This invention relates to typographical composing machines, such :as those known under the registered trade-mark Linotype. More particularly the invention relates to machines provided with a column of superposed magazines adjustable columnwise to bring a selected magazine into operative relationship with the assembling and distributing mechanisms, and wherein individual magazines may be removed and replaced, for
which purpose the magazine column structure includes a base frame appropriate to each magazine.
For effecting the removal of a magazine from such a column in one constructional form of apparatus, after the magazine column has been adjusted to bring the magazine in question into the operative position, the magazines are spread apart, if necessary, to facilitate the handling of the magazine to be removed, and extensible arms mounted on side frames between which the column is adjustable, are moved into extended position to support the magazine during removal.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved form of mechanism associated with such extensible arms, whereby the manipulations preparatory to a magazine change are simplified.
To this end the invention contemplates an arrangement wherein the adjustment of an extensible arm to the magazine supporting position serves to actuate means for spreading the magazines where necessary, and means for separating from its base frame the magazine to be removed. The invention also contemplates means whereby the movement of the magazine column 3 to bring a selected magazine to the removal position serves to connect the operating devices of the spreading and separating means with the selected magazine.
Preferably the spreading and separating move- 40 ments are carried out successively by mechanisms actuated from the same source and the arrangement is advantageously such that a magazine cannot be lifted from its base frame until the magazine frames have been separated. The ma- 45 chine may also incorporate a device whereby the raising of a magazine is prevented until the matrices are locked therein.
The invention will be clearly understood from the following description of forms which the in- 5 vention may assume and the description will be more readily followed by reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is aside view of the relevant parts of "a machine constructed according to the present invention showing the magazine supporting arm in its extended position and operable for the withdrawal of the magazine immediately below the uppermost;
Figure 2 is a similar view to that of Figure 1 but with the extensible arm in the closed position 5 and showing only a portion of the mechanism;
Figure 3 is a plan view of part of the mechanism of Figures 1 and 2;
Figure 4 is a side view of a modified construction according to the invention; and
Figure 5 is a plan view of Figure 4.
Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, a column of four superposed magazines, I, 2, 3 and 4 is illustrated, which column may be adjusted in well known manner to bring any selected magazine into operative position. The side frames between which the magazine column is adjustable, are provided with a pair of pivoted magazine supporting arms '5, 6, one at each side, and the supporting arm 5 on one of the side frames is fixed to a rock shaft I mounted in the frame. This shaft 1, hereinafter termed the supporting arm shaft, is adapted to operate two arms 8 and 9 connected to links Ill, H which respectively effect the spread of the magazines and the 25 separation of the selected magazine from its base frame. The arms 8 and 9 are provided with slots 8a and 9a respectively by means of which they are positioned and guided on rollers &b and 9b secured to the machine frame. It will be observed that the arm 5, when in the operative position as shown in Figure 1, banks on the shoulder 5a in the machine frame.
The spreading of the magazines may be effected by means of a pair of links l2, I3 forming a toggle at each side of the magazine column, the toggle being extended and collapsed by rocking a shaft l4 extending across the base frame of the lowest magazine, to which shaft, hereinafter termed the toggle shaft It, one link l3 of each pair is fastened, the other link [2 of each pair being pivot-ally connected to the base frame 15 of the uppermost magazine I. There are also provided pairs of lifting hooks I6, I! suspended from each side of the uppermost base frame, arranged to be engaged as desired with studs l8 extending laterally from the base frames of the magazines 2, 3, 4 below the uppermost. The lifting hooks l6 and H are adjusted manually in relation to the studs l8.
In carrying out the present invention the toggle shaft M is at one end formed with a tongue l9 adapted to engage in a groove 20 formed in one or another of a series of levers 2| which are connected by means of a link 22 and simultaneously operated by the beforementioned link it connected to the supporting arm shaft 7, by means of the arm 8, the arrangement being such that as the magazine column is adjusted the toggle shaft l 4 is operatively connected with the grooved levers 2! in succession. In order to separate the selected magazine from its base frame to facilitate removal of the magazine therefrom, the above-mentioned link ll, operable by the supporting arm shaft 1 through the arm 9, is connected with an arm 23 fast on a shaft 24 formed with a groove 25 adapted to engage with a tongue 2% on a transverse shaft 21 mounted on the base frame is of each magazine. A shaft 21 is provided for each base frame. By these connections, when the supporting arm shaft l is rocked, the transverse shaft 2'! on the base frame iii of the selected magazine is also roc ked to operate a cam member 28 for raising the respective magazine from the base frame. The link H tends to be held against the stop Ha by the pull of the spring 32 (Figure 2) The cam member 28 is provided with a notch 29 which is adapted to engage the pin 30 in the plate 3| which is pivoted to the base frame it of the second magazine as shown in Figure 1. The cam member 28 is as shown in Figure 3 in the form of a flat plate which is adapted to engage in a recess formed in the upper side of the base frame when in the inoperative position.
The arm 8 is provided at the end nearest to the supporting arm shaft I with a hook end 33. A lever 34 is fixed on the shaft 7 at the end of which is a stud 35 which is adapted to engage in the hook end 33 and actuate the lever arm 8. A stud 36 is also provided on the arm 5 which engages in a hook end 31 formed in the end 38 of the lever arm 9. Upon movement of the arm 5 from the position shown in Figure 2 to that of Figure 1 the arm 8 is first actuated and through it the magazine spreading mechanism constituted by the toggle linkage i2, i3 and the lifting hooks I6, I! by means of the levers 2| and the link 22 operating the shaft l4. When the spreading movement is complete the stud 35 leaves the hook end 33 and the spread magazine frames hold the lever l0 against the stop llia by their own weight. The stud 36 is positioned in relation to the hook end 3'1 of the arm 9 so that the arm 9 with its associated separating mechanism is actuated after the arm 8 and its associated magazine spreading mechanism and it will be apparent that the arrangement is such that a magazine cannot be raised from a base frame until the magazine frames have been separated.
It is to be noted that when the supporting arm 5 is in the inactive position, the grooves 2a in the levers 2! of the spreading mechanism and the groove 25 on the arm 23 of the separating mechanism are aligned respectively with the tongue IS on the toggle shaft it, and the tongues 26 on the transverse shafts Zl' of the several base frames [5, so that as the magazine column is moved to the different positions bringing the magazines 2, 3 and 4 into operative position relative to the assembler entrance 39 the respective tongues and grooves are brought into engagement. However, as no spreading of the magazines is needed when the uppermost magazine is in the removal position, it is unnecessary to provide a magazine spreading lever 2! for operating the toggle shaft l4 when the magazine column is in its lowermost position.
A modification of the invention will now be described with reference to Figures 4 and 5 in which the arrangement of the spreading and separating mechanism is in all material respects identical with that described with reference to Figures 1, 2 and 3 Figures 4 and 5, however, illustrate the invention applied to a different form of magazine and in conjunction with means for preventing the lifting of a magazine until all the matrices are locked therein. In Figures 4 and 5 the magazines are again shown at l, 2, 3 and 4 and reference numerals corresponding to those used in Figures 1 to 3 are used to indicate parts of the spreading and separating mechanisms which are substantially identical with those previously described. It is to be noted however that the slots and rollers Ba, 8b, 9a, 912 shown in Figure 1 are not employed and the arms 8 and 9 are guided by means of rollers 49 and 4| which run in radial races 42 and 43 secured about the supporting arm shaft 1.
The device for preventing the raising of a magazine until all the matrices are locked therein consists of a stud 44 on the arm 5 which engages with a recess 45 in the arm 46. The arm 45 is held in such a position that the stud 44 remains in engagement with the recess 45 by means of the lever 4?. When the escapement locking pawl is released the lever 41 is free to move under the influence of the spring 49 so that the arm 46 can be moved manually to free the supporting arm 5.
It is further to be noted in connection with the constructional forms of the invention above described, that although, as is usual, a magazine supporting arm is provided at each side of the machine, the spreading and separating connections described need be associated with only one of the said arms, the other arm being simply adjustable on the other side frame between its active and inactive positions.
Having described our invention, we declare that what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.. A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines, each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame, an extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal or replacement, and mechanism actuated by the adjustment of said arm to the magazine supporting position for spreading the magazines and for separating from'its base frame the magazine to be removed.
2. A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines adjustable to bring a selected magazine into operative position, each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame, an extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal or replacement, and mechanism associated with said magazines and arranged to be connected automatically with the selected one thereof for spreading the magazines and for separating said selected magazine from,
its base frame, said mechanism being actuated by the adjustment of said extensible arm to the magazine supporting position.
3. A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines, each of said magazines be ing mounted on a base frame, an extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal or replacement, and mechanism for successivelyspreading the magazines and separating from its base frame the magazine to be removed, said mechanism being actuated by adjustment of said extensible arm to the magazine supporting position.

A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines, each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame, an extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal or replacement, mechanism actuated by the adjustment of said arm to the magazine supporting position for spreading the magazines and for separating from its base frame the magazine to be removed, and means for ensuring that a magazine cannot be lifted from its base frame until the magazine frames have been spread.

A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines adjustable to bring a selected magazine into operative position, each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame, an extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal or replacement, and mechanism for successively spreading the magazines and separating from its base frame the magazine to be removed, said mechanism being actuated by adjustment of said extensible arm tothe magazine supporting position, said spreading and separating mechanism being arranged to be automatically connected upon the selected magazine being brought to the operative position.

A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines adjustable to bring a selected magazine into operative position, each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame. an extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal or replacement, mechanism actuated by the adjustment of said arm to the magazine supporting position for spreading the magazines and for separating from its base frame the magazine to be removed, and means for ensuring that a magazine cannot be lifted from its base frame until the magazine frames have been spread, said spreading and separating mechanism being arranged to be automatically connected upon the selected magazine being brought to the operative position.
7. A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines adjustable to bring a selected magazine into operative position. each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame, an
extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal or replacement, mechanism actuated by the adjustment of said arm to the magazine supporting position for spreading the magazines and for separating from its base frame the magazine to be-removed, and operating devices included in said mechanisms arranged to be connected automatically as the selected magazine is moved into operative position. 8. A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines, each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame, an extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal or replacement connected to a rock shaft, operating devices for spreading the magazines and for separating from its base frame the magazine to be removed, and an arm and linkage connecting said rock shaft with said operating devices.
9. A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines adjustable to bring a selected magazine into operative position, each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame, an
to connect automatically with one of said operating devices as said magazine is brought into operative position.

A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines, each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame, an extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal and replacement, and mechanism for successively spreading the magazines and for separating from its base frame the magazine to be removed, said mechanism including a spreading arm and a separating arm each having hooked ends, said extensible arm having a stud thereon to engage With the hook of the spreading arm and a stud on said arm to engage in the hook of the separating arm.

A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines adjustable to bring a selected magazine into operative position, each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame, an extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal and replacement, a rock shaft connected to said arm, operating devices for spreading said magazines, operating devices for separating a magazine from its base frame, mechanism associated with the selected magazine and arranged to connect automatically with one of said operating devices as said magazine is brought into operative position, linkage connected to each operating device, a spreading arm and a separating arm respectively connected to said operating devices, said arms being provided with hooked ends, a lever pivoted to said rock shaft having a stud thereon adapted to engage in the hooked end of the spreading arm and disengagetherefrom upon spreading being completed, and a stud on the extensible arm adapted to engage in the hooked end of the separating arm.

A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines, each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame, an extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal or replacement, and mechanism actuated by the adjustment of saidarm to the magazine supporting position forspreading the magazines and for separating from its base frame the magazine to be removed, said mechanism including operating an extensible arm. forsupporting one of said magazines on removal or replacement, mechanism actuated by the adjustment of said arm to the magazine supporting position for spreading the magazines and for separating from its base frame the magazine to be removed and operating devices included in said mechanisms arranged to be connected automatically as the selected magazine is moved into operative position, said operating devices having tongue and groove connection with an operative shaft of the corresponding magazine arranged to be connected automatically upon said magazine being moved into the operative position.

A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines, each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame, an extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal or replacement, and mechanism actuated by the adjustment of said arm to the magazine supporting position for spreading the magazines and for separating from its base frame the magazine to be removed, said spreading mechanism including a lever associated with each magazine except the uppermost, said levers being adapted to engage successively with a toggle shaft, said toggle shaft having secured thereto a toggle linkage and lifting hooks engaging studs on said magazines actuated by said toggle linkage.

A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination. a plurality of magazines adjustable to bring a selected magazine into operative position, each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame, an extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal or replacement, mechanism for spreading the magazines actuated by adjustment of said extensible arm to the magazine supporting position, said spreading mechanism including a lever associated with each magazine except the uppermost, said levers being adapted to engage successively with a toggle shaft, said toggle shaft having secured thereto toggle linkage, lifting hooks engaging studs on said magazines adapted to be actuated by said toggle linkage, said levers being arranged to be connected automatically with said toggle shaft as the selected magazine is moved into operative position, and mechanism for separating from its base frame the magazine to be removed.

A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines, each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame, an extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal or replacement, and mechanism actuated by the adjustment of said arm to the magazine supporting position for spreading the magazines and for separating from its base frame the magazine to be removed, said separating mechanism comprisinga plate pivoted to each magazine base frame, said plate being movable about its pivot by mechanism operated by said extensible arm.

A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines adjustable to bring a selected magazine into operative position, each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame, an extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal or replacement, mechanism actuated by the adjustment of said arm to the magazine supporting position for spreading the magazines and for separating from its base frame the magazine to be removed, said separating mechanism comprising a plate pivoted to a shaft on each magazine base frame, said shaft having a tongue therein engaging a groove in a lever actuated by said extensible arm, said groove being arranged to be connected automatically with the shaft of the selected. magazine as said magazine is moved into the operative position.

A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines, each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame, an extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal or replacement, mechanism actuated by the adjustment of said extensible arm to the magazine supporting position for spreading the magazines and for separating from its base frame the magazine to be removed, and means for preventing movement of said extensible arm until the matrices have been locked in their channels.

A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines adjustable to bring a selected magazine into operative position, each of said magazines being mounted on a base frame, an extensible arm for supporting one of said magazines on removal or replacement, mechanism associated with said magazines and arranged to be connected automatically with the selected one thereof for spreading the magazines and for separating said magazine from its base frame, said mechanism being actuated by the adjustment of said extensible arm to the magazine supporting position, and means for preventing movement of said extensible arm until the matrices have been locked in their channels.
20. The combination according to claim 18 wherein a lever connected with the matrix locking means is formed with a recess adapted to engage a stud on the extensible arm.
21. A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plu rality of magazines adjustable to bring a selected magazine into operative position, each of said magazines being removably mounted on a base frame, means associated with the selected magazine for separating it from its base frame preparatory to removal or replacement, means for spreading the magazines apart to permit the operation of said magazine separating means, and a common operating device for the two said means.

A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines adjustable to bring a selected magazine into operative position, each of said magazines being removably mounted on a base frame, means associated with the selected magazine for separating it from its base frame preparatory to removal or replacement, means for spreading the magazines apart to permit the operation of said magazine separating means, and a common operating device for the two said means, said device when operated acting first to spread the magazines and thereafter to separate the selected magazine from its base frame.

A typographical composing machine of the kind referred to including in combination a plurality of magazines adjustable to bring a selected magazine into operative position, each of said magazines being removably mounted on a base frame, means associated with the selected magazine for separating it from its base frame preparatory to removal or replacement, means for spreading the magazines apart to permit the operation of said magazine separating means, and a common operating device for the two said means, said device being mounted on a relatively fixed part of the machine and arranged to be automatically coupled to the magazine separating and an extensible magazine supporting device mounted on a relatively fixed part of the machine and arranged when unex-tended to be automatically coupled to the magazine separating and spreading means asthe selected magazine is brought into operative position, said device acting when extended first to spread the magazines and thereafter to separate the selected magazine from its base frame.
