[Class 100 (iii).] Assembling matrices. -To facilitate the handling of hand-composed lines, the intermediate channel is formed with a detachable section, which serves as a hand composing - stick. The channel is formed with three pairs of supporting-rails, the upper rails b<1> serving to engage the ears of the spacebands, and the intermediate and lower rails b<2>, b3 serving to support the matrices at either of two levels. The front wall Bl of the channel has a removable section F, which carries the supporting-rails and is secured to the wall B<1> by sliding latch-pins B<5>, operated by handles b<6>. The section F is sustained in vertical position by banking-screws b<4>, against which it is held by a spring B<7>. The section carries a V-shaped bar F<3>, which is supported by pivoted arms F<4>, and is adapted to engage in the V-shaped notches in the matrices and spacebands in order to hold them down. Fingers F<2>, attached to the ends of the bar F<3>, serve to confine the composed line. The line is composed in the section F, when detached from the machine, and held in an inclined position, the bar F<3> being raised. The bar F<3> is then moved down to retain the line, and the section F re-applied to the machine. The bar F3 and fingers F<2> are then moved out of engagement with the line, which is transferred manually to the first elevator.
