Abstract
455,064. Type-bar-making machines. WALKER, V. E., 9, Kingsway, London.- (Mergenthaler Linotype Co. ; 29, Ryerson Street, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.) Oct. 9, 1935, No. 27844. [Class 100 (iii)] Assembling matrices.-In machines having means for assembling matrices at either of two levels, the assembler elevator is arranged to be vertically adjustable, so that the assembly level of the matrices can be kept constant in relation to the axis of the star-wheel whether the matrices are being caught in the upper or in the lower position. It is thereby ensured that all the matrices are straightened into the vertical position by the star-wheel as they enter the assembler. The assembler has, as hitherto, a movable rail 40, Fig. 1, operated by a finger-lever 51, for supporting matrices in the upper position, the rail having a short independently movable section 41 at the receiving end, to enable mixed lines to be composed. The assembler is supported by an arm 52, Fig. 3, pivoted to it, and having at the lower end a roller 54, adapted to rest in either of two recesses 55, 56 at different levels in the face of a supporting cam 57. The cam is vertically adjustable on the machine frame, so as to enable the initial position of the elevator to be adjusted. The arm 52 is operated by means of a knob 66, to shift the roller 54 from one to the other of the recesses 55, 56, and thereby raise or lower the elevator through a distance equal to that between the two assembly levels. The arm 52 also operates the short rail section 41 through an extension 67. The spaceband buffer 77, which is engaged by grooves in the lower ends of the spacebands, is vertically adjustable with the assembler. The buffer is carried by a slide mounted on the machine frame, and is depressed by the assembler against the action of a spring.
