Abstract
456,354. Type-bar-making machines. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY, Ltd., 9, Kingsway, London.-(Assignees of Mergenthaler Setzmaschinen-Fabrik Ges.; 25, Chausseestrasse, Berlin) May 8, 1935, Nos. 13531 and 13532. Convention dates, May 18, 1934. [Class 100 (iii)] In a type-bar-making machine having a rotatable mould disc and a relatively stationary vice frame in which matrices are supported in casting relation to a mould carried by the disc, there is provided a carrier permanently mounted on the vice frame and adapted to sustain a matrix holder or hand stick for presenting to the mould a line of matrices composed by hand in the holder or handstick. The carrier is supported by the vice frame 3 and comprises a fixed member 5 attached to the vice frame by bolts 7 and a movable member 6 in which the composing stick 21 may be removably supported ; alternatively, the stick 21 may form a part of the carrier and the matrices may be inserted directly therein by hand. To bring the matrices 22 into register with the slot in the mould 1, the movable member 6 which engages by a tongue-and-groove connection with the member 5 is adjusted by rotating an arm 13 which turns a pinion 10 in engagement with a rack 9 on the member 6 and the arm is locked in adjusted position by a spring plunger 18 which engages in one of a number of recesses on a plate 20 fixed to the vice frame. The matrices are locked in the composing stick 21 by the screw-operated jaw and the stick is held in position by projections 25 thereon which engage with blocks 26 on the member 6, a lug 28, Fig. 6, on the stick and an abutment 27 securing it against lateral movement, while vertical movement is prevented by means of a mutilated collar 30 which is adjusted by a screw 29. The collar carries a pin 31 which limits the movement of the collar and in one position it permits the stick to be inserted after which it is rotated to the position shown in Fig. 4 wherein it holds the stick against vertical movement. In addition, the collar has a spiral groove which is engaged by a pin 34 on the stick, so that upon rotating the collar the stick is held firmly against the member 6. In the machine described, the vice jaws are omitted and the pump-stop mechanism is operated upon the insertion of the hand stick or of the matrices into the carrier by providing in the member 6 a spring-pressed plunger 35 which in its projected position permits a spring- pressed rod 37 to engage a recess in the plunger 35, this determining the limit of the movement of the rod 37 to the right. Upon inserting the hand stick or matrices, the plunger 35 is depressed and moves the rod 37 to the left ; this rod engages with the pump stop lever, which is moved thereby to its inactive position. In a modification, the member 6 may be omitted and the hand stick may be itself provided with set-screws or other adjustable stops to support the stick at the desired level on the carrier.
