 and 42 holding the ledger-sheet. This means comprises a finger 71, fixed to shaft 44 and projecting upwardly until it is capable of resting just at the front of the in broken lines in Figure 4. Member 61 of the clamp is provided with an extension 72, beneath which finger 71-is adapted to lie when the clamp and the collating-auxiliary devices carried by table section 56, upon which the bill-sheet is held, as shown J devices carried spring 77 engaging a block 78 on which the] finger 1s fixed, and is adapted to direct the sheets against the front of the auxiliary collating table at a point intermediate the side edges of the sheets.
In the machine of the present invention if for any reason it should be found desirable to type another work-sheet in addition to the bill-sheet 10, ledger-sheet .11 and tallystrip 12, or corresponding sheets, such additional sheet may be inserted as an outer' sheet and may be gaged and adjusted over the auxiliary front collatin table 56 while the other sheets in the mac e are held in position b' the means hereinbefore described. owever, in view of the particular construction of the clamp-releasing means shown in the drawings, such additional sheet should be sufficiently narrow to escape the clamp-releasing finger 71 at the left margin of the sheet. Of course, if desired, a plurality of work-sheets may be superimposed and all adjusted together, and may be all held in adjusted position by the clamp 61. Y
Variations may be resorted to withinthe scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination with a platen-frame and a revoluble platen journaled therein, of a rear paper-table fixed in said frame and provided with side-edge gages for aligning thereon a wide work-sheet,. and provided with other side-edge gages for separately aligning thereon a narrow work-sheet lying between the edges of the wide work-sheet, the platen-frame at the front of the platen for separately aligning each of said sheets to conform to its rear alignment, said devices comprising a wide front collating table provided with sidecdge gages for aligning the wide work-sheet, and a narrow front collating table provided with side-edge gages for separately ali ing the narrow work-sheet, and releasa le means for gripping the narrow sheet to the narrow'collatlng table' independently of the wide sheet, and in any position to which the narrow sheet may he collated.

3. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination with a platen-frame and a revoluble platen journaled therein, of a rear paper-table fixed in the platen-frame and provided with side-edge gages for aligning a wide work-sheet, said rear paper-table having a chute formed therein roviding side-edge gages for aligning a narrow worksheet 1 ing between the edges of the wide work-s eet and overlying the latter upon the platen, devices carried by the platenframe at the front of the platen for separately aligning each of said sheets to conform to its rear alignment, said devices comprisin a wide collating table provided with side-e ge gages for aligning the wide worksheet, and a narrow collating table in spaced relation at the front of the wide collating table and provided with side-edge gages for aligning the narrow work-sheet; a releasable sheet-gripping clamp associated with the narrow collating table for holding the narrow sheet in adjusted position, collating means for adjusting the wide worksheet comprising front and rear sheet-gripping collating rolls associated with the Wide collating table, and means for rotating said collating rolls in either direction to any desired extent for correspondingly adjusting the wide work-sheet to any desired position relatively to the print-mg line on the platen, whereby each of said work-sheets may be held in position to enable the other sheet to be adjusted.
4. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination with a platen-frame and a revoluble platen journaled therein, of a rear paper-table fixed in the platen-frame and provided with side-edge gages for aligning a wide work-sheet, said rear pape -table having a chute formed therein providing side-edge gages for alignin a narrow Worksheet 1 ing between the e ges of the wide work-s eet and overlying the latter upon the platen, devices carried by the platenframe at the front of the platen'for separately aligning each of said sheets to conform to its rear alignment, said devices comprisin a wide collating table provided with side-e ge gages for aligning the wide worksheet, and a narrow collating table in spaced relation at the front of the wide collating table and provided with side-edge gages for aligning the narrow work-sheet; a releasable sheet-gripping clamp associated with the narrow collating table for holding the narrow sheet in adjusted position, collating means for adjusting the wide Worksheet comprising front and rear sheet-gripping collating rolls associated with the wide collating table, collating rolls in either direction to any desired extent for correspondingly adjusting the wide work-sheet to any desired position relatively to the printing line .on the platen, so that each of said sheets may be held in position to enable the other sheet to be adjusted, and means for concomitantly releasing the grip of said collating rolls and of said clamp to enable the adjusted worksheets to be line-fed, and releasable feedrolls to co-operate with the platen for linefeeding the adjusted Work-sheets.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of releasable sheet-gripping means independent of the platen for holding a worksheet in adjusted position on the platen, releasable collating rolls independent of the platen for gripping another work-sheet passing around the platen, and means for rotating said rolls in either direction to any desired extent for adjusting the works-sheet gripped thereby to any desired position relatively to the printing line on the platen.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of means for holding an inner work-sheet in position on the platen, releasable-sheet-gripping means independent of the platen for holding an outer workheet in adjusted position on the platen, and collating means for adjusting an intermediate work-sheet relatively to the printing line on the platen without disturbing said inner and outer work-sheets, comprising co-operating collating rolls to grip the intermediate sheet independently of the platen, means for rotating said rolls in either direction to any desired extent for correspondingly adjustin the intermediate work-sheet to any desire ppsition relatively to the printing line on the laten, and means for separating tllQOOllfitlIlg rolls to release the adjusted intermediate worksheet.
7. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination with arevoluble platen, of a collating table at the delivery side of the platen, front and rear collating rolls associated with the collating table to grip a work-sheet passing around the platen and over said collating table, means for rotating said rolls in either direction to any desired extent for corres ndingly adjusting the Work-sheet to any esired position relatively to the printin line on the platen, a second collating ta le spaced forwardly from the first at the delivery side of the platen for a second work-sheet passing means for rotating said around the platen at the outside of said first work-sheet, a releasable sheet-gripping clamp associated with said second collating table for holding said second work-sheet in adjusted position so as to enable the first work-sheet to be adjusted relatively thereto by means of said collating rolls, and means for separating the collating rolls to release the adjusted work-sheet held thereby.
8. In afront-strike typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of a collating table at the delivery side of the platen, front and rear collating rolls associated with the collating table to grip a work-sheet passing around the platen and .over said collating table, means for rotating said rolls in either direction to any desired extent for correspondingly adjusting the work-sheet to any desired position relatively to the rinting line on the platen, a second collating table spaced forwardly from the first platen for a second work-sheet passing aroun'dithe platen at the outside of said first work-sheet, a releasable sheet fgri ping clamp associated. with said secondsicollatin table for holding said second work-sheet in adjusted iposition' so as to enablethe first work-sheet;- be'adjusted relatively thereto by means-"of said collating rolls, means for concomitantly releasing the grip of said collating rolls and of said clamp to enable the adjusted work-sheets to be line-fed, and means for line-feeding the adjusted worksheets.
9. In a typewriting machine, thecombination with a platen and a platen-frame, of
a rear paper-table fixed in said frame, de-H vices associated with the rear paper-table for separately supporting and aligning superposed work-sheets, a collating device at the front of the platen comprising super-v posed and spaced tables rigidly connected one to the other and forming upper and lower and supporting tables for separately supporting and aligning said sheets to conform to their rear alignment,
rear feed-rolls projectin through the lower of said frontpaper-tab es, front feed-rolls co-operating therewith to holda sheet in po sition on said lower table, and a clamp on said upper table to hold a second sheet in position thereon.

In a typewriting machine, the combi-' nation with a platen and a plateneframe, of a rear paper-table fixed in said frame, devices associated with the rear paper-table for separately supporting and aligning superposed work-sheets, a collating device at the front of'the platen comprising superposed and spaced tables rigidly connected one to the other and forming upper and lower guiding and supporting tables for separately supportin and aligning said sheets to conform to eu-"rear alignment, rear and rear rolls are separated.

spaced superposed collating tables at the front of the platen, a releasable sheet-grip ping device associated with each collating table for separately grippmg and hold ng superposed worksheets in ad usted position on the platen, and means for concomitantly releasing both of said sheet-gripping devices.

In a typewritin machine, the combination with a reyolub e platen, of a' releasable sheet-grippmg device inde endent of the platen for-holding a workeetin ad in effective position and the front feed-rolls coo crate with the rear feed-rolls, said fin- {usted position on the platen, releasable colating rolls independent of the platen for gripping another work-sheet passing around the platen, means for rotating said rolls in either direction to any desired extent for adjusting the work-sheet gripped thereby to any desired position relatively to the printing line on the platen, and means for concomitantly releasing said collating rolls and said sheet-gripping device.
15. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of
' a releasable sheet-gripping device independent of the platen for holding a work-sheet in adjusted position on the platen, and collating means at the front of the'platen for adjusting an underlying work-sheet relatively to the printing line on the platen without disturbing the overlying work-sheet held by said sheet-gripping device, said collating means comprising releasable co-operating collatin rolls to grip the underlying sheet indepen ently of the platen, and means for rotatin said rolls in either direction to any desire extent for adjusting the under lyin work-sheet gripped thereby to any desire position relative y to the printing line on the platen. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of releasable sheet-grippin means independent of the platen for ho ding a work-sheet in adjusted position on the platen, releasable collating rolls independent of the platen for gripping another work-sheet passing around the platen, and collating-roll-rotating means to; adjusting the work-sheet gripped by the ro ls.
17. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of a plurality of collating tables at the front of the platen, one table in front of the other, so that the rear work-sheet occupies a position between the tables, and separate sheet-gripping means for separately and independently gripping work-sheets on the dififerent collat mg tab es independently of the platen, in
any positions to which said sheets may be collated, each of said tables open at the top affording unobstructed passage for the sheets.
