Abstract
167,633. Linotype & Machinery, Ltd., and Billington, J. E. June 1, 1920. Distributingmatrices.-In machines having a number of magazines and a smaller number of distributors capable of co-operating with different groups of magazines, automatically variable fount-selecting means comprising ridged bridges engaging notches in the feet of the matrices are provided In the form shown in Fig. 1 in which two distributors 5, 6 co-operate with an adjustable column of four magazines 1, 2, 3, 4, a series of four fount-selecting bridges 8 is mounted stepwise on a slide 9 which is automatically moved. as the magazines ara shifted, so as to bring different bridges into the path of the matrices presented to the upper distributor 5. Matrices having notches which register with the bridge in operative position fail to engage the upper distributor and fall down a shoot 7 to the lower distributor 6 by which they are delivered to the upper magazine of the pair in use. The remaining matrices are delivered by the distributor 5 to the lower magazine of the pair. The slide 9 is operated by a lever 14 carrying a roller 16 which co-operates with blocks 18 secured in different positions on the magazines. During the shifting of the magazines, the lever 14 is moved clear of the blocks 18 by a connection with the usual magazines-locating means, which comprises rotatable turrets 19 carrying studs which engage gapped blocks on the magazine frame. The device may be employed in connection with a preliminary fount-separator by which the matrices are delivered to either of two distributors, the matrices which register with the bridge falling down a shoot 62, Fig. 7, to one distributor, and the other matrices engaging the ribbed bar 46 of the separator and being delivered by a shoot 64 to the other distributor. The bridges may, in this arrangement, be mounted on a pivoted sector or on a rotating drum or prism 50. The device may be applied to arrangements having three or more distributors bv the use of two or more bridge-carrying slides, which must be independently operable if it is desired to vary the order of the magazines in the column. By the use of an additional fount-selecting unit, matrices may be definitely selected for each of the magazines in use, rejected matrices being delivered to a pie-receptacle. In arrangements having stationary magazines and movable distributors, the fount-selecting bridges are adjusted by the distributor-moving mechanism. To avoid interference with the distributor screws, a modification may be used in which the fount-selecting bridges are carried on a slide movable parallel with the distributor, the required bridge being moved at right-angles to the slide into operative position by the magazinelocating means. Specification 12850/12 is referred to.
