Par exemple, si l'on enfonce la touche por tant le numéro 1, le courant venant de la gé- n6ratrice 65 passe par une ligne 170, arrive à l'électro-aimant marqué 1 et, .de là, par une ligne marquée 1, une ligne 171 et le contact gauche de la touche 1;
Le relais est .connecté à un conducteur 176 allant jusqu'au point où le conducteur CU est connecté au contact d'interrupteur gauche 66b. Ainsi, lorsqu'on enfonce l'une de ces touches portant des nu méros pairs, 1e relais R-III est également mis sous tension. Considérons, par exemple, la touche 2;
Les -contacts de touche inférieurs 105 (fig. 7) sont ainsi fermés, les circuits sont fermés, les contacts 104 étant maintenant ouverts, car les circuits décrits ci-dessus sont ouverts à l'interrupteur. Con sidérons la touche 0 et les touches portant un numéro impair;
Statistics card punch machine. This invention relates to a machine for punching statistical cards, which cards are then used on an accounting machine to control the operation to be performed and to record or calculate the operations represented by the perforations made on the cards.
The machine according to the invention comprises a series of punches and a positioning mechanism, intended to operate the selection of the punches which are to be brought into the operating position. It is characterized in that it has a set of keys that can be coupled in different ways to control, through the positioning mechanism, the positioning of the punches respectively in different sections of the series of punches. .
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, one embodiment of the machine according to the invention, intended to punch new cards having a greater number of columns than hitherto, corresponding to the new ones. accounting machines.

Fig. 12 is a drawing of a type of card capable of being punched on the machine.
The ordinary statistical card has 45 columns, in which perforations can be made to represent statistical or other information and the ordinary accounting machine has a corresponding capacity, recording or totaling the information thus entered in the 45 columns of the ordinary card. However, accounting machines have been developed that can record the information in 90 columns instead of 45.
The ordinary card punching machine has a series of punches and a punch control mechanism, including a keypad, allowing the punches to be released at will, so as to make the desired holes in the desired position, on the maps.
In the embodiment shown in the drawings and described in detail below, two sets of keys are provided and the machine is specially constructed for punching a card of the type shown in FIG. 12, card having three sections <I> a, b </I> and c, in which the perforations must be made. Section a comprises the left side of the map and sections b and c include the upper and lower halves of the right side of the map, respectively.
The punch machine has 45 rows of punches, corresponding to the 45 columns of the card, and the keys of the first set are used to selectively actuate the punches in successive rows, in the ordinary way, to effect. the perforations in section a of the card.
The keys of the second set are used for punch selection to make the perforations to be made in section b of the card and to select the punches for the perforations to be made in section c of the card.
In each of these sections b and c, the card is punched by the punches of the punch section comprising half of the punches in each row. The keys of the second set are activated, for a certain operation, so as to make the selection - according to a certain combination or code - of one or two punches in each half-row of the section of punches,
making perforations in section b of the card and,: in another combination, the keys select, according to another system, one or two punches in the other half-rows, making the perforations in the, section c -of the card, a control device determining the way in which the set of keys is coupled to effect the maneuver of the punches.
The machine shown can be maneuvered to punch the card after the two sets of keys have been used successively to select the punches, so as to perform perforations on sections a and b of the card, then the keys of the second. set can be used again to -f make the perforations -in section e; then this section of the card is punched again and the card is ejected from the machine.
The machine can also be modified so as to first operate the punches so that they make perforations on the three sections <I> a, b </I> and c of the card, the card being punched in a single operation and ejection of the machine.
It will be understood that the perforation of a card in the manner indicated in FIG. 12 increases the recording capacity of the card by means of perforations, since each of the columns of the card in the part of sections b and c is divided into two columns and thus makes it possible to represent two different groups of information. We understand that sections b and c could be extended to the left of the map of the fie.
12, so as to reduce the importance of the section cz, this section can even be omitted, so that the -card now only has the upper and lower sections b and c, so as to double the -capacity of the map which, from a 45-column map, thus becomes a 90-column e; z_-te.
It is also understood that the machine shown could be used to perforate the ordinary 45-column card, in the ordinary way, using the first set (the keys only to select the punches to perforate the entire card, at the same time). # 3u to use these keys to select the punches which only perform perforations on section a of the card shown in fig. 12.
The cards 15 (fig. 2) to be punched are placed in a magazine 16 (fig. 2 and 5) from which they are removed, one at a time, by an ejector 18, actuated by a lever 19 mounted on the bottom. vot on an axis 20. The card, leaving the store, is brought by rollers 30 -and 31, in the perforation position, below a series of punches 115 and above a pile 78. In this position , the map is. frictionally held by feed rollers 33 and by a stopper 34. When the card has been properly perforated, the stopper 34 is lowered, as described later, and the feed rollers 33 feed the card to rollers 130 which guide the map in a store sin 131.
The E: jector 18 is a.-extended by an automatic mechanism comprising a shaft 25 mounted on bearings 26 (fig. 1), carrying an eccentric plate 21 surrounded by an eccentric strip 22 terminated by an arm 23 articulated at 24 at the lower end of lever 19. Thus, a rotation of the shaft causes a complete reciprocating movement of the ejector 18.
The shaft 25 also actuates a 'control' device constituted by a switch 66, which will be described later, this shaft 25 being provided for this purpose with an eccentric 67 surrounded by an eccentric strip 68 terminated by an arm 69 articulated. abutment 72 with a cam 70, the movement of which actuates the switch and which is mounted on a shaft 71.
The shaft 25 further controls the card latch 34 by means of a cam 126 on the periphery of which runs a roller 127 mounted on an elbow lever 128, pivoting on a shaft 124 and the other end of which supports the card latch. menu. A spring 129 tends to keep the roller 127 applied against the periphery of the cam 126; the card stopper is lowered when the roller enters a recess 125 formed on the periphery of the cam.
The shaft 25 is driven at a speed equal to half that of a main shaft 29, by means of toothed wheels 27, 28. Thus the shaft 29 makes two revolutions while the shaft 25 does. one and the ejector 18, cam 70 and card latch 34 each perform one full back and forth movement or wobble for two full turns of shaft 29. The purpose of this operation will be described. later.
The positioning of the punches 115 is effected by keys 35 or 36 of two, sets of keys 37 and 38, shown in FIG. 11. When pressing a key 35 or 36, a system of contacts and circuits which will be described later, energize one or more electromagnets 40 of the group of electromagnets shown in FIG. 1 and in the upper left part of fig. 7.
As seen in fig. 10, each electromagnet has a pusher 41 which rises when the electromagnet is energized and which, by means of a flexible 42, actuates an elbow lever 43. Each flexible 42 is mounted in a sheath flexible 46 fixed, at one end, on the housing of the electromagnet and, at the other end, on a body 47. Each electromagnet has a lever 43; these levers 43 are pivotally mounted on a shaft 44 mounted in turn on a carriage 45 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 and parts of which are also shown in FIG. 10 and also support the body 47.
The cart 45 is mounted on rollers 50 and 51 rolling on guides 48, 49; The carriage is advanced to the right (fig. 1) by a mechanism which is not shown, step by step, using a click mechanism of the standard type. This mechanism comprises a bar 52 (fig. 1) actuated by the angled levers 43 and coupled to actuate the escape pawls 53, 54 engaging a ratchet wheel 55 mounted on the carriage, on which. Is fixed a 55ca pinion engaged on a 551 chainring mounted on guide 49.
The exhaust mechanism is actuated on each return stroke of the bar 52, under the action of a lever 43, so that the carriage is advanced from one perforation position to another. A bar 56 is mounted: pivotally on the elbow lever 43 which controls it, the lever and the bar being returned to their original position after each movement, by a spring 58 (FIG. 10).
Below the raceway of the carriage 45 is a fixed basket 59 containing a group of 540 smoothing pushers 60, arranged in forty-five rows of twelve pushers. These pushers are provided with stop pins 61, which, when the pous evenings are lowered, are released on notches formed in grooves 62 of vL-rrouillage slides 63, 64, described later and which are normally pushed back. to the right (fig. 2) by springs 63a.
Underneath the basket 59 and above the series of punches 115 there is a box 116, in which are mounted pushers 117, normally pushed upwards by spells, as shown in FIG. 2. The number of pushers 117 and of punches 115 corresponds to the number of control pushers 60.
The punches 115 are mounted on a fixed plate 115a and are guided by a movable plate 123a which, with the pile 78, are supported by a frame 123, on which the shaft 124 is also mounted and which is moved vertically by a lever 121 pivoting at 122 and carrying a roller 120 rolling on a groove 119 of a cam 118 fixed on the shaft 29.
Thus, when a key 35 or 36 is pressed, at least one electromagnet 40 is energized and actuates a lever 43 and its control bar 56. The bar 56, by descending it, pushes a pusher back. 60 and the corresponding push-stitch 117; the two pushers are kept lowered by a locking slide 63 or 64.
Thus a pusher 117 is kept lowered, above the punch 115 corresponding to the key which has been lowered. The lever 43 which has been actuated also actuates the universal bar 52 controlling the escape pawls 53, 54, so that, after a pusher 60 has been pushed back, the escape mechanism allows the carriage to advance -d 'a notch to bring the bar 56 above the pushers 60 of the next row.
When a key 35 or 36 is pressed again, a pusher 60 and the corresponding second pusher 117 are depressed and locked in this position, above the punch corresponding to the depressed key. These operations are repeated until the pushers 60 and 117 have been pushed back into all the desired rows.
When the operation of positioning the punches is completed, the card which is in place between the plates 78 and 123a is perforated by rotating the shaft 29, which, using the cam 118 and the lever 121, causes the frame to move back and forth <B> 123. </B> During the upstroke, the card bears against the lower ends of the punches and raises, without being perforated, all the punches which are not kept lowered by the pushrods 117.
The pushers 117 which have been lowered and locked in this position bear against the corresponding punches and prevent them from rising, so that these punches are pushed back through the card and the pile. 78, thus perforating the card.
The shaft 29 makes one revolution when the space bar 17 is pressed (fig. 2 and 11); this operation has the effect of closing, by means of suitable contacts, the circuit of an electromagnet <B> to </B> click 74 (fig. 1) which, when it is energized, disengages a pawl 75 and withdraws it out of the way of a notch 76 of a coupling mechanism 77.
This coupling is of a known type and serves, when it is thus disengaged, to couple the shaft 29 to a shaft 29a (FIG. 1) driven by a motor 164a, shown in FIG. 7, via a shaft 166 (FIG. 1) carrying a worm 165 engaged on a helical wheel 167 mounted on the shaft 29a.
The machine is equipped with a carriage return mechanism, of the ordinary type, by means of which the carriage 45 can be brought back <B> - '</B> left (Fig. 1) before a new setting operation. position or selection of punch punches. This mechanism comprises a slide 81 (fig. 1) sliding on a bar 89 and carrying a stop 85 arranged to bear against another stop 86 mounted on the carriage, the slide being articulated at 94 to a tape 92 passing over a pulley 95 tower being on a shaft 96 mounted on a bracket 97, the ribbon being fixed at its other end at 93 on an electromagnet plate 90.
The plate 90 surrounds a soft iron hub, rotating, fixed on the shaft 29a and energized by closing the electrical circuit when a return key 91 (Fig. 11) is pressed. When the electromagnet is energized, the plate bears on the rotating hub and rotates with it, pulling the slide 81 to the left, so that the latch 85 engages the stop 86 and returns the carriage. The circuit is opened in the ordinary way when the carriage reaches the end of its travel, by the stop against a stopper 100 mounted on a bar 101 and able to slide on this bar and be locked in place using a finger 102. lying on the cleat.
The slide 81 is brought to the right (FIG. 1) by a spring drum 98 and a tape 99 fixed to the slide.
During the return movement of the carriage, the pushers 60 which had been blocked in their lower position during the previous operation, are released by a lever 79, pivotally mounted at 80 on the carriage 45 and bearing a roller 83a. The lever is articulated by a link 87 to a lever 84 pivotally mounted coaxially with the ratchet wheel 55 and bearing a notch 83, on which engages a cam 82 provided on the slide 81 before the ta quet 85 carries against the <B> 86 </B> cleat on the carriage.
The lever 84 first rocks and lowers the roller 88a of the lever 79, then the chain is pulled back and, during its return movement, the roller 83a engages on a number of levers 84a, mounted at pivot at 87a on box 116; these levers row the slides 63 and 64 on the left (fig. 2) against the action of the springs 63a and bind the pushers 60 which are returned to their upper position by the springs - pushers 117.
The carriage 45 can also be brought back to correct an error in positioning in one or more rows of pushers 60, by means of an electromagnetic plate 133 similar to the plate 90 of the return mechanism of the carriage. A metal arm 135 is fixed at one end by a hook 134 on the plate 133 and fixed at its other end to an arm of a lever 136 pivotally mounted at 137 on a bracket 138.
Another arm .du lever 136 is articulated to a link 141, the other end "of the link is fixed to a pin 143 of an arm 145 pivotally mounted at 146 on the bracket 138. The pin engages in a groove 144 at the end of an arm 139, connected by a spring 140 to the end of the arm 1.45. The other end of the arm 139 is pivotally mounted 152 on a rack 148 provided with notches 151 re holding lugs 149 fixed on a fixed bar 150. The rack 148 is provided .de teeth in which engages a pawl 153, pivotally mounted on the -carriage, on the axis 44, and maintained normally raised by a res fate 154.
A lever 155 is also pivotally mounted on the shaft 44 and is articulated by a link 156 to the lever 84. The plate 133 is energized by the closing of a circuit, by pressing a key -d'effect- ment 132 (fig. 11) and, when it is under tension, the plate rotates with the shaft 29a, suf ficient to bring the members of the position shown in fig. 1 in the position shown in FIG. 3, in which the arm 139 has been brought back to the left by the lever 136,
link 141 and spring 140. The -creminder 148 is also moved to the left and the shape of the notches 151 is such that the bar is first lowered so that the pawl 153 engages a tooth of the rack, -so that the carriage is moved forward one notch to the left with the rack. The downward movement of the rack 148 switches the lever 155 and, by means of the links 156 and 87, causes the lever 79 to tilt, so that during the backward movement the roller 83a releases the slides 63, 64 and the push button (s) 60 lowered by mistake.
The parts are returned to the normal position shown in fig. 1 by the spring 147.
The keyboard of the machine comprises two sets of keys 37, 38 (fig. 11), the first set comprising twelve keys 35, numbered from 0 to 9, 11 and 12. The second set, 38, comprises ten S6 keys. numbered -from 0 to 9.
These sets of keys are arranged to enable the punches to be selected for drilling the card 15 in different sections and thus increasing the usability of the card. Fig. 12 shows a map, divided into three sections a, b and c; section a -includes the left side of the map and sections b and c respectively include the upper and lower halves of the right side of the map.
The ordinary card has forty-five vertical columns and twelve horizontal lines, corresponding respectively to the number of rows of punches and the number of punches per row. The horizontal lines are numbered descending, in the order 12, 11, 0, 1, 2 ... 9.
The first set of keys 37, when a card of the type shown in FIG. 12, is used to punch the card on the left section a, although it will be understood that when the machine is used to punch the ordinary forty-five column card, this set of keys can be used to perform perforations over the entire surface of the card. Each key 35 of this group controls the energization of a single electromagnet 40 which actuates a push button 60, depending on the key pressed.
For example, key 12 controls the energization of the electromagnet marked XII on the diagram. shown in fig. 7, and this electromagnet controls the positioning of the pusher 60 and the corresponding punch 115 at the end of each row, this punch perforating the card on the upper line 12.
Likewise, key 11 energizes the electromagnet marked XI in fig. 7 and the punch thus actuated will make a perforation on the second line, 11, of the card. Likewise, the remaining keys 0 to 9 will activate the punches making perforations on the other corresponding lines of the card. Thus, in FIG. 12, the perforations in columns 1 to 4 respectively represent the numbers 1, 0, 11, 12 and the perforations in columns 10 to 16 respectively represent the numbers 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.
As seen in, fig. 8b, the rod 103 of each key 35 actuates a contact 106 which can be closed when the key is pressed. These contacts 106 are shown in the diagram of FIG. 7 by the vertical lines on opposite sides of the numbers 1, 2, 3, etc. The electrical energy required to operate the machine is supplied by a generator 65 (fig. 7) which can be combined into a single motor generator group with the motor 164a.
When any key 35 is pressed, a circuit is closed, comprising the generator and the corresponding electromagnet 40, the electromagnet group being shown on the left part of FIG. 7.
For example, if the key bearing the number 1 is pressed, the current from generator 65 passes through a line 170, arrives at the electromagnet marked 1 and, from there, through a line marked 1, a line 171 and the left contact of key 1;
the two contacts being closed, the current will flow through a line <B> 172, </B> the upper contact of a switch 169 to return to the generator. Thus, if key 1 is pressed, the electromagnet 1 is energized and, likewise, if any other key of this set 37 is pressed, the electromagnet bearing the corresponding number is switched on.
The second set of keys 38 is used to select the punches, at different times, to punch the card on sections b and e. When used to make perforations on section b, the 36 keys control six punches in each row and when used to make perforations on section c, the keys control the remaining six punches in each row. .
That is to say, to make the perforations on section b, we use the punches 12, 11, 10, 1, 2, 3 and to make the perforations on section c, we use the punches 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Since there are only ten keys and six punches per row, for each section a combination or code system is used to select the punches with the keys, some keys selecting a single punch and other keys simultaneously controlling two punches each. A different combination or system is used for each group of punches.
When two punches are selected simultaneously by each of certain keys, it is preferable that one of the two punches is common to all these keys, for example the punch number 3 of the group making the perforation on section b and punch number 9 of the group making the perforation on section c. For example, to make the perforations on section b, when keys 0, 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 are pressed, the individual electromagnets XII, XI, X, I, II, III are energized , while when keys 2, 4, 6 and 8 are pressed, the electromagnets XI, X, I and II are energized and each key will simultaneously energize the electromagnet III.
Thus, referring to fig. 12, for the upper section b, the perforations in columns 22, 23, 24 respectively represent the numbers 0, 7, 0 and for columns 36 to 42, the perforations represent respectively 0, 3, 0, 6, 7 , 3, 2.
When they are used to make the perforations of section e, the keys 0, 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9, when they are pressed, energize the electromagnets IV, V, VI, VII, VIII and IX, while keys 2, 4, 6 and 8 when pressed will energize electromagnets V, VI, VII and VIII and each key will also energize, at the same time, the electromagnet IX.
Thus, referring to FIG. 12, in section c, the perforations of the columns marked 67 to 72 respectively represent the numbers 0. 5, 0, 3, 2, 6. And in columns 87 to 90; the perforations represent the numbers 0, 3, 7, 0 respectively.
The electromagnets of these different combinations are energized by the contacts operated by the keys and by the control device constituted by the switch 66 mentioned above.
Each key 36 acts on a double contact switch shown in FIGS. 8 and Sa. As shown in fig. 2, the switches are mounted on bars 109, and, as shown in fig. 8 and 8a, each switch comprises two pairs of bronze strips 112, one pair carrying contact tips 104 and the other pair carrying contact tips 105.
The strips are mounted on the bar 109 by means of insulating wedges 111 fixed by screws 110 and each test rod 103 is guided in a groove 107 formed in a metal support bracket 108, fixed at one end by the wedges insulating <B> 111 </B> and, at its other end, folded under the contact lamellae and provided with an insulating plate 114 serving to limit the downward movement of the lamellae. The key pin 103 carries an insulating plate 113 which, when the key is depressed, pushes the upper contact blades down again to bring the two contact pairs 104 and 105 into contact.
Thus, when a key is pressed, the two pairs of contacts are closed, but the circuit of a single pair of contacts is only closed, depending on the position of switch 66 which: determines the circuits controlled by the contacts key.
The switch 6'6 -includes -two elastic contact links 66b fixed at one end to a suitable insulating wedge, mounted, as shown in fig. 2, on one of the bars 109. At the opposite ends, the strips 66b are kept separated by an insulating wedge 66a.
Between the blades 66b is a third contact blade <B> 66e </B> (fig. 7). This strip is fixed at one end on the insulating wedge, but its other end is free -and can be brought into contact with one or the other of the two strips 66b. The switch is actuated by the cam 70, mentioned above, one of the lamellae 66b carrying an insulating plate 66d arranged to be actuated by the cam.
When the cam 70 is in the position shown in figs. 2 and 7, the lower or left contact blade 66b is in contact with the central contact <B> 66e </B> and causes a set of circuits and when the cam is in the second position shown in fig. 5, the resilience of the contact blades operates the switch to bring the other contact blade 66b into contact with the central blade 66c to control another set of circuits.
These circuits are reproduced on the diagram of FIG. 7. By first examining key 0 and the keys bearing their odd numbered numbers, we see that the upper right contact, 104, of each of these keys is connected to a common conductor 173 connected to another. conductor, common marked CU, going to left contact 66b of switch 66.
If the 0 key is pressed, the current coming from the generator 65 passes through the conductor 170 and arrives at the electromagnet XII, then, from there, it passes into a conductor marked XII and arrives, passing through a conductor 174, to the left key contact 104. The contacts 104 being closed, the current passes through the conductor 173, the <I> CU </I> conductor and arrives at the left contact of the switch 66b, then to the 66th contact which is connected by the COMM conductor then, from there, by the conductor 175, the upper contact of the switch 169 and return to the generator, so that the electromagnet XII is powered on.
The circuit established by the contacts 105 of this key is not closed at this time, because the switch 66 is still open. Likewise, if one of the keys bearing an odd number is pressed, the circuit passing through the corresponding electromagnet is closed, following the combination or code system allowing the perforations to be made on section b.
Now consider the keys 2, 4, 6, 8; we see that the right contact, 104, of each of these keys is connected to a conductor marked R-III, connected in turn to a relay indicated in the same way, and shown above the group of electromagnets in fig. 7.
The relay is connected to a conductor 176 extending to the point where the CU conductor is connected to the left switch contact 66b. Thus, when one of these keys bearing even numbers is pressed, the R-III relay is also energized. Consider, for example, the 2 key;
the current, coming from the generator, passes through the conductor 170, the electromagnet XI, then through a conductor marked XI and, from there, it arrives at the left contact 104. The contacts being closed, the current passes through the conductor B-III, driver 177 and arrives at the relay. R-III, then it returns via conductor 176 to the left switch contact 66b, then, from there, via contact 66c and the COMM conductor; it then returns via conductor 175 and the upper contact of switch 169 to the generator.
The energization of the relay controls the contact 178 which closes the circuit of the conductor 170, the electromagnet III, the relay contact 178, the conductor 176, the switch, to return to the generator, -as described. above. Thus, when the key 2 is pressed, the electromagnets XI and III - are put under tension for the selection of the torrespon- ding punches. Likewise, when the remaining keys with even numbers are pressed, the electromagnet III and another electromagnet corresponding to the pressed key are energized.
Thus, in the position of the switch 66 shown in FIG. 7, - circuits are closed ensuring the selection - of punches before making - perforations in section b of the card.
If the cam 70 is now turned to allow the switch 66 to come into the position shown in FIG. 5, the right contact 66b comes into -contact with the central contact blade 66e.
The lower key contacts 105 (fig. 7) are thus closed, the circuits are closed, the contacts 104 being now open, since the circuits described above are open at the switch. Consider the 0 key and the odd-numbered keys;
it can be seen that the right contact 105 of each key is connected to a common conductor 179, in turn connected to a conductor marked <I> CL, </I> which is connected to the right switch contact 66b. If you press the 0 key, the current coming from the generator passes through the conductor 170 and arrives at the electromagnet IV, then, from there, passes through a conductor marked IV, the left contact 105 the 0 key.
The contacts being closed., The current flows through the conductor 179, the <I> CL, </I> conductor then, from there, through the right switch contact 66b and the central contact 66c, the first conductor marked COMM, and returns to the generator, as described above. Thus, the electromagnet will be energized and, likewise, after pressing one of the keys with an odd number, the individual electromagnets are energized in accordance with the combination or code system indicated for the number. section c of the map.
Now consider the keys with even numbers; it can be seen that each right-hand contact 105 is connected to a conductor marked R -IX, connected to a relay marked R-IX, shown below the groups of electromagnets, in fig. 7, a conductor 180 leaving the relay and going to the connection point of the conductor <I> CL </I> with the right contact of the switch 66b.
Thus, when you press, for example, button 2, the current leaves the generator, passes through the conductor <B> 170, </B> the electromagnet V, then, from there, it passes through a conductor marked V and the left contact 105 of button 2.
With the contacts closed, the current flows through the R - IX conductor, the R-IX relay and the 180 conductor, the right contact of the switch 66b, then it passes through the central contact <B> 66e < / B> and the conductor marked COMM to return to the generator, as described above.
Energizing the relay R - IX closes a contact 181, thus closing a fired -wire comprising the conductor 170, the electromagnet IX, the conductor 182, the contacted relay 181, the conductor 180 and the contacts of the switch, with return to the generator, as described above. Thus, the electromagnets V and IX are simultaneously energized to select the corresponding punches.
Likewise, when the other keys bearing even numbers are pressed, the electromagnet IX is energized at the same time as another electromagnet corresponding to the key, depending on the sound combination or the code system for the key. the perforations in section c.
The single contacts shown in fig. 8b and controlled by the keys 35 are generally similar in construction to that of the contacts 39 shown in FIG. 8, except that we only have a single pair of the melles 112 carrying the contacts 106.
Fig. 7 also shows the circuit controlled by the spacer bar 17 by means of the electromagnet 74. The contacts of the spacer bar are indicated by TR and it is seen that when these contacts are closed. pressing the space bar, the current passes through the generator, the conductor 170, a branch 183 and the electromagnet 74, then the closed contacts TR and a conductor 184, to return through the conductor marked COMM, to the generator, as described above.
It may be necessary to have two pairs of contacts at the opposite ends of the spacer bar, in order to be certain that at least one pair of contacts will be closed when the spacer bar is pressed. If the pair of lower contacts, in fig. 7, is not fully closed, the current goes to the upper pair of contacts and from there to conductor 184,
so that the circuit will always be closed by at least a pair of contacts. The spacer electromagnet circuit can also be closed by operating switch 169 (fig. 7) to open the upper contact of this switch and close the lower contact. The current will thus pass from the generator to the spacer electromagnet, then via the conductor 185 and will return to the generator via the lower contact of the switch 169.
In the diagram, the carriage recall key and the rear recall key are indicated by CR and RS respectively. When the reverse contacts 13S are closed, the current coming from the generator goes through the conductors 170 and 183, a coil 186 of the electromagnet 133, a conductor 187 and a conductor marked RS, then it passes through RS contacts, conductor 172 and returns to. the generator via the upper contacts of switch 169.
When the CR carriage return contacts are closed, current from the generator passes through conductors 170 and 183, a coil 188 of the electromagnet 90, then a conductor 189 and the closed contacts CR, the conductors 190 and 172 to return to the generator via the upper contact of the switch 169.
In practice, the CR and RS keys control the energization of the coils <B> 186 </B> and 188 indirectly, by relays, following the ordinary process.
The diagram of the fi-. 7 also shows the single or multiple spacing contacts, SP and SK respectively, operated by the single and multiple spacing keys of FIG. 11, these contacts controlling the circuits of the electromagnets SP and SK to effect the single or multiple spacing movements of the carriage 45. Since these keys and electromagnets are of the well known type, they will not be used. .described in detail.
When using the machine to punch a card and assuming that the card is in place between the plates 78 and 123a, this card having been previously advanced by the ejector 18, the card latch being in position to hold the card, switch 66 being in the position shown in FIG. 2 to control the circuits, so as to. perform the perforations on the. section b of the card, we -first press the keys of the set 37 to command the placement of the punches to make the perforations on the .section a. of the card shown in fig 12.
Each key that is pressed energizes an electromagnet 40 which causes a push-button 60 and its corresponding second push-button 117 to descend from a row of punches, the two push-buttons being blocked in this position by a slide 63 or 64 to put in place. position the punch corresponding to the key that was pressed.
Each key that is pressed also advances the carriage 45 one notch, so that the key that is pressed next will actuate a punch of the next row and so on until all the punches have have been selected to make the desired perforations on section a. The keys of set 38 are then used to make the selection of the punches for making the perforations on section b.
Depending on whether one or the other of the keys is infancy, one or two punches out of the six making perforations on section b will be placed in a row, each time a key is pressed, and the carriage will be advanced one step each time a key is pressed, until all the punches have been placed to make the perforations in section b of the card. n then presses the space bar 17 to put the electromagnet 74 under tension; the coupling 77 then turns the shaft 29 by one revolution.
This movement, through the cam 118 and the lever 121, raises the frame 123 and the stack 78 and all the punches which have been put in place until 1-to are inserted into the card and effect perforations in sections <I> a </I> and <I> b. </I>
<B> 3 </B> However, since the shaft 25 only makes a U-turn at this time, the card stopper 34 will not be removed and the card will be held in the punch position.
The ejector 18 will be brought back, but it will not yet advance a card and the cam 70 will move away from the switch 66, as seen in the figure. 5, to allow the switch to close circuits # requiring the selection of perforating punches in section c. The carriage return key 91 is pressed to return the carriage to the left (fig.
1) as described above and the multi-space key can be pressed to advance the carriage to the start of section c. The keys of set 38 are now pressed to carry out the selection of the punches, but, consequently (the position of the switch 66; the circuits are modified - so that each dark key will command one or two punches out of the six , in each row, to perform the perforations on section C. The carriage is moved forward step by step, each time a key is pressed until the punches to be perforated in the row have been selected. section c.
The space bar 17 is actuated to turn the shaft 29 one turn and make the holes in the card on section c. As the shaft 29 turns one turn, the shaft 25 will make a half turn, so that the roller 127 7 will come into the hollow of the cam 126, the map tab 34 will be erased, thus allowing to the rollers 33 and 130 to bring the card into the magazine 131.
The ejector 18 will at the same time be advanced to bring a new card to the guide rollers 30 and 31 which will bring this card into the perforation position between the plates 7 8 and 123a, the card stopper is returned to its position and hand holds the card when the roller 127 comes out of the recess 125. The cam 70 is also returned to the position shown in FIG. to return the switch to the control position - circuits to perform the perforations on section b.
The carriage return key is pressed again to return the carriage to the left, in the position of fig. 1, and the described operation can be repeated for the new card. While the carriage is returned to its original position, the slides 63, 64 are actuated in the manner described and release the pushers 60 lowered during the previous installation.
The machine is fitted with an indicator device showing the operator: in which part of the card, b or c, the perforations will be made, depending on the position of the switch 66. As shown in fig. 4 and 5, the indicator 157 is pivotally mounted on an axis 158, below a window 159 provided in the keypad plate, as shown in FIG. 11; this pivoting indicator bears the indications "upper" and "lower" coming in front of the window and indicating respectively that the perforations will be made on section b or e.
The arm 161 of this indicator is coupled. In 162 to a rod 163 articulated to an arm 164 fixed. On the axis 71 of the cam 70. Thus, depending on the position of the cam and the switch, the segment 157 will be activated to present the words "upper" or "lower" in window 159.
When sections b and c are fully punched, there may be three or four holes in each complete vertical column, so that when these sections extend the entire length of the card, there may be a number of perforations over the card well over a hundred. If all of these holes were to be punched in one operation, the machine would be exposed to too much strain. Therefore, the machine is preferably constructed to punch holes in two individual operations.
I1 may however be necessary, after having set up the punches to perform the perforations on the section a of the card, to set up the punches to perform the perforations. both in the upper and lower sections, b and c, before the punching operation, so that the whole card can be punched in one operation.
In a machine built for this kind of operation, the shaft 2-5 and its related members are omitted and the ejector 18 and the card stopper 34 are actuated by the shaft 29 and the switch 66 is operated. operated by hand, for example by means of a joystick articulated to the arm, of the indicator 157.
When using this machine, the keys of group 37 are operated to set the punches for making the perforations in section a and the keys of group 38 are then pressed to set the punches for making the perforations in section a. section b. The carriage 45 is then brought back by hand by means of the ordinary handle 168 and, after having changed the position of the switch 66, the keys of group 38 are depressed, to put in place the punches to make the perforations in the section c.
The spacing key is then depressed to energize the spacer solenoid 74 to allow the coupling 77 to drive the main shaft 29, so that the punches perforate the card in its places. three sections.
When the carriage is returned to the hand, as above, the roller 83a is not pushed back and the slides 63, 64 are not activated and do not release the pushers. 60. So that the punches of a row, of the machine described above, can be put in place to perform the perforations on section b, without disturbing the punches of the same row selected to perform the perforations on 1a section c, an adopts the positive .dis of locking slides 63, 64, shown in FIG. 9.
There is a locking slide 63 and a worm slide 64 for each row of pushers 60, the slides being disposed at the posed .op sides of the row of pushers. The six push-buttons corresponding to the punches for effecting the perforations on section b have their locking lugs 61 protruding from one side of the pushers to cooperate with the slide 64, while the six pushers both have their locking lugs protruding. .on the opposite sides of the pushers to cooperate with the slide 68.
Each slide is provided with six holes 62, provided with locking notches cooperating with the worm lugs 61 of the six pushers controlled by the slide. When one or more pushers among the six pushers controlled by the slide 64 are pressed, the slide moves longitudinally, against the action of the spring 632 to allow the lugs .de rusting worm 61 - to cross the notches, then it r events back to block the evening push (s) in the lower position. Likewise, each of the six push-buttons controlled by the slide 63 will actuate this slide to lock the depressed push-button (s).
If the two groups of six pushers were controlled by a single slider, when a pusher is driven in to make a perforation on section c, the slider would release the push-button (s) previously locked in the punch control position for perform the perforations in section b, but using the device comprising the locking plates described, the punches can be put in place to perform the perforations without section c, without hindering the selection of the punches already made, to make the perforations in section b.
The machine shown in the drawings could also be used - by first putting the punches in place to make the perforations on the <I> a </I> and <I> b </I> sections of the card, and then making the perforations, then returning the cards to the magazine and redoing the insertion and the perforation operation, so as to make the perforations, on section c of the card.
The switch 169 mentioned above can be used in conjunction with other known devices, not shown on the drawings, if it is desired to successively punch a number of cards, which must have identical perforations, with a single bet. in place of the punches and without stopping the machine.
When the switch is operated, starting from the position shown in 1a fig. 7, to close the lower contact, the spacer solenoid 74 is energized to rotate the shaft 29 and the shaft continues to rotate until the iMerrup- tour is returned to the position. which it occupies in FIG. 7.
It is understood that with the machine described, the keys of the set 37 can be used to select the individual punches corresponding to the keys over the entire extent of a normal card with forty-five columns, ordinary, or else for select the punches to make perforations in any section of the card, a for example, shown in fig. 12, and then the keys of the set 38 are used to select the points. We are going to make the perforations in section h or both in sections b. and c of the card.
You can also use the set of keys 38 to select the punches and perform the perforations in sections b and c of the map in fig. 12, or these sections can be enlarged by reducing or even eliminating section a altogether.
The perforation system of the card represented on the fib. 12 increases the recording capacity of the card by means of perforations, because in the part of the card comprising sections b and c, each column is transformed into two columns which can receive perforations and when sections h and e are enlarged and -include the entire -map, the map is transformed from a map with forty-five columns to a map with ninety columns,
thus doubling the capacity of use of the card.
The machine is not primarily designed for punching cards according to the type of section a, but it can be easily used for this purpose by hitting the space key twice after each positioning of the punches.
