[Class 100 (iii)] Moulds; clamping matrices,-In the casting of slugs bearing short type lines, in which the parts of the slug outside the line of characters are of less height than the remainder, an opening and closing mould is used, which, in addition to closing on the liners forming the ends of the mould slot, also closes on ribs, which project from the vice jaws and serve to reduce the height of the slug. The mould-cap 11, Figs. 1 and 3, is connected to the body portion 16 by screws, which permit a limited vertical movement of the cap. The cap is normally held in raised position by springs 18, and is depressed, so as to close the mould, by the forward movement of the metal-pot acting through a lever 8 and sliding plates 7, 12. The mould-cap closes on to ribs 20, projecting from the vice-jaws 1, and having the same thickness as the mould-liners 21, which are of correspondingly reduced width. In a modification, only the front part of the upper mould surface is movable, and is formed by a plate 23, Fig. 7, mounted to slide vertically on the head of the first elevator. The plate 23 is depressed on to the ribs 20 by the action of the metal-pot, as before, through a sliding member 28 mounted on the mould-cap.
