[Class 100 (iii)] Distributing matrices.-Separate adjustable fount - distinguishers, adapted to co-operate with notches in the lower edges of the matrices, are provided, of which one permits the passage to the distributer only of matrices bearing characters of the same point-size, and the other permits the passage only of matrices bearing the same face or style of character. Each matrix has on one side of its centreline a point-distinguishing notch M<1>, Fig. 9, the position of which varies according to the size of character, and on the other side two or more face-distinguishing notches M<2>, M<3>, varying in position according to face. Three fount-distinguishing blades 22, 23, 24, Figs. 2 and 3, to co-operate with the notches, are adjusted laterally by automatic means in accordance with the fount contained in the magazine in use. The blades are carried by separate slides 25, 26, 27, supported by links and levers 33, 34, and are adjusted by gauge-plates each bearing three gauge-surfaces, one plate being attached to each magazine. A yielding connection is interposed between the gauge-plates and the blades to prevent damage. When no magazine is in position, the slides are so moved by spring action that the face-distinguishing blades 23, 24 are cammed downwards by a rod 49 out of the path of the matrices, and the point-distinguishing blade 22 is moved into such a position that it will arrest all matrices.
