The present invention relates to an attachable safety locking device for use in slug and typecasting machines to prevent mold liners from destruction prematurely by force of ejector blades, when same is left out of corresponding adjust ment through error or neglect while attempting to operate said slug and type-casting'machines This device fastens to the left hand assembler elevator gib, ejector dial lever, right hand vise jaw plate screw, vise locking screws and the mold turning pinion, comprising locking and unlocking means which move an obstruction into and out of the path of the assembler elevator automatically. In'eliminating mold liner damages, this def vice subsequently puts an end to many other resultant mechanical disturbances experienced by operators when mold liners are brokenby force'of moveable members of said slug and typecasting machines.

Secured rigidly to the assembler elevator gib X, Fig. l, is an interchangeable bracket i5. The intermediate bracket 50, Fig. 6, has moveablyfmounted on its upper front and back ends, a governor mechanism which comprises a front cover plate 49, Fig. 6,; a cover plate assembler elevator buffer, and an adjustable back pawl 40, which is secured. in position by screws I-I, Fig.
6, and an interposing coil spring operatively connected with the front end of said intermediate bracket and back end of said frame, which is adapted .to rigidlycontain said intermediate bracket pin. The said pin'being adapted to pass through said intermediate bracket pin spring 44, Fig. 6, comprising means which impart alternating. motion'between assembler elevator as indicatedat A, Fig. 6, and 'dial leverattachable. bar. as indicatedat D, whenever. pawl C of cam 35 is moved to obstructing position by backward mo tion of lug 45, indicated at F, Fig. 6, after said governing mechanism is brought into engagement with upward movement of saidassembler elevator at A, Fig.6; after intermediate latch le- PATENT" OFFICE ver 3 is withdrawnfrom obstructingposition at SS, by upward motion of 'dial lever key 6; said upward motion having-caused pawl C to recede to its non-obstructing'position by action of an elastic spring indicated at 39, Fig. 6, which now permits the dial lever to be moved without in-' terference to Whatever position desired.
The said cover plate assembler elevator buffer M, Fig. 6, having now been latched by spring which draws clearance in throat of frame 42, overtop of front end of intermediate bracket 50, at E, Fig. 6,'remains inobstructing position and will unlatch automatically when engaged by upward movement of said assembler elevator R as indicated at A, Fig. 6; which operation throws said pawl C of cam 35 back into obstructingposition, or operative position with said dial lever attachable bar 34, at D.
When the vise mechanism W, Figs. 1 and..2, is opened for making changes of mold liners, its outward motion brings curved end of 'trig'ger"4' into-engagement with shoulder 13 of buffer plate 2 causing opposite endof said intermediate latch lever 3 to riseto obstructing position S, Fig. l. Y- The-intermediate latch lever 3 is held in elevated position by means of a compression spring I, Fig. 5, and may be'lowered' to inactive position by unlocking means'adapted to the linotype class of slug and type-casting machines as provided at 6,'Fig. 1; or unlocking means adapted to the inter-type class of slug and type-casting ma-' chines, as provided in an auxiliary unlocking arrangement as indicated at 8 and I9, Fig. 4; also 8andD,-Fig.l.
Interchangeable bracket I5 of the type indicated at Y, Fig. 5, and I5, Fig. 4, is provided to adjustably receive an angle bar 8 by holding means Hand 22 at F, Fig. 4; same also being adapted to support adjustable lug I9.
Stop screws 25 and 28, Fig. l, are'situated in the upper portion of said interchangeable bracket I5, being provided to receive an intermediate bracket 50, and to arrest the activity of the intermediate latch lever 3 when moved to active or contains projecting helical ribs or threads on its aperture in walls of said tubular! portion, extends from stop screw29 to N, provided to accommodate pin I1, in collar I3 of. receiver cap l2, Figs.

Collar 3I,.Fig. 3, is provided to be used as an extension between collar l3 and mold turning pinion 32, whenever desired. Collar I3, Fig. 3,

, Thetwo supporting collars 2I, Figs. 1 and 2, are constructed so as to be attachable to vise locking screws U and to be operatively connected with vise mechanism W, at H, being adapted to support throat'pieces II. Said throat pieces are constructed so as to operatively receive a reciprocal register rod 28,, Figs; 1 and 2,. asindicated at H lugs 5, being also adapted toaccommodate other types of reciprocal register rods not here shown but indicated at P, Figs. land 2.
Register plate O, Fig. -2, is, constructed so as to be attached to the under side of left hand throat piece II, Fig. 2, having a tail piece 1 provided to accommodatea register plate spring 23,
being adapted to control and register the activity I of buffer T, of said reciprocal register rod with said receiver cap I2, Fig. 2.
The reciprocal register rod 28, Figs. 1 and 2,
is comprised of a moveable member having angles which permit it to pass operatively from said receiver cap I2, through registerplate O, and
in normal position. Thefunctionfheredescribed however, is caused byany interference that may draw said mold turningpinion-outwards suilicient to dislocate the then corresponding mold," or in terchange positions of said mold liners; and to move out of engagement with jsaidshoulder A when said mold turning pinion 32 is brought back into normal position.
The unlocking arrangement adapted'foruse means which'adjustably fastens same to the front side of said dial lever provided as a lug or obstruction, in the. path of which stands the lower side of said intermediate latch lever; being adapted to release the assembler elevator R, Figs. 1 and 6, at S, when upon its upward movement said key is brought into engagement with the said intermediate latch lever 3 at V, Fig. 1, as the said dial lever reaches its full distanceupward's.
The auxiliary unlocking arrangements adapted for use on slug. and type-casting. machines equipped with ejector shifter, as indicated at L and M, and 30, Fig. 4, is comprised of an angle bar 8, Figs. 1 and 4, having mounted on its upper end'an auxiliary key, as indicated at'D,.Fig. l,
and perforations at its lower left angle indicated at F, Fig. 4, same being'provided with holding means 20 and 22, which also adjustably holds same to the lower end of said interchangeable bracket I5, Figs. 1, 4, 5 and 6; to theopposite end of which is also attached a lug I9 as indicated at K, which operatively connects it with the under side of an ejector locating lever indicated at M; which must be lowered with the hand whenever a non-corresponding change of the ejector may be possible, or a different ejector is desired; but which'thenfican only be done-by.

Mold liners are located or dislocatedin the linotype class of slug and type-casting machines by one, of three distinct operations primarily, they are the following:
First-By unlocking the vise W, Figs. 1 and 2, in which case, curved end of trigger 4 locks said machine and same will only unlock itself automatically when the ejector mechanism previously described is brought within a size which cannot damage said mold liners.
Second-By revolving the mold liners and mold mechanism which is accomplished by first moving one of its members called mold turning pinion 32, Fig. 2, outward which releases it from a stud pin not shown, and then to any molding position wanted, but in this case, a receiver cap I2, Fig.2, which obstructs lower end of said reciprocal register rod at T, causes its upper end to strike the said intermediate latch lever mechanism at A, Fig. 1, which also looks said machine as first above operation.
ThirdBy lowering the dial lever I, Figs. 1 and 6, a size of ejector too large to correspond with said mold liner may be brought into position which when attempting to pass, said mold liner would strike and dislocate as well as damage same, but instead, its attachable bar 34, Fig. 6, would engage pawl C of cam 35 and by means of a cam connecting rod 38, said intermediate latch lever 3 looks said machine as in. first and second cases above mentioned; each being subject to the same subsequent unlocking operations.
I The ejector dial, ejector dial locating lever and the ejector shifter all being in one mecha nism or unit form in the intertype class of slug and type-casting machines, the said intermediate bracket 50, its mechanism and the attachable bar mechanism 34, Figs. 1 and 6, are eliminated and in all other respects the principles of manipulations are similar and therefore the safety device operates the same thereon.
The device is self functioning throughout and therefore additional instructions seem unnecessary.
Having thus described the invention I claim:
1. In an automatic liner safety device, adapted to be attached to the assembler elevator gib, vise jaw plate screw, vise locking screws, mold turning pinion and dial lever; an interchangeable bracket located on the left hand lower side of the assembler elevator gib, adapted to support locking and unlocking means; an intermediate bracket located on said interchangeable brackets upper left hand front side, adapted to support a governing mechanism; a cam located on the inner side of said interchangeable bracket, having a pawl which adapts it to be moved into and out of engagement with a dial lever attachable bar; a cam connecting rod, adapted to reciprocally connect an intermediate latch lever with a cam; a cam spring located on the lower side of said interchangeable bracket and holding means, adapted to move to inoperative position by upward movement of said dial lever; a lug located on right hand end of said frame and holding means, operatively connected with a lug on upper left hand portion of said cam, adapted to move a right hand cam pawl into engagement with said dial lever attachable bar and to perform other necessary functions; a cover plate assembler elevator buffer located at the left hand end on the upper side of said frame and holding means, adapted to move into and out of the path of the assembler elevator which automatically move said cam pawl to its operative position; an adjustable back pawl operatively connected with said frame, adapted to be engaged by upward movement of said cam and to move an obstruction into the path of the assembler elevator; a frame and governing mechanism moveably mounted on said intermediate bracket, adapted to reciprocally govern alternating motions; a front cover plate and holding means; a dial lever attachable bar operatively connected with said dial lever; an intermediate latch lever, operatively connected with the assembler elevator gib, adapted to move into and out of the path of the assembler ele-,

eratively connected with the intermediate latch lever, adapted to be engaged by a trigger; a trigger, operatively connected with the right hand vise jaw plate screw, being adapted to moveably engage said buffer plate.
2. In an automatic liner safety device, adapted to be attached to the assembler. elevator gib, vise jaw plate screw, vise locking screws, mold turning pinion and dial lever; supporting collars, attachable to the vise locking screws, adapted to support throat pieces; throat pieces, attachable to supporting collars, adapted to sup-'- means for registering same; a reciprocal register rod, operatively connected with a mold turn ing pinion, register plate, supporting collars and an intermediate latch lever mechanism, adapted to move an intermediate latch lever to obstructing position when mold turning pinion is interfered with or drawn outward sufficiently to be revolved out of corresponding position with mold liner ejector, and to move out of engagement with intermediate latch lever when mold turn ing pinion is revolved or seated in operative position and registering means for same.
3. In an automatic liner safety device, adapted to be attached to the assembler elevator gib, vise jaw plate screw, vise locking screws, mold turning pinion and dial lever; an extension pivot pin, operatively connected with a reciprocal register rod and mold turning pinion, adapted to move the reciprocal register rod alternately with each outward movement of mold turning pinion by means of its adjustable receiver cap; an adjustable receiver cap mounted on said extension pivot pin, adapted to adjust same to various models and to reciprocate alternating motions of the mold turning pinion and the reciprocal register rod.
