Abstract
463,423. Type - bar - making machines. CLEMO, F. A. (Mergenthaler Linotype Co.) Sept. 27, 1935, No. 26692. [Class 100 (iii)] Assembling and clamping matrices. -In means for casting type-bars from matrices supported in a hand composing-stick, which is placed in casting position in the machine, the lines being either of full length or quadded at one or both ends, a composing-stick having one or both of its end-walls movable is employed, to permit the vice-jaws to clamp the matrices. The stick is mounted in a carrier, which is adjustable vertically, to enable characters of different sizes and having base alignment to be aligned with the mould-slot. The matrices used are of plain rectangular form, and have their characters formed in routing-notches of slightly greater than normal depth, and some at least of the moulds are of correspondingly less than normal height. The hand-stick is in the form of an inverted L-shaped member Y, Figs. 3 and 5, comprising a rear wall, and an overhanging top wall. The stick is provided with sliding end-walls y<21>, y<22> to confine the matrices. Notches in the bases of the matrices receive a lip y<16> on the stick, which serves as a lower retaining-member. A vertically-sliding retaining-plate y<10> engages notches in the front upper edges of the matrices. The stick rests in a support H having upstanding posts H<1>, to guide it into position. The support H can bo adjusted vertically on the vice-cap by means of arms on a shaft J<1>, which can be turned by means of a screw K<3> rotatable from a knob K<6>. A graduated disc K<7>, provided with a detent, facilitates adjustment of the holder and its support. A swinging locking- screw H<3> serves to hold the stick down. The vice-jaws E, F, Fig. 8, have on their mouldengaging faces plates E<20>, F<20>, which are arranged to slide vertically, and are raised by springs into contact with the lower edge of the retaining-plate y<10>. The plates E<20>, F<20> serve to close the ends of the mould-slot during the quadding of a line. The jaws are moved towards each other by a right-and-lefthanded screw M, which can be engaged by half-nuts e, f, on the jaws, for centring the line or quadding it at either end. The screw is rotated by rack-mechanism and a friction clutch from a cam on the cam-shaft of the machine, and either or both of the half-nuts can be moved into engagement with it by a rotatable cam-shaft P, Fig. 11, which extends along the jaws and has three elongated camsurfaces p, p<1>, p<2>. The shaft P can be rotated by gearing from a control rod S provided with a knob. The rod S is also movable endwise, and has at its end a toothed collar by which the left-hand jaw can be moved inwards to any desired extent, so that a line may be centred with respect to a transverse line offset from the median line of the slug body. In one angular position of the rod S, the toothed collar engages with fixed teeth on the vice-cap, so that the collar forms an abutment for limiting the outward movement of the jaw. Specification 396,045 is referred to.
