Abstract
243,269. Hart, H., (Mergenthaler Linotype Co.). July 1, 1925. Distributing matrices. - Distributing-apparatus for matrices, which have been separated into founts by a primary distributor, is so constructed as to avoid the necessity for notches in the feet of the matrices. The matrices from the primary distributor fall into one A, Fig. 1, of a number of distributor-boxes, in which they are sup. ported by means of their ears on inclined rails A<1>, A<2>. Shoulders A', A<5> arrest the matrices, which are lifted one by one by a reciprocating linger C, and slide down into engagement with the distributor-screws B<1>. The shoulders A<4>, A<5> are in different vertical planes, so as to arrest the matrices in an inclined position, and fingers A<7> tilt each matrix into a vertical position before it engages the screws. A separator blade D<5> engages slots in the matrices to prevent more than one from being lifted. In a modification, the shoulders A<4>, A<5>, Fig. 5, are in a vertical plane, and the lifted matrix is pushed forwards by a pivoted spring-pressed dog D, having a cross-bar D<2> in the path of the matrices. Shoulders E<1>, E<2> limit the movement of the matrices under the action of the dog, the lower part D<3> of which also acts as a separatorblade. Fixed cam surfaces may be used in place of the dog. In another form, the upper shoulders A<4> are formed on a sliding member, which is retracted by a cam to withdraw the shoulders from beneath the matrix ears. The ends of the screws B<1> are cut away to form vertical abutments for the matrices, and the guide-rails may have co-operating abutments to prevent rebound.
