[Class 100 (iii)] Assembling matrices.-A hand composing- stick has provision for the composition of matrices in accordance with either of two different systems of alignment, for example, central and base alignment. The stick is of the kind described in Specification 454,263 and comprises side-walls A<1>, A<2>, Fig. 1, and end-walls A<3>, A<4>, the matrices being held by a clamping-member A<5> operated by a screw A<6>. The side-walls are more widely spaced than usual, so as to permit the matrices to be shifted endwise relatively to each other. The matrices, which may be of the Ludlow type, have in their rear faces recesses R, Fig. 5, which vary in width according to fount, and are engaged by an aligning-bar A<8>, which may be carried by pivoted arms A <9>. If the matrices are composed with their lower edges banking against the lower side-wall A<2> of the stick, as shown in Fig. 6, they will be located for central alignment, and are then clamped by means of the screw A<6>. For base alignment, the matrices are shifted endwise until the lower walls of the recesses R bank against the lower edge of the aligning-bar, as shown in Fig. 1, and are then clamped as before. In a modification, the aligning-bar is fixed to the upper wall of the stick, and co-operates with notches cut in the top edges of the matrices.
