This invention relates to a typewriting machine combined with a sound-deadening casing. One of its features relates to means whereby the platen may be rotated fromthe outside of the casing. The, Underwood standard typewriter, in connection with which this invention is illustrated, comprises key-controlled mechanism for shifting the platen to'either upper or lower case type positions. There 1s provided an exterior linger-wheel mounted on a bracket, the latter being movable by the action of the shift key to maintain operative relationship'between the finger-wheel and't-he platen-axle. The finger-wheel is fast to a shaft that telescopes into and is spline-d to a tube which serves as the platen-axle. The carriage may travel while the finger-wheel is stationary outside of the casing.
The cover of the casing is mounted on rear hinges. Since the finger-wheel is placed above the body-part of the casing and extends through the side Wall ofthe hinged cover, it is necessary to provide a slot .in the 35 side of the cover to clear the shaft of the finger-wheel. Said slot may be sealed with felt. V
Another feature relates to means for controlling the trailing'edge of the work-sheet, 39 especially whenit is a stiff cardor heavy paper. The-platen is mounted on the axle in the regular manner by means of end pieces 48 secured to the axle by means of screws 49, one of which is made longer to screwthrough the tube and to press upon the shaft 47 The shaft 42 is provided with a splined groove 50 engaging with the end of a screw 51 secured to one of the finger-Wheels 45. The purpose of this groove and screw is to rotatably connect the platen to the fingerwheel 41 outside of the casing, while at the same time rendering the carriage operable for letter-space travel. For the purpose of preventing lateral displacement of the shaft 42 when the carriage is operated, there is provided a collar 52 secured to the shaft by means of a screw 53.
In order that, when the platen is shifted to upper-case position, the position of the finger-wheel 41 will be maintained substantially in line with the axis of the platen, to thus eliminate any binding of the shaft 42 against the wall of the tube 43, there is provided mechanism operatively connected to the carriage-shifting key 20 in a manner to effect the raising of the finger-wheel simul taneously with the shifting of the platen. Said mechanism comprises a rigid bracket 54 fast to one of the plates 25 of the platen shifting mechanism by means of screws 55. The bracket 54 extends outwardly from the machine frame and terminates with a bentup tab 56 having a stud 57 fast thereto upon which a roller 58 is rotatab-ly mounted. The roller 58 engages with a cam face 59 of a piece 60 pivotally mounted on a stud 61 fast to a bracket 62 forming a. part of the body-partto which it is secured by means of screws 63, The bracket 62 is provided with a slot 64 to permitthe up-and-down travel of the shaft 42 when urged by the action of the roller 58 actuating upon the cam face 59. It will be noted that the cam face 59, slot 64 and piece 60 may be designed so that the travel of the finger-wheel will correspond to the travel of the platen. At its rearmost end the plate is againbent upwardly at 73 forming a rear wall 74 for said pocket 70, which wall terminates with an outwardly-extending bend 75 to facilitate the insertion of the bottom edge of the work-sheet or card into the pocket, as shown in Figure 1, iuwhich the card forms a loop 76 at the top thereof.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, f claim:
1. The combination with a typewriting machine including an upwardly-shiftable platen and a hollow platen-axle, of a sounddeadening casing including a lower bodypart and a slotted cover hinged the1'eto,and means for rotating the platen from outside the casing, said meansincluding a splined shaft telescoping into said platen-axle and arranged to extend therefrom through an uprightly-disposed slot in the end wall of said cover.
2. The combination with a typewriting machine including a revoluble platen which is laterally movable, of a sound-deadening casing including a lower body-part and a cover hinged thereto at the back, and means for rotating the platen from outside the casing, said means including a hollowplatenshaft for said platen, a splined shaft arranged for telescoping into said hollow platen-shaft and for extending therefrom through a slot in an end wall of said cover,

In c'onbination, a typewriting machine T having a revoluble platen, a hollow axle therefor, a carriage and a platen-shifting mechanism, a. spline-control screw in said axle extending into the. hollow portion there of a sound-deadening casing having a bodypart and a cover therefor, said cover being displaceable, means forv rotating \theplatcn from the outsidefof the casing without necessitating the displacement ofgthe cover, said means including a splined shaftextending into said platen-axle and outwardly therefrom to the exterior of the casingandhaving a finger-wheel fast thereto and at the outer end thereof, the spline in said shaft en gaging with a screw in said axle through which the platen is rotated by the. revolving action of the finger-wheel, means mounted on said mechanism for supporting the end of the shaft near the finger-wheel to raise the shaft in substantial alignment with the platen-axis when the platen is shifted to upper-case position, and means for preventing the lateral displacement of the fingerwheel when letter-feeding theplaten.
11. A typewriting machine having a, revo luble platen, a carriage and a platen-shifting mechanism, in combination with a soundthe finger-Wheel when letter-feeding deadening casing having a body-part and a cover therefor, said cover being displaceable, means for rotating the platen from the outside of the casing Without necessitating the displacement of the cover, said means includin a collapsible splined shaft extending to the exterior of the casing and having a finger-wheel fast thereto and at the end thereof, the spline in said shaft engaging with a screw fast, to the platen through which the platen is rotated by the revolving action of the finger-wheel, means for sup porting the end of the shaft near the fingerwheel to hold the shaft in substantial alignment with the platen-axis when the platen is shifted to upper-case position, and means for preventing the lateral displacement of the platen, said lasttwo mentioned means in cluding a rigid bracket fast to a movable member of the platen-shifting mechanism, a fixed bracket fast to the body-part of the casing and forming an integral part thereof, a shaft-supporting piece rockably mounted on the fixed bracket, said piece being oper ated by the rigid bracket, and a collar fast to the shaft, the collar being controlled against lateral movement between the shaftsupporting piece and the fixed bracket.

The combination with a typewriting machine having a platen, a laterally-movable carriage, and a paper-table at the rear of the platen, of a sound-deadening casing, and a stiff pocket fastened to said papertable and extending rearwardly therefrom and terminating clear of the rear Wall of said casing, said pocket having a flared throat adjacent said paper-table for receiving the end of a work-piece and for holding the same to prevent it from dragging against the inner surface of said casing upon lateral movement of said carriage.

In a typewriting machine having a revoluble platen and a" carriage therefor, the carriage being arranged for letter-space travel, the combination with a sound-deadening casing having a body-part and a cover therefor, of-means for controlling the position of the trailing or bottom edge of a stiff work-sheet to prevent its engagement with the inner sides of the walls of said casing, said means including a plate at the rear of the carriage, said plate having a pocket for receiving the trailing edge of the worksheet.

A sound-deadening casing for a type- Writing machine including a lower bodypart, a cover for said body-part, and hinges for pivotally connecting said cover to said body-part, said cover having a slot through an end wall extending upwardly from the lower edge thereof to a point a short distance above the intersection of said end wall and the extension of the axis of said platen when the latter is in upper-case position, a short upper portion of said slot beiingsubstantially vertical. and the remainder of said slot being curved on a circular arcwhose center licson a line. extending through the axis of said hinges, and a plate fastened on an end wall of said body-part and extending upwardly therefrom to be disposed closely against the slot in the end wall of the cover, so as to seal the curved portion of said slot against the emissionof sound.
15.111 a typewriting machine having a platen revolubly mounted "on a shiftable platen-frame borne by a carriage arranged for letter-space travel, the combination with a sound-deadening casing having a bodypart and a cover therefor, of means borne by the platen-frame for controlling the position of thetrailing edge of a worksheet around the platen to hold the edge of the work-sheet away from the Walls of said casing, so as to permit the free movement of the carriage, said means including a plate fast to the platen-frame and extending su stantially the full width of the platen, the plate being bent at the rear of the platen and forming a pocket for housing thetrailing edge of the work-sheet. 7
