Abstract
525,412. Type-bar-making machines. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY, Ltd., SCOTT, R. H., GORSE, W. F., and HAYWARD, A. S. Feb. 18, 1939. No. 5473. [Class 100 (iii)] Magazines.-To facilitate the removal of a magazine from a shiftable column, the movement of an extensible magazine-supporting arm to operative position is arranged to spread the magazines apart, and to separate from its baseframe the magazine to be removed. The magazines are spread apart by toggle-mechanism comprising links 12, 13, Fig. 1, the lower links 13 being fixed to a shaft 14 in the lowermost base-frame, and the upper links 12 pivoted to the base-frame of the uppermost magazine. The lower magazines are lifted, as far as is necessary, by manually adjusted hooks 16. The toggleshaft 14 is formed at its end with a transverse tongue, which, as the magazines are raised or lowered, passes into engagement with one or another of grooves 20, Fig. 2, formed in the hubs of lever-arms 21, which are mounted in the machine frame. The arms 21 are connected by a link 22, and are rocked simultaneously by a link 8 connecting them to one of the magazinesupporting arms 5. The magazine in use is lifted from its base-frame by cam-members 28 fixed on shafts 27, one of which is mounted in each base-frame. Each shaft has at its end a transverse tongue, and that corresponding to the magazine in use rests in a groove 25, Fig. 2, in a lever-arm 11, which is mounted in the machine frame. The arm 11 is connected by a link 9 to the magazine-supporting arm 5, the arrangement being such that the magazine in use is not raised until the magazines have been separated. To prevent the magazine from being lifted if the matrices are not locked therein, .a latch may be provided for locking the magazinesupporting arm until the matrix-locking bar has been moved into locking position.
