TYPEWRITING MACHINE I Filed Oct. 8, 1956 Patented Apr. 5, 19 38 TYPEWR-ITING MACHINE Jesse A. B. Smith, Stamford, Conn, assignor to Underwood Elliott Fisher Company. New York, N. Y., a corporation of Delaware Application October 8,
11 Claims.
This invention relates to typewriters, and more particularly to masks for portable typewriters.
The improved mask has a single one-piece cover to overlie both ribbon spools and a top plate projecting forwardly between the sides of the mask, and affording clearance for the typebars, and conducing to ornamental appearance.
Brackets are slidably mounted on the side walls of the mask, and fixed to the sidewalls of the cover, and are so constructed that the cover may be moved forward to expose the ribbon spools, and also the type-bars, for inspection and cleaning. 1
The top cover of the mask does not interfere with movement of the carriage, even when drawn forwardly to permit ribbon changes, and type cleaning or adjustment.
The forward extension of the cover projects beyond its sides, in the same plane as the sloping front section of the sides of themask, affording clearance for the type-bars and improving the appearance. It will not interfere with carriage manipulation either in operating or cleaning positions.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure l is a perspective View looking down on an Underwood portable typewriter towards the upper front left hand corner of the machine, and showing parts of the ribbon spool cover and parts of the mask broken away.
Figure 2 is an inside side elevation, partly in section, and showing the ribbon spool cover or top of the mask in the open position; and
Figure 3 is a front view partly in section of one end of the mask, and showing the ribbon spool cover operating mechanism.
In the Underwood portable typewriter shown in the drawing, a protecting ornamental mask it comprises a lower portion which enoases a frame it, which is supported on legs l2. Inwardly-turned flanges IS on the bottom of the mask iii underlie inwardly-turned lugs M on the frame ii, to which they are tied by screws 55 which are surrounded by felt vibration killers it. The mask ill and frame H are further tied together in any conventional manner, which forms no part of the invention. The side wall of mask it has a concave portion il in the upper edge of the wall for the passage of the carriage of the typewriting machine. conventional with Underwood portable machines, are shown as follows: a comb type-bar guide it, keys 29, type-bars 2|, a segment 22, a type-bar Typewriter parts,

guide 23, a ribbon 24,= ribbon spools 25, a linespace lever 26, a reciprocating carriage 21, and a platen 28. The carriage 2lis mounted in any well-known manner and has pivotally fastened thereon the line-space lever 26 by screw 29.
means of a The novel top or one-piece ribbon spool cover 30 of the'mask It has a central cut out portion iin the top and ribbon-spool-clearing portions 32 laterally extended'from the rear ends of sides 33 of said cover 30.

The lower slide section M of bracket 40 is-positioned between mask Ill and frame II and is conn ected to the upper section at by means of a vertical section 35, which has a bend 56 to enable the upper slide section 48 to extend inward over frame H in order to clear the front edge of t he side wall of mask Hi when the ribbon spool cover is moved forward.
