Abstract
308,990. Senkel, R., and Dueball, E. April 2, 1928, [Convention date]. Inking - apparatus. - In an inking-apparatus for a stencil or other printing machine, in which the ink is distributed on an ink drum from an ink-box to which the ink is supplied through a valve-box, the ink is supplied to the valve-box from a collapsable tubular container which is gradually rolled up during the operation of the machine. The ink is supplied to the drum a, Figs. 1 and 2, from a perforated ink-box b having three separate chambers connected by pipes c, c<1>, c<11> to a valve casing d containing a rotary valve d<1> provided with four ports so arranged that by adjusting the valve by means of a hand-wheel d<11>, the ink may be supplied to any one, any pair, or all of the chambers, or may be entirely cut off. The valve casing is connected by a pipe f, Fig. 7, to a collapsable ink tube g which is gradually rolled up as the printing proceeds to eject the ink into the valve casing. For this purpose the flattened outer end of the tube g is inserted into a slot in a holder g<1> rotatably mounted in a carrier h<11> which is gradually moved along a guide so that, by the engagement of a pinion h on the holder g<1> with a fixed rack i<11>, the holder is rotated. The movement of the carrier h<11> is effected by means of a screw i<1> engaging a nut on the carrier and rotated by a ratchet wheel k and a pawl k<11> carried by a lever k<1> which is oscillated by a wedge l<1> carried by a member reciprocated by a cam m on the drum a. The stroke of the pawl lever k<1> is adjustable by means of a wedge s<1>, Figs. 2 and 6, movable by a screw r into the path of a tail piece p on the lever k<1>. When the ink tube is completely rolled up, a pin q on the carrier h<11> engages the screw r and moves it bodily against the action of a spring to carry the upper face s<11> of the wedge s<1> under the tail piece p to arrest the movement of the pawllever k<1>. The hand-wheel d<11> of the rotary valve d<1> co-operates with a pivoted arm n in such a manner that when the valve is in the position cutting off the ink supply entirely, a bolt o carried by an arm n<5> on the shaft of the arm n is moved into the path of the pawl-lever k<11> to prevent immersion of this lever and thus arrest further rolling up of the ink tube g. In a modification, the rotary valve d<1> is replaced by separate independently adjustable slide valves, one for each pipe c, c<1>, c<11>.
