[Class 100 (iii)] Justifying matrices ; spacers.-Relates to (1) the construction of wedge spacebands, and (2) means whereby the matrix-line can be justified in the assembler. (1) The spaceband is constructed so that the parts remain in adjusted position until force is applied to effect their relative movement. The stationary part 3, Figs. 1 and 2, of the spaceband is formed with a leaf spring 5, which bears against the sliding wedge-member 2, so as to tend to prevent relative movement. At the position of maximum extension, the spring 5 engages in an aperture 6, so as to allow free movement of the member 2 for a limited distance adjacent to this position. (2) A justifying-bar 7, Fig. 5, carried by vertically sliding rods 11, 12, is mounted below the assembler 18, and can be raised by means of a hand-lever to drive up the spacebands and justify the line. The bar 7 is movable horizontally by rack-mechanism operated from a knob to enable it to be moved beneath the spacebands. Vertical movement of the matrices and spacebands during justification is prevented by a slidable spring-pressed member 30, Fig. 4a, which is mounted in the rear wall of the assembler and has a lip 34, adapted to overlie the lugs of the spacebands, and rails 35, 36 to overlie the lower ears of the matrices. The member 30 is moved forwards into active position by a lever 41 and a rod 45 operated from the justification hand-lever.
