En raison des deux états possibles de chacune des barres 77, le nombre des permutations offert par l'ensem ble des positions des six barres est de soixante- quatre. Toutefois, comme le nombre total des opérations qu'exige le clavier normal d'une machine à composer est de quatre-vingt-onze, étant donné qu'il existe quatre-vingt-onze touches, et comme l'addition de fonctions spéciales porte le nombre d'opérations néces saires à un chiffre voisin de cent quinze, les permutations permises par les six barres 77 ne sont pas suffisantes ;
Cet arbre porte une came 312 (fig.

We will first refer to the fi, - ,. 1 and 2 where it can be seen that the control apparatus is supported by a main frame 21. This frame is mounted below the manual keyboard 22 (FIG. 1) which is usually included in composing machines.
For most heavy bars 59 (fig. 3), not only a manually controlled key lever 57 is provided, but also an independent, automatically controlled lever 27, while in the case of those of the characters whose levers manually operated key levers are located in the two lower rows of the group of six horizontal rows of key levers (fig. 3), each of the key levers 57 has been modified by the addition of an offset portion 26 which is generally similar to the corresponding portions of the automatically controlled levers 27 but which, in this case, is integral with the manually operated key levers.
The frame 21 extends below the entire keypad and supports, among other things, code bars 77 and selectable bars 76 (Fig. 3).
A suitable drive pulley 36 (fia. 1) is set on a controlled shaft 37 forming part of the machine and actuates, by means of a transmission belt 38, a controlled pulley 39 (fig. 12) and a shaft 41, which rotates continuously and on which three helical-toothed pinions 40, 42 and 43 are wedged (fig. 12). The pinion 42 actuates a helical toothed wheel 44 mounted idly on a shaft 45 rotating in appropriate bearings of the frame 21.
The pinion 43 meshes with a helical gear 47 mounted on a shaft 48 in the same way as the pinion 42, meshes with the helical gear 44 of the shaft 45, but as its diameter is a little smaller and that its transmission ratio with its wheel 47 is modified in a corresponding way, it communicates to said wheel 47 mounted on the shaft 48 a movement which, to a corresponding extent, is slower than that imparted to the helical wheel 44 of the shaft 45. Likewise, the helical gear 40 meshes with a helical wheel 46 mounted loose on a shaft 50. Each of the shafts 45, 48 and 50 is coupled with the corresponding helical wheel 44, 47 and 46 via spring loaded claw clutches 49, 314 all of which are of similar construction.
The shaft 45 carries three cams which actuate the record reader mechanism 54 and will be referred to hereinafter as the record reader shaft; it also carries a control toothed wheel 52 (fig. 12) actuating a camshaft 53. The shaft 48 carries a cam 256 serving to actuate the lifting mechanism and another cam 270 serving to disengage its own driving link and to control the drive connection with the record reader shaft 45 at the completion of each of the cycles of its own operation, this shaft 48 being referred to hereinafter as the elevator camshaft.
Shaft 50 carries a transfer cam 51 for controlling the operation of an additional transfer mechanism which allows the controller to operate on a two cycle basis.
Reference will now be made to FIG. 3, where it is seen that the four upper rows of key levers 57 which pivot on shafts 58 are suitably articulated, at 61, for the effect of moving weights 59, a dead-stroke linkage which allows play Considerable being provided at the various points of articulation due to the excess play existing in the notches 62. A particular strike or key is achieved by providing a constant lever arm ratio in all key levers, although, as can be seen from an examination of the drawing, the successive horizontal rows, viewed from top to bottom, are composed of levers whose length gradually increases.
Each of the weights 59 has a series of notches, including several unused notches 62 to facilitate their replacement. The lower two rows of key levers, which pivot at 64, are mounted so that they can be assembled with the lower notch 62 of some of the various weights 59 and are provided with offset extensions 26 protruding through a panel. 63 on the keyboard.
It can thus be seen that, as regards the release or distribution of the dies controlled by the key levers of the four upper rows (fig. 3), such distribution can be effected using either a lever to hand 57, or an automatically controlled lever 27, each of these two levers being actuated independently while the other remains unactuated, but that, as regards the distribution of the dies controlled by the key levers of the two rows lower, only one lever is used for both manual and automatic operation.
A row of bent levers 65, supported by a common shaft 66 and arranged in alignment, are placed overlapping with respect to the aforementioned extensions 26 so as to come into contact with them when they are animated with a dextrorsum rotation in antagonism to each other. the action of individual springs 67. The vertical arm 68 of each of the levers 65 is placed opposite a certain element forming part of a corresponding series of intermediate elements 69 which, as emerges from FIG. 3, are arranged in two symmetrical rows of elements facing each other and which resemble scissor-shaped structures due to their particular shape.
The two rows of intermediate elements 69 are mainly supported by a common shaft 71 around which they are normally urged by their individual springs 72 so that their hooks or offset portions 73 are located out of the way of a control member. or strike bar 74. The tails of the various spacer elements 69 occupy cooperative positions with respect to the ends 75 of a corresponding series of selectable bars 76 which, in turn, occupy a working position with respect to a series of bars. code 77.
The code bars 77 are provided with notches and guards on both their upper edges and on their lower edges and in this way allow the arrangement of a double row of selectable bars 76 which are mounted to pivot around. a common pivot pin 78. The mutually facing elements of each pair of selectable bars 76 are normally biased towards each other by a common spring 79.
Bars 76 normally tend to selectively engage with code bars 77, but are prevented from doing so by two spacer bars or brackets 81 and 82 supported at each end by cam roller arms 83 and 84, respectively. , and which are normally biased towards each other by a common spring 85 such that the cam rollers 86 carried by these arms normally roll on the periphery of a spacer cam 87 mounted on a shaft 53.
On the shaft 53, (fig. 4) is also mounted a cam 89 which cooperates with a cam roller 91 carried by an elbow lever 92 pivoting at 93 on the frame 21. To the lower arm of the elbow lever 92 is articulated one of the ends of a connecting rod 94, the other end of which is articulated to a member 95 supported by a pivot 96 and serving to actuate the striking bar. The member 95 is normally biased in the sinistrorsum direction by a spring 97, so that the linkage described above maintains the cam follower 91 in contact with the periphery of the cam 89. The member 95 has a notch 98 intended for to cooperate with journals 99 carried by the ends of the yoke or striking bar 74.
It goes without saying that an assembly comprising a cam 89 and the associated linkage is provided at each of the ends of the shaft 53, so that a reciprocating movement is communicated to the striking bar 74.
When the code bars 77 are rotated in position, as will be apparent from the following, the shaft 53 and the cam 87 are rotated which has the effect of pulling the calipers 81 towards each other. and 82 under the action of the spring 85, by causing the selection of one of the bars 76 which causes the intermediate element 69 which is associated with it to oscillate to bring the shoulder 73 of this element on the path of the bar. hit 74.
As the strike bar 74 moves to the left (looking at Fig. 3), it drives the selected insert element 69 to cause the dextrorsum pivot of its crank lever 65, after which the associated automatic control lever 27 receives a sinistrorsum oscillation around its pivot 58 (or 64) to cause the lifting of the associated weight 59. The lifting of any of the weights 59 has the effect of releasing a corresponding element forming part of a series of time mechanisms, designated generally by 200.
This results from a sinistrorsum rotation communicated to a rotary trigger member 201 until said member has ceased to support a cam yoke 202, which then falls until the peripheral toothing 203 of a mounted cam 204. pivotally between the legs of the yoke 202, engages a continuously rotating rubber roller 205.
The engagement of the teeth 203 with the roller 205 communicates a dextrorsum rotation to the cam 204 which, due to its eccentricity, lifts the yoke 202 until its opposite end 206, which abuts against a distribution blade 207 , communicates a time-regulated dispensing stroke to the die-dispensing mechanism, designated by 208, after which the yoke 202 is again supported by the trigger member 201 awaiting another die-dispensing movement.
The role of the timing mechanisms, as is generally known, is to ensure sufficient time to allow the magazine delivery mechanism 208 to operate without the same time being required to depress a control key 57. L The application of such a delay element is important because the movement of the released dies to the assembly position is by gravity. Indeed, without such a delay, and in particular under automatic control, a direct dispensing device could be actuated and returned to its normal position before the die has had time to leave its store 209. One of these mechanisms in time , or overlapping functions over time, is provided for each of the levers 57, its role being to release a matrix 211 from the store 209.
Reference will now be made to FIGS. 9 and 10. The right-hand parts of the code bars 77 are hinged to one end of individually associated connecting rods 101, the other end of which is hinged to the corresponding member of a series of shaped transfer levers. of associated T 102, which are pivotally mounted on a pivot shaft 103, itself mounted in the end of one of the arms 104 of a caliper 105 with transfer levers, the arms 104 and 106 of which pivot on a pivot shaft 107 suitably disposed in the frame 21. The caliper 105 carries at the end of the arm 106 a cam roller <B> 108 </B> which cooperates with the transfer cam 51 fixed to the shaft 50.
The caliper 105 is normally biased in the dextrorsum direction by a spring 109 holding the roller 108 against the periphery of the cam 51.
The transfer levers 102 have two stops 111 and 112 which are in working connection with two stops 113 and 114, respectively formed on a series of intermediate selector bars 115 suitably supported in the frame 21 to move longitudinally and in parallel. The stops 111 to 114 are spaced such that when one or the other of the two stops <B> 113 </B> or 114 is brought opposite the associated stop 111 or 112, the other stop 113 or 114 is slightly away from - the associated stop. Each of the intermediate selector bars 115 is articulated at its right end (fig. 10) to the arm <B> 117 </B> of an associated T-shaped transfer lever 118, pivoting on a pivot shaft 119 mounted on a transfer bracket 121.
Levers 118 have stops 122 and 123 intended to cooperate with stops 124 and 125 formed on a corresponding series of tape probe levers 126, pivoting on a pivot shaft 127 suitably disposed in recording reader 54. Each of the levers 126 has an arm 128 which terminates in a rod 129 for probing a tape 131 which has been provided with combinations of perforations conforming to a six-unit permutation code. The levers 126 also have an intermediate orifice 130 which leaves a fixed bar 120 placed in said orifice sufficient play to allow a slight reciprocating movement of the levers <B> 126. </B>
Individual springs 132 normally bias the levers 126 towards their extreme sinistrorsum position, being cyclically subjected to the counteracting action of a reciprocating yoke 433. This caliper is provided with a transverse bar 434 placed below horizontal extensions 435 forming an integral part of the probe levers 126. The caliper 433 is supported to pivot in a suitable manner and carries a cam roller (not shown) which cooperates. with a cam mounted on the shaft 45. On the shaft 45 is also mounted a cam (not shown) which serves to actuate a device 136 for advancing the tape (fig. 17) carrying a drive pawl 437 which cooperates with a ribbon drive ratchet 438.
The reciprocating movement of the pawl 437 thus communicates, via the ratchet 438, an intermittent movement to a drive shaft 439 which carries a drive pinion 441 whose teeth 442 engage with a central longitudinal row of holes in the ribbon. 131.
Thus, in accordance with the time-regulated action of the calipers 433 and 121, the probe lever group 126 is first enabled to perform sinistrorsum rotation (to a degree limited by the bar 120) and, during This time, those of the levers <B> 126 </B> whose rods 129 are not stopped by the recording tape 131 but are on the contrary placed opposite a perforation of said tape.
are made to rotate until their respective stops 125 have come to face the corresponding stops 123, while the other levers 126 which are prevented from performing such sinistrorsum rotation remain in the position they occupy at FIG. 10, with their stops 124 placed opposite the corresponding stops 122.
Immediately after this state of affairs, the transfer caliper 121 receives a sinistrorsum rotation to bring the levers at T 118 into engagement with the respective probe levers 126 and, to an extent which depends on which of the two positions these levers are susceptible to. To possess, said levers 118 are brought to corresponding positions and impart a similar movement to the associated intermediate selector bars 115. In this way, a set of positions corresponding to the combination of perforations present in each transverse row of the tape is communicated to the bars. intermediate selectors 115.
After each such operation, the tape <B> 131 </B> is stepped forward until another transverse row of perforations has been brought opposite the probe rods 129.
The various probe levers 126 are returned to their normal or initial position at a determined point in each work cycle, but the transfer levers 118 and the associated intermediate selector bars 115 are not thus recalled and, on the contrary, remain in the position at , which they were brought, until they were brought to a subsequent new position of the transfer mechanism. This work mode allows overlap in the operation of the two sets of levers and gives the intermediate selector bars 115 maximum rest time during each work cycle.
Another overlap in time is ensured between the operation of the intermediate selector bars 115 and that of the code bars 77 by the additional transfer mechanism comprising the transfer levers 102.
The transfer mechanism composed of the transfer levers 118, and the additional transfer mechanism composed of the levers 103 are operated one after another, which enables the control apparatus to work on the basis of cycle to cycle. two times according to which the shaft 45 of the tape reader is first put into action to perform a reading or probing of the tape 131 and to communicate a corresponding code position to the intermediate selector bars 115, as well as, towards the end of the work cycle, to trigger the work cycle of the transfer camshaft 50 using a cam and a pulsating contact which will be discussed later,
this has the effect of transferring the code position of the intermediate selector bars 115 to the code bars 77. This two-cycle arrangement increases the time available to the control apparatus to perform its control function, at any given speed, by comparison with the time that would be available for the same function in the case of a single cycle control device. In other words, the two-cycle arrangement provides an overlap which allows the tape reader to begin reading or probing a second row of perforations in the tape while the control function for the row of perforations is performed. previous ribbon.
Six of the code bars 77 are positioned in the manner described during each duty cycle through the record reader 54; and a seventh code bar 135 is provided, which is a so-called displacement-return bar and which is placed in position by a special structure in FIG. 5.
Some of the key levers are used to perform the travel and recall functions. The selectable bars 133 and 134 (fig. 5 and 6) determine the positioning of the seventh code bar 135 as follows. A drawbar 136 is placed juxtaposed with bar 133 which is intended to effect the movement by cooperating with said bar 133, this bar 136 pivoting, as well as the bars 76, on the pivot shaft 78. The bar pull 136 is slidably disposed with respect to bar 133 as a result of the cooperation of a pin 137 attached thereto with slot 138 of bar 136 (Fig. 6).
The bar 133 has a vertical end 139 which acts, when the bar 133 is selected, so as to rotate a special insert element 141 around a pivot shaft 71 so as to bring the shoulder 73 of this element onto the path of the reciprocating bar 74. The intermediate element 141 is not provided with a nose capable of cooperating with the bent levers 65 like that included in the other intermediate elements 69, given that said element 141 does not act not via an angled lever 65. Instead of such a nose, the intermediate element 141 is provided, in its tail position, with a pin 142 which cooperates with the vertically angled portion 143 of the chin-up bar 136.
After the code bars 77 have been set by the tape reader in accordance with the displacement code signal, the selectable bar 133 is selected, after the spacer 81-82 has operated, and receives a dextrorsum rotation. around the pivot 78, such that its end 139 causes sinistrorsum rotation of the intermediate element 141 to bring the shoulder 73 of said element on the path of the bar 74.
After the movement then effected to the left (by looking at FIG. 6) by the interlayer element 141, the pin 142 of this element cooperates with the vertical elbow 143 to cause the drawbar 136 to move to the left, by overcoming the action of a spring 144. When the bar 136 is thus actuated, a lower projection 145 of this bar acts on one of the arms of an angled lever 146 and communicates to this lever a dextrorsum rotation (looking at FIG. . 5), by imparting a movement similar to the latch 147 through a connecting rod 148.
This movement of the latch 147 releases a lever 149 with which arms 151 and 152 are integrally associated, and allows * this lever to obey the action of its spring 153 and to attempt to move the code bar 135 to the left ( fig. 5) under the action of the arm <B> 151 </B> on the projection 154 of this bar.
The lever linkage for moving the code bar 135 is constructed so that there is little clearance between the end of the lever arm 151 and the protrusion 154 of the bar 135 when the lever 149 is held by the lever. shoulder 155 of the latch 147 so that, in the event that for some reason the code bar 135 is not displaced by the spring 156 immediately after the action of the latch 147, the end 157 of the lever 149 is released from the shoulder 155 and not be returned to its position where it is locked by this shoulder in the event that the latch 147 returns to its inactivity position before the bar 135 has been moved.
This play indeed allows sufficient rotation of the lever arm 151 and of the associated lever 149 to ensure that, after the return of the latch 147, the end 157 of the lever 149 will be located below the shoulder 155. The bar 135 is notched so that it does not prevent the selection of one or the other of the selectable bars 133 and 134 in one or the other of its selection positions.
Likewise, the choice of the conjugate bar 134, under the influence of the recall code signal, causes the displacement of the code bar 135 in the opposite direction, that is to say to the right when looking at FIG. 5. This movement is obtained with the aid of a similar projection 145 integral with a bar 158 which is juxtaposed to the bar 134 and slides relative to the latter.
When the bar 158 is selectively actuated, in a manner similar to that described for the bar 136, it engages the arm 152 of the lever 149 which it causes to move in the sinister direction around the pivot 159, causing the extension of the spring 156 and a new engagement of the projection 157 behind the shoulder 155 of the latch 147. A lever 161, connected to the opposite end of the spring 156, is urged by the latter so as to move the bar 135 to the right as soon as it is able to do so after the spacer 81-82 has operated.
In this case, as in the first case, the actual displacement of the code bar 135 is effected by the intermediary of the spring 156. A device is thus obtained which, by carrying out the displacement of a seventh code bar, doubles the number of possible permutations. As has already been described, each of the six code bars 77 is positioned, in a corresponding manner, according to the presence or absence of perforations in the transverse rows of the tape or other control element.
Due to the two possible states of each of the bars 77, the number of permutations offered by the set of positions of the six bars is sixty-four. However, since the total number of operations required by the normal keyboard of a typing machine is ninety-one, since there are ninety-one keys, and since the addition of special functions involves the number of operations necessary to a figure close to one hundred and fifteen, the permutations allowed by the six bars 77 are not sufficient;
therefore the seventh bar 135 has been added to increase the number of permutations. Although two permutations were used to move and recall the seventh bar 135, the total number of permutations obtained with seven bars is increased to one hundred and twenty-six.
A selectable bar 182 placed near the left side of FIG. 5 is intended to engage with one of the arms of a lever 183, the other arm of which actuates the rail movement mechanism.
After the dies 211 (Fig. 3) have been released from the various channels 212 (Fig. 1) where they were in magazine 209, they fall into either of a series of chutes and, from these, on an inclined conveyor belt 214, to then be collected by a composter block 215. The block 215 is provided with two fixed lower rails 216 and a movable upper rail 217 (fig. 7 and 8).
When the upper rail 217 occupies that of its positions which is indicated in dotted lines (FIG. 7), the dies received subsequently occupy a position 218; but when this rail 217 is retracted and comes to the position marked in solid lines, the dies received thereafter are made to fall completely and come to the position 219 indicated in dotted lines.
In accordance with current practice, each of the dies is provided with two mold impressions 221 and 222 (fig. 8) and, depending on which of the two positions occupied by the particular die on the composter block 215, one or the other of the two impressions of molding comes opposite the mold chamber, during the platemaking of the particular block line. The movable upper rail 217 is articulated to an angled lever 223 capable of performing a limited movement and whose position is adjustable in a precise manner by the operation of the stop screw 224.
A connecting rod 225, pivoting at one of its ends on the elbow lever 223, is connected at its other end to a lever 226 which pivots at 227 and is subjected to the action of a spring. The opposite end of lever 226 cooperates with a shoulder 228 of a trigger lever 229. The latter thus establishes a releasable coupling connection with the lever 226 by means of the shoulder 228. The trigger lever 229 is provided with an element projecting upwards and intended to be controlled manually, while its lower end 231 is placed in a position suitable for its control by the lever 183 described above (FIGS. 5 and 7).
When the selectable bar 182 is operated, in a manner similar to that of the bars 133 and 134, which causes the lever 183 to move, the trigger lever 229 moves, allowing the lever 226 to move under it. action of the springs 232 and cause the movable upper rail 217 to be brought to its working position (indicated in dotted lines). This position can also be obtained manually by releasing the trigger lever 229 by maneuvering its portion directed upwards.
In this way, it is possible to assemble part of the line with the dies in their lowered or lower rail position, and another part with the dies in their raised or upper rail position, by manual control or automatic.
A special selectable bar 162 (Fig. 5) analogous to bars 133 and 134 is selected upon receipt of an elevator control signal. During a movement of the selectable bar 162 forwards (to the left of FIG. 6), this bar acts on the rod portion 163 (FIG. 9) of a T-shaped lever 164 which performs this causes sinistrorsum rotation around its pivot 165 by over-mounting the action of spring 166.
When the lever 164 performs such a rotation, one of its arms 167 pulls a connecting rod 168, which causes an elbow lever 169 to oscillate in the dextrorsal direction (fig. 13), this lever then acting by its arm <B> 171 </ B> so as to cause the release lever 72 to come to occupy a position where it removes the controlled element 170 (fig. 16) from the clutch 49, thus stopping the rotation of the shaft 45 of the recording player .
The other arm 174 of lever 164 is connected to a slider 175 which, during the rotation described, is projected to the right (fig. 9) until its offset portion 176 has been engaged behind a shoulder 177 a spring lever 178. A vertical portion of the bar 175 pivots on one end of a floating lever 181 causing this lever to move during its own movement.
When the number of dies which accumulate on the composter block 215 has reached a value sufficient to allow the platemaking of a complete line, an elevator control signal, recorded on the tape and probed by the tape reader 54 , causes the elevator control bar 162 to be selected and the drive shaft 45 to stop to stop the tape advance, as already described. This selection rotates lever 164 to move connecting rod 168 to the left and slider 175 to the right.
As the connecting rod 168 is connected to the clutch release lever 172, its movement to the left (looking at Figs. 9 and 13) brings the clutch release lever 172 to a position where it can engage with a beveled tab 233 (Fig. 16) carried by the controlled element 170 of the spring clutch 49. The movement of the shaft 45 continues until the tab 233 engages the lever 172, said tab then entering a hole 234 in acting by its bevelled edge on the corresponding inclined surface 235 of the lever 172, which causes the stopping of the shaft 45.
In this action, the tab 233 and the controlled element 170 are forced to perform a retraction movement with respect to the driving clutch element 236 and are temporarily held in this position by a retaining lever 237 (fig. 13), the roller carried by this lever being biased by a spring so that it falls behind the shoulder 238 of the disc 239.
By moving to the right (fig. 9) the sliding bar 175 is locked by the shoulder 177 of the lever 178 and, in cooperation with the lever 164, communicates a similar movement to one end of the floating lever 181 to which it is connected at 241.
The opposite end 240 (fig. 2) of the floating lever 181 is clamped by a yoke 242 which terminates the connecting rod 243, the opposite end of which is connected to the control lever 244 of the delivery slide, which lever is placed near the neck arm. smoothing delivery man 245 (fig. 1) and supported so that it is maintained in its extreme dextrorsum position, overcoming the action of a spring 246, while the delivery arm occupies its right or normal position .
However, when the delivery arm 245 is actuated, as is the case following a movement of the elevator 247, it oscillates to the left and allows the lever 244 to obey the action of its spring 246. and thus perform a sinistrorsum rotation, thereby allowing the connecting rod 243 to be moved to the left (Fig. 2) and to displace one of the ends 240 of the floating lever 181, which contributes in part to the movement resulting from its movement. central part 248 (fig. 9), so that the latter can move away from the lower arm 249 by an angled lever 251.
The other arm of the angled lever 251 is provided with a stepped end 252 intended to hold the release lever 253 in the position where it disengages the shaft 48 actuating the elevator. However, when the crank lever 251 is moved by the central portion 248 of the floating lever 181, which can only occur after the combined movement of the connecting rod 243 and the bar 175, the extreme front portion 252 of the crank lever 251 receives a sufficient lifting movement to allow the spring 254 (fig. 13) of the release lever 253 to move the latter away from its working position,
thereby releasing the driven element 255 from the elevator clutch 256 and establishing a driving connection with the shaft 48.
The control of the floating lever 181 is subject to the following two given conditions: 1. a lift signal must have been sounded; 2. the delivery sliding arm 245 (fig. 1) must occupy its extreme right position, or dextrorsum, this in turn indicating that the line delivery slide is ready to receive from the elevator another line of dies composed . Thus, as the elevator control shaft 48 is controlled by means of the angled lever 251 by the floating lever 181, this shaft is only actuated when the two aforementioned conditions have been fulfilled.
When, after a previous operation, the elevator has been properly recalled and another elevator control signal is subsequently received, control energy is communicated through the pinion 47 and the element. leading from clutch 256 to driven member 255 of said clutch and shaft 48. Clutch 255 - 256 is of the single cycle or turn type. As shown in fig. 13, each of the clutch shafts 45, 48 and 50 carries a corresponding retaining disc or cam 239, 421 or 422, which cooperates with a corresponding retaining lever 237, 423 or 424. The cam 421 cooperates with an elbow lever 425 , which itself cooperates with the release lever 253 to limit the rotation of the elevator clutch mechanism to a single revolution.
The cyclical rotation of the shaft 48, causing in its movement an elevator cam 256 ', raises the arm 257, which itself rotates an elevator shaft 258 extending transversely to the keyboard (Figs. 2 and 9). . The left end of shaft 258, as seen in fig. 2, carries an arm 259 which is provided with a sturdy coil spring 261 (fig. 2 and 5), one end of which is fixed to a projection of the arm 259 and the other end of which is fixed to a pin 262 ( fig. 7) fixed to the machine frame.
The elevator 247 is connected via a connecting rod 263 (fig. 1) to the arm 259. The contour of the cam 256 'is such that it causes, via the arm 257 and the shaft 258, the movement of the arm 259 to perform the raising and lowering of the elevator 247 by cooperating with the spring <B> 261. </B>
A finger 264 (fig. 9) carried by the arm 257 of the elevator shaft is arranged so as to extend above a horizontal arm 265 of an elbow lever 266 which pivots at 415 and whose l The other arm is connected to one end of a connecting rod 416 (Fig. 18). The other end of the connecting rod 416 is connected to a lower elbow of a release caliper 417 (fig. 9), which is normally biased to pivot in the dextrorsal direction (looking at fig. 18), by a spring 267. , around a pivot 418.
As shown in fig. 9, the caliper 417 is provided with an arm 268 by means of which it can engage with the upper end of the release lever 172, as will emerge from the following. During the upward movement of arm 257, when the elevator mechanism is initially set in motion, finger 264 is raised away from arm 265, allowing spring 267 to rotate yoke 417 as well as, through the connecting rod 416, the bent lever 266. The clutch lever 172 is thus maintained in the desired position to disengage the clutch 49 from the shaft 45 controlling the recording reader.
When the arm 257 is lowered again, after the elevator has delivered its load of dies to the delivery slider, the finger 234 again engages the projection 265 of the elbow lever 266, thus allowing the lever to move. clutch 172, by means of the connecting rod 416 and the caliper 417, to be brought away from the working position and immediately release the driven element 170 to establish the drive connection of this element with the shaft 45 in order to restart the tape probing operation.
During the work cycle of the elevator and as the shaft 48 rotates, the T-lever 164 is held for a short period of time in its extreme sinistrorsum position by the offset portion 176 of the slide bar 175, which is engaged with the shoulder 177 of the lever 178 (fig. 9).
Shortly after shaft 48 has started to rotate, cam 270 for releasing the trigger lever engages side arm 271 of this lever 178 and rotates it downward dextrorsum about its pivot. 272 at an angle sufficient to allow the offset portion 176 of the sliding bar 175 to come to rest over the shoulder 177, thus releasing the lever 164 and allowing it to return to its dextrorsum position under the action of the spring 165.
By thus causing the lever 164 to move, the spring 166 also releases the disengaging lever 172 by means of the connecting rod 169, at the same time as the floating lever 181 is partially returned to its normal position by the intermediary of its connection 241 with the bar 175, which allows the angled lever 251 to again present itself in the desired position to hold the release lever 253 in its effective locking position. The shaft 48 then ends its cycle and comes to rest again when its bevelled tab (identical to the tab 233 of the clutch 49) engages again in the opening of the lever 253.
When the elevator shaft is thus actuated, it performs one complete rotation, during which it performs all of its functions, including maintaining the tape drive shaft 45 in its stop position, followed by unlocking this tree and its own unlocking.
Fig. 10 shows the delay mechanism for double characters, which comprises levers 273 and 274, contacts 275 and 276, and a caliper 277. In the ordinary composition, during which character matrices are distributed in irregular succession, any device die distributor 208 (fig. 3) has sufficient time to return by itself to its normal state and thus be ready again for a subsequent operation, although the time it takes to complete its cycle working time is a little longer than that required by the control unit to complete its own work cycle.
On the other hand, when a given signal is repeated one or more times, the working speed of the control unit is greater than the speed at which the dialing machine can be controlled, since in this In this case, its matrix distributor does not have sufficient time to be brought back to its normal state. The apparatus is therefore provided with means which, under the influence of consecutively repeated signals, automatically introduce into the operation of the control unit a delay period suitable for adapting the speed of this unit to that of the composing machine. . .
On the tape drive shaft 45 is mounted a cam 281 (fig. 10) which cooperates with a cam roller 282 mounted at the end of one of the arms 283 of a lever 274 pivoting about an axis. pivot 284. The lever 274 is also provided with arms 285 and 286. The arm 285 controls two contacts 275 and 276 associated with a timing mechanism which will be described later, and it also cooperates with an arm 287 of a control lever. blocking 273 to return the lever 273 to an unlocked position, as will emerge from the following.
At the upper edge of each of the intermediate selector bars 115 is provided a sawtooth cam projection 288 which is integral with the bar, each of said projections 288 being able to occupy one or the other of two positions depending on the position that it is. occupies the corresponding intermediate selector bar 115. Between these two positions and on the path of movement of the projections 288 are arranged a series of anti-friction rollers 289 (at the rate of one roller for each bar 115) carried by a shaft <B> 291 </B> twirling in a retaining clip 277.
The bracket 277 pivots at 292 on the main frame of the device, and a spring 293 normally urges it downwards, in the direction of a restraint. In either of their positions, the cam projections 268 are located on one side or the other of the rollers 289 arranged transversely, but when they pass from one position to the other, said protrusions act on the rollers 289 causing the caliper 277 to move upwards by a cam action.
The caliper 277 is provided with an arm 294 which, when said caliper thus receives an upward movement by this cam action, acts so as to rotate the locking lever 273 around its pivot 295 in the direction of x - trorsum. An adjustment screw is provided at the end of the arm 294 to establish an adjustable relationship between the caliper 277 and the locking lever 273.
The locking lever 273 also has a W-shaped notch 296 which is intended to cooperate with a spring-loaded retaining arm 297. The lever 273 is further provided with a shoulder 298 intended to cooperate with the arm 286 of the lever. 274. The cam 281 has a rest portion 299, a lower portion 301 and an upper portion 302. When the roller 282 rests on the rest portion 299, the arm 286 of the lever 274 is kept out of the way of the shoulder of blocking 298. Thus, when the lever 273 is actuated to come to its dextrorsum position, the shoulder 298 comes in the way of the end of the arm 286, thus preventing a sinistrorsum movement of the lever 274.
On the contrary, when the lever 273 is held in its sinistrorsum position (as shown in Fig. 10) by the retaining arm 297, a sinistrorsum movement of the lever 274 is made possible.
As mentioned above, besides the arm 285 controls the pair of contacts 275 and 276, it is intended to cooperate with the arm 287 of the locking lever 273. Thus, when the lever 273 has been brought to its position dextrorsum to block the sinistrorsum movement of the lever 274, this lever 273 is returned during each cycle to its sinistrorsum position by the action of the arm 285 on the arm 287, this being due to the fact that, during each of the cycles of rotation of cam 281,
the upper portion 302 of this cam communicates to the lever 274 a dextrorsum rotation of sufficient amplitude to raise the arm 285 so that it cooperates with the arm 287 to cause the lever 273 to pivot and bring it to its sinistrorsum position.
The role of the arm 285 of the lever 274 is to close the contacts 275 and 276 whenever the lever 274 is not blocked by the lever 273 and, for this purpose, the lever 274 can turn fully in the sinistrorsum direction when the Cam roller 282 descends on the lower part 301 of cam 281 under the action of spring 303.
During normal operation, when there are no consecutively repeating characters, the probe levers <B> 126 </B> occupy either their sinistrorsum position or their dextrorsum position, depending on whether code perforations are or are not present in the tape 131, after -which, when the transfer caliper 121 receives an oscillating movement in synchronism with the sounding or reading operation of the tape.
one or the other of the stops 124, 125 cooperates with one or the other of the stops 122, 123 to cause the levers 118 to oscillate in a corresponding manner, thereby moving the intermediate selector bars 115 either to the right or to the left, depending on whether the associated levers 118 have received a sinistrorsum or dextrorsum oscillation. When the intermediate selector bars 115 are moved to the right or to the left, the cam protrusions 288 of these bars act, through the arm 294 of the caliper 277, so as to rotate the locking lever 273 until 'to its dextrorsum (or right) position
to bring the shoulder 298 to the locked position with respect to the arm 286 of the lever 274, which prevents the lever 274, at a later point in the cycle, from following the cam and engaging in the lower portion 301 of the cam 281. It follows that the contacts 275 and 276 remain open.
Then, when the cycle which has just been described is about to end, the upper portion 302 of the cam 281 causes a slight pivoting of the lever 274 to cause the arm 285 to cooperate with the arm 287 in order to bring back lever 273 in its left position or sinistrorsum. When a repeated code signal is probed on the tape, the probe levers 126 are first positioned according to the initial appearance of said repeated code signal, as just described in connection with a normal operation, since with regard to the tape probing mechanism, it is not yet known whether the signal will be repeated.
However, at the start of the repeat cycle (i.e., repetition of the code signal), the probe levers 126 have already been positioned according to the code punctures of the repeated code signal. As a result, there is no movement of the intermediate selector bars 115, nor therefore of the cam protrusions 288, so that the position of the locking lever 273 does not change, this lever remaining in the position that it does. it occupies in fig. 10, and that the arm 286 of the lever 274 is not blocked.
Consequently, the lever 274 does not have, at this time, the possibility of following the cam 281, so that when the roller 283 falls into the lower portion 301, the lever 274 obeys the tension of the spring 303 and turns in the sinistrorsum direction to close the contacts 275 and 276 and thus control the operation of a de-time mechanism generally signed by 304 (fig. 10 and 15), mounted at the top of the tape reader 54.
The contact 276 is connected with one of the electros 305 of the time mechanism 304, and the closing of the contact 276 under the influence of the repeated code signal causes the excitation of this electro and the sinistrorsum rotation of its armature 306 overcoming the action of a spring 307, such that said armature disengages from a stop disk 308 to begin the rotation of an associated set of cams carried by a time shaft 309 in order to ensure the delay pertaining to the double character, as will be described later. The speed of rotation of the shaft in time is predetermined so as to ensure an appropriate delay.
Reference will now be made to the electrical assembly circuit of FIG. 15. An electro <B> 311 </B> serving to control the rotation of the shaft 45 of the tape drive is normally de-energized, which allows the clutch 49 of this shaft to be engaged (see also Fig. 12 and 13) to allow rotation of shaft 45. This shaft carries a cam 312 (Fig. 13) serving to cyclically actuate a pulsating contact 313 (Fig. 12 and 15).
The clutch 314 of the transfer camshaft, which is similar to the clutch 49 is controlled by an electro 315 via its frame 330 (FIG. 13) in the form of an angled lever. Under normal conditions, the electro 315 is energized towards the end of the tape reader cycle by the pulsating contact 313, in order to cause the rotation of the transfer camshaft 50 and the control of the selector mechanism with a view to l completion of the normal cycle of this mechanism.
It will be noted that the control circuit (fig. 15) relating to the electro 315 passes through a rest contact 316 of a relay 317, so that the excitation of this relay cuts this circuit and prevents normal operation. clutch 314.
Contacts 321 to 328 (Fig. 15) are selectively actuated under the control of the lower projections 319 of the intermediate selector bars 115 (Fig. 10) by means of a series of clamps 320 which are associated with the contacts and actuated selectively. in accordance with a coded arrangement of notches and guards provided at the lower edges of said projections <B> 319. </B> Contact 323 is a universal contact which closes whenever one of contacts 321, 322 or 324 at 328 closes.
When contact 323 closes, it establishes a circuit which, starting from the positive of battery 329, passes through universal contact 323, wires 331, 332, 333 and 334, the coils of electro 311 (fig. 13 and 15), to earth, which excites the electro 311. A circuit is also established which, starting from the battery, passes through the universal contact 323, the wires 331, 332 and 335 and the relay coil. 317 down to earth. While operating, relay 317 opens contact 316 and closes contact 336.
The closing of contact 336 establishes a blocking circuit of electro 311, which circulates, starting from the earth, passes through this electro, wire 334, contact 336 (now closed), wire 337, control contacts 338 and 339 of the dialing machine 341, one wire 342, one manual contact 343 of the control device, one wire 344, and three normal-closed contacts 345, 346 and 347 of the time mechanism 304, and results in battery 348.
In performing the dual character delay function alluded to earlier, universal contact 323 is not actuated (i.e. closed) but contacts 275 and 276 close under the control. control lever 274, as previously described. Closing of contact 275 establishes a circuit for energizing electro 311, which circuit, starting from battery 349, passes through contact 275, wires 351, 332, 333 and 334 and the coil of electro 311 and ends in the earth. At the same time, a circuit for energizing relay 317 is established as follows: battery 349, contact 275 (now closed), wires 351, 332 and 335, coil of relay 317 and earth.
While operating, the relay 317 establishes, through its contact 336 (now closed), a blocking circuit of the electro 311 and which was previously traced. Relay 317 is also maintained by the same blocking circuit comprising wires 335 and 333 and contact 336. Contact 316, held open during the delay period, prevents the control unit electro-315 from turning. operate, even though the pulsating contact 313 closes cyclically.
The opening of any one of the elements of the series of contacts provided in the holding circuit of relay 317 and of electro 311 can be effected at the desired moment to trigger the blocking relay 317 so as to reset. the tape reader is on. The time mechanism 304 is composed of three separate time elements with friction control (shown in fig. 14), each of these elements being controlled by an individual trigger device placed under the control of an individual electro 305, 352 and 353 (fig. 14 and 15).
Returning to the description of the double character delay function, it will be assumed that two consecutive E code signals are encountered in the recording tape 131 and that it is desired to interpose an appropriate delay between the first action of the E key lever 57 and the second action of the same lever E on the composing machine, such a delay being necessary to allow the machine to complete its function in response to the first action before the second action of the same key lever is performed. The first E is probed by the tape reader in the usual manner and, towards the end of the probing cycle, the pulsating contact 313 momentarily closes.
This results in the excitation of the electro 315 of the control unit, which then transfers the positions of the intermediate selector bars 115 to the code bars 77. Continuation of the cycle has the effect that the key lever E is actuated for the first time.
While the work cycle is in progress, the tape reader probes the second E recorded on the tape. Since the combination of perforations in the tape is the same as that previously present, none of the intermediate selector bars 115 move as a result of this new probing. This causes the actuation of the double character contactor mechanism shown in FIG. 10, composed of contacts 275 and 276. Closing contact 276, in the manner previously described, exits electro 305 from one of the sections of timing mechanism 304 by a circuit which emerges clearly from the wire. -. 15, thereby allowing the associated cam assembly to begin its rotation.
As described above, the contact 275 closes at the same time and performs the excitation and the blocking of the electro tape reader 3l-1, as well as the excitation and the blocking of the relay 317, by causing the stopping of the tape reader 54 at the end of the cycle which has just been mentioned and also by preventing the triggering of the control mechanism of the key levers by the pulsating contact 313, since the contact 316 is kept open .
At this point, therefore, the tape reader has read two E-code signals in succession, then has been stopped, the selector mechanism has chosen an E-character matrix and has been stopped, and the mechanism in time has started. - started a work cycle aimed at inserting the appropriate delay to allow the machine to be conditioned to allow the selection of the second E character matrix. When the section of the time mechanism 304 which has just been released and thus enabled to rotate by the electro 305 reaches the end of a third of a turn (fig. 14), a cam 354 closes a contact 355. ,
which establishes an excitation circuit for the electro 315 of the control unit, which circuit, starting from the battery 348, ends in the earth passing through the contact 355 (now closed momentarily), the wires 356 and 357 and the coil of the electro 315. The cam 358 of said section of the timing mechanism 304 opens the contact 345 thus opening the blocking circuit (previously described) of the relay 317 and of the electro 311, the tape reader. 54 being therefore put back into action. When this occurs, the selector mechanism performs the selective action of the key lever E on the machine for the second time, and the tape reader 54 proceeds to read the next code signal from the tape.
It will be mentioned that this entire operation does not involve an idle rotation of the tape drive shaft during which the tape does not advance, and that the time mechanism operates so as to delay by a period of. time measured the selection of the second character matrix E as well as the probing of the next code signal.
Another function of the composer which requires a measured time delay is the lower top rail travel function, which is in some respects similar to the double character delay. Reference is made in this regard to fia. 10 and 15. The contact 321, operating under the influence of a predetermined positioning of the intermediate selector bars 115, controls the intercalation of the delay assigned to the upper-lower rail displacement function. It will be recalled that contact 323 is a universally controlled contact and that it closes with any one of contacts 321 and 322 and contacts 324 to 328. Thus, under the influence of the sounding of the rail displacement code signal , contacts 321 and 323 close momentarily.
The closing of the contact 323 causes the operation of the electro 311 of the tape reader, which stops the reading operation. At the same time, the relay 317 acts to establish a blocking circuit for the electro 311. Before the stopping of the ribbon advance cycle, the pulsating contact 313 is actuated, but this has no effect. effect on the <B> 315 </B> electro since contact 316 has been opened.
Closing of contact 321 causes electro 352 to be energized to begin rotating that of the sections of timing mechanism 304 which controls the rail travel delay. The cam 359 causes the closing, by a contact 362, of an excitation circuit of the electro 315, which starting from the battery 348, passes through the contact 362, the wire 357 and the coil of the electro 315 and leads to the earth, which triggers the operation of the selector mechanism to perform the selective operation of the selectable bar 182 (fig. 5) of rail displacement,
to control the movement of the top rail 217 in the manner previously described. The cam 361 causes the opening of the contact 347 and, consequently, the rupture of the blocking circuit of the relay 317 and the restarting of the reader. tape by de-energizing the electro 311.
When composing typographical lines to be printed, it is customary to end all lines, except certain short lines, with a fixed margin on the right. In composing machines, this operation, called justification, is carried out using extensible space bands which insert spaces between the words. At the end of a row, if the degree of widening provided by the interposition of space bands is sufficient to give the row a length such that it fills the necessary column width, we say that the row is justi reliable. It sometimes happens that a compound line that is smaller than the correct length is too long to accommodate the next word or the next syllable of that word.
In such cases, the typographer can increase the length of the line by inserting in the vicinity of the space bands fixed space matrices, which are matrices without characters, of uniform thickness.
The distribution of fixed matrix spaces intended for a line of insufficient length is controlled automatically without it being necessary to interpose additional signals associated with the distribution of fixed matrix spaces, such a distribution being obtained by modification of one or more of the spaceband signals existing in the line.
This modification consists of punching one or more additional code perforations in the ribbon to convert the ordinary band space signal into an extraordinary band space signal intended to cause the distribution of a fixed space matrix at the same time. than that of a space band, as shown in fig. 20 which represents the recorded code signals serving to successively control the selection of a single fixed matrix space, single tape space, and both fixed matrix space and band space .
When the combination of perforations 0 - 3 which is assigned to the extraordinary band space signal and which, as will be seen, comprises a band space perforation or N 3 perforation to which has been added a perforation d The fixed space or NC perforation, is probed by the tape reader 54, the intermediate selector bars 115 are brought to corresponding positions to effect the selection and the closing of the contact 322 (fig. 15). As mentioned above, universal contact 323 also closes.
Closing contact 322 establishes a circuit to energize electro 353 of timing mechanism 304, which circuit runs from battery 329 to ground through contact 322, wire 364 and coil of electro 353. At the same time, the closing of the universal contact 323 causes the excitation of the electro 311 and the blocking of the relay 317 by means of the circuits previously described, which stops the tape reader at the end of its cycle. and cuts, on contact 316, the normal control circuit of the electro 315.
The distribution of space bands 365 from space tapes magazine 366 (fig. 1) is effected by the lifting movement of a special distributor blade 367, which is controlled by the selector mechanism shown in fig. . 3.
One of the ends of a lever 368 pivoting around a point 369 between its ends is connected to the distribution blade 367, the other end being connected to the mechanism 371 for escaping the space bands. Closing of contact 322 thus controls operation of electro 353 in order to begin the rotation of that of the sections of time mechanism 304 which controls the time interval relating to the added fixed space signal. Cam 372 is provided with two cam protrusions 374 and 375 for controlling the
contact 376, and the cam 373 is provided with a single cam projection 377 for controlling the contact 346. Thus, during the rotation of the added fixed space section of the timing mechanism 304, the first projection 374 of the cam 372 causes contact 376 to close for the first time (contact 346 controlled by cam 373 does not open at this time), which establishes an excitation circuit for electro 315 as follows:
battery 348, contact 376, wire 357, coil of electro 315 and earth, which circuit triggers the operation of the selector mechanism to accomplish a cycle during which this mechanism selectively activates the mechanism 371 effecting the escape of the space bands in the machine, in order to free up a band space 365 of the magazine 366, this band space thus being able to fall into the elevator-composer 215.
At the end of the first working cycle of the selector mechanism, which has just been described, the time mechanism 304, acting under the action of a second command of the contact 376 by the second cam projection 375, again triggers The selector mechanism is used to select a fixed matrix space of the magazine 213. However, it is carried out, essentially simultaneously with the second closing of the contact 376, a conditioning or code change operation of the selector mechanism. , as follows: note (fig. 10 and 14) that another cam 378 is provided in the added fixed space section of time mechanism 304.
This cam 378 operates in a determined time ratio with the second closing of contact 376 and with the resulting excitation of electro 315, so as to trigger a second work cycle of the selector mechanism to allow a bar 379 change of code (fig. 10) to be moved to the left. This is done with the aid of the cam 378 (fig. 10) acting on an elbow lever 381 which pivots at 382 and is normally biased in the dextrorsum direction by a spring 383.
An arm 384 of the angled lever 381 cooperates with a horizontal arm of an intermediate angled lever 385 pivoting at 386, the other arm of this lever 385 extending downwardly to cooperate with a hooked end of the shift bar. code 379. Bar 379 is mounted to slide on pins 387 and is normally subjected to the action of a spring 388 which tends to pull it to the left.
Consequently, at the end of the first cycle, the timing mechanism 304 performs, as a result of the second action of the contact 376, a new trip of the selector mechanism, and the cam 378 causes the operation of the code change mechanism, this code change resulting from the displacement of the code legs 389 carried by the bar 379 in order to block the selection of the space-band selector bar and to unblock the thin space selector bar, so that the thin space distributor blade (not shown)
is actuated in this second cycle instead of the space band dispenser blade 367. After the completion of this second cycle, the contact 346 is actuated by its cam 373, which causes the breaking of the blocking circuit of the relay 317 and the restarting of the tape reader by the de-energization of the electro 311.
The apparatus is also provided with means by which the selector mechanism is conditioned, under the influence of the first 0-3 or extraordinary space-band signal or extraordinary appearing in a row, so as to free a fixed space-matrix in response to each of the subsequent spaceband signals on the line, regardless of whether such a subsequent spaceband signal is the ordinary signal (N 3 perforation) or whether that signal has been converted to a d signal Extraordinary band space (combination of perforations 0-3).
In other words, the apparatus is provided with means suitable for allowing the release of fixed space-bands and space-matrices dependent on the sole modification of the first space-band signal of the line. , after which the mechanism automatically adds a fixed space matrix to each of the following space bands on the rest of the line, then the lift signal, which occurs at the end of the line, restores the normal state of the line. disposition.
This result is obtained in the manner which will be described below with reference to FIG. 18 on the lower portion 319 of the intermediate selector bar 390 of fixed space or O (of the group of intermediate selector bars 115) are pivotally mounted two cooperating T-levers 392 and 393. The lever 392, pivoting at 394, is provided with a vertical arm 395 terminated by a shoulder forming a latch 396 and a horizontal arm 397 terminated by a portion 398 which is directed downwards and which coincides with a notch made in the lower edge of the portion facing towards the bottom. bottom 3.19 of the intermediate selector bar 390.
The lever 392 is normally biased in the dextrorsum direction by a spring 399. The arm 395 of this lever behaves like a latch by cooperating with the end of an arm 402 of the lever 393 pivoting at 403. The lever 393 is also provided. an arm 404 which extends downward and the free end of which is intended to play the role of a guard which would be provided at the lower edge of the downwardly facing portion 319 of the bar 390. The arm 404 of lever 393 is also provided with a portion 405 which extends laterally and which is intended to cooperate with a screw 406 fixed in an adjustable manner to an arm 407 of an angled lever 408 pivotally mounted at 403.
The contact 322 discussed above is controlled by one of the calipers 320. The base portion 409 of the caliper in question 320 is placed below the downward facing portion 398 of the lever 392 when the intermediate selector bar 390 occupies its right position. However, when this bar 390 occupies its left position, the downwardly facing portion 398 of the lever 392 is located away from the path followed by the base 409 of the caliper 320, and the lower end of the arm 404 ( assuming that levers 392 and 393 are still mutually locked, as shown in Fig. 18) has been brought above said base portion 409 to prevent selection of caliper 320, so that contact 322 does not not close.
However, if the levers 392 and 393 have been unlocked, this having been done by the base portion of the caliper 320 acting so as to close the contact 322 when the intermediate selector bar 390 occupies its right-hand position, the end lower part of the arm 404 will not have the possibility of obstructing the selection of the caliper 320, so that the contact 322 will close, regardless of the position (right or left) occupied by said intermediate selector bar .
It can thus be seen that, thanks to this movable guard formed by the end of the arm 404, the arrangement which has just been described constitutes a means of conditioning the control apparatus in such a way that the first probing of the combination of perforations 0 -3 (411, fig. 20) corresponding to the extraordinary space-band signal establishes a set of conditions by which the same caliper 320 will subsequently be selected as a result of the probing of the perforation N 3 (412, fig. 20) corresponding to the ordinary space-band signal.
The value of this arrangement lies in the fact that fixed space-matrices are automatically added to space-bands over the entire extent of the remainder of a line as a result of the typographer or the person operating the tape puncher. modified only a recorded space-to-band signal that occurred earlier in that same row.
The movable guard constituted by the end of the arm 404 is put back in position at the end of the line in the following manner: on the elevator shaft 48 (fig. 18) is fixed a return cam 412 ' which is intended to cooperate with a sliding bar 413 articulated to the lever 408 which is normally biased in the sinistrorsum direction (looking at FIG. 18) by a spring 414. The bar 413 is thus itself maintained in its left position, in cooperative relation with the cam 412 ', by said spring 414.
Then, when the shaft 48 is released for a cycle (or a rotation) under the influence of the lift signal (or end of line signal), the cam 412 'momentarily urges the bar 413 to the right to communicate. a dextrorsal movement to the lever 408, after which the screw 406 carried by the arm 407 of this lever cooperates with a portion 405 of the lever 393 to rotate the latter in the dextrorsum direction and thus establish a locking connection between the arm 402 of said lever and the shoulder 396 of the lever 392.
It has also been shown in FIG. 15 a contact device 426 forming part of a series of safety contact devices included in the dialing machine 341, the closing of any of the contact devices 426 causing the operation of the apparatus to stop control previously described. When such a shutdown has taken place and after the disturbance in the machine has been remedied, the control unit can be restarted by manually opening contact 343. When the automatic control unit is on. In the idle state, the manually operated contact 426 is held closed to establish an obvious excitation circuit for the electro 311.
It will be recalled that the excited state of the electro 311 maintains the clutch 49 of the tape probing mechanism in the disengaged state. A hand switch 427 enables the electro 311 to be switched on and the clutch 49 to be disengaged. Reading of the tape is then prevented and the keyboard 22 can be operated without the control unit intervening. Contacts 324 to 328 inclusive are associated with positioning devices such as those relating to the formation of a withdrawal at the head of the line or a blank at the end of the line or to the centering of the line and to the selection. upper and lower magazines, such devices not having been described because they do not form part of the present invention.
