Escape mechanism for a typewriter carriage, allowing multiple spacing magnitudes to be obtained at will called the escape mechanism. As we know, the characters used in a typewriter are of different widths, so it is advantageous, in order to obtain a harmonious writing, to have an escape mechanism allowing to obtain a spacing. variable of the printed characters.
The object of the present invention is an escape mechanism for a carriage of a typewriter, making it possible to obtain several spacing sizes at will. This mechanism comprises a shaft, an escape wheel integral with this shaft, an escape anchor carrying the escape and retaining pawls of said wheel, an escape bridge actuated by type bars of the machine and intended to control said anchor, a pinion intended to come into engagement with the rack of the carriage.
It differs from known mechanisms by the fact that said pinion is capable of turning freely on said shaft and is integral in rotation with a second escape wheel, the escape and retaining pawls of which are carried by said first wheel. , so as to allow the coupling thereof to the pinion, means being provided to control the escape pawls of the first and of the second escapement wheel, these means being put into action by means of selection controlled by each of the keys of the keyboard, so as to obtain an escape giving a spacing which is a function of each character controlled by said keys.
The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of the mechanism which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the mechanism in the rest position, some parts being cut away. Fig. 2 shows, on a larger scale, part of FIG. 1.
Figs. 3 and 4 are two front elevations showing two parts of the mechanism of FIG. 1. FIG. 5 is a section along V-V of FIG. 2. FIG. 6 shows, on a larger scale, two operating positions of certain members of the mechanism.
Figs. 7 to 10 show some variations of the button lever.
The escape mechanism which is described below is controlled by a striking mechanism. The latter comprises for each character bar 1, provided with an upper character la and a lower character <B> lb, </B> a key lever 2 and intermediate levers 3 and 4. The bar 1, the button lever 2 and the intermediate levers 3 and 4 are interconnected by zippers 5, 6 and 7 and articulated respectively at 8, 9, 10 and 11. A spring 12, acting on the lever 4, tends to hold the Button lever 2 pressed against a stop 13. Button lever 2 owes its name to the fact that it has a button 14.
Near its pivot point 9, the button lever 2 has two jaws 15 and 16 (fig. 9, 10) of different shape, intended to cooperate with two transverse bars, respectively 17 and 18, forming part of the mechanism. exhaust. The bars 17 and 18 are carried by levers 19 and 20 respectively, articulated at 21 on a vertically movable support 100. These bars each carry an arm 22, 23 respectively, connecting them by means of a rod 24, respectively 25, to an arm of a lever with two arms 26, respectively 27, articulated at 28.
The second arm of the lever 26 is connected, through the intermediary of a pull tab 29, to a lever 30 pivoted at 31 on a plate 32 fixed to a support 33 (see FIG. 4). The pivoting of the lever 30 is limited between two studs 34 and 35 integral with the plate 32. A spring 36 tends to keep the lever 30 pressed against the stud 34. The lever 30 comprises a lug 37 engaged in a notch 38 of a lever. 39 mounted on a pin 40 integral with the support 33. A spring 41 tends to maintain it in the position shown in FIG. 1.
The latch 39 is capable of being moved axially on the axis 40, so as to occupy two extreme positions, on the right and on the left, shown respectively in solid lines and in dotted lines in FIG. 4. However, the spring 36 tends, through the lever 30, the lug 37 and the notch 38, to maintain the lever in the position shown in solid lines. This lever 39 has two arms 39a and 39b (FIG. 4), the latter of which takes, at its end, a stop 42, intended to cooperate with an exhaust bridge 43 (FIG. 1).
The latter 43, guided by the support 100 and a finger 44 integral with the latter, is held in the rest position, shown in FIG. 1, by a resort 45.
The second arm of the lever 27 is connected, by means of a pull tab 46, to an arm of a lever 47 with two arms (FIG. 3), articulated on a screw 48 and carrying, at the end of its other arm, a stop 49 intended to retain an escape pawl 50 cooperating with an escape wheel 58. Near the end of its arm connected to the pull tab 46, the lever 47 has an elongated opening 59 in which is engaged a stop 60 intended to limit its pivoting. A spring 112 tends to maintain the lever 47 in the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 3.
The pawl 50 is mounted, in the usual manner, on an escape anchor 51 pivoted at 52 and is movable therein perpendicularly and parallel to the plane of the drawing (FIG. 1). A spring 53 maintains it in the position shown in FIG. 1, forcing it to follow the movements of the anchor 51, a second spring, not shown, tending to press it against the stop 49 when it is released from the wheel 58.
A spring 54 opposes the pivoting of the anchor 51 in the opposite direction to that of clockwise (FIG. 1), pivoting limited by pressing the part Slc of the anchor against a stop 55. The anchor 51 comprises two arms 51a and <I> 51b, </I> of which the first carries a stop 56 intended to cooperate with the arm 39b of the lever 39, the second carrying a tooth 57 intended to serve as a retaining pawl for the escape wheel 58. The escape wheel 58 is fixed to a hollow shaft 61 capable of rotating in a bearing 62 arranged in a support 63 and provided with a ball bearing 62a.
A pinion 64 intended to cooperate with the rack of the carriage, not shown, is mounted idle on the shaft 61 at the front of the wheel 58 (on the right, in FIGS. 1 and 2) between a shoulder 61 a of the 'shaft 61 and an elastic ring 99. A second escape wheel 65 is made integral in rotation with the pinion 64. The number of teeth of the wheel 58 and the number of teeth of the wheel 65 are in the ratio 3: 2 ; in this case, the wheels 58 and 65 comprise 21 and 14 teeth respectively. Consequently, the movements of the carriage determined by said wheels, respectively 58 and 65, are inversely proportional to their numbers of teeth.
They are therefore in the ratio 2: 3 and correspond respectively to 2 and 3 spacing units, if the latter is defined as being half of the displacement that the carriage makes when the wheel 58 turns by one tooth. As for the pinion 64, it can have any number of teeth; in this case, it is the same as that of the wheel 65. Exhaust 66 and retaining pawls 67 of the wheel 65 (see fig. 3) are pivotally fixed, at 68 and 69 respectively, on the wheel 58.
The pawl 66 carries a tooth 66a and is subjected to the action of a spring 70 which tends to keep the tooth 66a engaged in the teeth of the wheel 65. The pawl 67 also has a tooth 67a and is subjected to the action. a spring 71 which tends to keep the tooth 67a away from the teeth of the wheel 65. The pawl 66 is extended rearward beyond its pivot point 68 by a part 66b intended to cooperate with the front part 67b pawl 67.
In the front part of the hollow shaft 61 (on the right in FIGS. 1 and 2) is housed a piston 72, one end of which projects from the shaft 61 and has a shoulder 72a. A spring 73, bearing between the latter 72a and the shaft 61, tends to maintain the piston 72 in the position shown in the drawing. Near its other end, the piston 72 has a notch 72b forming a ramp. A ball 74 is housed in this notch 72b and is held there by a pous evening 75 sliding in a radial opening 76 formed in the shaft 61 and in the hub of the wheel 58. The pusher 75 is subjected to the action of the spring. 71 via the pawl 67 (fig. 3).
In the rear part of the shaft 61 (on the left in FIGS. 1 and 2) is housed a second piston 77, one end of which projects from the shaft 61 and has a shoulder 77a. A spring 78 bears between the latter 77a and the shaft 61 to maintain the piston 77 in the position shown in the drawing. Between the end of the piston 77, located inside the shaft 61, and a pusher 79 capable of sliding in a radial opening provided in the shaft 61 and in the hub of the wheel 58, is placed a ball 80.
The pusher 79 is constantly subjected to the action of the spring 70 (FIG. 3) via the pawl 66 and a part 81 integral with the latter and located on the opposite face of the wheel 58. The face of the pous evening 79 which is in contact with the ball 80 forms an angle with the geometric axis of the shaft 61.
A ratchet wheel 8-2 (Figs. 1 and 5) is fixed by means of two nuts 83 and 84 on the shaft 61, near its rear end. The number of teeth of this wheel 82 is a sub-multiple of the number of teeth of wheels 58 and 65; in this case it is equal to 7.
The wheel 82 cooperates with a pawl 85 fixed to one of the ends of a pin 86 capable of turning in a support 87. A spring 101 tends to hand hold the pawl 85 in engagement with the wheel 82. At the other end of the axis 86 is fixed an arm 88 connected, by means of a rod 89, to an arm of an angled lever 90 pivoted at 91. This same arm of the lever 90 is connected, by means of 'a rod 92, to a pawl 93 (Fig. 3) articulated at 94 at the end of a lever 95 articulated around the bearing 62. A spring 96 tends to maintain the lever 95 in the position shown in the drawing.
The other arm of the lever 90 (FIG. 1) is connected, via a pull tab 97 to the lever 26. The latter comprises an elongated opening 98 in which the pull tab 97 is articulated. A second pull tab 102, articulated in an elongated opening 103 of the lever 90, connects the latter to an arm of an angled lever 104. The other arm of the lever 104 is connected, by means of a pull tab 105, to a bar 106 integral with the lever 39 A spring 113 tends to maintain the lever 104 in the position shown in the drawing.
The lever 90 is also connected, by the intermediary of a rod 107, to the lever of the reverse button, not shown in the drawing.
A curved lever 108 (FIG. 1), located rearward facing the piston 77, is articulated at 109. This lever 108 comprises a beak 110 intended to cooperate with the spring 53. A spring 111 tends to hold the lever 108 in the position shown in the drawing.
The escapement mechanism described enables three different amounts of spacing to be obtained, corresponding respectively to two, three and four spacing units. The smallest spacing is obtained when the wheel 58 is released to rotate by an angle equal to that between two adjacent teeth, while the greater spacing is given for twice the rotation of the wheel 58. L 'mean spacing, which is equal to three units, is obtained by rotating wheel 65 by an angle equal to that corresponding to the passage from one tooth to the next. In the latter case, the wheel 58 remains stationary.
The amount of spacing obtained is determined by the positions occupied respectively by the lever 47 (fig. 3) and the rocker 39 (fig. 4). When these two parts are placed in the positions shown in solid lines in Figs. 3 and 4, the smallest spacing quantity is obtained which is equal to two units. The escapement mechanism is controlled by the bridge 43 (fig. 1) which is moved by the action of a boss 1c of the character bar 1 on its end <I> 43a. </I>
The character bar 1 is controlled, in a known manner, by a key 14, the lowering of which turns the key lever 2 around 9. This movement is transmitted to the character bar 1 by means of the pull tabs 7, 6 and 5 and levers 4 and 3, the latter rotating dextrorsum, while the character bar rotates senestror- sum. When the character bar approaches its striking position, its boss 1c abuts against the end 43a of the bridge 43 and moves the latter against the action of the spring 45.
The end 43b of the bridge 43 then exerts a thrust on the stop 42, which is fixed to the arm 39b of the rocker 39 (FIG. 3), which causes the latter to rotate around its axis 40. The arm 39b acts on the stop 56 of the anchor 51 and rotates the latter around 52, against the action of the spring 54, until the part 51c is stopped by the stop 55. The movement of the anchor 51 causes , in known manner, the engagement of the retaining pawl 57 between the teeth of the wheel 58 and the disengagement of the exhaust pawl 50.
This latter is moved, by a spring not shown, until it meets the stop 49 of the lever 47, so that it is placed on the other side of the tooth of the wheel 58 that 'he was holding back.
After striking, the bar 1 returns to its rest position by releasing the bridge 43, so that the movements described above are done in the opposite direction. The retaining pawl 57 releases the wheel 58, which can rotate by an angle corresponding to the spacing of a tooth, under the effect of the traction of the carriage, while the escape pawl 50 returns to the indicated position. in fig. 3, which is determined by a stop not shown. The rotation effected by the wheel 58 thus makes it possible to move two spacing units.
When, at the time of typing, the lever 47 has been moved by the pull tab 46 so as to occupy the position shown in phantom in FIG. 3, the operation described above is reproduced identically, except that the exhaust pawl 50 makes a greater displacement until it hits the stop 49 of the lever 47. As a result, when the retaining pawl 57 releases the wheel 58, the latter performs a rotation corresponding to the spacing of two teeth until the pawl 50 is returned to the position shown.
The carriage therefore moves by a value double that obtained in the previous case, which corresponds to four spacing units.
To obtain a displacement of three spacing units, the rocker 39 must be in the position shown in phantom in fig. 4. In this way, his arm 39b can no longer meet the stop 56 of the anchor 51 and the latter therefore remains immobile during the strike. In this position, the arm 39a of the rocker 39 is located opposite the piston 72 so that, when the bridge 43 causes the rocker 39 to oscillate, this piston 72 is moved towards the inside of the shaft 61, against the action of the spring 73.
The displacement of the piston 72 causes, thanks to the shape of the notch 72b, a displacement of the ball 74 inside the radial opening 76 and, consequently, a sliding of the pusher 75 towards the outside of that. -this. The pusher 75 presses against the retaining pawl 67 and causes it to pivot dextrorsum (fig. 3) around 69, against the action of the spring 71, which causes the engagement of the tooth 67a between the teeth of the wheel 65.
At the same time, the front part 67b of the pawl 67, pressing against the rear part 66b of the pawl 66, causes the latter to pivot, against the action of the spring 70, which causes the release of the tooth <I > 66a </I> of the teeth of the wheel 65.
After the strike has been effected, the bar 1, returning to its rest position, releases the bridge 43, which resumes the position shown in the drawing under the action of the spring 45. This causes reverse movements of the pawls 66 and 67 , allows them both to resume the position shown in the drawing. The wheel 65 rotates by one tooth, under the action of the traction effected by the rack of the carriage on the pinion 64. As the wheel 65 has 14 teeth, the rotation which it performs is one and a half times greater. than the smallest exhaust rotation that wheel 58, which has 21 teeth, can perform. We therefore obtain a carriage advance equal to three units of space.
The movement of the lever 47 (fig. 3) is controlled by the intermediary of the pull tab 46, the lever 27, the rod 25, the arm 23 and the bar 18. The lever 47 is moved against the action of its res comes out 112 when the beak 16 of the button lever 2 acts on the bar 18.
The lateral movement of the rocker 39 is commanded by the beak 15 of the button lever 2, this beak acting on the bar 17 to cause, through the intermediary of the arm 22, the rod 24 and the bent lever 26, a upward movement of the zipper 29. The latter turns the lever 30 around 31 against the action of the spring 36 in order to laterally move the lever 39 by sliding it on the axis 40. It can be seen that the magnitude of l The spacing is determined by the action of the jaws 15 and 16 on the bars 17 and 18 respectively. When none of the jaws 15 and 16 are active during the strike, the smallest spacing is obtained, which is equal to two units.
The action of spout 15 provides three units spacing and that of spout 16 provides four units spacing.
The fi-. 6 represents, on a larger scale, the end of the button lever 2 and shows that, when the support 100 occupies the position indicated in solid lines, the lowering of the lever 2 is accompanied by a displacement of the bar 17 which is pushed by the spout 15. This position of the support 100 allows typing with the character lb by obtaining a space ment of three units. When the support 100 is brought, by means not shown, into its low position indicated in phantom in FIG. 6, the bar 17 can no longer be moved by the spout 15, while the bar 18 is in the path of the spout 16.
This position of the support 100 allows typing with the character la and the resulting spacing is four units.
Figs. 7 to 10 show different embodiments of the button lever 2 making it possible to obtain different combinations of spacing.
The button lever 2 shown in fig. 7 does not include any of the nozzles 15 and 16, so that for the two positions of the support 100, the minimum spacing is obtained, which is equal to two units.
The lever 2, shown in fig. 8, comprises two nozzles 15 and 16 of modified shape, so as to obtain for the character la a spacing of three units and for the character 1b a spacing of four units.
The lever 2, shown in fig. 9, only includes a beak 15, so that for the character 1b, a spacing of three units will be obtained and for the character la a spacing of two units.
The lever 2, shown in fig. 10, also includes a single beak 16, so that for character 1 b the resulting spacing will be two units, and for character <I> 1 a </I> four units.
It goes without saying that other variants of the key lever 2 could be provided, making it possible to obtain other combinations of spacing for the characters 1 a and <B> <I> lb. </I> </ B>
To reverse the carriage, the function of the mechanism is as follows. Lowering the reverse button, not shown, causes rod 107 to move to the left (fig. 1) and, consequently, to rotate dextrorsum of lever 90.
The lever 90 acts simultaneously on the rods 89 and 92, on the zipper 97 and, with a certain delay, thanks to the elongated opening 103, on the zipper 102. By means of the rod 89 and the arm 88, it causes the dextrorsum rotation of the axis 86 (fig. 5) and, consequently, the disengagement of the pawl 85 from the wheel 82.
By means of the rod 92, it causes the pawl 93 (fig. 3) to turn around 94, engaging it in the wheel 58, so as to effect the rotation of the latter, by two teeth, in the direction of reverse motion of the carriage and, consequently, a return of the latter by four spacing units, via the wheel 65 and the pinion 64. By means of the pull tab 97, the lever 26, of the zipper 29 and of the lever 30, it causes the movement of the lever 39 in the position shown in dotted lines in FIG. 4.
Finally, by means of the pull tab 102, it causes the dextrorsum rotation of the lever 104, against the action of the spring 113, which, by means of the pull tab 105 and of the bar 106, causes the lever to pivot senestrorsum. 39 (fig. 1). The arm 39a of the latter pushing on the piston 72, causes a series of movements of the members 74, 75, 67 and 66, which, after the release of the reverse button, results in the rotation of the wheel 65 by one tooth and, therefore, the advancement of the carriage by three spacing units, all of this in the manner explained above.
The carriage therefore performs two successive movements in opposite directions. First of all a backward movement of four spacing units, then an advancement of three spacing units, the sum of these two movements therefore being a backward movement of one spacing unit.
Manual movement of the carriage is obtained as follows. By appropriate means, the lever 108 is acted on so as to cause it to pivot dextrorsum (fig. 1), on its pivot 109, against the action of the spring 111. The lever 108, pushing the piston 77, moves the latter towards the inside of the shaft 61, against the action of the spring 78. The displacement of the piston 77 causes, thanks to the ball 80 and the face 79a of the push evening 79, a slide of the latter towards the outside.
The pusher 79 pressing against the part 81 integral with the pawl 66 causes the latter to pivot (FIG. 3), against the action of the spring 70, so as to disengage the tooth 66a from the teeth of the wheel 65. On the other hand, the spout 110 of lever 10-8 causes, by means of spring 53, the release of pawl 50 from the teeth of wheel 58. From this moment, the carriage can be moved at will in both directions. It is important that, at the end of each of these movements, the relative position of the wheels 58 and 65 is always that allowing a correct departure of the carriage. This is achieved by means of the wheel 82.
Indeed, the latter being integral in rotation with the wheel 58 and comprising a number of teeth which is a sub-multiple of the number of teeth of the wheels 58 and 65, the relative position of the latter allowing a fair start is defined by 'engaging the pawl 85 between two teeth of the wheel 82.
Consequently, when, at the beginning of the manual movement of the carriage, the pawl 85 is not located between the teeth of the wheel 82 (the case shown in fig. 5), the rotation of the pinion 64 causes, thanks to the friction existing between the latter and the shaft 61, the rotation of the latter and, consequently, of the wheel 82 until the pawl 85 is engaged between two teeth of the latter. From this moment, the shaft 61 is stopped, only the pinion 64 and the wheel 65 are driven by the carriage, since the wheel 58 is fixedly mounted on the shaft 61.
The mechanism also operates in the manner described above when performing a tabulation.
One could, of course, make many modifications to the mechanism shown and the greatest spacing could, for example, be obtained by simultaneous escaping of the two wheels 58 and 65. In this case, the movable stop 49 could be replaced. by a fixed stop so that the exhaust from the wheel 58 always has the same value.
