Assembling matrices; driving-mechanism.- A typographical line-casting machine operated by an automatic tape control unit includes means for rendering the keyboard operating mechanism inoperative and the assembler elevator raising mechanism operative at the end of a line, means for normally restarting the keyboard operating mechanism on the return of the elevator to casting position, and delay means, operated by the delivery mechanism which transfers the composed line from the elevator to the casting position, to independently maintain the tape arrested on line transfer movement of the delivery mechanism until the return movement of the delivery mechanism, after which the tape is allowed to advance. When the delivery carriage 7 moves to the left, a switch 31 is closed by means of a cam 25 and bar 28, so as to energize a solenoid 34 and cause a lever 18 to swing against the tape-advancing shaft 12. A projection 19 on the shaft enters a hole in the lever so shaped that the shaft is moved axially to disengage its driving clutch. When the carriage 7 returns to the right, the clutch is reengaged. In this way, when double-column lines are being cast, sufficient delay is caused to prevent a further line being composed until sufficient matrices have been returned to the magazine. For casting normal lines, delay is unnecessary, and a switch 36 is opened to disable the delay means.
