40. <I>LU fiche</I> d'enregistrement.
On a. donc 21 poinçons.

68 (flg. 7).
lllécanisme <I>de</I> poinçonnage.
.Mécanisme automatique <I>de</I> commande <I> de</I> saut <I>dit chariot.</I>
Mécanisme <I>automatique de commande</I> <I>de répétition.</I>
D</I> (fig.
Mécanisme <I>d'avance pour la</I> fiche modèle.
<I>Schéma</I> électrique.
Machine for punching recording cards. The object of the invention is a machine for punching recording cards each comprising several data reception sections, these sections each having several columns and being arranged one above the other.
The machine which is the subject of the invention is characterized by a row of punches, by a row of feelers, by a carriage intended to support a recording card. and a punched sheet serving as a model, this carriage being movable so as to move the recording sheet facing the row of punches and the pattern sheet facing the row of feelers, by a mechanism for moving the carriage, by a corresponding set of keys.
each has a representation of a character, by devices sensitive to the actuation of one of said keys and to cause the punches, in a column of one of said sections, to perform a punch corresponding to the born action key, and. by devices simultaneously and jointly controlled by said feelers and. by the mechanism for moving the carriage, to cause the punches to make punchings in the corresponding column of each of the other sections, to provide at least one copy of the data held in the corresponding positions of the model sheet.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine forming the subject. of the invention. The machine shown is used to punch registration cards of the type with several sections, these cards being conveyed one by one, from a supply magazine to a row of punches, in return for these cards. pass, step by step. Means are provided for punching selected data using keys in a first section, when the card passes opposite the row of punches, and, if the data is to be punched in a second section of this card, that -ci is withdrawn and is routed a second time opposite these punches to receive this data.
Similarly, if a third section of the card is also to receive data, the card is pulled out a second time to be routed a third time past the punches and to receive data in its third section.
A model form containing data to be reproduced in each of the registration forms is also provided. This model file controls the punching of the data that it carries in all the sections or planes, during the punching commanded by the keys of the. first of these sections. Selectively installable controls are provided, depending on whether the plugs are to be punched under control of the keys in one, two or three of their sections to control removal. automatic of these files when more than one section must be punched and then to delay the delivery of a new file from the store.
Means. Are also provided for setting up control members, for the advance called column jump of the machine, for copying and for punching under control of the keys, for each separate section. These control units are. brought into play during the operation of the machine relating to the associated sections.

Fig. 41 is a plan view corresponding to FIG. 40. <I> LU file </I> registration.
The registration form. that the machine shown is intended to punch is shown at the top of FIG. 38. As shown in this figure, this sheet includes five sections or planes designated respectively by A, B, <I> C, D </I> and F, each of these planes having seven horizontal rows of punching positions, denoted by X, Y, Z, 0, 1, 3, 5, respectively. The sheet has 60 vertical columns, so that we can therefore punch up to 300 characters on this form.
In the vast majority of commercial applications, generally three plans are. sufficient to record all the necessary data, three plans of 60 columns each allowing to record 180 characters in as many different recording positions. The machine shown comprises a row of punches which extend through the three lower planes A, B and C, these punches being spaced so as to correspond to the punching positions of the plug. We have. therefore 21 punches.
The card is first moved against these punches, and the set of seven punches associated with a chosen one of the three planes A, B or C is actuated to punch data in that plane. The card is then pulled back and it is moved a second time opposite the punches, while the seven punches of the group associated with one or the other of the two remaining planes are actuated to punch the chosen data in the plane. associated with this group. Finally, after the plug has been withdrawn a second time, it is moved a third time opposite the punches, while the group of punches associated with the third plane is actuated.
A model sheet is placed in a reading station provided for this. effect, and this card is provided with punchings that must be repeated in each of the cards routed opposite the row of punches. In the machine described with reference to the drawing, the arrangement is such that all of the data to be repeated is punched into the card during its first movement opposite the row of punches. This first movement is called the first pass.
The second displacement of the card opposite the punches is called second pass and similarly the third displacement is called third pass, so that, during the first pass of the cards, all the data supplied under control of the model card are punched, regardless of. the plane in which this data is. contained. Thus, for example, in FIG. 38, the three fields of the form designated by REPETITION are punched during the first pass.
The punches are carried out in the seven punching positions of the different planes, in accordance with the following code

Thus, the X punch is actuated to record in the position corresponding to 5, the Y punch is actuated to record in the position corresponding to 3, and the Z punch is actuated to record in the corresponding position. dant to 1 and so on.
In what follows, the mechanical assemblies which comprise the machine shown will first of all be described to explain their arrangement and their operation, and then a description will be given of the electrical diagram of the machine, while highlighting the following which the operations are carried out for the particular example shown in the. fig. 38.
Alphabetical keyboard.
The machine shown comprises a keyboard which is shown in the lower part of FIG. 1 and in fig. 30, the keys 10 of this keyboard being arranged in a conventional manner to be actuated by a typist. This keyboard includes additional keys, designated respectively Libq Rep, <I> Jump, </I> 5, X, Y and Z. These keys are located in the lower right corner, and the last four aforementioned keys are hatched to distinguish them from normal keyboard keys with the same signs.
As can be seen in fig. 3.1, each of the keys 10 is arranged so that it can be moved vertically and is normally kept pressed upwards by a spring 11. When one of these keys 10 is pressed, it switches an angled lever 12 and thus pulls a connecting rod 13 to the left.
A spacing key 10a co also operates with an angled lever and with a connecting rod 13, so that, when any of these keys is actuated, it moves the associated connecting rod 13, with the exception of the key. 10 corresponding to REPETITION which is arranged, as can be seen in the diagram of FIG. 39, to close a pair of contacts 14 when actuated.
Each connecting rod 13 has a lateral projection 15 (FIG. 30) at its free end, this projection being engaged in a notch 16 of a latch 17 (see FIG. 31). This lock has a notch 18 which rests on a fixed cross member 19, and it is pivoted at 20 to a vertical sliding member 21. Thus, as can be seen in FIG. 34, the lock 17 is used to hold the member 21 in its upper position, against the action of a spring 22.
The actuation of any key 10 or 10a (the REPEAT key excepted) moves the associated connecting rod 13 to the left, as shown in FIG. 31, and this connecting rod engages with one of the edges of the notch 16 to tilt the corresponding latch 17 in the opposite direction to that of clockwise and to release it from the cross member 19.
The spring 22 then pushes the corresponding sliding member 21 downwards, into the position shown in FIG. 32, the notch 18 of the lock passing to the left of the cross member 19 and coming to rest against this cross member, under the influence of a spring 23 compressed between the sliding member 21 and the lock 17. The sliding members 21 are each provided with a series of notches 2-1, inside which extend extensions 25 of a set of ten plates 26.
Each of the plates 26 is secured to a rod 27 (Fig. 35) pivoted in two side plates 28. When a sliding member 21 is lowered, the upper edge of its notch or one of its notches presses on the 'one or more of the extensions 25 to tilt the rods 27 associated with each of these extensions. In fig. 35, the rods 27 are designated respectively by 5, 3, 1, 0, <I> Z, Y, X, </I> KB, SAUT and LIB, and the extensions 25 are arranged in combinations, so that when a key corresponding to a determined character is.
actuated, the rods 27 corresponding to the combination indicated in the table above of this key are tilted. For example, if the key A is actuated, its sliding member 21 engages with extensions extending from the rods 5, 3, 1 and X, to rotate the rods of this combination. Similarly, the other characters selectively tilt the stems and, looking at fig. 35, it can be seen that the rods 27 of a combination of rods corresponding to each character rotate in accordance with said table.
For special characters, such as asterisks, apostrophes, etc., the movement key is operated as in normal typing, and this key rotates the X rod while the character key swings the other rods to be ordered.
The rod 27 corresponding to the frame of keys KB is provided with an extension 25 corresponding to each of the positions, except for DISPLACEMENT, so that when any sliding member 21 is actuated, it causes the rod 27 of KB to tilt. in addition to the rods corresponding to the code. The JUMP and RELEASE keys rock separate, correspondingly designated rods 27.
As can be seen in Figs. 31, 32 and 34, each sliding member 21 is connected to a lever 29, pivoted at 20 and adjacent to the latch 17 of this. organ. This lever is tensioned by a spring and it takes the position shown in FIG. 32, when the sliding member is. lowered, its upper end extending slightly above the left edge of the notch 16. This lever is intended to prevent inadvertent repeated actuation in the event that the operator maintains the down button in such a position that when the latch 17 is returned upwards, it can engage with the projection 15 and be attracted to the left.
The lever 29 prevents such engagement from occurring by pushing the protrusion 15 upwards when it has not returned to its normal position and keeping this protrusion out of reach of the notch 16 until the notch and the projection have returned to the positions shown in FIG. 31.
The bolts 17 are locked together by locking discs 30 of known type, shown in FIGS. 30, 31 and 32 and only allow one lock to operate at a time, with the exception of those associated with the control keys. <B> DISPLACEMENT </B> which are not locked.
The sliding members are put back in place by a pair of electromagnets 31 (fig. 30 and 34), the armatures 32 of which are fixed to a rod 33 which, when it is attracted, raises a frame. 34 to make it engage with the ribs of the bolts 17 and to simultaneously raise and tilt the bolts, from the position shown in FIG. 32 in that shown in FIG. 31.
Each of the plates 26 and the associated rods 27 has a lever 35, extending rearwardly, and these levers are arranged in two vertical rows, in the vicinity of the ends of the rods (fig. 30 and 34), the levers 35 being . alternated so as to be better spaced.
Each lever 35 extends to below an insulated contact blade 36 (Fig. 33), normally isolated from a common conductor 37, so that when a rod is tilted, the associated lever 35 moves its blade. contact 36 to bring it into contact with the common conductor <B> 37. </B> Consequently, the contacts 36 and 37 are closed according to combinations corresponding to the arrangement of combinations of the extensions 25, shown in FIG. 35 and at the table above. These contacts close circuits to control punching operations, as will be explained later.
Mechanism <I> of </I> handling <I> sheets. </I> As can be seen in fig. 1, 2 and 6, the cards to be punched are placed in a hopper 38 from which they are conveyed one by one, from the bottom or the bottom 'a stack, by the pusher 39 which advances the card to a card holder trolley. The pusher 39 (see FIG. 8) is pivoted at 40 on a plate 42, a spring 41 biasing it slightly in the direction of clockwise. The plate 42 is folded back at its front end (fi, -. 2 and 6) to which it is fixed at the right end of a rack 43.
This rack is guided so as to be able to slide in a passage 44 provided for this purpose. It has key teeth at its lower edge, these teeth coming into engagement with a gear 45 (fig. 2 and 7), mounted to rotate freely. on an axis 47 and carrying a smaller one. gear 46 which it is integral with.
The axis 47 is driven to rotate by its motor 49, by means of a transmission worm screw and toothed wheel 48 (FIG. 2). When the engine is running, shaft 47 rotates a clutch drive ratchet wheel 50 (Fig. 7) which is pinned to. this tree.
An eliquet 51, pivoted at 52 to a cam 53, is located in the plane of the drive ratchet 50. The free end of the pawl 51 normally abuts against the end of a frame 54, pivoted at 55. When an electromagnet 56 is energized, the armature 54 is drawn into the position shown in FIG. 10, thus releasing the pawl 51 (fig. 7) and allowing it to rotate in a counterclockwise direction around the pivot 52, under the influence of a res sort 57.
A single tooth 51a of this pawl then engages with the ratchet 50 which drags it around in order to rotate counterclockwise.
The armature 54 of the electromagnet normally engages with a lever 58, pi voted at 59, to maintain this lever in the position shown in FIG. 7, in which it maintains closed a pair of contacts 60 and open another pair of contacts 61 (FIG. 10). When the electromagnet 56 is energized, it releases the lever 58 so that the latter can tilt, under the effect of a common blade of the contacts 60 and 61 pressing on an extension 58a of this lever. The lever 58 then passes from the position shown in FIG. 7 in that shown in. fig. 10.
The ratchet 50 and the ratchet. 51 being. coupled, as explained above, the cam 53 rotates counterclockwise, driving with it a pin 62 to which is pivoted a connecting rod 63 (fig. 2) . The opposite end of this connecting rod is. piv otée in 64 to a body 65, which is. resiliently connected to a toothed sector 66, pivoted on an axis 67 (Fig. 7).
Sector 66 meshes with gear 46, so gears 46 and 45 are. driven by the mechanism described fae.on to rotate counterclockwise and. then return by turning in the direction of clockwise, during due the cam 53 performs a complete revolution. The cam 53 carries a finger. 68 (flg. 7). Once this cam has made a half turn, this finger engages with the left end of the lever 58 to tilt it and to bring it back to its position shown in FIG. 7, thus reopening the contacts 61.
When the full turn of the cam 53 is completed, the pawl 51 engages with the free end of the frame 54, which is then not attracted, and the tooth. 51a is thus disengaged from the drive ratchet 50, all the members being returned to their starting position shown in. fig. 7.
It will be noted that, during. the first half of the turn made by the cam 53, the sector 66 drives the gear 45 (fig. 2 and 7) counterclockwise and then, during the second half of this turn, this sector returns this gear to its initial position. Consequently, gear 15 transmits reciprocating motion to rack 43 and clamp 39, to advance a new plug from hopper 38.
As seen in Figs. 2 and. 8, the support plate 42 carries a console 70 for each of the two elements that the pusher 39 comprises. A latch 71, held by a spring, is pivoted at 72 on this console. This lock comprises an upper extension which extends in a slot formed in the front wall of the pusher 39, so that, when the pusher is tilted in the opposite direction to that of the needles of a clock around its pivot 40, the latch 71 the hand is held tilted to allow it to slide without advancing a plug from the hopper. To tilt the pusher, a solenoid 73 is mounted so as to tilt a lever 74, in the form of a <B> U, </B> fixed to a rod 75, against the action of a spring 76.
Two levers 71 (Fig. 6) are provided, one for each element of the pusher, and when the solenoid 73 is energized, it causes these levers to swing counterclockwise. The lower arms of the levers 74 serve to release the locks 71, when the latter return to the right after having carried out a movement with the pusher.
When the pusher 39 is operative, it advances a plug from the hopper 38 to the position designated by the reference numeral 80 in FIG. 1. In this position, this card is received by a card cart. This carriage comprises a rack 81 (Fig. 6) mounted to slide and from the left end of which extends a plug stop 82, while a member 83, serving to push the plug, extends to from its right end. The member 83 is pivoted at 84 (Fig. 36), so that when the plug is moved towards the. left from hopper 38, it passes under member 83, causing it to tilt to let it pass.
When the rear edge of the plug has advanced enough, the member 83 falls behind this edge to subsequently serve to advance the plug to the left, from the position shown in FIG. 1.
As will be explained later, this advance towards the left of the card is carried out step by step, so as to present successively. the different columns of the. single row sheet of punches 85 (fig. 36). When the last column of the plug is in the punching position, the front edge of this plug is between these jaws of an ejector device generally designated by the number 86 (fig. 1, 6 and 9). These jaws are used to rotate the plug in an arc of a circle and in an anti-clockwise direction, according to fig. 9, to place it in a hopper 87 (fig. 1).
The carriage is operated as follows: The upper edge of the rack 43 (fig. 2 and 7) has toothing which meshes with a gear 88, mounted to rotate freely on a transverse shaft 90. A cam 89 is attached to this gear 88, so that, when the rack 43 slides, the gear 88 and the cam 89 turn first in the direction of clockwise, then in the opposite direction, when the rack 43 slides in the other way. An arm 91 is fixed to the shaft 90, and a pawl 92, held by a spring, is pivoted on this arm.
When the rack 43 is on the right, as in FIG. 7, Him. block 93 fixed to this rack by rivets engages a cam lever 94 and maintains this lever in the position shown, in which it prevents the pawl 92 from coming into engagement with the notch of the cam 89. When the rack 43 is moved to the left, gear 88 and cam 89 rotate clockwise, and block 93 moves away from lever 94 and allows it to rotate counterclockwise. clockwise. The pawl 92 then rotates and engages with the cam 89.
Because this pawl is pivotally mounted on the arm 91 which is fixed to the shaft 90, this shaft is then coupled to the cam 89 which does so. turn clockwise, as long as the rack 43 continues to move to the left. The various members described are dimensioned in such a way that the shaft 90 performs a complete rotation during the advance or stroke of the rack 43 and that, during the return stroke of this rack, the cam 89 turns in its direction. initial position, leaving the shaft 90 in its forward position.
In the vicinity of the end of the stroke, the block 93 lifts the lever 94 to bring it back to the position shown in FIG. 7, and the pawl 92 is thus driven to rotate and is disengaged from the cam 89.
During subsequent punching operations, shaft 90 is advanced step by step counterclockwise, while cam 89 remains stationary, as lever 94 keeps pawl 92 away from it. this cam.
As can be seen in fig. 24 and 25, the opposite end of the shaft 90 carries a gear 95 which meshes with the teeth of the lower edge of the rack 81 of the carriage. Thus, when the rack 43 is moved to the left, the rack 81 of the carriage moves the stop 82 and the pusher 83 in the opposite direction, towards the position shown in FIG. 1, in which this stopper and this pusher receive the plug presented by the pusher 39.
The rack 43 returns to its starting position without the rack 81 accompanying it, this rack then being advanced step by step during the punching operations, to the position in which the plug is finally. ejected.
As shown in fig. 2, the cam 53 co operates with a roller of a follower arm 96, tensioned by a spring and pivoted at 97. At its upper end, the arm 96 is connected to a connecting rod 98 of which. the opposite end (FIG. 9) carries a plate 99, in which is formed a slot 100, provided to cooperate with a pin 101, fixed on a toothed sector 102. During the first half-turn of the cam 53, that - this rotates the arm 96 clockwise, and the connecting rod 98 is. pulled to the right. Under the effect.
of the spring 103 'fixed to the. pin 101, the sec tor 102 is driven to rotate clockwise and in turn turns a pinion 103 counterclockwise. This pinion is fixed to a rod 104 to which the jaws of the ejector device, generally designated by the reference numeral 86, are fixed. Thus, the rotation of the pinion 103 rotates the jaws and the pinch plug therein, to deposit this plug in the hopper 87. The way in which the jaws grip the plug and reopen to release it is well known, so well that it is not necessary to describe this operation in detail here.
As shown in fig. 9, the sector 102 has a lateral projection 105 cooperating with an armature lever 106, pivoted at 107, so that when an electromagnet 108 is not energized, the lever 106 engages with the projection 105 for lock the sector 102 and prevent it from functioning under the effect of the res out 103, this spring. being tense and. yielding instead of attracting the sector. The electromagnet 108 is energized when it is necessary to eject a plug, and it is not energized when it is desired to prevent the ejection of a plug to allow it to remain on the carriage and to perform a return movement with it to be punched in a following shot.
In the position shown in FIG. 9, the pin 109 goes. engage with a lever 110 to rotate it and to open a pair of contacts 111, whose functions will be. described later in connection with the diagram. electric machine.
Mechanism <I> of </I> punching.
The punches 85 (fig. 11 and 36) are arranged in a row comprising 21 punches spaced so as to correspond to the spacing of the punching positions in the three planes A, B and C of the sheet shown in fig. . 38. Each punch is split in the vicinity of its upper end to receive the rounded end of a lever 112, pivoted at 113 and biased in the direction of clockwise by a spring. A connecting member 114 is pivoted at 115 to the lever 112 and normally occupies the position shown in FIG. 11. This member has a slot 116 in which a pin 117 of a lever 118 pivoted at 118a is engaged.
A spring. 119 pushes normally and hand holds lever 118 in the position shown in fig. 11, the end of this lever abutting against a metal plate 119a, lined with a sound-damping material, and the member 114 being held by the pin 117 in the position shown in FIG. 11.
A punch selector electromagnet 120 is provided for each punch. When this electromagnet is energized, it attracts an armature 121 and turns the lever 118, by means of a connecting rod 122, to bring it into the position shown in FIG. 36, and to rotate the member 114 at an angle such that its slot 116 comes to take a vertical position.
This movement brings a seat 114a of the member 114 into vertical alignment with the lower edge of a punch bar 123, so that when lowered, this bar engages this seat, to push the member 114. down, as well as the associated lever 112 and the punch 85, and to bring them into the position shown in FIG. 36.
Punch bar 123 (see fig. 12) has pins <B> 125 </B> at its ends, and these pins can slide in guides 126, arranged to oscillate vertically in the frame of the machine. The lower ends of the guides are interconnected by a return bar 127, and their upper ends are pivoted to connecting rods 128, re linked to arms 129, including. one is attached to a shaft 130 and the other to a pivot 131.
A connecting rod 132 interconnects the connecting rods 128 to ensure that the latter remain parallel, and the operation is such that, when the shaft 130 rotates clockwise, as shown in FIG. 12, the kneepads formed by the arms 129 and the connecting rods 128 begin by straightening up and by forcing the guides 1 \ Z6 downwards and that, after reaching a neutral point, they then flex to withdraw these guides towards the bottom. high.
When the shaft 130 rotates in the opposite direction, during a reverse movement, the action of these knee pads is reversed and they straighten again when the arms 129 and the connecting rods 128 return to the position shown in the. fig. 12.
The bar 123 has a side projection 133 (Figs. 12, 13, 131 and 36) which lies in the plane of an upper stop screw 134 and a lower stop screw 135. As the bar moves towards At the top, the projection 133 engages the upper stopper 134, to rotate the bar 123 counterclockwise, against the action of a plunger spring 136.
In its upper position, the bar 123 is therefore arranged as shown in FIGS. 11 and 13y, its upper edge being to the left of a horizontal arm of the lever 118. When the bar is moved downwards, its projection 133 engages with the stopper 135 and rotates it into the position shown in FIG. fig. 36, in which the upper edge of this bar is located below the horizontal arm of lever 118.
As the bar 123 moves upward from this position, it therefore first engages and rotates the lever 118, thereby returning the member 114 to its initial position, this action di recte of the bar continuing until the projection 133, cooperating with the stop 134, has rotated the bar 123 and has released it from under the lever 118. This release occurs very close to the end of the stroke towards the top of the bar, so as to ensure a complete and effective return of the lever 118 and of the member 114, the armature 121 being at the same time returned due to its connection with the lever 118 by the connecting rod 122.
The upward movement of the return bar -127 which accompanies this operation directly recalls the levers 112 and their punches 85 as well as the members 114. Thus, the bar 123 has the effect of recalling the various members to their initial angular positions. , and bar 127 makes a vertical recall towards. the top of the organ 114, these two movements being combined.
As can be seen in fig. 12 and 13, the shaft 130 carries an arm 137, connected to. a vertical rod 138, the lower end of which (see FIG. 2) is connected to an arm 139 of a shaft 140. Thanks to this connection, the drive of the mechanism described is obtained from devices which will be now describe. As seen in fig. 2, the motor shaft 49 carries an extension which drives a screw 141 meshing, with a toothed wheel 142 fixed to a shaft 1-13 (fig. 15), this shaft carrying a toothed wheel 144.
Four pawls 145, pivoted on pins 146 and pushed against wheel 144 by springs 147, are. arranged in the plane of this wheel 144 (see fig. 17). The pins 14.6 and sup blocks carrying the springs 147 are fixed to a cam 148, mounted to rotate freely on the shaft 143 and integral with a second cam 149. These two cams are complementary (see fig. 14) and cooperate with rollers of a le vier 150, fixed to the shaft 1.40.
As can be seen in fig. 14, an eighth of a turn of the cams 148 and 149 turns the shaft 140 clockwise, and this movement is transmitted to the punch bar 1_3 through the arm 139 (fig. 2). ), rod 138 and shaft 130 (fig. 12 and 1.3). The bar 123 is thus animated with a reciprocating movement, as is the rap pel bar 127, to perform a punching operation.
A second eighth of a turn of the cams 148 and 149 returns the shaft 140 to its original position, and this return movement commands a second punching operation, so that the machine performs one punching operation for every eighth of a revolution. cams 148 and 149. The movement of an eighth of a turn of these cams is produced as follows: As seen in figs. 14 and 15, shaft 143 carries at one end thereof a toothed wheel 151, from which four fingers 152 extend through cam 149 and below pawls 145, to hold normally. these pawls released from the wheel 144, against the action of the springs 145.
Cam 149 carries a retaining ring 153 having teeth, one of which engages detent 154, to hold the cams and prevent them from turning counterclockwise. The wheel 151 is freely mounted on the shaft 143 and is prevented from rotating clockwise by the engagement of one of its teeth with an armature 155 of an electromagnet. 156. This frame is pivoted to rotate freely about an axis 157 and it is held against the wheel 151 by a spring.
When the electromagnet 156 is energized, the wheel <B> 151 </B> is released and the springs 147 re push the associated pawls 145, these in turn pressing against the fingers 152 to rotate these fingers and the wheel 151 clockwise and to allow the pawl 145 to engage with the teeth of the wheel 144, driven by a uniform rotational movement. Cams 148 and 149 are. thus trained. If the electromagnet 156 ceases to be energized before the next tooth of wheel 151 engages the armature, that armature is in position to stop this tooth and to hold the fingers 152 and prevent them. turn clockwise more than an eighth of a turn.
The drive wheel 144 therefore drives the pawls 145 against the fingers 152 and is released from these pawls after an eighth of a turn when the trigger 154 drops behind the tooth. next to the ring 153 to keep the various components in disengaged position. The mechanism described constitutes, therefore, what one could. call up a clutch for an eighth of a turn.
As seen in fig. 12, the guide 126 on the left carries a console 158 which, through an insulating plate 159, actuates a pair of contacts 160 to let them close when the guide goes down and to reopen them when it comes back up. . Exhaust mechanism.
As shown in Figs. 12 and 22, the console 158, which is moved back and forth for each punching operation, carries a bolt 161 having a hole to which a connecting rod 162 is articulated by a pivot. This connecting rod is connected to an angled lever 163, pivoted on an axis 164 and bearing. a pin 165 moving in an elongated hole of a feed pawl 166. A member 167, also pivoted on the axis 164, engages with the lever 163 via a spring and screw connection 168, so that this member oscillates with the angled lever 163 when the console 158 is driven by a reciprocating movement. The member 167 carries a pin 169 which extends in a notch of a retaining pawl 170, rotated at 171.
Therefore, as the connecting rod 162 moves downward, the member 167 rotates clockwise and rotates the pawl 170 to engage it with a tooth of the rack 81 of the rack. cart. Simultaneously, the pawl 166 is moved and is released from this rack. This last pawl is mounted with play on the axis 164, so that when it is moved and disengaged from the teeth of the cage, a spring 172 attracts it to the left, moving it a small distance and l 'Ame ning in position to engage with the next tooth of the rack, when the various members of the mechanism are rape les by the upward return movement of the connecting rod 162.
The rack 81 is drawn to the right in the usual way, as shown in FIG. 22, by a gear 173 connected to a spring drum (not shown), in which a spring is wound when the carriage is moved to the left (with respect to fig. 22) and unwinds as this carriage. step by step or escape to the right.
A lever 174 abuts against the left edge of the stepping pawl 166, and this lever is arranged to be driven to rotate and open contacts 175, as this pawl is released to move toward the left. left. These contacts close when the pawl engages with a new tooth of the rack 81 and is brought back to the right by this rack.
.Automatic mechanism <I> of </I> command <I> of </I> jump <I> said cart. </I>
As we can. see it in fig. 23, a console 176 fixed to the frame of the machine carries a finger 178, pivoted to this console at 177, the right end of this finger extends to below the feed pawl 166 (fig. 22 ), and the operation is such that when this finger is driven to rotate counterclockwise, as shown in FIG. 23, he lifts the ratchet 166 and releases it from the mesh cage 81 to free it and to allow it to move to the right, dragged by the gear 173,
itself driven by the spring drum. When the finger 178 returns to position, it allows the pawl 166 to engage the teeth of the rack under the action of its spring 172, to stop the advance of this rack.
The mechanism we have. describe ensures <B> He., </B> automatic finger click <B> 178 </B> to cause a so-called jump effect, the. lère rack of the carriage being in any selected position and such a jump may end at any subsequent selected position of the carriage. As shown in fig. 23, a rod 179, mounted to oscillate on fixed consoles at a restricted angle, carries a lever 180 to which is fixed a pin 181, which is located below a cam face <B> 1.82 </B> of the lower edge of finger 178.
A retaining roller 183 is attracted by a spring against the upper edge of the lever 180, to hold this lever in the position shown or in a position offset a few degrees clockwise, the pin 181 being then in alignment with the most protruding part of the cam surface 182 by means of which the finger 178 is raised counterclockwise, in its so-called jump position.
A vertical plate 181, protruding, is. attached to the rod 179 (see fig. 26, 27, 40 and 41). This plate runs parallel to. the carriage rack 81, over a length corresponding to. the maximum amplitude chi displacement of this rack. The 1st rack 81 carries a bracket 185 (see fig. 29) and a sleeve 185a (fig. 26 and 27) is attached to this bracket. A short rod 186 is pivoted in this sleeve, in which it can smooth neck with an organ 187 which it carries at one of its ends.
As seen in fig. 29, the organ 187 has extensions 188, forming. of the jaws and surrounding the top edge of the plate 181, so that when the rack of the carriage moves in one direction or the other, the jaws 188 slide along the plate 181, and if the rod 186 rotates during this displacement, the in <iehoires 188 font. also. turn plate 184 and. rod 179.
The member 187 has a pair of side projections 189 (Figs. 26 and. 27) which extend parallel to the rod 186 and which are respectively arranged under internal members. <B> 1908 </B> and 190P. It will be noted that when organ 190S is. lowered, organ 187 is. driven to rotate counterclockwise, as shown in figs. 29 and 37 ", to turn the rod 179 clockwise and to lift the finger 178 (fig. 23) to its jump position.
If the 190P organ is. then lowered to. in turn, the member 187 pivots in the opposite direction (Fig. 37ü) to allow the finger. 178 to return to its normal position or punching position.
The means serving. at. lower the intermediate organs <B> 1908 </B> and 1.90P comprise, a support 191, to which are fixed three bars 192, angularly spaced, designated respectively by A, B and C. Sixty slots 193 (fig. 26) are formed transversely in this support, one of these slots corresponding to each of the columns of the sheet. A 194 cava lier can. be inserted into each of these slots, as shown in fig. 29. These jumpers are elastic and are designed to be slid over one of the bars 192 and to close behind the inner edge of this bar on which they are thus held in place.
The lower end of the jumper has a head protruding from one side and out of the bar 192, so that when such a jumper is placed on one of the bars 1.92 in the position shown at. fig. 29a, its, head is aligned with the organ 190P, and that when this same jumper is turned over and put in place, as shown in FIG. 296, its head is aligned with the 190S organ.
(xrace to this arrangement, when the cart mesh. 81 advances, it brings with it the console 185 (fig. 26) and the organs 190S and 190P, these being capable of coming into engagement with fixed jumpers 194 dis placed on the central bar 192 or bar B, and to be tilted by these jumpers to lift the feed pawl 166 and release it from the rack or to drop it, depending on the positions of the jumpers along the bar which determine of course the points in the path of the carriage at which such operations must be carried out.
As said above, when more than one plane is to be punched, the plug is. held on the cart. to perform two or three passes during the first of which data may be punched in plane A, data may be punched under key control in plane B during the second pass and a third series of data may also be punched punched under command of the keys in the third plane during the third pass. Different jump conditions may be necessary for each of these planes, and it is for this reason that three bars 192, designated by r1, B and C are provided,
these bars corresponding respectively to the planes d, B and. C. The central bar carries jumpers distributed in accordance with the conditions required for plane A. and the support occupies the position shown in fig. 29 during the first pass. For the second step wise, this support 191 is rotated in the opposite direction to that of clockwise, as shown in FIG. 29, to bring the bar B in the position occupied in this figure by the bar A. For the third step wise, the support is. rotated in the. opposite direction to bring the -bar C in the position occupied by the bar .l in FIG. 29.
The mechanism serving to thus move the support 191 is shown in FIGS. 26, 27 and 28, in which the central bar 192 extends from the support 191 into a slot presented by a forked lever 196, fixed to an arm 197. This arm is connected to the levers 199B and 199C by a pair of connecting rods 198, these levers being respectively pivoted on fixed axes 200B and 200C and being connected by connecting rods 201B and 201C to solenoid frames 202B and 202C.
A slider 203 is held by a spring 204 against the levers 199B and 199C, to pull the connecting rods 198 in opposite directions and to maintain the arm 197 and the support 191 in their central position, the central bar 192 A being located. in operative position.
When solenoid 202B is energized, it rotates lever 199B clockwise, as shown in Fig. 128, and moves arms 197 and 196 in a counterclockwise direction. to bring bar B (fig. 29) into the operative position with respect to components 190S and 1.90P. Likewise, when the solenoid 202C is energized, the lever 199C rotates counterclockwise to move the arms 197 and 196 clockwise and to bring the bar C into its position. operative position.
When the solenoids are not. more excited, the spring 204 and the sliding member 203 return the various parts of the mechanism to their normal positions, shown in FIG. 28, in which the bar A is in the operative position.
The support 191 is removable and can be separated from the machine to facilitate insertion, removal or modification of the arrangement of the jumpers it carries. It is held in place by a fixed pivot 205, engaging with a hole made in its left end (fig. 26 and 27) and by a plunger 206, pressed by a spring and having a bearing surface which engages with it. a hole made in the right end of this support (fig. 24 and 25). The plunger 206 is capable of being withdrawn behind, inside a fixed block 207, to allow the support 191 to be detached.
A jump electromagnet 221, shown in FIG. 23, is designed to: rotate its frame 222, when it is energized, and to apply it against a projection of the lever 180, to rotate the rod <B> 1.69 </B> and. lift finger 178 to its jump position.
As seen in Figs. 26 and 27, the rod 186 has a pair of collars 21.2, between which extends a pin 213 (see also fig. 40 and 41). This pin is solid with an angled lever 209, pivoted in 208 to the console 185.
When the carriage advances to the left during the punching operation, the angled lever 209 occupies the position shown in fig. 41, in which a projection 209a of this lever is retained behind a notch 211a of a latch 211, pivoted at 210 to the sole 185. The arm 189 of the member 187, which co-operates with the member 190P, has an upper part and a lower part; while the arm <B> 189, </B> designed to cooperate with the 190S body, only has an upper part.
The various parts being in the position shown in fig. 40, the upper parts of the two arms 189 are located below the respective intermediate members during the advance of the carriage, and the member 187 will be dragged to rotate in accordance with the position of the jumpers 194 placed on the path. of the aforementioned intermediate bodies.
When the carriage reaches its so-called last column position, that is to say when the last column, if it has been punched, has moved one step beyond the row of punches, a finger 214 (fig. 41) of the latch 211 abuts against a stop screw 215, to rotate the latch and to release the angled lever 209. This lever then rotates in the position shown in FIG. 27, under the action of a spring. 216. The rod 186 slides to the right in the sleeve 185a, driven by the pin 213 and by the collars 212.
This rod thus brings the member 187 which it carries into the position shown in FIG. 26, in which the member 190P rests with its free end on the lower part of the associated arm 189.
The console 185, shown in particular in FIGS. 27 and 37a, has a notch 217 through which the jaws 188 extend. This notch is formed so as to present a projection 218, extending between the jaws 188 and, forming a cam. The parts of the mechanism being in the position shown in figs. 41 and 37a, this cam leaves the jaws 188 free to pivot.
However, when the grout jaws feel with the member 187 to reach the position shown in FIGS. 27 and 37 ", the cam surface of the projection 218 engages the jaws and rotates them counterclockwise, as shown in Figs. 29 and 37", to rotate the jaws. plate 184 and rod 179 and bring them into their jump position, the feed pawl being raised and the hand held free from the rack 81. When the carriage is brought back, this jaw position remains.
It will be noted that in this case, the jump riders, as they pass opposite the intermediate members, have no effect on the mechanism described, because the members of this mechanism are in the position of jump .. These jumpers are. also ineffective, because the member 190P is not engaged with the upper part of the associated arm 189 and that, when this member rests on the lower part of this lever, it is located below the jumpers and out of reach of these, as can be seen in FIG. 26.
When the carriage. approaches its starting or first column position, the end 209b of the angled lever 209 (fig. 25 and 41) engages a fixed plate 219 which rotates it and brings it into its locked position, shown in fig. 41, in which it remains until it is. again released, at the last column position. This lock brings back simultaneously. the organ 187 in its position shown at. fig. 41, by means of the pin 213 of the elbow block 209.
The carriage is then in its first column position and, if a stopper box 194 is in the corresponding position. in column 1 it is directly. above the contact end of the 190P member. Consequently, when the arms 189 are moved to the left, the end of the organ 190P slides along a ramp, from the lower part to the upper part of the associated arm 189.
The member 190P being prevented from rotating by a rider, the arm 189 is forced downwards, so as to rotate the member 187 and bring its jaws 188 to their stop position, so that the pawl 16f > is lowered and engages the rack 81, to stop it in its position as the first column when the drive device behind this rack is disengaged.
If no stop jumper. 19-1 is not put in place in the position corresponding to column 1, the displacement of the member 187 and the arms 189 to the left is simply, slightly rotates the member 190P and the jaws 188 are retained; in their jump position, the pawl 166 being kept out of reach of the rack 81. Consequently, when the rack is released from its rear drive device, the carriage. advances immediately, in uninterrupted motion until a stop rider is encountered. and releases the pawl 166 to stop this carriage.
Mechanism <I> automatic control </I> <I> repeat. </I>
As can be seen in fig. 6, 18 and 19, the rack of the carriage 81 carries, to. its right end, a console 223 which is consequently moved and which follows the back and forth movement of the rack. Four pairs of intermediate members designated by 225ST and 225SP are pivoted on rods 22.1 that this console carries. These four pairs are. identical, so that it will be sufficient to describe only one.
The intermediate members of the same pair are both curved outwards at 226 (see also fig. 37) and these curved parts come below the fingers 227 of a member 229, pivoted at 228 at the end of the console 223. The or gane 229 has jaw-shaped lower parts which overlap a pla that 230, fixed to a rod 231 which extends all along the path of the carriage. Thus, as the carriage rack moves forward and backward, the jaw-shaped portions of the member 229 slide along their respective plates 230 (see also Fig. 20).
In fig. 18, 19 and 37, it will be noted that the alternate pairs of intermediate members extend in opposite directions, so as to reduce the distances between them, so that their ends extending upwards are all in line and. are arranged on the path of jumpers 233, carried by bars 231, fixed to a support 235 (see fig. 20).
The support 235 is slit crosswise, in the same way as the support 191 for the jump bars, and the jumpers 233 are of the same shape as the jumpers 194 and can be inserted in these slots in two different ways, so that their heads is. likely to cooperate with one or <I> with </I> the other of the 225ST or 225SP intermediate bodies.
When the intermediate members move, driven by the rack, a jumper inserted in the slot corresponding to a column position causes the intermediate member to tilt when the latter comes opposite this jumper. This intermediate member in turn rotates the jaw-shaped portions of the member 229 associated with it, to rotate the plate 230 and 1a. corresponding rod 231.
Each of the rods 231 has an arm 236, mounted on its right-hand end (Figs. 21 and 37) and, when this rod rotates clockwise from a watch, as shown at. fig. 21, this arm rotates a lever 237, which moves contacts 238 and 239 into respective open and closed positions. These contacts control circuits which will be explained later with reference to the electrical diagram of the machine.
The four bars 231 are respectively designated by .1, B, <I> C and. D </I> (fig. 20) and the first three of these bars are associated with the corresponding planes of the card. Jumpers 233 are therefore placed on the bar A of the group of bars 231 in accordance with the repeat conditions for the plan A and so on. Jumpers are inserted on the D bar in accordance with the automatic spacing conditions, as will be explained in detail later.
The support 235 can be removed to facilitate the insertion of the jumpers 233. Its right end (fig. 18) is engaged in a slot of a member 240 and its left end (fig. 24) rests on a fixed console, to which it is fixed by a locking lever 242. To separate the support 235, the lever 242 is rotated clockwise, against the action of a spring 243, to release the end of left of this support which can then be slid out of the slot in member 240.
As can be seen in FIG. 21, the rod 231 on the left, associated with the bar D of the group of bars 234, has a lower projection on its finger 236, and this projection is arranged to cooperate with the frame 245 of an electromagnet 244. When this electromagnet is excited, it rotates the finger 236 and the rod 231 clockwise, so as to move the contacts 238 and 239 associated with this rod. When the support. 235 is in place, it engages with a pin 246 (fig. 21) and pushes this pin to open a pair of contacts 247.
Mechanism <I> in advance for the </I> model sheet. As can be seen in fig. 6, the consoles 185 and 223 which come and go with the plug carriage rack 81 are connected to each other by a bar 248, to which is fixed a plate 249 whose upper end rests against a rod 250 (see fig. . t). This plate is slotted to surround a hub 251 of a frame 252, so that this frame is moved along the rod 250, dragged by the rack 81. The frame 252 is. folded, as shown in fig. 4, so that frame arms extend above a table 253 on which it rests.
This table is designed to receive a model sheet 254 between pushers 255, as indicated in FIG. 6, so that this plug moves forward and backward with the carriage. Model sheet 2:51 is explored by a feeler device 256 (fig. 3) which passes through it. This member has the shape of a pinion or a star wheel pivoted on a lever 257. The model sheet comprises three planes corresponding to those of the sheet shown in FIG. 38 and each comprising corresponding punching positions. Twenty-one star wheels 256 are provided to cooperate with the twenty-one rows of punching positions of the template card.
When one of the star wheels meets a perforation, one of its teeth s @ v sinks in and allows the lever 257 to which it is attached to swing, so that a pair of contacts 259 is closed via a plunger. 258. This file analysis device is not in itself new.
Frame 260 (Fig. 3) extends below all levers 257. When an electromagnet 261 is not energized. a spring 262 swings this frame clockwise, to rotate the levers 257 and to lift the star wheels 256 above the plug. The star wheels are therefore only able to explore the plug when the electromagnet 261 is energized. This electromagnet then closes a pair of contacts 263, shown schematically in FIG. 3.
As shown in fig. 8, hopper contacts 264 are provided and are. arranged to be closed when the plugs are placed in the hopper 38 and to open when all these plugs have been withdrawn from this hopper. As can be seen in fig. 6, last column contacts 265 are arranged to close when the plug carriage escapes from its last column punching position, or when it passes through that position without stopping there, and to open. in all other carriage positions. The operation of these contacts is understandable, although they are only shown schematically.
As can be seen in Figs. 11 and 25, the finger. jump 178 rests by its end on a lever 266. This lever can turn, dragged by a rod 267, by an arm 268 and by a connecting rod 269 actuated by a release solenoid 120R. So when this electromagnet is. energized, the end of the finger 178 is lifted, and this finger raises the feed pawl 166 and disengages it from the. rack 81, to allow this rack to advance uninterruptedly.
<I> Example of </I> operation <I> of the machine. </I> The operation of the whole machine represented will be explained below to illustrate the way in which the various mechanisms described above are coordinated.
The plug shown in fig. 38 must be punched, various variable data must be punched in the fields designated by PERFORATION under the control of keys 10 designed to be operated by hand (fig. 30), and common data in front. be punched in the fields designated by REPETITION under the order of the model sheet 254 (fig. 5). This model sheet presents punchings in its corresponding fields. The fields designated by SAUT must be left blank and are automatically overridden.
In the assumed example, punching under command of the keys must be carried out in three planes <I> A, B </I> and C of the card, and the machine is consequently adjusted so as to make the card go through three passages opposite the punches. During the first of these passages, data is recorded on the card under command of the keys in the left field of its plane A, as well as in a second field of this plane, also designated by PERFORATION.
The card then goes back to perform a second pass of the rant in which data is punched under command of the keys in its plane B, data also being punched under command of the keys in its plane C during a third pass. All rehearsal data (for all three planes) is automatically punched during the first pass.
Four switches 300, 301, 302 and 303, shown in fig. 1 and 6 and also at the bottom of fig. 39 and 39b, are placed on the machine. Each of these switches has three active positions and one tripped position (shown in dotted lines). The switch 301 controls the punching by keys during the first pass and is set to a position A to indicate that the plane A should. be punched through during the first pass. Switch 302 controls key punching during the second pass and is set to <I> B </I> to indicate that the plan <I> B </I> must be punched during this second pass.
The switch 303 controls the stroke punch during the third pass and is set at C to indicate that the plane C is to be punched during the third pass. In summary, switches 301, 302, and 303 are set up in accordance with the plan to be punched through during each of the particular passes.
Switch 300 is an eject switch and controls the point at which the plug is to be ejected or the passage after which that plug is to be ejected. Thus, in the example considered, in which three planes are to be punched out by keys, the switch 300 is set in place on 3 to indicate that the card must be ejected after the completion of the third pass.
The stop jumpers support 191 (fig. 38) carries jumpers 194 of which. the heads (blackened to accentuate them) are directed upwards to command a jump and downwards to command a stop in each of the three planes. The installation of these jumpers is done according to the arrangement of the fields of the file and in accordance with certain rules which will be explained. A 194 jumper est. put in place, his head being turned to the side corresponding to a jump, in the column from which such a jump should occur, and a rider is put in place, with his head turned to the side corresponding to the stop, in the column after which the jump should end.
As has already been explained, the mechanism is constructed to automatically jump from the first column, or column N 1, without it being necessary to provide a jumper in the jump position. poïir this column. A stop jumper set up in column N 1 of plane A. makes this automatic jump from column N 1 ineffective, to allow punching by keys to start in this column of this plane.
The feed for plane A then continues under control of the keys up to column 24, from which the repetition begins and continues to. column 33, im punching by keys being at. again made from this column 33 to column 48. A jump rider is. inserted in column 49 to cause the start of a jump extending to the end of plane A.
In plan B, a stop jumper is inserted in column 1, so that punching can be done in the first columns, and a jump jumper is placed in column 7 to command a jump. extending to the end of plane B, the REPEAT field having been punched during the first pass.
In plan C, no stop jumper is provided in column 1, so that the plug immediately and automatically jumps to column 24, in which a stop jumper is inserted, and a punching by keys is performed from this column and up to column 37. A jump jumper is placed in column 37, so that the already punched REPEAT field of the form is skipped, this jump is extending to the end of plan C.
The repetition support 235 carries ca valiers 233 corresponding to the boundaries of the REPETITION fields of the three planes. Thus, a starting jumper is placed in the column corresponding to. the first repetition position and. a stop jumper is placed in the column corresponding to the position immediately following the last repetition position. For example, in the example considered, key jumpers start. are arranged respectively in the positions of columns 24, 17 and 37 of planes A, B and C, and stop jumpers are arranged in the positions of columns 33, -10 and 49 of these planes, in the same order.
The jumpers arranged on the bar D of the group of bars 23.1 of the support _35 command the automatic spacings and are arranged in accordance with the rules which will be described below.
To install these jumpers on bar D, it is first necessary to determine the. first column of the card that must be spaced, regardless of jumps or spacing under control of the keys, remembering that the movement of spacing or recalling back of the carriage is effected only under control of the keys or automatic spacing mechanism and that the repetition alone does not result in escaping.
Since all the repeating operations are carried out during the first pass, it is not necessary to consider this single pass for the installation of the automatic spacing jumpers, the subsequent passes only comprising punching operations by keys or jumps. Thus, by considering plane A (fig. 38), it can be seen that the first punching field by keys, in which a name must be punched, comprises eighteen columns provided to make it possible to punch names of variable lengths. When a name fills less than eighteen columns, the space key. is activated to obtain spacings corresponding to the remaining columns of this field.
Columns 19 to 23 are intended to be spaced automatically. Columns 24-32 are intended for repeat and require simultaneous automatic spacing. Consequently, the starting jumper is placed in column 19 and. the stop jumper is. arranged in column 33.
Three switches 304, designated respectively by <I> A, B </I> and C and. associated with the corresponding planes are shown in FIG. 1. When these switches are in their EN position, that is to say engaged, they command a repetition in the respective corresponding planes. These switches are also shown in the diagram of FIG. 39 (top right).
A fourth switch 305 (fig. 1 and 39b) is capable of taking one of two positions, namely a position 11 A-NUELLE and. an AUTOMATIC position. When this switch is in the 11IANUAL position, the ejection is suppressed and the plugs can be inserted by hand on the left side of the machine. In this case, the carriage rack must also be pushed into the punching position by hand from the left. When the switch 305 is in the AUTOMATIC position, as in the example considered, ejection occurs automatically after the completion of three passes.
<I> Diagram </I> electric.
Power is supplied to main lines 306 and 307 (fig. 39), from a suitable source, and a switch 308 is closed to supply current to motor 49. With the model 254 plug in position, plugs blanks are disposed in hopper 38 so that hopper contacts 264 are closed (Figs. 8 and 39 '').
All the operations begin when you press a RELEASE button 10 (fig. 30). Using the keyboard mechanism, this key rotates the RELEASE rod 27 and the KB key frame rod 27 (fir ,. 3.>), so as to. cause the closing of the contacts 36 and 37 associated with these rods. These contacts are shown on the left at the top of fig. 39a and, when they are. closed, they establish. a circuit.
starting from line 306 (fig. 39), passing through latch contacts 60, a connection 310, contacts cg of a relay R12 (then in normal position), the exhaust contacts 175, a connection 311 ( fig. 39a), contacts b of a relay R14, contacts 36 and 37 (then closed) of the key frame, contacts a of relay R14 and a connection 312 to lead to the punching electromagnet 156 and , across this one, to line 307.
A parallel fired circuit leaves. contacts of the key frame and passes through contacts a. of a relay R18, contacts 36 and 37 (then closed) for release and a connection <B> 313 </B> (fig. 39) to result in the winding of a relay R15 and, through this, to line 307.
Relay R15 closes contacts b to form a holding circuit starting from line 306 and passing through contacts 111, a connection 314, contacts b of this relay and the winding of this same relay to abou firing the line 307. Relay R15 is therefore kept energized until contacts 111 (fig. 2 and 9) open in the middle of a plug advance cycle.
Relay R15 moves contacts a to form another circuit from line 306 and through contacts 111, connection 314, its contacts b, contacts a (then moved) and the winding of a relay R6 up to line 307. The relay R6 is thus kept attracted at the same time as the relay R15 and it closes its contacts a to form an additional holding circuit starting from the line 306 and passing, through the contacts 111, contacts a of relay R6 and the winding of this relay to lead to line 307.
As can be seen in FIG. 39b, a circuit is then formed from line 306 and passing through contacts d (then closed) of relay R15, a connection 315, contacts c (then closed) of relay R6, hopper contacts 264 (closed ) and the winding of a relay R16 to terminate in line 307. Relay R16 closes contacts a to form a holding circuit from line 307 and through its winding, its contacts a, a connection 316 (fig. 39) and contacts 111, up to line 306. Relay R16 is thus maintained until the middle of a card feed operating cycle.
When contacts c of relay R15 are. closed, a circuit is formed from line 306 (fig. 39) and through the locking contacts 60, a connection 309, a connection 317, the contacts c (then closed) of the relay R15, and the coil of the RELEASE 120R electromagnet, up to line 307. The energization of this electromagnet (fig. 11, 25, 22 and 23) rotates the release finger 178, to raise the pawl 166 and release it from the rack 81, so that this rack then advances from any position it occupies to its position as the last column, no plug being carried by the carriage at that time.
As already said, the punching solenoid 156 is also energized together with the relay R15, so that the punching mechanism also operates and the connecting rod <B> 1.62 </B> is operated to slide (fig. 22) and to engage the pawl 170 in the rack, while the pawl 166 is released from the latter. The purpose of this operation is to discharge the weak 120R electromagnet of the operation of raising the pawl 166, against the pressure and the friction exerted on this pawl by the tooth of the rack, so that this electro -magnet only has to raise the finger 178.
During the return movement of the connecting rod 162, the pawl 170 is disengaged from the rack, but the pawl 166 remains disengaged and the rack can then advance.
The rack advances to a position in which, if a card were in the carriage, this card would be in a position corresponding to the column following the last or sixtieth recording column. When the carriage and the rack continue to advance from this last column position, the contacts 265, known as the LAST COLUMN (fig. 6 and 39), close to form a circuit through the winding of relay R18, which therefore remains energized until the contacts <B> 265 </B> reopen.
Relay R18 (fig. 39 ") moves contacts f to form a circuit starting from line 306 and passing through contacts f (displaced) of relay R18, switch 305, a connection 318, contacts b ( then displaced) of relay R16, a connection 319 and the winding of a relay R1 to lead to line 307. -A parallel circuit leaves from connection 319, passes through contacts b (then displaced) of the relay R6 and the rack clutch electromagnet 56 and leads to line 307.
The clutch electromagnet 56 (FIG. 2) causes the start of a cycle of operations during which the lower plug contained in the. Hopper 38 is advanced to its first column swim punch position, with the slip carriage being moved to the right to receive the slip, which then advances under the control of the jump keys and jumpers. The clamp 39 returns to its right position, in which it is. ready to advance a second file.
The advance of the. first record is preceded shortly in time by the operation. ejector mechanism. This operation is then carried out empty since there is no card on the trolley at that time. The ejection is caused by the closing of contacts a of relay R1 (fig. 39 ") which form a holding circuit from the line. <B> 307 </B> and through the winding of relay R1, its contacts a, connection 316 (fig. 39), connection 314 and contacts 111, up to line 306.
Relay R1 also closes, contacts b (fig. 39), thus forming a circuit from line 306 and through contacts 111, contacts a (then moved) of relay R6, contacts b (moved) of relay Rl, contacts b (displaced) of relay R18 and the winding of the EJECTION electromagnet 108, up to line 307. The excitation of the electromagnet 108 (fig. 2 ) releases the ejection mechanism to allow it to operate, by means of the connecting rod 98 which opens contacts 11.1 in the middle of its movement, thus causing relays Rl, R6, R15 and R16 to drop, including the holding circuits pass through these contacts 111.
Relay R18 has also closed contacts c to energize a relay R17 through a circuit starting from line 306 and passing. by a connection 320 (fi-. 39), the contacts c of relay R18 and the winding of relay R17, to end in line 307. A holding circuit is. simultaneously formed from line 307 and through the winding of relay R17, contacts b of this relay and contacts 111 up to line 306. This relay R17 is not effective at this time of operation of the machine, and its excitation will be removed by the subsequent opening of the contacts 111. When the carriage is moved to the right, the contacts 265 of the last column reopen to remove the excitation of the relay R18.
It will be remembered that the jump bar A is normally in the operative position, carrying a stop jumper in column 1, so that the carriage is stopped in the position corresponding to punching column 1 by the pawls d. 'exhaust, and that the machine is ready to be actuated by any key, to punch in column 1 of plane A.
To prepare for the following operations, relay R12 (fig. 39 ") had been energized by a circuit starting from line 307 and passing through its winding, by contacts e (displaced) of relay R6, contacts g (displaced) of relay R18 and leading to line 306. This had occurred as a result of energizing relay R18, and relay R12 closes contacts a to establish a holding circuit from the line. 307, through its winding, its contacts a, contacts e of a relay R10 and a connection 321 to line 306.
Relay R12 also closes d contacts to forge a circuit when relay R18 is no longer energized. This circuit starts from line 306 and passes through the g contacts (then normal) of relay R18, a connection 322, the d contacts of relay R12, switch 301 (in position A) and the winding of a relay R24 to end at line 307. If the switch 301 was in its position B, a relay R26 would be energized and a relay R28 would be energized if it was in its position C. The relay R24, shown in fig. 39a,. Closes a set of contacts b which connect. selector circuits by so many connections 324 to the electromagnets 120 associated with plane A.
When the relay R26 is energized, it connects the same circuits starting from the connections 324 to the electromagnets 120 associated with the plane B, by means of contacts b which are associated with it. Likewise, the relay R28 is used to connect these circuits to the electromagnets 120 associated with the plane C.
The operator then presses the first punch selection key 10, in the example shown in FIG. 38 on the J key. In accordance with the combination code in fig. 35, this operation closes' Contacts 5, 1, 0, Y and contacts 36 and 37 of the key frame (fig. 39a), which closes a circuit from line 306 (fig. 39). , passing through the latch contacts 60, the connection 310, the contacts g (then attracted) of the relay R12, the contacts 239 associated with the plane C, the contacts d of a relay R38, the contacts 239 associated with the plane B, contacts d of a relay R35,
contacts 239 <I> associates </I> in plan A, contacts <i> d </I> of a relay R32, contacts h (displaced) of relay R12, exhaust contacts 175, connection 311 (fig. 39a), contacts b of relay R14, contacts 36 and 37 of the frame keys, and from there, in parallel, through contacts 36 and 37 of 5, 1, 0 and Y, contacts b of a relay R22 and connections 5, 0 and Y of the group of connections 324 then, by contacts b (closed) of relay R24, normal contacts b of relay R32 and electromagnets 120 of 5, 1, 0 and Y in parallel to end in the line <B> 307. </B>
A parallel circuit starts from the key frame, from its contacts 36 and 37 and passes through contacts a of relay R14 and connection 312 to end at the punching electromagnet 156 which will perform the punching operation. and the consecutive spacing.
The card is now in a position corresponding to column 2, and the operator presses the 0 key; which has the effect of causing the punching of the combination 2, 0 corresponding to this letter, by means of circuits similar to those which have just been described. The keys corresponding to the letters <I> H, N, </I> to spacing, letters <I> J, 0, N, E </I> and S are operated and. the card advances to its position corresponding to, its column 11.
Note that the space key only closes the contacts 36 and 37 of the key frame (see fig. 35), and these contacts close the circuit of the punching electromagnet 156 (fig. 39a), the operation of which simply actuates the spacer pawls, owing to the fact that the excitation of this electromagnet is not accompanied by a punch selection operation. In columns 11 to 18, the space key is pressed repeatedly, since the name does not fill the first field, and this has the effect of bringing the carriage step by step until in the position in which it presents. column 19 of the sheet to the row of punches.
Referring to fig. 38, it will be noted that column 17 of plane B is intended to receive a repetition punching, and this is carried out as follows: This column 17 being in position, the jumper 233 placed in the on position causes the closing associated contacts 238 and the opening of associated contacts 239, and these contacts remain displaced until the column 39 has passed the punches.
As can be seen in fig. 39, the contacts 238 associated with the plane B form a circuit starting from the line 306 and passing through the locking contacts 60, the connection 310, the contacts la (moved) of the relay R12, the contacts 239 associated with the plane C, contacts d of relay R38, contacts 238 associated with plane B (then closed), contacts d of relay R4 and the rolling of relay R35, to end at line 307. Relay R35 moves its contacts d to close the circuit opened by the set of contacts 239 of plane B, so that the circuit leading to the exhaust contacts 175 is reestablished after its momentary opening by the contacts 239.
As can be seen in fig. 39a, relay R35 moves contacts b to disconnect electromagnets 120 of plane B from contacts b of relay R26 and to connect them to contacts 259 of star wheels which analyze plane B of the model sheet. As shown in fig. 39, the electromagnet 261 of the star wheels is excited through a circuit starting from line 307, passing through the winding of this electromagnet and passing through contacts e of relay R18, contacts g (displaced) of relay ffl, the locking contacts 60 to lead to line 306.
Consequently, the plug being in a position corresponding to its column 17, the electromagnets 120 of the plane B move the intermediate members or spacers of the punches which are associated with them to bring them into the swimming punch position, and the electromagnet 156 couples the punching clutch to cause punching of a combination representative of the numeral 1. As shown. explained during the description of the various mechanisms included in the machine shown, the operation of the punching causes the closing of contacts 160 (fig. 12), but the closing of these contacts has no effect at the moment of which it is now comes.
The pivoting of the spacer pawls 166 and 170 (Fig. 22) then moves the carriage forward one column and momentarily opens the contacts 175, to interrupt the punch selection and actuation circuits. The electromagnet 261 is excited at the start of the first pass, so as to lower the star wheels on the model sheet, constituting the feelers, so that the punches encountered by these wheels cause the closing of the contacts 259 corresponding to the combinations. of punch swims.
However, establishing a circuit at. through these contacts is only effective through the b (displaced) contacts of relay R35 for plane B, the displacement of these contacts occurring, as explained, when column 17 is analyzed.
The circuits for repeating punching start from line 306 and pass through connection 311 (fig. 39a) as already mentioned, and then pass through contacts j of relay R4, through connection 325, contacts 259 (plane B), contacts b (displaced) of relay R35 and the windings of electromagnets 120 (plane B) and lead to line 307. These circuits have the sole effect of moving the intermediate components of punching and are not sufficient to have the machine punched.
The operation of the punching electromagnet is controlled by the operation of the space key for column 17 of plane A. When this key is pressed, it controls the punching of the repeat data in column 17 of the plane. B and the passage to column 18. In this column, repeating circuits are again formed and the punching is again initiated by the actuation of the spacing key.
For column 19, a jumper 233 of automatic spacing is provided, and this jumper causes a series of repeated excitations of the punching electromagnet 156, up to the column 24 on which is disposed a jumper 233 d. 'stop. As can be seen in fig. 39, the auto-spacer run jumper 233 closes its contacts 238 to form a circuit from line 306 through latch contacts 60, the g (displaced) contacts of relay R12, a connection 331, a connection 326 , MATIC AUTO START contacts 238, closed by an automatic space jumper,
contacts k of relay R4 and the winding of relay Rl4 to fill in line 307.
Relay R14 being energized, its contacts a (fig. 3911) are moved and the circuit of the punching electromagnet is closed from line 306 and passing, as before, through connection 311 and from there through the a (displaced) contacts of relay R14 and through the winding of the swimming punch electromagnet 156 to terminate in line 307.
This circuit is formed at the same time as the selection circuits of the re petition electromagnets, so that, the plug being in the position corresponding to its column 19, a punching is carried out in the plane B and the plug advances to column 20 in which the subsequent punching selection is made by the punchings of the template card, to energize the electromagnets 120. The punching electromagnet 156 is then energized again through the same. circuit.
It should be noted that relay R14 therefore remains energized since the automatic start contacts 238 (fig. 39) remain closed until the position corresponding to column 33, in which a stop jumper causes them to reopen.
It can therefore be seen that the repetition in plane B continues without interruption up to column 33, at which it is stopped. During this time, when the plug reaches its position corresponding to its column 24, the repeat operation in plane A begins and the run jumper from this column position moves the contacts 238 and 239 (fig. 39) of the plane. AT.
A circuit is thus formed from the line 306 and through the locking contacts 60, the connection 310, the contacts g (displaced) of the relay R12, the contacts 238 of the plane C, the contacts d of the relay R38, the 238 contacts of the plan <I> B </I> (closed), contacts d (moved) of relay R35, contacts 238 (closed) of plane A, contacts b of relay R4 and the winding of relay R32 of plane A to line 307 .
As seen in fig. 39a, the relay R32 moves its contacts b, so that the electromagnets 120 of the plane A are connected to the contacts 259 of the star wheels and the repetition in the planes A and B is carried out simultaneously for the columns 24 to 32 in clusively.
As has already been explained, the automatic stop jumper stops the escape of the carriage when the plug is in the position corresponding to its column 33. The operator then performs the punching and spacing. columns 33 to 48 inclusive by means of the keys, as already described, while the rest of the repetition field of plane B is simultaneously punched out.
When the last column has been punched out, the repeat stop jumper, placed in column 40 for plane B, closes the contacts 239 of this plane and reopens its contacts 238, so that the associated R35 relay (fig. 39) is therefore no longer excited and disconnects the punch selection electromagnets 120 from the contacts of the star wheels in plane B.
When the plug reaches the position corresponding to its column 38, the repeat running jumper for plane C moves the associated contacts 238 and 239 (fig. 39), to energize the relay R38 via contacts f of the relay R4. The selection electromagnets 120 associated with the plane C (fig. 39a) are thus connected to the contacts of the star wheels by means of contacts b of the relay R38, and this connection remains until the jumper d ' repeat stop provided at column 49 interrupts it.
When the plug is in the position corresponding to its column 49, the jump jumper 194 has the effect of mechanically releasing the carriage and the latter then advances without interruption to its position of the last column, in which it closes the contacts 265 (fig. 39) for energizing, - relay R18.
The t1 plane of the form is now fully punched and the repeat fields of planes B and C are also punched. Relay R18 moves its contacts g (fig. 39u) to form a circuit starting from line 306 and passing through contacts g (displaced) of relay R18, contacts e (normal) of relay R6 and the winding of lockout solenoid 73 to terminate at line 307. This circuit prevents a new plug from being advanced from hopper 38.
Previously, when relay R18 had returned its contacts g to normal position, a circuit had been formed from line 306 and through the contacts g (normal) of relay R18, contacts a (normal) of relay R17, contacts b (displaced) of relay R12 and the winding of a relay R13 to end in line 307. A main circuit had thus been formed from line 307 and through the winding of relay R13, contacts b of this relay, connection 316 (fig. 39a and 39) and contacts 111 up to line 306, to keep relay R13 energized until the next ejection operation.
With relay R13 energized, a circuit can be followed in fig. <B> 391 </B> from line 306 and through contacts g (displaced) of relay R18, contacts d (normal) of relay R6, contacts d (displaced) of relay R13 and the winding of relay R10, up to line 307. This relay R10 opens its contacts e arranged in the holding circuit of relay R12, so that the latter ceases to be energized. Relay R10 closes contacts a. to form a holding circuit from line 307 and through the winding of relay R10, its contacts a, contacts b (normal) of a relay R8 and contacts c (normal) of relay R12, up to 'on line 306.
This same relay R10 also closes contacts c, so as to prepare a circuit which will be formed when relay R18 ceases to be energized, from line 306 and through the (normal) contacts of relay R18, a connection 327, contacts c (normal) of relay R10 and solenoid 202B of PASSAGE 2 to line 307. This solenoid (fig. 28) turns the jump bar of plane B to bring it into the operative position. This circuit is maintained throughout the second pass.
The 1st rack clutch electromagnet 56 is energized through a circuit starting from line 306 (fig. 39b) and passing through the f (displaced) contacts of relay R18, the switch 305, a connection 328 , contacts d (displaced) of relay R10, connection 329, contacts b (normal) of relay R6 and the rolling of electromagnet 56 and leading to line 307. As a result, the machine performs a sheet advance cycle, during which no sheet is however advanced, the carriage being returned to its initial position and the sheet remaining in position in this carriage.
The ejection operation is thus normally suppressed and no circuit is formed through the winding of the ejection electromagnet 108, the relay R6 not being energized.
The jump stop stop arranged at column 1 of plane B (fig. 38) causes the plug to stop in a position in which its first column is ready to receive punching controlled by keys. As can be seen in fig. 39 ", the return of contacts g of relay R18 to their normal position closes a circuit. Starting from line 306 and passing through these contacts, through connection 322, contacts f (displaced) of relay R10, switch 302 ( in position B) and winding up relay R26 to end at line 307.
Relay R26 closes its contacts b (fig. 39a) to connect the electromagnets 120 of plane B to contacts 36 and 37 of the keyboard, so that when the keys 10 are actuated, the first field of plane B is then punched. by means of circuits similar to those described in connection with plan A.
* When the plug reaches the position corresponding to its column 7, the jump rider 194 placed at this column releases the cart and the latter moves uninterruptedly to its position as the last column, in which the relay R18 est. again excited. Relay R8 is then energized through a circuit. starting from line 306 (fig. 39 ") and passing through contacts g (displaced) of relay R18, contacts d (normal) of relay R6, contacts b (displaced) of relay R10, contacts c ( normal) of relay R13 and the winding of this relay RS to end in line 307.
This relay forms a starting holding circuit. of line 307 and passing through the winding and through contacts a of this relay R8, and through contacts c of relay R12 and ending in line 306. On the other hand, relay R8 opens its contacts b and interrupts thus the holding circuit of relay R10.
A circuit is formed from line 306 and through contacts f (displaced) of relay R18, a connection 328, contacts c (displaced) of relay R8, connection 329, contacts b (normal) of relay R6 and in rolling. of the rack clutch electromagnet 56 connected to line 307. This circuit has the effect of causing a new operation to advance the plug and return the carriage. The action of the pusher 39 is again eliminated due to the excitation of the electromagnet 73 for locking the plug advance. This electromagnet is excited through contacts e (normal) of relay R6 and contacts g (displaced) of relay R18.
The ejection electromagnet 108 is not energized, so that the plug goes back with the carriage.
The 202C electromagnet is. energized through contacts d (displaced) of relay R8 and contacts g of relay R18, when the carriage returns to the rear, so that the jump bar 192 of the plane C is displaced and is brought into the operating position to be maintained in this position until the carriage again arrives in its last column position. No jump stop rider is. arranged at column 1 of bar 192 of plane C, so that the carriage advances without interruption to column 24 as soon as it is released from its return mechanism. At this column 24, a stop jumper stops the advance of the carriage.
In the meantime, relay R28 (fig. <B> 391) </B> was excited through Zm starting circuit. from line 306 and passing. through contacts g (normal) of relay R18, connection 322, contacts c (displaced) of relay R8, switch 303 and the winding of relay R28, to end in line 307.
This relay R28 closes its contacts b, visible in fig. 39a, to connect the punch selection electromagnets 120 of the plane C alx contacts 36 and 37 of the keys, so that the actuation of these keys will command the punching of data in the PER FORATION field of the plane C, in the way already described.
When the carriage escapes to advance to column 37, the jump rider 194 (fig. 38), placed in this column, mechanically releases the carriage so that it jumps to its last position. column, in which an ejection operation is then performed. The excitation of relay R8, shown in fig. 39, has closed contacts f of this relay, so that a circuit is then formed when the relay R17 is energized.
This circuit starts from line 306 and goes through connection 320, contacts c (normal) of relay R18, contacts d (normal) of relay R17, contacts f (displaced) of relay R8, switch 300, the a (normal) contacts of relay R1.5 and the winding of relay R6 to end at line 307. Relay R6 forms a holding circuit passing through its contacts a and the contacts <B> 111, </B> so that when the carriage arrives in its last column position and the relay R18 is energized, the relay R6 is already in the energized state.
As a result, the contacts e (fig. 39b) of this relay are moved to prevent the excitation of the electromagnet. plug advance worm 73 and a new plug is advanced. Relay R16 is also energized, before the plug comes to its last column position, by a circuit starting from line 306 (fig. 39b) and passing through the normal contacts f of relay R18, connection 315, the contacts c (moved) of relay R6, hopper contacts 264 and the coil of relay R16, to terminate at line 307. Contacts a of relay R16 establish the holding circuit through to connection 316 and the contacts <B> 111, </B> as before.
However, when relay R18 is energized, the supply clutch is energized by a circuit starting from line 306 and passing through contacts f (displaced) of relay R18, switch 305, connection 318, contacts b (displaced) of relay R16, contacts b (displaced) of relay R6 and the winding of electromagnet 56, to end at line 307. A new plug is thus advanced. As before, the relay R1 is energized in parallel with the electromagnet 56 and is held by means of its contacts a and a connection 316, simultaneously maintaining the relay Rl6 energized.
As can be seen in fig. 39, the ejection electromagnet 108 is energized by a circuit starting from line 307 and passing through its winding, contacts b (displaced) of relay R18, contacts b (displaced) of relay Rl, contacts a (displaced) of relay R6 and the contacts <B> 111, </B> to end at line 306. The ejection device is thus released to eject the punched plug and the operations then continue with the new plug in the same way as with the first.
As can be seen in fig. 39 '', when the relay R1.8 is, excited, a circuit, is formed through its contacts g and through the contacts e of the relay R6 to energize the relay R12, as at the start of operations. This relay R12 is maintained as before, it energizes relay R24 and interrupts the energization of relay R8.
In the foregoing, the operations which take place automatically during three successive passages have been described. It is obvious that if the switch 300 (fig. 39) is placed in its second position, the relay R6 is energized during the second passage and thus causes the ejection of the plug at the end of this second passage. Likewise, if the switch 300 is put in position 1, the ejection takes place after the first passage.
When the controls are put in place for three successive passages, for example, it may happen that the operator wishes to give up punching himself when ordering keys in planes B and C. and to have the form ejected.
This is possible by pressing the jump key, so as to close the JUMP 36 and 37 (fig. 39) con- tacts, the operation of which is accompanied by the closing of contacts 36 and 37 of the KB BUTTON FRAME. These latter contacts energize the punching electromagnet 156 to initiate a no-load operation during which the contacts 160 of the PUNCH FRAME close.
to form a circuit from line 306 and through these contacts, the JUMP contacts 36 and 37, contacts ni. relay R4, the respective c contacts arranged in series with relays R38, R35 and R32, and the jump solenoid 921, up to line 307. Contacts c of relays R38, R35 and R32 are intended to prevent a carriage jump during automatic data repetition. The jump electromagnet releases the cart to let it advance up. his position as the last column, unless he meets a jump stopping rider, in which case he stops at the position corresponding to that rider.
If any of the relays R32, R35 or R38 is energized when the jump key is pressed, the circuit will start. of the jump contacts 36 and 37 is diverted to continue through the contacts m of the relay R4, the contacts c (which we suppose to be moved) of the relay R38, the contacts e of the relay R14 and the automatic running electromagnet 244, and terminate at line 307. This electromagnet closes its contacts 238 to provide repeated pulses to the punching electromagnet 156, these pulses continuing until the carriage meets a stop jumper. on the auto-space bar or until the form reaches its last column position.
An example of the use of the jump key is the case in which repeat punches and punches under key control overlap in fields of different planes and in which punch under control can vary in number of columns. to be punched. Consider the following special case: Plan B: repetition in columns 1 to 30.
Plan A: punching by keys of columns 1 to 30. An automatic space stop jumper 233 is put in place in the position corresponding to column 51. In case, for example, fifteen columns are punched under command keys, a repetition punching being carried out simultaneously in these fifteen columns, and where the jump key is then actuated, the rest of the columns of the field considered is automatically spaced apart in the plane A, while a repetition punching is performed in plan B.
The release key can be lowered during any pass and then causes the same sequence of operations as those described in connection with the start operations. As a result, the plug carriage is released, regardless of the position it occupies, the plug is ejected and a new plug is advanced into this carriage. The different circuits automatically and automatically return to their respective normal conditions, so that, for this new file, the operations start again for the foreground or plane A.
A switch 330 says. wide plug, shown in fig. 398, is arranged to energize relay R22 when it is closed. The connections connecting the contacts 36 and 37 of the keys to the connections 324 are inverted by this relay, so that the keys X, Y, Z, 0, 1, 3 and 5 respectively control the circuits of the connections 5, 3, l ., 0, Z, X and Y. This switch is closed when it is desired to punch in one or the other or in the two planes D and E of fig. 38.
In this case, the plugs are. placed in the hopper, so that their respective planes E are turned towards the front of the machine and the controls are put back in place corresponding to the operations which one wishes to carry out for these additional planes, the punching of these planes constituting a independent operation and this machine operation may include one or two steps. It is obvious that, the cards being thus reversed, the plane C of each of these cards can also be punched. This provision can be used when these sheets are intended to receive data only in their plans. <I> C, D </I> and E, and the commands are then set for the three wise steps.
When it is desired to operate the machine under manual control, switch 305 (fig. 39 ") is set to manual, and the repeater jumper support is removed, which closes the cones. tacts 247 (fig. 39) The relay R4 is then energized through these contacts 247 and through the latch contacts 60.
Contacts h of this relay R4 short-circuit contacts g and h of relay R12 and repeat contacts 238 and 239, so that the circuits leading to connection 311 start directly from contacts 60 and pass through contacts Iz of the relay R4 to lead to the exhaust contacts 175 and connection 311 and from there (fig. 39a) to contacts 36 and 37 of the button frame and buttons via contacts b of relay R14.
Contacts g, e and c of relay R4 (fig. 39) are connected to contacts 14 of the repeat button via a connection 331 and connection 326. Consequently, when these contacts are closed at with the hand, the plug being in any position, they form a circuit from line 306 and through contacts 60, connection 310, contacts g (moved) of relay R12, connections 331 and 326, contacts 14, contacts k (displaced) of relay R4 and the winding of automatic run relay R14, up to line 307.
The establishment of this circuit has the effect of starting the carriage for a step-by-step advance and of exerting the punching electromagnet 156 through contacts a of relay R14 (fig. 39a). In parallel with a part of this circuit, a circuit is simultaneously formed from connection 331 and through contacts e of relay R18, to energize the electromagnet of the star wheels 261 (fig. 39), so that the model sheet is analyzed.
A third circuit starts from connection 331 and passes through contacts g, e and c arranged in parallel with relay R4, the three switches 304 and the windings arranged in parallel with relays R38, R35 and R32, for abou shooting at line 307. These latter relays move their contacts shown in fig. 39a, so that, as the card is advanced, all the punchings of the three planes of the model card are repeated on the card that the carriage carries and the spacing is continued until the last position. column.
When the plug is in its last column position and the relay R18 is energized, this plug is ejected and a new plug is advanced by actuating the repeat key which closes its contacts 14a (fig. 39b). to energize relay R1 and electromagnet 56 via contacts b (displaced) of relay R6. To energize relay R6, the actuation of the release key must precede the actuation of this repetition key, in order to first energize the relay R15, as explained, this relay energizing at its turn relay R6.
Thus, as before, the relays R6 and R1 being energized (fig. 39), the ejection electromagnet 108 is energized to eject the plug.
The electromagnets 31 for replacing the keys (fig. 39) are. excited by a circuit starting from line 306 and passing through contacts 60, connections 310, 309, contacts of punch frame 160, contacts d of relay R14, connection 333 and electro-magnets 31, to result in. line 307. These electromagnets are therefore energized for each actuation of a punch and they are also energized directly through the latch contacts 61 which close during the advance of a new plug, so that 'they block the action of keys during such periods of advance.
In summary, the machine described with reference to the drawing comprises a keyboard comprising coding devices with the aid of which a key assigned to an alphabetic or numeric character or to a symbol establishes circuits for controlling the punching of marks, in accordance with to a combination code of seven perforations. Devices for advancing the plug and ejecting the plug are provided, and the latter device is arranged so that the ejection of the plug is suppressed, when more than one section of this plug must be punched. , until all the selected sections have been subjected to the planned operations.
The machine shown further comprises an actuating mechanism for the punches, this mechanism being driven by a motor, so that its operation is very direct. Jump setting devices are provided, and these devices can be easily disassembled to adjust the jump conditions for the different sections of the plugs. Adequate means allow the punched combinations to be automatically reversed, so that additional sections of the cards can be punched by advancing these cards in an inverted position relative to the punches.
The punching mechanism of the machine described with reference to the drawing uses a rocking device, the punching operation being carried out during a movement of a rocking member of this device, which passes through a neutral point, and a second setting operation. punching being performed during the return movement of this rocking member. A device is thus used which is driven by a back and forth movement, so as to obtain two punching operations for each of these back and forth movements.
