Distributing m a t r i c e s . -Means movable into and out of operative position is provided for supporting matrices released from the distributor-bar and dropping them at points different from those at which they are released from the bar. The device is particularly applicable to the distribution by means of a single-distributorbar of. founts containing different numbers of matrices, such as normal ninety-character founts and special seventy-two character founts suitable for display work, and comprises a pair of notched rails D, Fig. 3, upon which the matrices released from the distributorbar B are supported and carried forward until they reach the proper magazine channel. The normal founts may be stored in the upper magazines A, A<1>, Fig. 1, of a movable column, and a, special seventy-two character found in the lowest magazine A<2>, interchangeable magazine entrances C, C<1>, which differ in the number and spacing of their channels, being provided. One of the rails is carried by arms D' pivoted to the distributor-bar B, and is normally in operative position, but is pushed out of action by a projection D<6> on the magazine-entrance C. The other rail D is carried by the entrance C<1>. Both of the rails may be pivoted to the distributor-bar and connected together so that they may be held out of action by a spring and moved into action by a projection on one magazine-entrance or magazine. In another form, both of the rails are carried by one of the magazine-entrances. The rails may have only a single pair of notches for releasing sorts matrices at one point, or may be unprovided with notches so that the matrices are released at the ends of the rails.
