"This invention relates to machines for casting and composing single types in justified lines which after being formed are pushed into a alley to form a column. More particularly the invention relates to machines in which the type and linesproduced are reversed as in Semitic or like languages in which reading matter differs from English in that the lines are read from right to left. A machine adapted for English composition may be used for Semitic composition provided the Semitic matrices are reversed or turned through 180.with respect to the position of the English matrices and provided also that the composed lines are delivered in the galley in a direction opposite to that of delivery for type lines in the English language. In either case, it may be noted, the delivery is in the same direction with respect to the position of thecl'iaracters on the type bodies: for example, it may in each case be toward the foot or bottom of the characters.
The main object of the invention is to provide a typographic machine for reversed composition, such as Semitic, the construction of which shall be free from mechanical complications and the operation of which safe and sure withoutproducing strains beyond what the machine as a whole or the various parts thereof aredesigned properly to withstand. Another object is to provide, in a machine for casting types in selected sequence and conveying them in the form of embodying a platform and a wall to support both the footand one of the sides of each type while the line is raised to position for discharge to alevel other than that of the said line channel. These objects and others which will appear hereinafter will be further explained and'made clear in connection with the following description of an embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view including certain parts of a type casting'and composing machine in which the bodied.

For illustrative purposes it has been chosen to showthe invention as embodied in a single type casting and composing machine which is well known as manufactured invention is shown emandsold by LanstonhMonotype Machine Company and the general, organization of whichis set forth in United States Patent No. 625998, dated May 30, 1899. Such a machine is adapted for composition in English and likelanguages:I'The present invention contemplates alterations and changes therein to adapt it for Semitic composition and such changes are l0catedexcept'for the reversing ofthe matrices previously referred t0wholly in the galley of the mechanisms in such machine for selecting and positioning the matrix, dimensioning the mold. casting the type and ejectothermechanisms associated with such operations are unchanged: and for that'reason deemed junnecessary to illustrate and de scribe the entire machine Certain parts of the machine, particularly those which perform functions immediately before the delivery of the line into the galley, are shown in the drawings, however, and of them it may be of assistance to mention the following to clearly identify the machine: the paper tower A for the paper strip controller having signal perforations to govern the matrix positioning devices B, B, by which a selected matrix is positioned over the mold 0 provided with the cross block 1) and the dimensioning and ejecting blade E; the molten metal pot F provided with the pump mechanism G; the type carrier H; the line channel I, the line hook K and its operating mechanism including the lever L and cam disk M; the main galley'frame or stand N; the fixed channel block 0. As is well known these various mechanisms as well as other mechanisms of the machine, not shown, operate in properly timing relation to select and position a desired matrix, lower it over the mold properly dimensioned, inject molten type metal into the mold against the matrix, and eject the type thus formed from the mold and deliver it into the line channel I; also, when a line of type has been so delivered, the cam M is operated to cause the line hook K and its oper-. ating mechanism L to draw the line to a position in which it may be pushed laterally into the galley. These mechanisms and their operation being well understood by those skilled in the 'art require no further description here.
As has been hereinbefore stated, the machine above referred to is adapted for English language composition and the line of type in front of the galley is pushed toward the right of the machine, but for Semitic composition the galley is required to be locatedat the left of the machine and the line must be pushed therefore to the left as shown in Fig. 1. The galley 1, according to the present invention is located at the left of the line channel I above the galley mechanism operating cam disk M and above the level of the line channel. The type line must therefore be raised from the channel level to the galley level and this is accomplished by the provision of a pivoted type line lifter mechanism comprising the frame 2 pivoted at one end on the shaft 3 supported on the bracket 4: secured by bolts 5 to the cross bar 6, the latter being provided in its upper surface with a dove tailed groove with the walls of which the beveled heads of the bolts 5 cooperate whereby upon loosening the bolt nuts the bracket 1 and the type line lifter may be adjusted in a direction parallel with the line channel I. The crossbar 6 is itself supported on the rods 7 extending from the main supporting bracket 8 secured to the main galley frame or stand N. The cross bar 6 is adjustably secured to the rods 7 by the wing set screws 9 by the manipulation of which, it is obvious, the type line lifter may be adjusted in a direction at right angles to the line channel I. The rods 7 are likewise adjustable with respect to the supporting bracket 8 by manipulation of the wing set screws 10. The said bracket is provided with a raised portion 11, the upper surface of which is substantially on a level with that of the cross bar 6 and is likewise provided with a dove-tailed groove for cooperation with a bevel bolt 12 for adj ustably securing to the portion 11 the wiper plate 13, more particularly described hereinafter. It may be noted that the parts 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 are all standard parts of the present commercial machine-based upon the machine of the above mentioned patent.
The type line lifter frame 2 comprises parallel side bars connected together by the cross piece 14 near the shaft 3, and the channel member 15 at the end of the frame opposite to the end pivoted on shaft 3, said member 15 being provided with a column pusher I recess 16 and with a type line platform 17 (Fig. 3) for receiving a line of types delivered along the type channel I by the line book K. In the normal or lowered position of the lifter frame 2 the platform 17 rests upon the type channel plate 18, which is recessed to accommodate the platform 17 so that normally the upper horizontal surfaces of the platform and the plate are on the same level. The type feet resting on the upper surface of the plate are caused to slide along the channel by the action of the line hook during which motion the feet leave the plate and are transferred to the lifter platform. Thelatter is of the well known kind found on type casting andwcomposing machines of the species hereinbefore mentioned and in connection with which the mechanism of the invention is herein disclosed: thisv 7 the rule 34 have been set in the usual way to correspond with the point size of the type to be cast also that the abnormal line trip device has been set for the length of line to be cast, the latter device by extending the rock shaft 59 and placing the arm 58 and block 57 to a position corresponding with the line length. It may also be assumed that the galley bar 55 has been secured with proper relation to the block 57 and the galley itself. l Vhen a number of individual types have been cast sufficient to form a line and said types have been moved into the line channel between the fixed and movable channel blocksthe cam disk M is caused in a well known manner, as by a proper signal in the paper controller, to rotate a single revolution only, during which revolution the line is assembled and moved into the galley and the various mechanisms for accomplishing this purpose are then caused to return to their normal positions as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5. The first function of the disk M is to operate lever L and cause the line hook K to draw the line of type from between the channel blocks with their feet on the type channel plate 18 to a position between the column pusher 19 and the galley entrance plate 54 with their feet on the platform 17 of the channel member 15 of the type line lifter. The adjustment is such that the last type of the line just fully passes upon said platform and its rearmost vertical face against which the line hook contacts, is in accurate alinement with the inner surfaces of the rearmost rim of the galley and of the rule guide block 35. The front vertical face of the foremost type of the line contacts with the line support 56 and if the line is of the proper length to correspond with the adjustment of the line trip device, said face alines with the inner surfaces of the galley bar and the trip block 57. i r
The line having been so positioned the horizontal cam of the disk M depresses the roller 28 of lever 29 and causes an upward movement of the rule operating rod 32 and the lifter device operating rod 39. Both rods move upwardly at the same time but the rod 39 moves faster than the rod 32 because its lever arm is greater. The upward. travel of rod 32 moves the rule 34 up wardly until the upper position of the same shown in Fig. 3 has been reached. The movement of the rod 39 pushes the horizontal arm of the bell crank lever 40 and because the vertical arm thereofcomes against the side of the wiper plate 13 the lever 40 cannot. turn on its axis 41 but moves said axis and the lever 40 upwardly and, as is obvious, turns the lifter frame on its axis 3 and lifts the channel member 15 and the platform l7'with the line of type on it until the end of the vertical arm of the lever40 reaches the upper surface of the wiper plate 13. During this movement the hub 43 and arms 42 are held against rotation by the dominant spring 52.- In this position the lifter frame has been moved on its axis 3 to'its upper position in which the platform 17 is on a level with the galley floor and the upper surface of the galley entrance 54. Further movement of the rod 39 will cause no further upward movement of the platform 17 and will result merely in the turning of the lever 40 on its axis 41 and the wiping of the end of the vertical arm of the lever on the upper surface of the wiper plate 13. The spring 46 resisting the turning of the lever 40 is elongated during this wiping action. The stop 48 is adjusted so that the extent of the lifting movement is reached when the platform is properly leveled in respect to the galley entrance 54.
lVhile the lifter frame and the line of type on it are being raised therule 34 is also being raised, but more slowly so that it is still in contact with the line of type at the time the lifter frame has reached its uppermost position. Further movement of the lever 29 causes no effect upon the lifter mechanism except the wiping of the lever 40 across'the plate 13 but it causes the rule to rise until the limit of motion is reached at which point the rule will be free from contact with the type line and, as shown in Fig. 3, will be sufficiently above the type so that the line maybe pushed toward the galley.
At this'point the cam disk M moves the rod 24 and operates the lever 21 to force the typepusher stem 20 against the action of its spring 51, and thus move the type pusher 19 to discharge the type line from the platform 17 to the galley entrance 54.
During the raising of the line the fore niost type is always in contact with the line support 56 and the rearmost type is first in contact with the line hook K and later with the guide block extension 35 overhanging the line channel and having, as has been hereinbefore stated, its inner side inalinement with the rearmost face of the last type of the line. The rear of the line is always held, therefore, during the lifting of the line, by the line hook or the guide block or both. The forward face of the first type is always supported by the usualline support 56 which, being slidable in the column pusher 19, is lifted with the type. Attenti on is directed to the fact that the line of type is guided not only on its ends as pointed out and on its bottom by the platform 17,
but also on its sides, one side being always incontact with the columnpusher 19 and the other side being guided first by the galley entrance plate 54 and then by the rule 34 or both the plate and the rule.
When upward movement of the line has commenced, this movement being arcuate because the lifter frame 2 is pivoted onthe axis 8, the effect is to tend tocause the types to lean against the type pusher 19 so that at the end of the motion, that is, when the line is ready to be discharged toward the galley, each individual type is tilted against the column pusher and is therefore supported both by its foot on the platform 17 and by one of its sides on the pusher 19. This tilted position of the platform and wall, due to their arcuate travel from their normal substantially horizontal and verticalpositions respectively, may cause the line to tilt before the discharge position has been reached particularly if the rise is considerable and the point size of the type is small.- Practically, the jarring and vibration of the machine will cause the tilting of the type line in any case; and in this connection it may well bestated that machine vibration, ordinarily a bad influence, is helpful rather than otherwise to provide a side and bottom support for the type line. fore cannot become disrupted, as by'vibration, at the time, particularly, that it is ready for discharge, at which time the rule 34 is of course in its uppermost position and the line is not guided on the galley side. Thus supported the line'will remain on the lifter without danger of any of the types falling forward and subsequently being lodged on their sides in the space between the line and the previousline standing on the galley entrance plate. The tilting of the lifter therefore forms an important feature ofthe construction to'insure a perfect elevation and discharge of the type line. The overhanging guide block 35' furthers this end also, as is obvious, by preventing the rearmost type of the line from toppling backward off the platform 17 into the line channel. 7
To provide against breakage or straining of parts due to the possible failure of the lifter mechanism to rise this may bedue, it may be assumed. to a type lodging accidentally between the platform 17 and the under side of the entrance plate 54thebell crank 40- is pivoted to the yielding hub member 43 instead of to the lifter frame 2 itself. The operation in a case of this kind is illustrated in Fig. 4. When the lifter device operating rod39 pushes against the bell crank 40 and the frame cannotrise, the pivot 41 and the arm 42 of thehub member 43 will rise against the tension of spring 52, and the hub member itself will be rocked on The line thereits axis 44 until-the lower arm of the bell crank 40 wipes across the plate 13. During this wiping action the hub member will not rock but the bell crank will rotate about its axis 41 against the action of its spring 46. The spring 46 is weaker than'the spring 52 and in any event is not strong enough to lift the frame 2. The accidental holding down of the lifter frame results in nothing more than the idle rocking of the hub member 43 and of the bell crank lever 40.
An adjusted limit of movement ofjthe column pusher 19 is provided by'the' bolt 26 and its adjustable stop 27, the latter coming against the back of the channel member'15' as a stop in the 'dis'charge'motion. Further movement caused by the cam M merely compresses the spring box 25in the rod 24.
The construction lends itself readily to provide accessibility to the line channel as for cleaning purposes. The lifter device is moved upward by the operatingrod 39 acting against the bell crank lever 40; this rod and this lever are not connected together however and the device may at anytime be lifted manually to the position, for example, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. When thus elevated the channel and the parts adjacent thereto obviousl be cleaned and inspected without any di culty whatever. The provision of separate operating rods for the rule 34and the lifter mechanism with greater leverage for the latter makes it possible, while the lift of the' rule is always a constant, being slightly more than the overall height of the types, to obtain a line lift to any desired level, although, as will be obvious, the extent of the lift should be, as shown, as small as possiblen Furthermore, the independence of these mechanisms assures a proper proportioning and a proper strength for each, such as would not be possible if both the rule and the type line platform were both operated by a single connection with the lever 29.
' I claim' .1. A' type casting and composing machine provided with means for casting types in selected sequence and conveying them in the form of a line into a line channel, and in combination therewith, lifting mechanism including a platform and a'wall, means for moving the type line upon said platform, means. for operating the lifter mechanism and tilting the platform and wall thereof, whereby at raised position both the foot and one of the sides of each type are supported upon the platform and the wall respectively, and the -means for discharging the type line from said lifter mechanism. p 1 b 2. A type casting and composing machine for Semitic languages provided. with means for casting types in selected sequence and ten conveying them in the form of a line into a line channel, and in combination therewith, a galley located on a level higher than that of the line channel, a line lifter having a movable wall and a platform to support the feet of the types, means for moving the lifter in an arcuate path to tilt the types against said wall and to raise them to the level of the galley, supported both on their feet by the platform and on one of their sides by the said wall, and means for sub sequently moving said wall to push the type from the line lifter toward the galley.
3. In a type casting and composing machine provided with means for casting types in selected sequence and conveying them in the form of a line into a line channel, and in combination therewith, means for adapting said machine to produce Semitic composition, said last named means comprising a galley supported at a level higher than that of said line channel, a lifter mechanism provided with a platform for receiving a line of types and a line pusher, means for operating said mechanism and causing the platform and pusher to tilt whereby at raised position the type line is tilted and both the platform and pusher serve to support .the type line, and means for operating the pusher to discharge the line into the galley.

A type casting and composing machine provided with means for casting types in selected sequence and conveying them in the form of a line into a line channel, and in combination therewith, lifter mechanism in cluding a platform for receiving a type line, a line rule, operating means for said mechanism comprising a cam, an intermediately pivoted lever one end of which is acted upon by the cam, and a rod connecting the other end of the lever with the lifter mechanism, a rule operating rod connecting the rule with said lever at a point between its pivot and the connection therewith of the lifter mechanism operating rod, whereby the rule and the lifter mechanism are operated by the said levcfi through independent connections therewit 5. A type casting and composing machine provided with means forcasting types in selected sequence and conveying them in the form of a line into a line channel, and in combination therewith, line lifter mechanism including a platform, a line hook for moving a line of type upon said platform and guiding the rear end of the line, a line support for guiding the front end of the line, means for operating the lifter mechanism, a fixed galley guide having a portion extending over the line channel with the inner wall of said guide and its extension in alinement with the rear .end of the line whereby the guiding of the rear end of the line is the rear end of the line during said discharging action.
6. A type casting and composing machine provided with means for casting types in selected sequence and conveying them in the form of a line into a line channel, and in combination therewith, lifter mechanism comprising a pivoted frame provided with a type line receiving platform, operating means for said mechanism comprising an operating rod the upper endof which is adapted to contact with said lifter mechanism to lift the frame on its pivot but is not secured'to said mechanism, whereby the said frame is free to be lifted manually at any time for cleaning or other purposes, and means for discharging a type line'from said platform.
7 A type casting and composing machine provided with means for casting types in selected sequence and conveying them in the form of a line into a line channel, and in combination therewith, lifter mechanism comprising a pivoted frame provided with a type line receiving platform, operating means for said mechanism comprising a cam actuated lever, a bell crank lever intermediately pivoted to said frame, a rod pivoted to said cam actuated lever'and having its upper end in engagement with one arm of said bell crank lever, a fixed wiper plate with the side of which the other lower arm of said bell crank lever contacts to prevent rotation of the lever and cause a lifting of the frame until the said lower arm reaches the top of the plate after which the bell crank lever may rotate with its lower arm wiping across the top of the said plate, the frame meanwhile remaining stationary in raised position, and a spring tending to oppose the movement of the bell crank lever and to return itto normal position.
8.
