Abstract
475,536. Type-bar-making machines. CLEMO, F. A. (Mergenthaler Linotype Co.) May 22, 1936, No. 14581. [Class 100 (iii)] Ejecting type-bars.-In machines of the kind described in Specification 396,045, and in which a buffer-plate is provided for supporting the slugs during ejection, the shoot leading to the galley is provided with relatively movable side-walls, which are automatically adjusted upon the ejection of a slug, in order to adapt them to various forms and sizes of slug, e.g. slugs of T- or L-shape in cross-section. The curved shoot E, Fig. 2, comprises a fixed base portion E<1> having the left-hand wall E<2>, Figs. 10 and 11, integral with it and formed at the upper edge with a flange E<3>. The movable right-hand wall E<5> also has a flange E<6> on its upper edge, and is mounted on a slide H, Fig. 5, which is normally held in its leftmost position by a spring. The buffer-plate K, which has secured to it a padding-strip K<2> to prevent damage to the face of the slug, is carried by a sliding member K<3>, and is urged towards the mould by a spring. The buffer-plate is normally held away from the mould by an eccentric K<8>, which is forced against the slide K<3> by a spring K<10> acting through an arm K<9>. During the descent of the first elevator A, a cam A<1> thereon acts through a lever L to move the slide H to the right. A pin H<6> on the slide thereupon acts through the arm K<9> to turn the eccentric K<8> and release the buffer-plate, which is moved towards the mould by its spring. After the elevator cam has passed out of action, the slide H carrying the movable wall of the shoot is still held to the right by the buffer-plate, which intercepts a plate H<5> on the slide. As the buffer-plate is pushed back by the ejected slug, the slide H is released, and the right-hand wall of the shoot moves towards the slug. In the case of T- or L-shaped slugs, one or. both of the flanges E<3>, E<6> on the shoot walls pass beneath the overhanging part of the slug, as shown in Fig. 11. The movement of the movable shoot wall is limited, according to the shape and size of slug being cast, by a plate b on the mould, which intercepts a pin H<7> on the slide H. The movement of the slide releases the arm K<9>, so that the eccentric K<8> locks the buffer-plate in its forward position. A spring pin M, which is pushed in by the elevator cam A<1>, enters a recess in the slide K<3>, so that, if the parts are not properly set, and the pin is obstructed, the elevator is arrested and the machine is stopped by the vice automatic stop.
