Electric typewriter
The invention relates to a character bar typewriter comprising at least one drive wheel in continuous rotation; a common typing control member, controlled by the drive mobile and capable of actuating any one of the character bars, each character bar having a selector device that co-operates with said common typing control member , as well as an actuator of the motion.
The object of the invention is to allow greater speed in the movements of motion and typing.
The object of the invention is an electric typewriter of the aforementioned type, characterized in that the member for actuating the motion is controlled by the drive mobile in a determined phase relationship with the common member for controlling the motion. hit.
The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side view of the motion and strike control mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of part of the motion actuation mechanism of a typewriter.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating part of the motion actuation mechanism.
Fig. 4 is a side view of the motion control cam.
The mechanism shown comprises a control shaft 1 driven in permanent rotation by a motor, not shown. This shaft 1 is arranged parallel to the impact cylinder of the machine, also not shown.
On the control shaft 1 is mounted a motion control cam 2 having three parts: a cylindrical part or track 3 corresponding to the striking position in lower case; a cylindrical part or track 4 corresponding to the typing position in upper case; as well as a track 5 located between tracks 3 and 4. This track 5 has a profile formed by two cylindrical portions connected by two spiral portions allowing a gradual passage from track 3 to track 4, that is to say - say from position d (lowercase to uppercase position.
The mechanism for actuating the motion further comprises a caster 7 mounted loose on a shaft 8 mounted on a support 9 and which, in the position shown in FIG. 2, bears against the track 3 of the control cam 2. The support 9 itself comprises two parallel arms 10 and 11 held apart by a spacer 12 and integral with a pivot rod 13 mounted on the frame 33, partially shown, of the machine.
Two parallel arms 27, arranged approximately perpendicular to the support 9, are fixed on the pivot rod 13. The arms 27 are connected by a rod 28 carrying the assembly of the striking device 38.
The shaft 8 is slidably mounted in bearings 14 and 15 carried by the arms 10 and 11 respectively.
This shaft 8 and the wheel 7 which it carries are retained in the position illustrated in FIG. 2 by the action of a spring 18 bearing, on the one hand, against the end of the bearing 14 and, on the other hand, against a head 17 fixed at the end of the shaft. This head 17 cooperates with a lever 20 oscillating on a pivot 21 of a support 22 fixed to the frame of the machine. This lever 20 is articulated at 23 at the end of a plunger core 24 of an electromagnet 25, also fixed to the frame of the machine.
The ends of the arms 10 and 11 of the support 9 pivoting with the rod 13 are subjected to the action of two return springs 26 tending to apply the roller 7 carried by said support against one of the cylindrical tracks 3 or 4 control cam 2.
The control shaft 1 also carries an eccentric 6 communicating a continuous back and forth movement to a block 29 for controlling the impact sliding on two parallel guide rods 34, only one of which is visible in the drawing, and which are each arranged in the vicinity of each end of the frame of the machine.
The typing control device is of the type in which each character to be typed is selected by an electromagnet 35 associated with a selector 37 and the corresponding character bar 36. When a key corresponding to the character bar 36 is depressed, the electromagnet 35 is energized, which has the effect of actuating against the action of a spring R the selector 37 whose end 37 'comes to be placed on the path of the striking block 29 The latter then drives the selector 37, which has the effect of causing the character bar 36 to pivot around its pivot rod 36 'and to propel this character bar towards the striking cylinder, not shown, of the machine.
The motion mechanism works as follows:
In the lowercase position, shown in fig. 2, the roller is applied against the cylindrical track 3 of the control cam 2 driven in continuous rotation by the control shaft 1.
When acting on the key, not shown, for controlling the capital letters, the electromagnet 25 is energized, the core 24 of which, moving in the direction of arrow 30, causes the pivoting, around 21, of the lever 20 in the direction of the arrow 16. The end of the lever 20 resting on the head 17 then moves the shaft 8 with its roller 7 against the action of the spring 18.
The shaft 8 and the head 17 then respectively take the positions 8 'and 17' indicated in dotted lines in FIG. 2.
During this movement, the roller 7 gradually passes through the spiral portion of the track 5 on the upper case cylindrical track 4 of the control cam 2, so as to finally occupy the position 7 'indicated in dotted lines at fig. 2.
As a result of this displacement, the support 9 pivots with the rod 13 in the direction of arrow 31 while at the same time driving the arms 27 in the direction of arrow 32. The displacement of the arms 27 is such that the axis of the rod 28 located at the end of these arms moves downwards by a determined height h, the value of which corresponds to the usual motion of 6.6 mu. The result is that the entire striking device carried by the rod 28 undergoes a displacement h of the same value.
It should be noted that in order to pass from the cylindrical track 3 to the cylindrical track 4, the wheel 7 borrows the transition track 5. As a result, the motion movement controlled by this wheel occurs while the shaft 1 passes through. 'a first angular position to a second well determined angular position.
A determined phase relationship is provided between the control of the motion and the control of the character bar by the keystroke control block 29.
The transition track 5 is wedged on the shaft 1 relative to the cam 6 so that the wheel 7 is raised by this transition track 5 to reach the level of the track 4 a little before the end of the commanded striking movement by this cam 6 and by the striking control unit 29. In this way, a synchronization between the typing and the motion is obtained, and it is certain that the motion is completed a little before the character bar comes into contact with the writing surface.
It should be noted that the wheel 7 can only pass from track 3 to transition track 5 on the portion where the surfaces of these two tracks are at the same level. If the electromagnet 30 is actuated when the shaft 1 is in an inappropriate angular position, the roller 7 comes to bear by its side against the lateral edge of the transition track 5. It is held in this position by the action of the electromagnet until the portion of track 5 which is at the same level as track 3 comes up to the height of the wheel 7. At this moment, the lateral displacement of the wheel 7 and the The shaft 8 is no longer hindered, so that the wheel 7 engages on the track 5, by a lateral movement, until it comes to rest against the side of the cylindrical track 4.
When the roller 7 has been lifted by the transition track 5 to the level of the cylindrical track 4, the end of the lateral displacement takes place and the roller 7 takes its rolling position 7 'on the cylindrical track 4.
When the motion returns to the tiny position, the excitation of the electromagnet 30 is cut off and the spring 18 tends to return the shaft 8 to the position illustrated in FIG. 2. It should be noted that during this recall movement, roulette 7 can jump from track 4 to track 3 on only a portion of the circumference of the first.
To prevent the return to the lowercase position can take place during the typing of the character bar, provision has been made for the transition track 5 to have a diameter slightly greater than that of the cam 4 on a portion 5 'of its periphery. This portion 5 'therefore prevents the wheel 7 from jumping from track 4 to track 3 if the control current of the electromagnet 25 is interrupted in an inappropriate angular position of the axis 1.
