Abstract

446,243. Type-bar-making machines. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY, Ltd., 9, Kingsway, London, and GAYTER, E., Newlands, Walton Road, and HAYWARD, A. S., 1, Whiteley Place, both in Altrincham, Cheshire. Oct. 25, 1934, No. 7800/36. Divided out of 445,899. [Class 100 (iii)] Magazines and escapements.-In machines having two stationary magazines, the assembler entrance comprises a lower fixed section and two upper pivoted sections, which are conjointly adjustable to bring one or the other into operative position, a set of escapement strikers being carried by one pivoted section. The passing of the matrices between the escapement strikers, and the consequent limitation of the size of the matrices that can be used, are thereby avoided. The adjustable sections 53, 54, Fig. 1, of the entrance are mounted on separate pivots 56, 57, and are rocked simultaneously to bring either of them into operative relation with the corresponding magazine and with the fixed section 10 of the entrance. The escapements of the upper magazine 1 are operated through pivoted tappets 31 and strikers 18 mounted to slide on the entrance section 53. The escapements of the lower magazine 2 are operated through pawls 61 carried in a slide 9, which is adjusted by connections from the pivot 56 of the entrance section 53. The escapements are operated from reeds 20 by two-armed levers 19. When the entrance 53 is in operative position, the arms 62 of the levers 19 act on the strikers 18, and the pawls 61 are lowered, so that the arms 63 of the levers are inoperative. When the entrance 54 is moved into operative position, the pawls 61 are raised into the path of the arms 63, and the strikers 18 move out of the path of the arms 62. In a modification, the levers 19 are replaced by pairs of levers 64, 65, Fig. 2, which are pivoted together, so as to move in opposite directions. The escapement reeds 20<a> can be rocked into either of two positions, so as to give an operative movement to either the levers 64 or the levers 65.
