Abstract
534,056. Type-bar-making machines. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY, Ltd., SCOTT, R. H., GORSE, W. F., and HAYWARD, A. S. Dec. 21, 1939, No. 32673. [Class 100 (iii)] Magazines. - In multimagazine arrangements, in which the removal of a magazine is facilitated by spreading apart of the magazines above the one to be removed, the selection of the magazines to be spread is effected automatically by the adjustment of the magazine column. The spreading may be effected by the movement into operative position of one of the pivoted arms 5, on which the magazine is supported during removal, the selected magazine being at the same time separated from its base-frame, as described in Specification 525,412, or an independent lever &c. may be employed. Links 9. 10, pivoted to the base-frames of the top and lowermost magazines, are pivoted together, so as to form a toggle by which the top magazine is raised. The toggle is operated by a shaft 11, which is in connection with the magazine supporting-arm 5. The magazines below the top one are raised, in known manner, by lifting-hooks 14, 15 depending from the uppermost base-frame and adapted to engage with studs on the base-frames of the second and third magazines. According to the invention, the edges of the lifting-hooks are formed as cam-surfaces, which are engaged by fixed rollers 20, 20a, so as to move the hooks into and out of engagement with the studs on the magazines as the column is raised and lowered. The raising of a magazine before the matrices have been locked therein may be prevented by the engagement of a stud 44 on the arm 5 in a notch in an arm 46, which is held locked until the escapement locking-pawl is released.
