<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
No.2), on (16) (dessin No.l).
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

Typewriter with character wheel operated by means of a normal keyboard
The present invention relates to a typewriter with a character wheel operated by means of keys. The new element, created by this invention, is that the. rotary displacement and the return to the normal position of the character wheel, as well as the typing movement of the latter, occur automatically by means of a spring tension which, in turn, results from the tension from the spring of the cart.
The tension of the spring can, on the other hand, be caused by the pressure exerted on the keys. This innovation provides the possibility of constructing a typewriter with character wheel which, while requiring only a brief and light pressure of the keys, allows to reach a high typing velocity, Apart from these main characteristics, the- - maohine presents a whole series of innovations, recorded in the drawing, in particular the fact that the character wheel performs

the typing during the return of the keys to their normal position, and the device by virtue of which the character wheel is caused to produce the struck, then it resumes its normal position, under the action of a spring whose detent,
while continuing in one direction, successively provokes these two movements. Another innovation concerning this machine is its control by means of sliding keys and the particular device for stopping the character wheel by means of a movable comb effecting a back and forth movement. below the buttons and whose new characteristic lies in the fact that the number of cams is lower than that of the button strips that it must meet.
The attached drawing shows, by way of example, the operation of the invented typewriter. A touch gives way under the pressure of a finger. The button strip (1), resting in the notches of the guides (60), advances downward on an inclined plane at a determined angle, which causes the stopper (14) of the button strip to descend into the passage provided for the reciprocating comb (12). The key thus moved causes the part (16) to be tilted so that it can perform a rotational movement.
The part (16) is provided with an articulated connector (17) which advances to the Bernent where the part (16) tilts and which rotates the part (19). The latter according to a known method, by means of two teeth alternately meshed with the rack of the carriage, advances the latter 1. due to one tooth. The rope (24) cemmandée by a spring ensures, according to a known device, the traction of the carriage. The carriage spring housing (25) is provided with teeth.
Each time the spring is released, the teeth of the casemaker lower the part (27), the point of which rotates the arm (30) around its axis (57), which causes the machine member (38) to rise and results in the tension of the spring (49). The axle (48) of the character wheel is fixed at point (62) on an oscillating shaft. This shaft (47), capable of rotation, is mounted in the guides (61). The small toothed wheel (9), fixed on the axis of the wheel & characters, and meshing on the segment (8), is; located at a point of the axis (48) which corresponds in a straight line with the painted bearing (61).
This arrangement allows the small ... toothed wheel (9) to remain in contact with the segment (8), and to maintain its gear in a constant and perfect manner with the teeth of the latter,

despite the rocking movement of the axis of the character wheel (48), the shaft (47) is provided with two points of which one (46) goes up and the other (45) down , (Drawing No.2) ..
The part (38) is provided, at the top, with a stopper (40) and, at the bottom, with a stopper 41, the model of which comprises a movable pawl, When the machine is in the idle state, the pawl ( 41) is in contact with the tip (45). (Drawing No, 2), After the keyboard key has yielded to the pressure of the finger, the key strip (1) is returned to its normal position by means of the rocker (16). This rocker (16) is shared in its middle and thus consists of two branches, one on the right, the other on the left. The left branch, fitted with a spring, independently obeys the command of the keyboard, which pushes it forward.
On the other hand, the right branch of the rocker (46) always entratne the left branch. The machine member (33) carries a part (5), oscillating, one or the other of the two ends of which is raised depending on whether one or the other of the two arms of the lever (16) will have been struck by means of the key.
In this way, the part (5), operating as a rocker, is placed in contact sometimes with one (6), sometimes with the other (7) of the points of the segment (8). The return of the button strip (1) to its original position simultaneously drives that of the part (16) and allows the connector (17) to cause, by means of the stopper (18), the rotation of the pawl (36), which releases the part (33).
The spring (35) relaxes at this time. 'and brings the part (33) back to its original position, which causes one of the two points (6) and (7) to meet the rocker (5) ¯ depending on whether a right key is struck, or left, of the keyboard ,, and depending on whether one or the other of the ends of the rocker (5) meets these points - 'and - 1 makes the segment (8) describe a rotation from left to right, if c 'is the lower point, or from right to left, if it is the upper point that is affected.
However, the rotational movement does not change until the moment when one of the teeth of the comb (12), entered by the segment (8), by means of the punch.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
te (11), meets the key strip which has just been set in motion, Each of the teeth of the comb (12) corresponds to a whole group of keys. The four teeth arranged on each side of the comb, to the right and to the left, occupy. the rest state of the positions whose distance varies from the button closest to them.
This determines differences in the corresponding movements of the comb, depending on the key which intervenes, When the character wheel is in position for a determined letter, the rocker (16), continuing its return movement, causes the part to return. (54) mounted on a pivot, which releases the part (38) relative to the pawl (52), and brought it down by means of the spring (49), By performing this movement, the stopper (41) of the part (38) strikes the tip (45) and, therefore, the character wheel (10) reaches the paper cylinder, At the last moment before the meeting of the character wheel with the paper cylinder, the pawl (41 ), striking the tip (44), stops intervening.
After the character wheel has reached the paper cylinder and the impression has been produced, the stopper (40) of the part (38) is brought into contact, above the center of rotation of the axis of the character wheel, with the tip (46), pushes the latter and causes rotation of the shaft (47) in the return direction, while returning the axis of the character wheel to its rest position. This sequence of movements is repeated under the command of each of the other keys.
Drawing N, 3 shows another type of construction of the typewriter of this invention. When a key (62) intervenes, the key strip (1) advances in accordance with what has been described further. top ,, and the guides of the bars (51) are lined with small rollers to make the keyboard more flexible. The toggles (2), on the right and on the left, have, at the rear, a bridge @ (37) which is applied behind the tab (38) of the intervened key bar, For the key bars remaining at the put the bridge (37) in front
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the tabs (38), which blocks the touches that have not intervened as long as the bar placed in emotion has not returned to its original position.
The forward movement of the levers (2) causes a similar movement, forward, of. fitting (3), which causes the part (4) to rotate, the upper tooth of which engages with one of the detents of the click wheel (33). The part (4) simultaneously releases the pawl (5) from its position controlled by the stop tooth, which causes the part (6) to which the aliquet is attached to descend. The board (19), controlled by the return spring (45), is therefore released in turn. The board (19) has at point (70) a part (23) mounted on a pivot. The part (23), the middle of which is hollow, has notches on its right and left sides.
In the resting state, one of the points (26), fixed to the segment (25), is housed in one of these notches. The fall of the board (19) causes that of the piece (23), which meets the point (27) and thus causes the segment (25) to rotate. The meeting with the rocker (2) on the left causes a deviation of the part (23) to the left., In fact, the part (42) gives the part (43) a rotational movement, and moves to. way of. connection (44) the part (23) to the left. This deflection results in meeting the tip (26), which rotates the segment (25) to the right. A small toothed wheel (34), fixed on the axis of the click wheel (33), is meshed on the rack of the carriage.
The propulsion of the rocker (2) and of the part (3) drives in the same direction the pawl 8 which slightly exceeds the pawl (9). The pawl (7) is driven simultaneously into the notch (3a) of the part (3). The pawl (9) serves as a support for the part (10) which, for its part, retains the part (12).
The pawl (16) is mounted on the part (12) and, by means of its stopper, engages with the lower part of the axis of
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the character wheel (20). During the return of the button strip (1) and the part (3), the pawl (8) meets the pawl (9). This describes a rotational movement and releases the arm (10) which, controlled by the spring (36), pivots and simultaneously releases the arm (12). The two parts (12) and (6) have the ur pivot at point (13). The part (12), released, undergoes the effect of the spring (35) which forces it to descend, and by means of the pawl (16) with which it is provided it reaches the axis of the character wheel (20) at -below the center of rotation thereof.
The carac wheel. (41) reaches the paper cylinder (31). The stopper (15), also mounted on the part (12) and which hits either the axis of the character wheel, above the center of rotation, or the point (22), above the shaft (21 ), returns the axis of the character wheel to the normal position. The propulsion and return of the character wheel in this type of construction are provided by a single spring (35), following the same principle which was made evident in the construction described first.
The part (3) stopped by the pawl (7), after the removal of the pawl (9), remains in this position until the arm (12), during its fall, causes the pawl (7) to pivot to the last moment, by means of its stopper (14), after the character wheel has made the impression.
This allows the rod (3) to disengage, and the part (4), yielding to the traction exerted by the spring of the rocker (2), also disengages from the tooth of the click wheel (33), which also results in the release of the small wheel (34).
This pivots under the action of the rack of the carriage to the point where the pawl (5), which had fallen on a tooth, returns to its normal position and also returns the arm (6) to its original position. (The primitive position is circumscribed upwards by means of a clearance point). The arm (12), for its part, obeying the arm (6) which is provided with a driving tip, is also brought back to its normal position.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The part (10) is also returned to its normal position by the arm (6) which, during its return, furthermore operates the re-establishment of the board (19) in its original position.
On the other hand, the surfaces of ohoo (65) of the planchette (19) meet the points (26) of the segment (25) which thereby resumes its normal position, and the character wheel thus returns, too, in its primitive position. The arm (12) is connected to the part (53) which meshes with the small wheel (54).
11 results from this that the axis (59) profiled as a worm, sets the inked ribbon in motion. The segment (25), in drawing No. 3, ends in a fork whose branches (61) are rounded in order to ensure the necessary compensations during the rotations of the segment which, from one letter to another, must always rotate at the same angle.
The types of construction described above, relating to the electric machine of this invention, are equipped with slide keys, according to the drawings. These slide keys are maintained in their normal position by means of spring arms (63) arranged on a collective bearing (66) which return these keys to their original position as soon as they have been struck. The slide keys, however, have no other purpose than to simplify the construction of the nachine.
The control of the typewriter of this small invention is also effected by means of pivot keys, of the normal type, and of which the key strips mounted on a pivot, provide in a mode @ au. by means of push-buttons, and under the pressure of the keys, the forward movement of the tilting parts (2) (drawing No.2), on (16) (drawing No.l).
In this case, the pivot keys are provided at the bottom, as in the constructions described above, with stops which touch the teeth of the adjusting comb (12) (drawing 1) or (27) (drawing 3).
In addition to the types of construction described above, and still with a view to the applications of the principle of the invention,
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
including automatic character wheel control, where applicable. to consider still other types of construction for the typewriter than that which are conventional, types which differ from the previous ones in that the control may be only partially automatic. Drawing No. 4 illustrates a construction of that other guy. According to this design, the character wheel obeys a manual control, by pressing or pushing a key, according to a known mode, for a given letter.
On the other hand, the spring of. o cart then brought back to o. to its original position, as soon as the impression is produced. Under the pressure of a key (69) (drawing No. 4) the machine member (17), mounted on a pivot (29) describes a rotary movement, while the bars of keys strike with their arms. (32) the angled rim, or stepped profile, of the part (17) and causing the rotation of the latter. The contoured shape of the part (17) serves to compensate for the movement of the key with respect to the various rotations of the character wheel.
The rotation of the part (17) thus causes, via the connection (20), the rotations of the segment (25), sometimes to the right, sometimes to the left, under manual control, depending on whether the keys on the right side of the olavier act meet the part (17), or. that the left keys meet the part (18). Before the keys reach part (17) with their pushers (32), or (18), part (2) causes part (3) to slip, as in the constructions described above (drawing No. .3), and rotates the part (4), the pusher of which, in accordance with the desaription already provided, engages with one of the teeth of the click wheel (33) and disengages from this wheel (33). ) the oliquet which stops at the next tooth of the wheel (33),
and placed lower, releasing the arm (6).
@ This, as shown in drawing No. 3 also releases the planohette (19) as the fraction of the spring (45)
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
brought down. It is only then that the path necessary for the rotation of the segment and, hence, of the character wheel, is cleared. The segment (25), according to drawing No. 4, will pivot, obeying the manual control, up to the point where the adjusting comb (27) meets the actuated button strip. During key return, the character wheel makes the imprint and returns to its normal position. manner which is described by drawing No.3. The same goes for the mobine when it resumes its positive position.
Drawing No. 3 shows the mechanism. The segment (25), when the board (19) returns to its normal position, renoontre the angles (23) thereof with the points (35th which brings the segment back to its original position.
The last type of construction provides, it is true, the automaticity of the striking of the character wheel and of its return (by rotation) to its first position, automaticity obtained by the fact that the spring of the carriage goes up (tightens) the spring. of the imprint control operated by the wheel at a., and brought this back to its original position, but the adjustment of the character wheel with respect to the desired letter is made at. by means of a manual control, which relieves the spring (45) of the need to be very strong, while considerably sparing the spring of the carriage.
This spring from. carriage can be spared even more, if the type of construction of the typewriter in question provides only the winding of the spring of the control of the imprints of the character wheel by means of the tension of the carriage. On the other hand, the adjustment of the character wheel and the return of the latter to the normal position result from a manual effort, the machine parts (17) and (18) (drawing 4) being provided with springs which are tensioned. under the pressure exerted by the hand on the key, while the segment (25) simultaneously performs its corresponding rotation. When: - the key is released, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
springs of parts (17) and (18) operate the return of the light (25) to the normal position.
In this case the board (19) (drawing 4) becomes superfluous * On the other hand, the mechanism provided to ensure the keystrokes by means of the character wheel and the return thereof to the idle state is similar to that which represents drawing No. 3, namely: the control spring for strikes the character wheel is wound up by means of the. carriage and emerges, according to the description given, at the same time as the key on the keyboard.
As regards the automatic keystrokes effected by the character wheel, the additional possibility exists for all types of construction to produce by hand the spring tension necessary to ensure these keystrokes and to return to its position. initial character wheel. Indeed, the pressure applied to a key (drawing 3) causes the key strip (1) to lift the arm (12) via the lever (2) and the part (3) attached to it. (by means of a special point), and to tension the spring (35). the rest of the mechanical movements then evolves in accordance with the description given (drawing 3):
the pawl (5) is released from the click wheel (33) under the thrust of the part (4) and is housed on the next tooth, located lower; the character wheel, as described above, performs a rotation obeying the part (33) and the spring (45). As soon as the keyboard key disengages, the spring (35) relaxes, and the arm (12), as described above, causes the character wheel to provide the imprint and return to its normal position.
After the r.to o. has made the impression, the arm (12), via its stopper (14) releases the pawl (7) from the part (3) which had remained attached to it, which allows the part (4) to definitively release the ratchet wheel (33) that the carriage engages with the next tooth. The oliquet (5) in turn rises, and the character wheel, in accordance with the description provided, pivots and returns to its initial position.
Oepemdant, the arm (12) remains down, in this case, until
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
moment when a new key press raises it through the part (3). In this last combination, the pawls (9) and (8) are superfluous. In order to ensure the arm (12) greater mobility relative to the place where it meets the axis of the character wheel, its pivot can be mounted to the right of the part (3), or. move the indicated landing point (23) even further to the left. In the case of the construction in question here, it is also possible to completely eliminate the spring (35) of the arm (12), by combining the arm (12) with the part (3) in such a way that a tip of the workpiece (3) enters a transverse slot of the arm (12).
In this oas, the character wheel makes the imprint and returns to its normal position, obeying the spring control (70) of the rocker (2), the control of which the spring is raised and relaxed simultaneously with the corresponding pressure movements. and releasing the keys from the keyboard, so that the spring which puts the keys back in place simultaneously causes the typing and returning movements of the character wheel.
The same result is obtained by completely removing the spring (70) from the rocker (2) and retaining the spring (35) from the arm (12). In this box the arm (12) will repoass itself the part (3) and the rocker (2), which puts the button bars back in their normal position.
The drawings explained here, of course, show only types of construction relating to a typewriter of the present invention. The ideas which form the basis of the typewriter of this invention may, of course, give rise to different types of construction which are not mentioned here.
