Typographic typesetting machine. The present invention relates to a typographic composing machine of the type in which circulating matrices and space bands are composed in lines in an assembly elevator by the operation of a keyboard, the elevator is raised to a position. Line transfer tion, the compound line is transferred from it, by a delivery mechanism, to the face of a mold to cast a character bar or block line, after which the dies and space bands are separated and returned to their storage places in a store, the machine being fitted with an automatic control system,
such as the teletype system which automatically operates the keypad and lifts the assembly elevation.
In these machines, the dies carrying the characters are. stored in magazines from which they are selectively released under the action of code perforations made in a ribbon. These magazines are divided into a number of separate channels and each channel, running the length of the magazine, accommodates approximately twenty. matrices all of the same character, although there may be more than one channel side by side for more frequently used characters, such as the letter e. After casting, the dies return to the respective channels of the magazine by means of a well known dispensing mechanism.
When the composition is done at relatively high speeds, it is. common to have two dialed lines circulating in the machine while a third is being dialed. For example, during the casting of a line, there may be a second line composed in the waiting position, that is to say waiting to be received by the carrier who brings the line to the casting position, and a third line composed or in the process of being composed in the assembly elevator.
When composing rows having the width of regular columns, the assortment of storable matrices are generally suitable to allow the composition of at least three entire rows without completely exhausting. matrices stored in a channel, but when composing exceptionally long lines, for example having the. width of two columns, the composition at this speed is not. no more possible.
When we cast lines having the width of two columns, we have. it is currently customary to leave a certain length of perforated tape blank after each line, so that the machine does not run out. of matrices. The machine according to the present invention a. aim to avoid this fact.
using a delay device, The machine according to the invention comprises a keyboard intended to selectively release the dies contained in a magazine, an assembly elevator in which the dies are composed in lines, a delivery mechanism intended to transfer the line composed of the elevator in the high position with the casting mechanism, an automatic device for controlling the tape comprising a mechanism intended to automatically actuate the keyboard and a mechanism used to lift the assembly elevator up to the delivery mechanism, a device making inactive the mechanism which activates the keyboard at the end of the composition of a line and activates the mechanism which raises the assembly elevator,
and a device which restarts the mechanism which activates the keyboard when the assembly elevator returns to the position of composition of the lines, this machine being characterized in that it comprises a delay device controlled by the movement of the delivery mechanism so as to keep the ribbon stopped during the line transfer from the delivery mechanism, even after the elevator has returned to the composition position and to the position. resumption of the tape advance when the line delivery mechanism returns.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a partial front view. Fig. 2 is a circuit diagram as well as a side view, on a larger scale, of a drive mechanism of an automatic control system.
Fig. 3 is a front view, on a larger scale, of certain parts shown in FIG. 1, but in a different position.
In known typesetting machines, the characters are selectively released from their magazine (not shown) by the operation of a keyboard A and they fall by gravity on an inclined conveyor belt 1 which brings them, through a chute, should a star wheel 2 constantly rotating. This wheel stacks them one by one, in the order of their release, in an assembly elevator 3, against a raised line support finger fixed to the end of a slider 4 elastically mounted. When the composition of the line is finished, the elevator 3 goes up and the line is presented between a pair of fingers 5 and 6 suspended from a carriage 7 line delivery.
This carriage in turn transfers the completed line from the assembly elevator to a vertical conveyor (not shown) which brings the line to the casting mechanism. The transfer movement of the line delivery trolley is effected by anti-clockwise rotation of a shaft 8, actuated by cam and of an operating lever 9 carried by said shaft. The elevator 3 remains in the up position until the line has been removed from it, after which the elevator 3 is released and. can fall by gravity to his. line composition position, all in a known way.
The automatic operation of the keyboard is controlled by the passage of a perforated tape through a reader mechanism shown schematically. in fig. 1 and generally designated by B, such as for example a known teletype control mechanism. For the present case, it suffices to say that the ribbon advances step by step under the control of a cam actuated rock from an actuated shaft 12, connected by a clutch 11 (fig. 2) to a toothed wheel. helical 13 wedged on a shaft 13a ..
This wheel 13 meshes with a helical wheel 1.4 wedged on a shaft 15 actuated by a belt and a pulley from the so-called intermediate shaft of the machine.
Operating. normal ribbon drive mechanism, when a full line a. been composed in the assembly elevator 3, the rotation of the ribbon feed shaft 12 is. interrupted by the movement of a lever 18 which pivots about its pivot. 18a to come and rest against the tree. This shaft 12 carries a projecting lug 19 which, in the operating position of the lever 18, penetrates into a hole 20 which it presents, this hole comprising a bevelled edge 20a engaging with the lug 19 and causing the disengagement. clutch 11 and shaft stop 12. While the tape is stopped, the assembly elevator rises to bring the line to the transfer position.
When the elevator returns to the line receiving position, the lever 18 returns, by pivoting, to the non-operating position., Releasing the lug 19 and allowing the clutch 11 to be re-engaged in such a manner. to re-establish the drive connection with the tape feed mechanism.
The mechanism of the machine described so far is. known.
From the foregoing, it is obvious that the composition of the line begins again as soon as the assembly elevator 3 returns to the line reception position, although the delivery carriage 7 may be in the standby position, in being able to deliver the line previously composed to the vertical transporter only when the latter has delivered a line which is still previous. The embodiment of the machine shown in the drawing is arranged so that restarting of the tape and, consequently, of the line composition, when casting very long lines, is delayed until the delivery trolley 7 has completed its full operating cycle. and either returned to its right or line receiving position.
To do this, a cam 25, wedged on the shaft 8, controls the pivoting of a small lever 26 arranged vertically and mounted on a console 27 fixed to the left side of the keyboard while looking at the drawing. The lever 26 controls the transverse movement of a long horizontal bar 28 extending over the entire width of the keyboard, by means of a small angled lever 29, pivoting at 29a. on the left side of the keyboard and including. the short arm is articulated on the left end of the bar 28. The large arm of the lever 29 bears on the free lower end chi lever 26 with which it is held in engagement by a small tension spring 30 connecting these two parts .
When the lever 9 turns counterclockwise to bring the delivery truck to the line delivery position, the. cam 25 also pivots on the same shaft, leaving lever 26 to rotate under the action of spring 30 in an anti-clockwise direction. The upper edge of the long arm of the lever 29 is curved such that the counterclockwise rotation of the lever 20 allows a clockwise rotation of the lever 29, under the action of the lever. spring 30, thereby causing a certain transverse displacement of the bar 28 to the left.
Move. of bar 28 controls the operation of an electrical circuit which, in turn, prevents the ribbon from advancing. The right end of the bar 28 is constantly engaged with an arm 31a of a control switch 31, which is held open by the bar 28 when in its extreme right position shown in FIG. 1. The movement to the left of the bar 28, carried out as said above, closes the switch 31 (fig. 3), which allows the current to pass from a battery 33 into an electromagnet 3 4 which , when energized, actuates lever 18 which, as described above, stops the advance of the tape.
However, in the current case, it should be noted that the lever 18 has been actuated beforehand at the end of the composition of the. line, so that the real role of the electromagnet 34 is to hold the lever in the. position where it was brought, even after the return of the elevator 3, moment. to which the. composition would restart normally. The circuit remains closed until the delivery carriage has returned to its position for receiving the lines, and the cam 25 returns the bar 28 to its right position, by reopening the switch 31, and then the tape can start again. to advance.
To make it possible to put the delay mechanism in the operating position or to make it inoperative at will, a switch 36 is interposed in the circuit. Normally, this switch is closed, putting the device in working order, only during the casting of very long lines, in which case there is to be fear of exhaustion of the. reserve of dies in a given channel, and it is opened when casting lines of medium length.
