Abstract
699,975. Type-bar-making machines. MERGENTHALER LINOTYPE CO. April 16, 1951 [April 15, 1950], No. 8804/51. Class 100(iii) Magazines. A typographical composing machine, such as is known under the Registered Trade Mark " Linotype ", having a base frame removably supporting a matrix magazine, and a magazine lifting and supporting plate pivoted to the base frame and adapted to be swung upwardly to locate the magazine in position for removal or replacement, is provided with a releasable locking device for maintaining the magazine in place on the lifting plate. The machine, including the base plate, lifting plate and lifting mechanism, is substantially of the construction disclosed in Specification 508,612. Slidably secured to a guide piece E5 secured to the front of the lifting plate E, Fig. 3, is a locking plate L, having a notch aligned with notch E7 in the plate E to receive the long centre bar a of the magazine. The plate L is urged to the left by a spring L5 into a position wherein a lug L4 overlies the bar a and prevents the raising of the magazine off the plate E. When the plate E is raised by the cam F, the lug F2 of which engages the pin F3 on the plate, a second lug F4 of the cam engages a cam surface L7 on the plate L and slides the plate into release position as the plate E reaches its uppermost position. On lowering the plate E after magazine replacement, the plate L is immediately released and moves into locking position. In another form, Fig. 7, the locking plate M engages a recess a2 in the bar a, and has a depending lug M2 with an inclined slot M3 engaged by a pin M4 on an actuating slide M5 normally urged to the right by a spring M8 to hold the plate M in locking position. The pin F3 is secured to the slide M5 instead of to the plate E, and when the lug F2 engages the pin, the slide M5 is retracted and moves the plate M into release position. If a replaced magazine is not correctly positioned on the plate E, the plate M cannot return to locking position, and a plate N secured to the lug F2 abuts the lug M2 so that the cam F cannot be moved to lower the plate E. In both forms, the mechanism described is provided on each of the magazine lifting plates in a multi-magazine assembly, but the cam shaft Fl, Fig. 3, is only operatively connected to the actuating magazine supporting arm when its magazine is in operative position with respect to the assembling mechanism. The locking device is also applicable to a single magazine machine. Specification 260,459, [Class 100(iii)], also is referred to.
