Distributing matrices.-In machines having a number of magazines co-operating with two distributors, the matrices are distributed to any two successive magazines by means of a movable fontselecting bridge, which co-operates with notches in the feet of the matrices and is adjustable by the magazine column into either of two operating pcsitions. The movable bridge 8, which in the form described has two rails or ridges 30 to engage the feet of the matrices as they leave the distributor-box, is carried by a. sliding rod 128 operated by a lever 140 and a link 139 from a cam 146 on the magazine column. The cam is so arranged that the bridge occupies one position when the magazines 1, 2 or 3, 4 are in use, and the other position for the magazines 2, 3. The matrices have notches 29, Fig. 3, to co-operate with the ridges 30, those matrices which fit the ridges falling down a shoot 7 and being delivered by the distributor 6 to the upper magazine of the pair in use. Matrices which do not fit the ridges 30 are supported at a higher level and are delivered by the distributor 5 to the lower magazine of the pair. The matrices are in two sets having notches 29 at the same distance apart but differently located to correspond with the two positions of the bridge. The matrices of one set are stored in alternate magazines of the column, and those of the other set in the remaining magazines.
