Assembling matrices.-Relates to means for facilitating the composition of tabular matter, and particularly to the construction of the special matrices used for separating the different measures of the line, and to the means for holding them in position during justification. The special matrix 1, Fig. 1, is formed with an aperture 2 for the reception of a dog or plunger, which is moved into engagement with it by the descent of the first elevator. The plunger 8, Fig. 2, is carried by an arm 7 on a shaft 6 which is supported on the vice-frame, a spring tending to turn the shaft so as to bring the plunger down into engagement with the matrix. The arm 7 is normally held in vertical position by a spring detent 31 which engages an arm 5 on the shaft, the detent being tripped, as the first elevator descends, by a projection 82. The descent of the arm 7 is regulated by a cam 4 on the elevator, which is engaged by a roller on the arm 5, and also serves to raise the arm 7 as the elevator rises. The plunger 8 is guided in the end of a yoke-lever 17, which is mounted on the shaft 6 and has a slight movement relative to the arm 7, from which it is normally separated by a spring 30. The arm 7 is adjustable along the shaft 6 to vary the position of the plunger, and for lines containing more than two measures, corresponding number of plungers is employed. In a modification, the cam 4 is replaced by a pivoted cam co-operating with a switch-cam to delay the seating of the yoke-lever 17 until the elevator is in its lowest position, and to effect a quick retraction of the plunger.
